Searching for further info. on the above. They m. Feb 04, 1790, NY state. Henry was b. Mar 19 1767, NY, d. Feb 04 1853 pos. NY & Anna was b. Apr 22 1796, NY. She d. Dec 31, 1850 (pos. NY?). I think their children are: Henry 1790, Ira 1792, Wm. 1794, Ann 1796, Alanson 1798, Electra 1800, Chauncy 1803. I believe Alanson m. Hannah Thomas who was b. in New Hamshire. Only the states are known in all cases not the county or the township/town etc. Alanson & Hannah may have married in Ontario, Canada. They had 3 known children in Canada. Any further info. especially Henry's parents & or Anna's. Any census info. would also be appreciated for Henry & Anna. I have very little extra info. especially in the USA. It is not known 100% that this is my correct Alanson but the data matches very well. He is the only one known currently that came to Canada but others may have. Thank you

Can't tell you much about them themselves but I can tell you that Ballinahown no longer exists. That entire township was flooded out in 1944 when the River Liffey was dammed to create the Blessington Lakes/Poulaphouca Reservoir. The following URL marks the spot where the Clarke family homestead may well have been:
http://ims0.osiemaps.ie/website/publicviewer/main.aspx#V1,69...
You can zoom at the left and overlay an historic map from the right which effectively removes the water so you can see the old townland (with a red line border) in the 1820s.

I also have further pages of tree I think from my Uncle Philip but some family members have stated there are errors in chains and so I welcome opbversations and corrections and additions to my draft tree. Trouble is I have no idea what Tree I have posted at Ancestry, if any, and therefore could send you pdf of my up to date draft for you to have a go at.
Daniel Clarke, New Orleans and his daughter Mrs. Whitney, later Mrs. Gains

I have no connection to this family - just found this while doing other research. It is from the March 5, 1852 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Gazette:

"Mrs. Gains, whose case is now fully settled against her by the supreme court at Washington, commenced the suit nearly twenty years ago, when se was Mrs. Whitney, to recover a large estate in New Orleans left by Daniel Clarke, her father, the possession of which she claimed as his legitimate daughter and legal heir. General Gains, her late husband, expended in prosecuting the claim two estates at the south, which he sold for $100,000. He also spent his pay and emoluments, amounting to $6000 a year, for the time he lived with Mrs. Gains; and her friends had advanced to her considerable sums, which were also expended in the suit. After Mrs. Gains succeeded in the Paterson suit before the Louisiana court, the other parties offered to compromise, but the offer was declined by Gen. Gains. The New Orleans Courier says that 'the mortification occasioned to Mrs. Gains must be very great. She was confident of success, and her extravagant hopes had completely gotten the mastery of her reason. She even condemned the counsel on the other side for their zeal in behalf of their clients, and thought that strong opposition wrong and oppressive."

Hello,

I'm looking for information about Benjamin Clark/Clarke who appeared in Stonington, New London County, CT in the 1810 census (p. 139) and 1820 census (p. 572).

Based on the 1810 census, he must have been born between 1765 and 1784; it was probably at the earlier end of that range since he had four children under ten at the time of the 1810 census.

Where was he for the 1800 census? I haven't been able to find him.

Was his wife Frances? If so, who were her parents?

Who were the parents of Benjamin Clark?

It may be his daughter Thankful (1800-1884) who married Raymond Green/Greene.

Thanks!
Judi

There was also Hugh, William, Alexander and Patrick living close by in the adjoining parish of Creggan. It is obvious that this was ' Clark territory ' and the name Clarksbridge confirms that. There is also a road in the area called Clerkes Road.

Hello there my name is Christine Bertoni nee Treleaven and I am researching a family tree for the surname "Clark" Clarke"
My grandmother had in her possession several copies of Deeds the first being:

WILLIAM CLARKE CLARK order in council for crown grant of 100 acres for himself and 150 acres for his family consisting of a wife and two ten children in the 10th township district Mecklenburgh signed at Kingston Ontario 1791 (this name appears with and without the "e" in several place on the document

JOSEPH CLARKE CLARK , order in council for a crown grant of land in the name of Joseph Clark Clarke (this name appears with and without the "e" in several place on the document including his signature. This deed was 200 acres for given to him by the Crown as a free grant as his father William was a U.E. Loyalilst. This deed is for property known as Township of Camden County of Lennox & Addington being Lot 47 in Concession 8. This document gives this land at his 21st birthday and it is dated April 1808 giving a birthdate for Joseph of 1787.

