The following information appears on page 9 of "The Ancestry of Josiah Bull, JR":
"Josiah, the fourth child of John Bull and Mary Closson, was born 1714 at Kingston, Rhode Island. He married, in 1737 at South Kingston, Rhode Island, Ruth Tripp, whose background no one has ever been able to learn. She was likely born in Rhode Island, where several Tripp family records can be found, but nothing has been found to identify her with any of them. No dates of death have been located for either Josiah or Ruth.
"Josiah Bull Sr. was one of the first settlers in Beekman Precinct, and his children's births were recorded in the Oblong Meeting Records. He settled near Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County, where he spent the remainder of his life, and died at an "advanced age". He was a member of the Society of Friends; by trade a millright. He and Ruth were the parents of nine children, eight of whom grew up to manhood, married and reared families. Their names and dates of birth, from "Old Northwest Genealogical Quarterly", published 1900, are: Josiah, 3-6-1738; Mary, 11-3-1740, died 11-2-1748; Joseph, 28-11-1741; Sarah, 25-10-1745; Benjamin, 17-4-1746; Robert, 28-5-1748; *George, 12-11-1751; Henry 1751 (complete date found later: 5-10-1752); Ruth -1754 (complete date found later: 9-9-1754"
*This is the only mention of George in the book.

I am descended of Timothy Bull, the brother of Josiah Bull who married Ruth Tripp. A few years ago I was able to locate and purchase the book, "Descendants of Josiah Bull, Jr. (1738-1813) of Duchess County, New York" by Mary Lynch Young. Mary traces the family in New York and Canada. I am willing to look up information for you.

I have a photograph of Horace Martin (II) and several of his wife Anne Thompson. Their daughter Mary Anne Martin Dickson of Perth / Sharbot Lake in Lanark County Ontario is my Great Grandmother.
PJackson

Thanks for you posting on Daniel S Bull born 1819, I do have him recorded in the 1974 book "The History & Genealogy of William Bull & Sarah Wells". Daniel was the son of William Bull (1776-1823)& Julia Conklin (1790-1843) Julia married Isaac Bull after William's death and moved to Wysox, PA and had 2 more children. I did not have a death date on Daniel Bull, but it makes sense that he moved to Iowa with his brother Angevine Bull sometime after 1850. I show Daniel as marrying a Mary Unknown and with one child Frank Bull born 1848 in Wysox, PA. You can e-mail me directly at bullfamilygenealogist@verizon.net

Look forward to hearing from you

Judy Wood

I am looking to link the Iowa and Nebraska Bulls to the family of William and Sarah Wells Bull.

I have a solid link to Daniel S Bull b 1819 in Orange Co, NY and d 1877 Linn Co, IA.

From the info I've gathered from "The History of Bradford Co, PA" and "Pioneer Families of Orange Co, NY", Daniel was one of William and Julia Conklin Bulls sons. William was the son of Ebenezer and Elizabeth Lamoreaux Bull, Ebenezer was the first son of John and Hanah Holly Bull, and John was the son of William and Sarah Wells Bull.

LDS records also show these relations, but I don't trust the LDS records. They don't require any real proof.

The two books mentioned above are great for secondary sources, but I'm looking for something more to substantiate the link. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Hi there:

Thank you for your quick response. Since I’m at a standstill with my own family research (due to brick walls, etc.), I have offered to help my sister-in-law with hers. William Bull and Sarah Wells were her 7G-grandparents. Her line goes like this:

Peter Bull (1619) m. _______
John Bull m. Joane Clark
William Bull m. Sarah Wells
Thomas Bull m. Mary Carr
Absalom Bull & Elizabeth Sweezy
Cadwalader Bull m. Rebecca Watkins
Sarah Jane Bull m. Hiram Smith
George Howell Smith m. Eveline Pote
May Smith m. William Pfeiffer (her grandparents)

We have a book entitled “Ancestors of Hiram Smith and his wife Sarah Jane Bull” (Frost, 1927). This is where we’ve gotten most of our info so far, but there is no wife listed for Peter Bull.

My sister-in-law and I are married to Parkers (originally from South Carolina), and there’s a strong likelihood that our Parkers are connected to the SC Bulls, which is why I was asking about them.

Thanks again,

Jody Parker

Hi Jody

Thanks for inquiring on the William Bull & Sarah Wells' line, are you connected to a Bull family?

