My graandfather, Michael Conlon, was born in Ireland in 1840 or 1842 (?). His father was William and his mother was Ann Mulroy. I know my grandfather came to U.S. around 1865 and settled in Wisconsin. I don't know if his parents emigrated or not, that is what I trying to find out now. My grandmother's name was Margaret Cooney and her parents came from County Mayo so perhaps that is where my grandfather came from also but I don't know for sure about that. I was always told that my grandfather came from Cork but I have since found out that that could have been the port from where he emigrated. I suppose there are lots of Conlons in Ireland but I would like to find out more about my grandfather before I leave this earth. Thanks for replying to my post. Maybe we can find some common ground.
Kathleen Conlon Sieber

Obit: Michael Conlon of Iowa (1944-2009)

Michael J. Conlon, son of Floyd and Edna (Fandel) Conlon, was born January 13, 1944 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. He attended St. Mary’s grade school and Emmetsburg Catholic High School, graduating in 1962. Following graduation Mickey attended St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota.

Mickey was employed for Boggess Construction for many years before going to work for the Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Department. He served as a dispatcher for twenty six years, retiring in 2008. Mickey loved working on the farm and continued this work until his illness. He was an avid E’Hawk fan and enjoyed watching NASCAR and golf on television. He loved being with his brother and sisters and their children.

Mickey was a devoted member of the St. Pat’s Association for thirty eight years, serving in many capacities of the board. He played a crucial role in the every day operation of the headquarters, planning and implementation of choosing a dignitary, and the organization of the annual banquet. Mickey will always be remembered for his leadership in preparing for the annual St. Pat’s Parade and seeing that Miss Shamrock and all of the Junior Pageant winners were safely taken to area parades and Des Moines. Each year, the St. Pat’s celebration took place with the help of many volunteers, which Mickey was always willing to credit, when in fact many of the details were seen to by Mickey. Mickey never knew a stranger and made friends wherever he went.

He received the Emmetsburg Rotary Club Business and Industry Award of Merit on May 6, 2008 for his service toward the betterment of Emmetsburg.

He was a member of Holy Family Parish in Emmetsburg and the Knights of Columbus Council 936 of Emmetsburg as well as the Knights of Columbus Bishop Heelan Assembly. Mickey was very active in his parish, serving as lector and training mass servers for many years.

Mickey died Sunday, March 1, 2009 at the Palo Alto County Hospital at the age of 65. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Bob Schumacher; and nephew, Billy Staiert.

He is survived by his brother and sisters, Pat and Denny Staiert of Carroll, IA, Jean Marie Schumacher of Whittemore, IA, Dan and Alice Conlon of New Hampton, IA and Mary Therese and Norm Kohlhaas of Livermore, IA; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and countless friends.

SERVICE
Holy Family Catholic Church
Emmetsburg, Iowa
Friday, March 6, 2009, 10:30 A.M.

INTERMENT
St. John’s Catholic Cemetery
Emmetsburg, Iowa
McPartland/Conlon

Hi Marcas, this may be relevant or not, I understand that the Anglicised version of McPartland is BARTLEY.
If this is so I have what may be relevant info:
Catherine Bartley b abt 1800 Ire (Sligo or Mayo) the Brit census records never give townlands parishes etc.
She married Patrick O'Hara b abt 1798 again Sligo/Mayo the family migrated to Bradford, Yorkshire abt 1832 and continued to raise family now 6 generations so there are several thousand O'Hara's in the family tree.
During the 1830's there were only 9 Irish families living in Bradford, all in the same (slum) area, mostly the womenfolk were involved in wool combing, spinning etc, the men as agricultural lab's, builders, or hawkers.
Common mames at the time were Madden, Conlon, Kilbride, Gallagher, McNulty, Sweeney, Murphy, Conroy. Later during the 1860's and on the Irish population increased dramatically, availablity of work, industrial revolution etc, other Names: McGuinn, Mullaney, Battle, Keogh, Fallon, there was lots of intermarriage between the families.

This is just a quick outline, as I said, not sure if its relevant to your research but if there is a link I will be glad to hear from you.
Best wishes Chris O'Hara, Bradford Yorks
This is a bit of a long shot since your post is from 2005... But, my gr-grandmother, Nellie, and her sister, Delia Conlon emigrated from Belfast to Boston around 1916 - they were both teenagers. Nellie stayed, became a nurse, got married, etc... I can't find ANY info on Bedelia or Delia. My thinking is that she may have returned to her mother (Mary McDonnell Conlon) in Belfast,Ireland.