JAMES CLARKE CLARK , An affidavit stating he is the son of William and 21 years of ago and is to receive crown grant for land in the name of James Clark for 200 acres as the son of William Clarke Clark U.E. Loyalist of the township of Adolphustown dated January 1816 giving a birthdate for James of 1795. (this name appears with and without the "e" in several place on the document

MARY CLARKE CLARK born 1789 in canada Lennox & Addington married 1808 to BELYATTEE OUTWATER born 1785 in Dutchess County New York and she was also granted land and I also have information on her husbands side for their tree which contains names such as OUTWATER, PARKS, HAWLEY, RUTTAN, HUFFMAN etc etc)

JOHN CLARK order in council for land grant as son of U.E. loyalist given at age 21 making his birth date 1810.

My grandmother was Hattie Estelle Weller born 1890 in Rochester NY. NOTE:(her mother was visting friends there when she went into labour) her mother was SARAH ADDIE CLARKE CLARK born 1864 & her father Thomas E. Weller born 1864 and they were married December 23, 1885 in Halibiurton Ontario Canada. They had other children a male Milton Conrad Weller (who I understand contracted Mumps and did not bear any children?) and Evelyn Marie Weller who died in her twenties never married nor children. My grandmother Hattie married Wilfred Warner Treleaven my maiden name and there is a full published history of the Treleaven's dating back to 1507 and which I participated in the completion of.

So it is additional information about William before and after tha I need help with and was wondering if perhaps you have come across any of these names.

My grandmother and her parents lived in the Brighton, Coburg area. Any help would be appreciated as with many other amatuer genealogists all of my senior family members have passed away & my generation is the last one and I would like to complete this section of my tree
Hi again,

I forgot to add the footnote. Until I can prove that Mrs. Clara (DEXTER) YOUNG of Killingly, CT, was the birth-mother of my grandmother, I cannot prove that her grandfather, James CLARK, was my ancestor.

But, there are new clues. A "very distant cousin" in CT has received some old photos. One is of Mrs. Mary (CLARK) DEXTER. We compared it to a photo of my grandmother, and we both see a family resemblance.

(The researcher in CT is descended from an older half-brother of Mrs. DEXTER - with the LAVARE name.)

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

James CLARK / CLARKE, born 1790-1800 -- somewhere

Hello,

I probably haven't mentioned my mysterious ancestor, James CLARK or CLARKE, on this Board in a long time. *

He is a big mystery for many reasons. First, we have no idea where he was born, not even which country. And, he married in Westport, MA, in 1829 to a woman who was born in 1800. So, I can only guess that he was born 1790 - 1800.

He "appears" in Little Compton, RI, in ~1827, and marries nearby in Westport to the widow, Mrs. Rhoda (MANCHESTER) LAVARE. She had 3 children from her first marriage, and then they had a daughter in ~1836 in Westport. Unfortunately, James "disappears" during the 1840's.

James might have been the man who got on a ship in 1844 which was heading out to the Indian Ocean. He "deserted" in Australia in 1845. He might have been the James who was in the Province of Quebec around 1825. If this is all James, he was a "traveling man."

The daughter, Mary Anna CLARK, married a man from Killingly, CT (Windham Co.), John DEXTER. Researchers tell me there were CLARK / CLARKE families in that area at the time. So, one suspicion is that Mary visited her father's relatives and that's how she met John.

John and Mary DEXTER in Killingly had 3 daughters, but lost 2 of them. The surviving daughter became Mrs. Clara YOUNG. Around 1888 John and Mary left CT and moved to Melrose, MA. At some point they took in a baby girl and adopted her in 1892. That little girl was re-named to Mary Anna Clark DEXTER, and she grew up to become my grandmother.

This is a long, complicated story. I've told it many times on the Lists and Boards in past years, so there are more details there.

I have reason to believe that Mrs. Mary (CLARK) DEXTER had ties to her CLARK relatives, both in CT and in MA. She died in 1899, and my grandmother was re-orphaned. She spent till ~1910 in orphanages. When she married in 1911, she stated that her birth-father was William CLARK. We have no idea who that was.

My imagination can come up with many possibilities. But, my "educated guess" is that the Mrs. Clara YOUNG in Killingly had a pregnancy outside of her marriage in the summer of 1888. While my grandmother was living in the DEXTER home in Melrose, MA, while she was a baby to Age 10, she overheard conversations which told her that the DEXTER Adoptive parents "knew" who her birth-parents were. They never told her.

That's all I'll say for the moment. There is information and more details in the archives of the Lists and Boards - which I've posted.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(My grandmother knew the only child of Abner and Clara YOUNG; he was Earle YOUNG, and he visited his grandparents' home in Melrose on school vacations. She found him after they had both married and compared memories. Earle asked his mother, but his mother went to her dying days proclaiming that she didn't even know that her parents had adopted a little girl. This was another lie, and the 2 couples had visited with each other until the parents' deaths in 1899 and 1905.