1)We have found LDS records showing a Peter Bull (1619-1680) married to Eleanor Simson (1621-1684) both of Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England and married Jan 15, 1639 in Tettenhall, England (nothing else except church records). Their son John, may have been married twice 1st to Joane Clark, 2nd wife unknown (2nd wife might be the mother of William Bull Feb 1689- Feb 1755)

2) I am looking into finding a SC Bull male to do a DNA test currently. I have had 3 male Bull's off of William Bull and we have a solid group (match all 46 markers exactly) to compare against and prove

Hope to hear back from you,

Judy Wood
Bull Family Genealogist

Two questions that perhaps you can answer:

1) Has the parentage of Peter Bull of Wolverhampton, England (William Bull’s grandfather) been determined, or who his wife was? (I’ve seen many listings for an “Ellenor” but nothing more specific than that.)

2) Has any connection to the Bull family of South Carolina (originally from Kinghurst Hall, Warwickshire, England) been established?

Many thanks for any info you can provide.

Jody Parker

Joan,

I've answered my own question, with your helpful posting. Below is a full citation for the subject book as given by the Wisconsin Historical Society Library for their pamphlet collection catalog call #99-298:

Title: The Bull family history : direct lineage from Edward Bull, Donnington, Co., Gloucester, Eng., about 1620, to John Wilson Bull, his children and their descendants, to the year 1970 / Nancy Jean "Crump" Fischbach.

One of their reference librarians promptly replied to my e-mail request for any info on the family of the subject Nathan Bull as follows:

"Page 55 of "Bull Family History" shows John Bull, grandson of Edward Bull, marrried to Mary Closson and lists their children: Isaac, John, Hannah, Josiah, Nathan, Timothy, Jeremiah, Jacob, Abigail, and Ruth; but thereafter traces only the descendants of Timothy. Page 5 shows that Nathan was born about 1715 and died February 20, 1813. There is no further mention of his family."

The bottom line for me is that the subject book has no info on the children of Nathan Bull, including his alleged son, John Bull.

Thanks for the lead..........Kent

Thanks for your message. Yes, still very much interested in following up. We do indeed seem to have common ancestors. Elizabeth's husband, Joseph Bull, seems to be my 1st cousin 5 times removed. His grandfather Edward and my 4th great-grandfather Joseph were brothers. Their parents were Edward Bull b.1678 and Rebecca Papworth b.1675. I have traced the Bulls back to Edward's father William b. abt 1640, m. Rose. I have managed to trace the Papworths back much farther, to about 1520. Of course, much of this is rather hard to be sure of. If any of this is of interest to you, let me know. According to my research, your Alice married Thomas Ashcroft. I was in contact with a person also descended from Alice, a certain Angela Ward, but have lost contact with her. She had done a lot of research on your branch, I think.

Hi Judy (and Keith),

I followed up on your findings regarding John Bull, alleged brother of the subject Aaron Bull, with Keith's advice to look for Friends Meeting records in the South Kingston (aka Kingstown) area of Rhode Island.

The following linked Web document includes transcriptions of the Quaker South Kingstown monthly meeting's marriage records and birth & death records:

http://www.kouroo.info/kouroo/places/towns/KingstonRI.pdf

The 1727 - 1745 births of 9 children of Ephraim & Patience Bull, listed on page 92, are the only Bull entries which I found. (Elsewhere, I read that Ephraim married patience Rodman.) There is no birth for a John Bull. BUT there are two births for Thomas Bull: 1st on 9m. 7, 1740 and 2nd 12m. 19, 1742. MAYBE the original records actually have these births for Tho. and Jno. and are hard to read. I'm not sure if the 12th month for the 2nd Thomas (or John?) is Dec. or Feb. I don't know which calendar system was used by the Quakers in 1727-1745.

The LDS Family History Library catalog has a 35 mm film #1329 which appears to be availble for loan to local FHCs with the births, deaths & marriages, 1743 - 1892, for the Society of Friends, South Kingston Monthly Meeting (Washington Co., RI: Gurneyite). If it has no records before 1743, it won't have all of the above referenced 1727-1745 births.

The LDS IGI has the birth of John Bull to parents Ephraim & Patience Bull on 19 Feb 1742 at South Kingston, Washington, Rhode Island. It's source is "Vital record of Rhode Island, 1636-1850: first series, births, marriages and deaths" by James N. Arnold. This book is available at the local SAR Library here in Louisville. That same source is listed by the LDS IGI for its birth of Aaron Bull to parents Nathan & Abijah Bull on 27 Aug 1746 at South Kingston, Washington, Rhode Island. I didn't find Aaron's birth in the above referenced transcribed Quaker document but it MAY be in the above referenced LDS film of 1743-1842 Quaker records.

