Searching for Mary Ruth Prater Brown

Hi,

I hope this isn't too off topic, but I'm looking for a way to get in touch with Mary Ruth Prater Brown. When we started corresponding about our common Carroll family tree a few years ago, her email address on Ancestry.com was mary5092@aol.com. But that address no longer works. She had asked for a copy of a photo of Sherwood Carroll and Martha "Patty" York that we have in our family, and I finally found it.

Any help gratefully accepted.

Best regards,
Mark
WV Heritage" book:
THE COLONIAL CARROLLS - The six Carroll brothers came to Maryland in the early 1600s. It is rumored that the name was O'Carroll. The family probably dropped the "o" because the Irish were not popular in the early days of our nation. The Carrolls were Catholic but some of their descendants became Protestant. The Carrolls emigrated from Maryland to Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Virginia.
Our ancestor William Carroll lived in Western Maryland. I do not know who he married but his children were: Charles, Elizabeth, Element, Philip, Peter, and Samual b.13 Aug 1857, my great-great grandfather.
Samuel emigrated to Greenbrier County, Virginia and married a Stephens from Tennessee. Their children were: Clement, John, Samuel, two daughters, and James Tillman b.1790, my great grandfather. In 1811 he married Margaret Black of Greenbrier County, Virginia. Margaret was a sister to Adam Black who emigrated to Cabell County, Virginia and became the Tavern and Toll House keeper on the James River and Kanawha Turnpike.
James and Margaret followed the Blacks and the Morrises to Cabell County. James purchased land lying near the falls of the Mud River about six miles from the mouth of the river at Barboursville. He lived in a store house until his brick home was built across the Toll Road from Adam Black's tavern. Soon after moving into his new house, he began to purchase land from James Garrett. The first deed was written in 1818. James continued to buy these acres laying along Mahone Creek and Mud River, near Hamlin, until he owned 1500 acres. The last few acres were purchased from Mrs. Garett in 1845.
James Tillman Carroll sold his home on the Toll Road to his daughter, Elizabeth and her husband, David Harshbarger. Hew moved to his land near Hamlin which was about one mile from Hamlin. James was an exhorter in the Methodist Church. Of his descendants bout a dozen were preachers - all of them Methodists. Many of the Carroll descendants were school teachers. Carroll District in Lincoln County was named for James Carroll.
James Tillman and Margaret Carroll's children were: Samuel m.Lucinda Swann; Charles m.Mary Bryan; James T. Jr. m. #1Martha Roberts, m#2 Susan Knuckles; William Addison m.Nancy Margaret Bryan, Mahala m.James Mahone; Nancy m.William Mahone; and Lucinda m.George Corn.
William Addison Carroll was New York grandfather.
John Carroll M. Henrietta Slavens - ties to Grayson, KY ???

I am looking for a list of their children. We believe they have a son named Claby or nicknamed Claby that is my FIL's father.

My FIL is Richard Warren Carroll and he was born in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He was born in 1920. I have been unable to locate any records that tie him to the Grayson family except word of mouth from FIL. He says that his father Claby Carroll was born in 1881, but didn't say where. He also says that John and Henrietta are his grandparents. That would make John Carroll and Nancy Damron his Grandparents.

A few years back, he went to KY and went to the reunions for both sides of the Daniel Carroll families (m. Rebecca, and after Rebecca died he m. Mary Sturgill).

We are looking for any information we can find that will link the family in the time we have missing.

Tina and Rick Carroll

Carroll line

I have posted this on other Carroll forums but not sure about this one. It seems that many people with the Carroll surname have been told they are descendent of CC of C (including myself) and has spurred people to investigate there genealogy. If your ancestors were Catholic and originally lived in and around MD there is a good chance you are distantly related to both Daniel Carroll signer of the constitution and CC of C the signer of the Declaration of Independence. If your ancestors were historically Protestant (especially Presbyterian)and originally from around the PA area you are almost certainly from the Scotch/irish branch of Carrolls.

I have made a web page for our Carroll Family Bible so it will go on giving information to family members. The bible is dated from the mid 1800s. It is very worn. The first entry in the bible is that of C.V. (Curtis Victor) Carroll. We know his parents were Stephen Carroll and Perizade Dekle. Their children all born in Georgia. Please see my web page for more information on the family upline and downline as I know it. Also includes some family pictures from the bible. Any additional information or correction is welcome.
James Carroll - Baltimore/Irvington 1877-?

I am looking for descendants of James and (Mary) Agnes Carroll - brother and sister-in-law of my great-grandfather Joseph P Carroll. They were also brother/sister-in-law to John J Carroll, Charles F J Carroll, and Mary Carroll. They were married in Baltimore circa 1900-1902. From what I can tell they had at least 7 children. Their names were Charles, Dorothy, James, Theresa, Agnes, Margaret, and Genevieve. They lived on South Schroeder St. in West Baltimore until they moved to Collins St. in Irvington sometime in the 1920's. The children were all born between about 1902 and 1918. One of their sons, known as "Hossie", remained in the Irvington area, probably for the rest of his life. I am looking for any information or photographs that may still exist of my great-grandfather and his siblings/family.

There seems to be one family mainly of this name in the York, SC and neighboring NC and SC county areas with Carroll as their heritage. There has been no clear sign of a second Carroll family not related to the family that I research and try to gather together.

There are other groups of Carrolls possibly related but there is little I know on them.

Any descendant of a southern Carroll ancestor is invited to write and see if we can link up to the ones around the NC/SC border or post here if you desire to seek out more help from the public or those members of the public looking for such information. For the moment there is no expert on this family that I have encountered but I am sure there are some out there who can help us, so posting might be best, but the choice is yours
I am looking for any information about the Carroll family who lived in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. I know that Peter came over from Ireland some time before 1841, unfortunately I don't know what part of Ireland he came from. The family legend has it that he came over after being excommunicated from the Catholic Church. His son Patrick, who married Elizabeth Stansfield @1847, is my direct ancestor. Would love to hear from anyone connected.