Adding to the mystery is that, when Mrs. DEXTER died, her remains were brought back to Killingly to be buried. But, 6 yrs. later, when Mr. DEXTER died, his remains were buried in an relatively unmarked grave on the grounds of the Tewksbury State Hospital (MA).)

Hi Christine,

I can only offer an FYI. One of my mystery ancestors is a James CLARK or CLARKE who was probably born in the 1790 to 1800 timeframe. The big problem is that we have no idea where he was born, not even which country.

He "appears" in Rhode Island around 1827 and marries in nearby Westport, MA, in 1829. He fathers a child in 1836 there, and then "disappears" during 1840's.

We have a few "guesses" that he might have been in Canada around 1825 and then, when he disappeared, he might have gone to Australia. So, if it's the same man, he was a "traveling man." But, I seem to think he had ties to Connecticut, as his daughter met a man from Killingly, CT, to marry.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(James CLARK / CLARKE and his daughter, Mary Anna CLARK, are part of a BIG family mystery regarding the birth and childhood of my grandmother. As Mrs. Mary DEXTER, she and her husband adopted a little girl while in their 50's.)

I have been researching for over 15 years. This past year I started working on a history project for Knox County, Dist 19 Beaver Ridge [Karns], Dist 9 Solway & part of Dist 4 Anderson Co. TN finding the families that moved to this area prior to 1840. This family list is growing, I have 60+ surnames and over 100 total that lived in the above districts . If you believe you have family that came from this area first check the 1830/1840 census on my Blog.
East Tennessee Footprints

http://easttnfootprints.blogspot.com/

I am interest in contacting family members that may be interested in adding a brief history of the families and will share what I have found if you see a surname that you may believe is a family line. Pryor to 1860 a lot of the sons moved to Texas and Missouri.

I am writing a book and plan to publish it this fall, 2010. Printed copies will be given to the Historical Society of Knoxville. I plan on including all the families that continued to live in this area through 1860. I will include land records, census, tax and court records if found. I will not be doing a genealogy study of the family lines but I plan on doing a family group sheet using census records.

Barbara Clifton Guinn Knoxville TN
If you find a surname or have a question contact me by email tnfootprints@gmail.com
Richard A. Clarke of Aberdeen b. feb 6 1876-? NY&Ontario

My great grandmother Zonia (nee Sophia Helena Mirskia) was a Russian born actress who married an Aberdeen born actor named Richard A Clarke in NYC in 1915. She was born in 1892 and he was born in 1876 but gave his birth years as 1877 and 1879. She was a stage actress, he acted on stage and a some silent films, including "Betsy Ross", "The Iron Ring", and "The Spurs of Sybil" amongst others (too many to list here). There were two daughters, my great aunt Mary Lucile Clarke, and my grandmother Ruth Virginia Clarke. He may not have been Ruth's father.
In 1918 while Sophie Allan and Clarke were performing in the Boston run of "The man who came back" at the Plymouth theater, Clarke kidnapped the children and almost managed to spirit them away by train to Toronto where his mother, Mary Proudfoot Clarke lived. She recieved a phone call from him and I belive called the authorities. My great grandmother took the train up and got the girls and came back with her mother-in-law and no husband.
The girls may or may not have seen Mr. Clarke again after that.
We know that in 1930 he was lodging in Manhattan. We are told that he died sometime in the 1930's but aren't sure when. Sometime in the 1920's he was working in Kitchner, Ontario, according to some photos and play bills.
In 1918 his mother was in Toronto and perhaps he died there. We just don't know. We would like to know where he was buried.
In the late 20's my great grandmother changed her name to Zonia and married a man named Sargent. The children became his.
My great grandmother was very careful not to badmouth Mr. Clarke in any way when pressed for information. She meerly said that they were married and then they were not.
We don't know if Mr. Clarke ever re-married or if my great aunt has any living cousins. She and my grandmother ofcourse are deceased.
http://www.othersargent.com/clarkes
The only picture of Mr. Clarke I have are from photocopies of playbills and newspapers. So I appologize for the quality. I've never seen one where he was not "made up".
Wanda Dow m. Donald Clarke

I am seeking info on Wanda Dow. She was born in Pennsylvania in 1898 and moved to Portland, Oregon by 1910. She
married Donald Clarke (in 1917 in Seattle, WA), and John Newman (in 1920 in Vancouver, WA). In May, 1923, Wanda had a daughter named Dorothy. Who was Dorothy's father? Wanda may have married to a Rustemeyer in 1924 or 1925. Wanda lived in Portland from about 1917 until her death in 1942.

Did Wanda have any children by Donald Clarke?

Gwen,

I just sent you an email too with the immigration records for Philip Smyth and Patrick Clarke. They came over in 1913.

