Re: John and Margaret Buff / Buff Cemetery

Shame on me! I recently found that somebody used the parent information for John Buff, Jr. as written gospel and published it! I can only speculate that my John Buff, Jr. is the son of John Buff, Sr. and Elizabeth Haus. This speculation has also come from others researching the Buff surname, but to my knowledge, there has not been any documentation found to confirm this.

If you have ever researched the Buff line, I am sure you have found the name John passed down through generations and numerous Johns from the same time frame in different families or the same area. Lovingly known as the "name game".

For the most part, I can prove what I have found, but this is one I can not.

LESSON LEARNED.
Vicki

If you have anymore names beyond Martin Amos I would appreciate the help. Have you found any native american blood in the family? Cuz we were told that the Buffs carried it, but I haven't found any such proof? I think it is awesome you have all that info on the family though. It helped me tremendously.

At the BUFF Cemetery there is a marker at the entrance of the cemetery that reads:
In Memory of John Buff (Nov. 2, 1801) & Margaret Buff (Sept. 4, 1799). Does anybody know who these people are? Is this a husband and wife? Brother and sister? I descend from John Buff (son of John Buff, Sr). John Buff, (Jr.) married Alice (Allie) Watts. From what I have found John Buff, Sr. married Elizabeth Haus. John Buff, Sr. was the son of Michael. So, who is this John and Margaret Buff that is supossedly buried at the Buff Cemetery. I have been albe to verify who most of the Buff are that are buried at this cemetery. Alice Watts Buff is buried in an unmarked grave or one marked by fieldstones. I took pictures of this cemetery in Sept. 1999.

Re: William H. BUFF - V. Emeline "Emma" SWINK - Burke, Cleveland Counties of N.C.

Following is information I have found on the "Buff" family in which my Emeline Swink married into:

1. Marriage License dated 11 Feb 1891 of W. H. Buff, age 22, s/o Joseph Buff and Fannie Buff, the father now dead, the mother living, resident of Burke and V. E. Swink, age 21, d/o Harrison and Emeline Swink, the father living, the mother living. Married by J. J. Shoup, Justice of the Peace 20 Feb 1891 at Harrison Swinks Residence in Lower Fork Twp. in Burke County, N.C.

2. There are no Burke County delayed birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates or tombstones for the members of the Joseph Buff family.

3. There are several Burke County Grantor Deeds involving William H. and Viney Buff, but no Grantee Deeds.

4. In Deed P-3:65, W. H. & Vinie E. Buff are selling the 60 acres that came to him as noted in Special Proceedings Docket #6, page 507. This is Lot #3, W. H. Buff's share of Joseph Buff's lands {deceased}, and there is no grantee deed for this acreage, which is rather normal. When an estate was divided, seldom did the grantees bother to take the deed to the court house to have it registered. The Special Proceeding Docket was not examined. It appears this family had gotten into debt and decided to sell out on the 26 Jan 1904. They are on the 1900 Burke County Census and then they just disappear. This deed was not registered until 13 Nov 1912.

5. The above family was not found in the 1910 & 1920 HeritageQuest's censusus online. Also a search in NC & SC did not produce any results. {See Georgia below}

6. Buff Cemetery, Burke County N.C. tombstone transcriptions: Infant Buff, Mar 1909, 5 days old, s/o AT & Roxanna; Fannie Buff, Dec 1830 - 23 Dec 1912 w/o Joseph; Joseph Buff, 52y, 9m, 29d, Aug 1, 1878. {He was born c1826}; H. This is all the information I have on this family.

I'm posting this instead of sending individual emails since it looks like some other people may be researching "Buff".

The wife of Joseph Buff was Fannie Cook. I have a copy of the will of Joseph Buff, but it does not give the names of his children, they are only refered to as "my children".

I have done bits of reasearch on the family of Joseph and Fannie cook Buff since this line links to my direct Buff line.

I'll try to look through my piles of William's and see if I come up with anything.

Vicki

Buff family NC

Seeking information on some of the Buff family in Cleveland co. My mother, b. 1936 was the daughter of Sallie Buff b.1905 in Rutherford Co. Sallie's mother was Mary Buff b. abt. 1888. who married Pink Buff the son of Robert Buff.
I know that Mary's mother was Margaret Buff who became a widow early, but am trying to find which Buff Margaret was married to. I have been told that Mary Buff and Pink Buff were cousins, possible first cousins. This family around 1918 had moved to Wilkes Co. Georgia where Mary's husband Pink was shot. Later they moved to Cherokee Co. SC. Anyone having any information on this line, please contact me at reepn@yahoo.com. Would love to get some information.
My (now deceased) brother in law was the grandson of Florence Etta Schnieder who married Chester Warner Webb. Florence was the daughter of Benjamin Andrew and Mary Serena Lee. I had a time figuring out that Mary Serena Lee and Martha Buff were first cousins, as Mary's father John Conway Jefferson Lee and Martha Buff's mother Nancy Lucinda Lee were brother and sister.. Both Nancy and JCJ Lee were children of Alfred Lee and Elizabeth Jane Selvidge. I've been doing this genealogy for my sister and nieces and nephew.
Let me know if I can help, I've got more.
Jean
gmagmpi@sbcglobal.net