My great great grandfather James Conlan (1826-1877)arrived in Sth Aust on the Chatham in 1852 together with his family. They embarked at Plymouth and originate from County Cavan in Ireland. Research indicates that the surname in Ireland may have been Condilon. Email me if you have any questions or answers. mark@manea.id.au

Conlon / Lennon - Pawtucket RI Connection

Hi Conlons of Pawtucket. My great grandparents were Elizabeth Conlon and Patrick Lennon of Latton Parish, County Monaghan. Elizabeth was Patrick's second wife, his first was Julia McMahon. He had children from both marriages and some emigrated to Pawtucket RI. My grandfather, James Lennon emigrated to NYC.

I believe many Lennon's and Conlon's and others from the Latton Parish settled in Pawtucket. I was wondering if any of the information above seemed familiar. If so, please email me.

Tom,

My great grandmother was an Elizabeth Conlon. Not the same one as yours, but she lived in Monaghan, Latton Parish specifically, in the Castleblayney area. She was the second wife to Patrick Lennon. She was baptized on 20 mar 1842 and married 15 jul 1879. Let me know if your Elizabeth Conlon was from this area in Monaghan. I have some records from the parish.

Nell

Well I reckon that makes you my second cousin (in a half cousin sort of way!)

Bernard is your great grandfather via Thomas and he is my great grandfather via Ann - a daughter of his first marriage.

I am just off to bed coz its 3am here in Liverpool so I'll just attach a file for you to read. I'm afraid I know next to nothing about Bernard's second marriage so I would love it if you could fill in the gaps.

I do have more stuff about our family in Scotland and New Zealand and will get that to you later.

If you want to mail me my address is irvinejim@hotmail.com

all the best

Jim
============================================================
The Conlon Family

My Conlon family come from Clooneen, a small townland near Cloone village. The name Clooneen itself was officially wiped out when Ireland was mapped in the late 1830’s by the Ordnance Survey. At that time the townland became part of the larger Cloone townland although the name Clooneen continues in common usage. Local historian Michael Whelan includes it as part of the adjoining townland of Bellakiltyfea although I believe, having now checked with Ballinamore library, that it has always been part of Cloone townland.

The main parish records for Cloone start in 1823 although there are also a few from 1820. There are, however, significant gaps, particularly in the years 1841 – 1844. Also, during the Famine years 1845 – 1850, baptisms seem to been sometimes omitted from the records. Neither are there many death records from the famine period unlike in the neighbouring parish of Aughavas. But at least, in general, townlands are given which is not the case for the Aughavas records.

I have also noted that the death records generally omit the age at death for all deaths prior to February 1845, whereas all deaths after that date have an age included.

Because of the lack of very early records and because death records do not include parents, and even modern death records do not include the maiden names of married women, there are many problems involved in ascertaining family ties.

------------------------------------------------------------
According to my late uncle, Bernie Canning, there were a lot of Conlons in and around Cloone before about 1800. During the uprising of 1798, however, many of them joined General Humbert and his French troops as they marched through the area. After his defeat at Ballinamuck, in County Longford, although the captured French troops were treated as prisoners of war, the Irish prisoners were mostly killed out of hand and few Conlons, or others, returned to Cloone.

Initial details about our Conlon family come from handed down stories. We are told that James Conlon from Clooneen married Honor Reynolds from Edenbaun. This probably happened around 1839 and there is a barely legible entry in the parish records recording a marriage between a Conlon (possibly James) and a Reynolds (first name unclear) on 27th Feb 1838. This, I feel, must be them. We can assume that both must have been born in the first twenty years of the 19th century. Since the Parish records only date only from 1823 their births are unlikely to be recorded.

James and Honor had at least five or six children. The Leitrim Heritage centre found for us the baptisms of Philip, on 10th Apr 1840, Mary, on 1st Aug 1841, Peter (actually Patrick) on 25th Mar 1844 and Thomas on 30th Mar 1852). There is also my great-grandfather Bernard/Bryan. Based on his stated age at death Bernard was probably born around 1844 but there is no trace of him in the baptism records and it seems unlikely that an exact date of birth will be found for him.

There is also another Thomas, baptised 10th Feb 1839 and, although his mother is given as Honor Quinn, I am convinced that this he is of our family and that the mother’s name was a mistake. There may also have been a child John, born c. 1843, of whom all we have is his date of death (see below).

There is a newspaper article in the Leitrim Advertiser on 17th Jun 1880 about a court case involving Thomas Conlon and his sister Mary of Clooneen and a dispute about some cows. In the article we are told that their father died around 1856 and their mother around 1876. There is no record in the parish registers of James’s death but the parish records show the death of a Mrs Conlon of Clooneen, aged 64, on 3rd Jun 1876. Again, giving the similarities, I am assuming that these are my family.