Also, yes to your other two questions, I am from Chicago and Angie is my aunt! So now I'm really intrigued on how you know her.

Sincerely,
Joe Agnello
agnellolaw@yahoo.com

My grf was raised in townland Curkish, Bailieb. Hi mother had sis married to Smyth I think of Wilton townland. Not sure which sis but my grgrm was Rose McPhillips of Lisnalski. I think Wilton and Lisn. are side by side.

When did your Philip come to the US. My uncle Patrick Clarke came over after 1908, possibly as late as 1920-25, and returned some time later. Worked as a streetcar man. He returned to Bailieborough and died there around 1950.

Joe, are you from Chicago? If yes are you related to Angie Agnello that graduated Siena HS in 1960?

Gwen
g4522@hotmail.com

Hello Gwen,

You Maggie doesn't sound like the one I had in mind. The one I was thinking of was a close friend (and probably a distant cousin) of my Great-Grandmother Rose Sullivan. I cna't find it at the momment, but I know that the Maggie Clarke connected to my family died in 1917 or 1918 of sickness, likely the influenza that killed so many people at that time.

If your Sullivan and Clarke families are from Bailieborough though, I have to imagine we are likely related. My Great-Grandparents, Rose Sullivan and Philip Smyth (changed to Smith in Chicago) were both from there, and Rose's grandmother, my great-great-great-grandmother, was Catherine Clark (unsure if there was an "e" at the end or not) also from Bailieborough.

When Philip came to the US, he came over with his friend Patrick Clarke, also from Bailieborough. Both listed that they were going to Patrick's brother James Clarke who lived at 680 South Aberdeen in Chicago. I can email you the immigration record if you think there is a connection.

I don't recognize the other names though, but I'll ask my cousins.

Also, do you know which part of Bailieborough they were from? Rose was from Cordoagh, but I'm not sure about Philip.

Sincerely,
Joe Agnello
agnellolaw@yahoo.com

Joe, I am a cousin to the poster of original msg. Our Margaret(Maggie) Clarke actually married a James Sullivan in Chicago. Margaret died in August of 1903 still in her 20's. Is it possible that your Rose was a sister-in-law or a niece of James. They are buried in Mt Olivet on Chicago's south side. Others in adjoining graves are Patrick dob 9/19/1959, Minnie dob 4/10/68 and Alice 2/16/53. All last named Sullivan. If This ios our Maggie that you refer to Kim and I would love any info you would have.
Gwen Ckarke Breen
g4522@hotmail.com

I wrote to the State of New York Department of Health to ask for an archive search. I paid a fee (about $20), and asked them to look for my ancestor's name in a marriage between 1901-1909. They couldn't find it, but sent me photocopies of the two "closest matches".

My Clarkes came from County Cavan to New York and Canada in the mid-1840s.

Good luck finding yours! If there's a murder involved it would surely have made the news, at least locally. Keep on searching...

I am looking for Michael Clarke who married Martha Grant some
time in 1945 to 1948. They lived in Rosyln Pa.Do you have any
Clarke's from Northern Ireland? How did you find these marriage certificates? I found them on a census with all his
children listed. He married Martha after his first wife died.
Also he shot Martha at home and then killed himself and I can't find it in any newspapers. Thanks Jean

In the effort to trace my ancestor Robert E. Clarke's second marriage (which I did find at last!) I received two "close but no cigar" records from the State of New York, and thought I should publicize them here, in case it helps someone else. They are:

Robert E. Clarke married Mabelle E. Krantz on November 13, 1909 in Monroe County, N.Y.

Robert Elwood Clark married Sarah H. Meyers on Sept. 8, 1908 in the city of Buffalo, N.Y.

I can supply the rest of the details (place of birth, parents' names, etc.) if anyone is interested.

Richard Dewey Clarke (1853-1921)

For those interested in this line, I've located a death record for Richard Dewey Clarke, b. 9-6-1853 (Derbyshire, England), and died of TB on 5-5-1921 (Mt. Airy, Surry County, North Carolina, USA). He's buried in Oakdale Cemetery, Mt. Airy, NC. Shows his parents were Henry Clarke and Annie Bentley, all from Derbyshire. His death was reported by Lillian Clarke Houston, of Richmond, Virginia, USA. It did not show a name for his wife and there is no marriage record in Surry County for him.

Bob Carter
Greensboro, NC, USA

Looking on a similiar search and wondering if somehow both are related. Have a Darby and Anthony Clark who went from Mayo (possibly near Ballina) with their father, possibly named Jeremiah Clark in 1823. Originally settled in Buffalo, NY but after their fathers death around 1851, migrated to Manitowoc county, WI. All active RC members. Micheal, Martin, Francis, Patrick, James, John, are common names of offspring.
