Confusing! My mother's father was Arthur C. Buff; 1904-2003, m. Freda
Smith (in MO). His father was
Silas Ransom Buff; 1876-1959, m. Alice
Flood (w/8 Children in MO). His father was Harvey Alexander Buff; 1848-1925, m. Catherine
Smothermon (w/11 Children in MO).
And HIS father was John Martin Buff; b. in NC 1820; d. in MO 1905; m. Nancy Lee in
Haywood Co., NC 1839. (w/11 Children, mostly in MO). All of this is VERY certain--we have pictures of John Martin
Buff, family bibles (he was a Methodist preacher) and tombstones with dates, etc.
Now, in looking back to NC, he seems to have gone by Martin before he married and grew up in or around
Haywood Co. Based on census dates, I was beginning to think that a John
Buff b.1795 and m. to Catherine "?" was John Martin's father (since he was b.1820). But your notes say that there are two John Buffs--one born 1795 & one in 1777. Are they related? Were they both in
Haywood Co?
Also, I found a Martin
Amos Buff b.1751; married to Rosannah
Klein in
Lincoln Co, Dec. 1789. (Children were John, Katherine, Mary "
Polly" & Barbarry). The Bondsman at this wedding was George Buff--The same George that shares Land
Deeds in
Lincoln and
Buncombe Co. with Martin? I think this Martin
Amos is John Martin's Grandfather--and either "1777 John" or "1795 John" is J. Martin's father, Martin Amos's son. Are you sure that "1777 John" m. Catherine
Lyons and that they had John Martin?
Finally, I saw a reference citing a Michael
Buff as the father of Martin, George & John--somewhere in
Lincoln Co.!
Does anyone have anything more that might help to clear up all these
Martins,
Johns and
Georges? It's gotten out of hand!