A date of death for James of 1856 would also would explain why he does not appear in Griffith’s Valuation.

There are, or were, Conlons around Cloone who may have been descended from Peter, Thomas or John or even from earlier members of the family. My mother remembers her mother saying, of a local Conlon that “she was a bit of a relative.” This was in reference to Annie Bohan, nee Conlon, of Annaghmaconway Townland. Annie was a bit older than my mother born, say 1910 – 1915 and her father’s name was Patrick. In the 1901 Census there was a Patrick Conlon, aged 30, in Annaghmaconway with his sister Catherine (32) and his mother Catherine (70) a widow.

Catherine senior may have been married to one of the Conlons from Clooneen, perhaps a brother of James. This would mean that Annie Bohan would have been a second cousin of my grandmother Anne Conlon – which would seem to fit with my grandmother’s story. It may also be relevant that both girls were called Anne!

The children of James Conlon and Honor Reynolds

Thomas Conlon (10th Feb 1839) As there is a later Thomas in the family it may be that this Thomas died and a later child was named after him: In the records there is the death of a Thomas on 16th Jun 1841. Alternatively, but less likely, one of the two Thomas names was a mistake for another name.

Philip Conlon (10th Apr 1840) went to Scotland . He married Mary Bohan on 14th Nov 1864 apparently in Dalkeith, Scotland. There were 3 children of the marriage James (1871), John (c. 1876) and Helen (c. 1879). Philip’s family remained thereafter in Scotland

For further information see “The Conlon Family of Scotland and New Zealand”.

Mary Conlon (1st Aug 1841) never married and, when her sister in law Bridget died in 1891, she looked after the children when her brother Bernard moved to Cavan (see below). The 1901 Census for Cloone shows Mary, (60 years old), unmarried, along with Anne (15 – should have been 18) and Mary (11). These are my grandmother and my great aunt. The 1911 Census shows them as aged 69, 24 and 19. In both of the censuses these are the only Conlons in the townland. The one-roomed house was of stone or brick with wood or thatch roof, two windows to the front and with two outbuildings, a cow house and a calf house.

John Conlon. I have no idea about this man. I have included him here because he died at Clooneen on 27th Mar 1876, aged 34. His birth date would thus have been around 1842 and he may have been of this family. I will look at his death certificate to see if further info can be obtained.

Bernard (Bryan) Conlon married Bridget Maguire (18) of Drumdiffer, Drumreilly at Drumreilly (Drumlea Church?) on 7th Jan 1878 (source Leitrim Genealogy Centre letter 17th Nov 1986). Witnesses were Peter Healey and Anne Mitchell. The Drumreilly Parish records only date from 1878 so we have little chance of Bridget’s date of birth or the marriage of her parents. (see later Maguires). My mother says that the Anne Mitchell who was a witness at this wedding may have been a relation. She remembers visiting an Anne Mitchell, living up beyond Greagh crossroads, in about 1972. This was a cousin of sorts but she doesn’t remember the family relationship. (but see John Conlon below)

Bridget had six children before dying in childbirth on 6th Feb 1891; her 7th child, the baby Bridget, dying the same day. Bernard later re-married (date as yet unknown) to Mary McArdle in Cavan and started another family with whom it seems he spent most of his time. His unmarried sister Mary looked after the children of his first marriage at Clooneen. Bernard died in Mohill workhouse aged 74, a slater, on 6/5/1918.

Patrick Conlon (25th Mar 1844). Apart from the record of his baptism I have nothing on this man. In a letter from Leitrim Heritage Centre dated 17th Nov 1986 this man’s name was given as Peter. On looking at the original register it is obviously Patrick!

Thomas Conlon (31st Mar 1852). All we have is the information from the newspaper articles that he was an itinerant shoemaker and also that he had been fined for fighting and drunkenness. He does not appear in the census nor in the parish records again. I think he died at some point between 1880 and 1890 when “The representatives of Thomas Conlon” were in charge of the farm. There is a death recorded in the Civil Registration of a Thomas (aged 50) in 1889. I need to look at this

Children of Philip Conlon and Mary Bohan

See ‘The Conlon Family of Scotland and New Zealand’

Children of Bernard Conlon and Bridget Maguire (1st marriage)

Bernard and Bridget had seven children.

Philip was baptised 20/10/1878. He married in America but I do not know his wife’s name. He had no children and, coming back to Ireland after his wife’s death, died at Clooneen about 1953.