The LDS IGI has the marriage of Nathan Bull to Abigail Inman on 27 Jan 1744 at South Kingston, Washington, Rhode Island. The source is described as an extracted marriage record for the listed locality but the link for the 1706-1885 records source film #0931840 seemed to be broken.

Based on all of the above, I have concluded that the John Bull said to be born 19 Feb 1742 was the son of Ephraim & Patience Bull, and NOT a son of Nathan & Abijah Bull.

I'm still left with no documentary proof that Nathan & Abigail (aka Abijah / Abiah / Abian) had a son John Bull said by many to be born ABT 1745. MAYBE that birth guess is based on the above 1744 marriage record.

Kent in Louisville, KY

Hi Kent.

At the time I submitted my Bull tree, I had only found 4 children; I have subsequently found reference to two John Bull's as potential child(ren) of Nathan and Abigail/Abijah: 1) John, born about 1745, and 2) John, born 19 Feb 1742/43 in South Kingston, RI (no parents were listed in this birth record). Given that Nathan and Abijah lived in South Kingston from their marriage in 1740 until their move to NY in 1746/47, I think it is POSSIBLE that John is their child(ren), but at this time I cannot say for sure. I have not found reference (so far) to any other children. Sorry, this is all the information I have on this potential John(s).

Judy

His Dad, AMOS, was in and out of the Society for various reasons. They came from New York up into Upper Canada ..
Hi Lacey,

Your recent reply to my e-mail was so helpful that I'm posting it below as a guide to others who may be able to help you more than I can at this time:

*************
Hi Kent,

From the information that I have found on the site which matches with what my mom thinks she knows, Leonard Turnbull was born
Feb. 14, 1913, in Sullivan, Mo. and died in 2004. His wife Velma, is still alive as far as I can find anything, and I found a maiden name of possibly Lawrence for her, however, I saw another one as well. My mom tells me that they had 9 kids, my dad being one of them, Gary Turnbull was born in 1951, and died in 1998, he had a daughter named Chelsea with another woman, Chelsea would be about 33 right now. As far as Velma and Garys other kids, I found his obituary naming 6 kids, but no mention of my father at all, thier names are Leonard Turnbull of Collinsville, Ill., Patricia J. Turnbull of Snowflake, Ariz., Robert Turnbull of Collinsville, Ill., James Turnbull of Quicilum, Dennis Turnbull of Olalla, Wash., and Pamela Sue Turnbull of Port Orchard, Wash. and his brothers name is Jeff Turnbull of Palo Pinto, Texas.

This is all the info that I have found so far. Thanks for your help!
*************

I see that the LDS Social Security Death Index (LDS SSDI) has Gary's birth on 30 Sep 1951 and that his SSN was issued in MO. Since the 2004 obituary for Gary Turnbull's alleged father, Leonard Turnbull, does not mention Gary, I suggest you contact the State of MO to look for Gary's 1951 birth certificate, which should give his birth parents. If you can verify that Leonard Turnbull was indeed his father, you should contact Craig (last name unknown to me) whose RootsWeb World Connect database ancestral report for Leonard Lawrence Turnbull is linked below:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=AHN&d...

Craig appears to be a serious researcher who may be able to help you further. Craig doesn't have Leonard's death on 11 Oct 2004 in Madison Co., IL, as given in the LDS SSDI, but he does have Leonard's birth as both you and the LDS SSDI have it. His above-linked ancestral report goes back to Thomas Washington Turnbull whose 9 Sep 1861 birth and 28 Aug 1930 death are both given at Washington Co., MO. It appears he hasn't yet found the parents of Thomas Washington Turnbull.

I have communicated with a descendant of a David & Martha Turnbull who were married at Washington Co., MO in 1875. I can find no connection between David Turnbull's line, given at the following linked page from my own database, and that of the above Thomas Washington Turnbull (TWT):

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=AHN&d...

You may also want to contact Sharon Basgal, whose Ancestry.com World Connect database ancestral report for TWT is linked below:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=AHN&d...

Sharon has TWT's father as William Grant Turnbull (WGT), who died at Washington Co., MO, on 20 May 1896. Surprisingly, Sharon then has William H. Summers as WGT's father. You should find out from Sharon if Summers was the adoptive father of WGT or what evidence there is that they are related.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help but I hope I have given you some leads. I'm disappointed I didn't find a connection between your Turnbull line and mine, which goes back to the Bull family of 1806 Knox Co., KY, and earlier Grainger Co., TN.