My great, great, great grandmother was born Lucy Carroll in Spartanburg, SC, October 9, 1809. Her obituary(July 25, 1900 in Chattanooga) does not give the names of her father or mother but her father was supposed to have fought in the Revolutionary War. They moved into Indian Territory in the northwest corner of Georgia in 1821. She married a Manning Tidwell(but he was called Frank)in 1830 and her first two children were born in South Carolina (1830 & 1832) before the family returned to Georgia. She had 5 more children in Georgia and her husband died in 1849.If anyone has information on these Spartanburg Carrolls, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am doing research on Barney Carlin who came over from Ireland between 1872-1873. When they got off the ship their name was changed from Carlin to Carroll. He was married to Katy Lahern, but she died before 1880. They had Mike Carlin "Carroll" 1870 in IRE, Rosa 1873 in IRE, and then my grgr grandmother Alice in 1873 in Ohio. Has anyone ever heard of any of this?

carrolls from co. clare ireland and hornell,ny

I am searching for any information on any relatives of the Carroll family that emigrated from Co. Clare or Limerick, Ireland and settled in the Hornell or Steuben Co. area of NY in the late 1800's. There was Michael and Thomas Carroll who both worked for the Erie RR during that time. Michael stayed in Hornell and lived on Delaware Ave. and married Mary Burchal and had at least 5 children. Thomas and his wife Katherine moved to Chicago, children unknown. They had a sister Margaret who stayed in Ireland (Co Clare) with her husband Thomas Irwin. She would have been my Great Great Grandmother on my paternal side. Any correspondence would be appreciated!!

PLEASE NOTE, THIS WAS POSTED FOR REFERENCE ONLY. I AM NOT RELATED TO, NOR AM I RESEARCHING THIS FAMILY, I’VE ONLY DONE A COPY AND PASTE FROM OUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER FYI.

THIS INFO HAS BEEN POSTED WITH THE PERMISSION OF THE EDITOR OF THE COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD.

Floyd Arnold Carroll
Posted: Friday, Apr 04, 2008 - 11:29:48 am PDT
COLUMBIA BASIN HERALD, MOSES LAKE, WASHINGTON STATE

Floyd Arnold Carroll, of Wilson Creek, passed away in his home on April 2, 2008.

Floyd was born April 20, 1931, in Neodesha, Kan., to Hugh and Lucy Carroll. He was raised in the Ephrata/Wilson Creek area and attended school in Ephrata up until the eighth grade. At age 15, Floyd joined the cement finishers' union, working on the Grand Coulee Dam construction as well as other projects. He continued to ply his trade until the age of 75, helping to build the Columbia Basin and pass on his skills to a younger generation of cement finishers.

In 1952, Floyd enlisted in the Army, where he served his country in the Korean War. After his time in the service, he returned home to marry his loving wife Helen.

Floyd was an avid outdoorsman, spending his free time hunting, fishing and camping throughout Eastern Washington. Around the house, he enjoyed working on automobiles, tending his garden and raising animals. Over the years, Floyd has kept a variety of birds, including exotic pheasants, peacocks, and racing pigeons. He was a member of the American Legion, the National Pigeon Association and the Presbyterian Church.

Floyd was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. In addition to the countless individuals he helped in his time with us, he served as a member of the Wilson Creek City Council and as a volunteer firefighter in Wilson Creek. He also played a key role in the restoration of the Wilson Creek Bank.

As much as he did for the community and for those he hardly knew, Floyd's greatest impact was on the friends and family he loved and cared for. Floyd will be remembered and loved by friends and family, all of which are thankful for the time they had with him, but will miss him nonetheless.

Floyd is survived by his wife Helen, sister Treva Allen, two daughters Debra Jean Sharp (Don) and Patricia Anne Vehrs (Greg), son Harold Marcus Carroll, six grandchildren Kellie Marie Ribail (Ken), Jessie Lynn True (Ben), Anthony Alan Vehrs (Tiffany), Starr C. Carroll, Kristine Kay Helvy (Mike) and Ricky Don Norman (Deidre); as well as great-grandchildren Lane and Landon Ribail, Abby and Ella True and Brayden Helvy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Millicent and Francis and two brothers Don and Lloyd.

Those desiring to leave the family their condolences may do so at the Kaysers' Chapel of Memories Web site, which can be found at: www.kayserschapel.com. Donations in memory of Floyd may be made to the Wilson Creek Presbyterian Church.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 5, at noon at the Wilson Creek Cemetery, with a lunch reception to follow at the Wilson Creek School commons.
Olive Carroll ?-1920

I would appreciate any resources anyone could point me toward in this search.
Olive Carroll married James Shaw and had 3 children that I know of (she died in 1920, ten days after her sons, my grandfather and his twin were born.)
The twins, Carl and Clarence, had an older sister, Margaret. Clarence is my grandfather (1920-1989).
James Shaw remarried after Olive Carroll's death and had 3 children, still living.
Clarence lived in Waynesburg, PA, Greene County. I am not sure where his parents originated from, though there is other family in the same general area in Southwestern PA.
I vaguely remember meeting others from the Carroll family when I was very young. My gfather, Clarence, died when I was 4 so I haven't heard much about his mother or her family. I would love to know more about her, her parents names at least, and anything else about them. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mia

If you are of this line and stuck on anything, send me a message and I will see if it's in the book. I will be updating my tree over the next week (it's public) so all the info will be there eventually. The Carroll lines include the Coles and Reiders, among others.