Francis was baptised 27/9/1880. He was taken to the USA by someone (not known who but possibly a McGuire, one of his mother’s brothers). He died as a child (date unknown) just after his First Holy Communion.
UPDATE _NEW INFORMATION NOT YET ENTERED

Anne (my grandmother) was baptised 24/9/1882. She married John Canning of Aughavas on 5/2/1912 and died in Liverpool 8/2/1973.
Their children; Bridget Mary, Peter, Anne, Margaret, Bernard and Kathleen

Bernard (like his father!) is not seen in the Parish records but the Civil records show his birth as 14/2/1885. A brewery worker and miner he moved to Fife in Scotland where, I think, he married Isabella Smetton Pryde. I have no other dates for him.
Their children; Margaret, Bernard, Francis, Clare, Robert, Isabella, Mary, Peter,
Patricia and Vincent.

Elizabeth was baptised 5/12/1886. She married Michael Curran 26th September 1913 and died 12/1/1970. Michael may have been from Tooma as his son John Joseph still lives there. (CHECK WITH MARY AND JOHN JOE) In the 1901 Census the Curran family at Tooma is shown as Thomas Curran (57)(farmer), his wife Margaret aged 60 his son John (27) with his wife Bridget and Michael shown as 22 years of age. Michael died on 14/8/1955 with a given age of 82.
Their children; Margaret Anne, Mary Alice, Thomas Francis and John Joseph.

Mary Conlon was baptised 26/11/1888. She married Patrick Carroll from Portdrine, Co. Clare in about 28th November 1918. Paddy died 17/6/1963 and Mary died c. 1985 aged 98. They had no children.

Bernard Conlon and Mary McArdle (2nd marriage)

Bernard and Mary had five children. I have little information on these people. Most went to the USA although James stayed in Ireland.

James married Mary Anne Reilly. They had no children. James died in 2000 although I understand Mary is as yet alive and living at Knockateera, Cloverhill P. O., near Butler’s Bridge, Co. Cavan

Margaret married Dan Moran
Children; Margaret, Edmund, Daniel and Eileen

Thomas married Mildred (surname unknown)
Children; George, Doris and Maryann

Alice married Arthur McNeill 27/11/1924. He died 16/10/1971
Children; Alice 22/3/1926, Thomas 29/12/1928, Marion 26/6/1931, Bernadette
13/10/1935 and Anne 31/8/1939.

John married and had perhaps one child, perhaps none. He died 14/5/1954

Kathleen and Jean
I'm a little confused with your wxchanges and I can't decide who's grandfather did what, or when he did it.

Am I right in understanding that a Bernard Conlon went to the USA in 1920 from Ireland?

Then his son Bernard went from Armagh to Scotland?

The reason I am asking is that the Ellis Island site only gives one Bernard Conlon immigrating into the US in 1920 and he is Bernard Conlon of Cloone Leitrim.

Now this may be way off the mark but I understand you do not have much info on the Armagh connection - is it possible that this is the man you are researching? If so I have quite a lot of info about him.

I am trying to do research on my grandfather who was born in Ireland in 1908, his name is Thomas Conlon and his father was Bernard Conlon. Bernard was a plasterer. The birth certificate has County Cavan but the birthplace is handwritten as Keeney I believe but there is no such town that I can find. My wife and I are going to Ireland for our honeymoon and I'd like to do research there but don't know where to start.

My grandfather moved to NYC with at least 1 brother but I am not sure who else.

Hi Karen,

If you're referring to my post, I don't think it's the same Patrick - but I'll give you more details and see if it matches up.

Patrick J CONLON arrived in Australia with his wife Catherine nee LOWERY. One of his sons wrote a short autobiographical entry that mentioned his father: ' a native of KINVARA, County of Galway, Ireland and arrived in Sydney in the year 1834 as a private of the 50th Regiment which embarked in the ship "FAIRLEE".' He died in 1870 in Glebe.

They had a number of children, one of which was a Patrick CONLON (1838-1860) who died age 22 and doesn't appear to have married.

What time period was your Patrick CONLON alive? What city?

cheers,
matt

NSW Conlon burials

I enquired about CONLON burials from the old Petersham cemetery in NSW - I didn't find my ancestor but these two entries (probably on one headstone) were transferred to Rookwood. I can e-mail the pdf's to anyone interested, though all info is pasted here:

Name: Bridget CONLON
Service: 12 Oct 1867
Age: 40
Location: SEC*M2*13 LEW**121
REGISTER No. 61143

Name: Patrick CONLON
Service: 5 Oct 1877
Age: 24
Location: SEC*M2*13 LEW**121
REGISTER No. 61142

NSW BDM suggests that Patrick corresponds to:
1516/1877 CONLON PATRICK f:JOHN m:BRIDGET loc:SYDNEY

Given the common site, Bridget is probably:
332/1862 CONLON BRIDGET f:JOHN m:BRIDGET loc:SYDNEY

They may fit into my extended tree.

cheers
matt
