McConnell DNA Match for a descendant of James Connell b abt 1826 Glasgow

As a McConnell researcher with McConnell cousins in the Clan Donald DNA project, I recently began comparing Y chromosome DNA test results for Connell men with Y chromosome DNA test results for McConnell men. I found one Connell man listed in the database of the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF) and extracted his results from the database. He is an extremely close match for an R. C. McConnell who is already in the Clan Donald DNA project. R. C. McConnell has results for 28 markers on the project results tables, and he and the Connell descendant match on 27 of those markers. Because the names Connell and McConnell are considered variants of each other, this strongly suggests that the two men share a common ancestor who lived after the adoption of surnames. The connection could be very recent. Note: There are two men listed as R. C. McConnell in the project database; the Connell match is with the R. C. McConnell listed in the bottom table of the results table page for the project.

Because these men were tested through different organizations, the databases of those organizations won't be able to put them in touch with each other. So unless one of them has gone looking in the databases of other organizations as I did, they probably don't know about their connection. I would like to make sure that they find each other. If any researcher of the family of James Connell b abt 1826 in Glasgow Scotland reads this message, please contact me, and if anybody else out there thinks that they know a researcher of this family who may be unaware of the connection, please help if you can.

The following information about the family of James Connell from the SMGF database may help identify the family. He was born about 1826 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland, and was married to Janet Gellately. His son Alexander married Mary Ann Christina Warnock, and their son Thomas married Ruth Edna Mae Lloyd.

Because the Clan Donald DNA Project has its own website, it is able to post results for men tested on any set of Y chromosome DNA markers. Therefore the project can accept Connell men tested at SMGF and at all of the commercial companies. Having one's results in the project database makes it very easy to compare one's results with those of others in the large project and also has other advantages, so I recommend that any Connell man with Y DNA test results join the project. I'll say more about how to do this in another post, but anybody interested in joining now is welcome to contact me and I'll be happy to help.

Anybody curious about this project can learn more by going to the extremely informative project website at http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/DNAmain.htm.

Kirsten Saxe

Thomas Connell born circa 1795, County Cavan, Ireland --> Cavan Township, Durham County, Ontario, Canada circa 1850

My great grandfather John Connell had a
brother Thomas born c. 1850 in Cavan Twp.,
Durham Co., Ontario. Their father was also
Thomas Connell, born c. 1795, Co. Cavan,
Ireland. They immigrated c. 1840. John
Thomas also had brothers William (see *below),
Richard, Samuel, Charles James + atleast 1
sister Ann we think one other. We believe
Thomas went to New York (city? or state?)
had sons Walter Malcolm (both worked for NY
Central) and possibly as many as 2 daughters.
* William (born c.1819) married Frances Watt
c. 1850;they had sons William(1851-1941),
Robert(c1853-1897), Thomas(1855-1923), James
Young(1857-1947), son(1860-1860)+ daughters
Anne(c1853-?), Elizabeth(1864-1938) Frances
(c1865-1889). If any of those names mean
anything to you, let me know -- I have much
more info for you. Hope I may have been
some help! We also have many blanks which you
might be able to fill to our mutual
satisfaction!
other sons and 3 daughters
-1923

James Connell mentioned as having married Anne Williams, 1745, Charles Co, MD

John Williams, late of Charles County, planter, on April 10, 1709, made his will, in which he devised to his wife, Sarah Williams, 100 acrs of land called Frankum, bounded by the south side of Lawsons Marsh, during her natural life and after her death, to his son, John Williams. Said Sarah, after the making of the will, died, and said John Williams, the devisee, also died, a minor without issue, whereby the land fell to Anne Williams, daughter of the testator and sister of the whole blood to said John Williams, the devisee. Anne Williams, after the death of her brother and arriving to full age, married James Connell. Said James and Anne Connell, for 6000 pounds tobacco, by Charles County deed dated April 17, 1740, conveyed the land to John Dunbarr (Dunberr) of St. Mary's County, who delivered the deed to Mr. Samuel Hanson, Charles county clerk, to be recorded, but said Hanson died immediately after the delivery of said deed, whereby said deed failed to be recorded in the time limited by Act of Assembly for recording conveyances by which means said Dunbarr lost the effect of the purchase. Elizabeth Hanson, widow of said Samuel Hanson, agreed to pay said Dunbarr the purchase money aforesaid. Said Dunbarr, by deed dated January 29, 1745 confirmed to said Elizabeth all his right to the land aforesaid. Said Elizabeth Hanson, in 1745, at the first session of Assembly held that year, preferred her petition, praying that the deed aforesaid from James Connell and wife to John Dunbarr might be made in as full force as if it had been recorded in time. The Assembly enacted that said deed should be recorded in Charles County and was good in law as if it had been recorded in time. Now this deed, made March 17, 1745 (6) from said Elizabeth Hanson to John Stromatt of Charles County, planter, witnesses that said Elizabeth Hanson, for 6253 pounds tobacco and 9 pounds and for divers other good causes, sells to Stromatt all her right to the land above mentioned.

signed--Elizabeth (EH her mark) Hanson

Witnesses: George Dent, Walter Hanson.

Source: Charles County (MD) Land Record Book Z, No. 2

According to the 1903 census, they were living in Trenton, NJ at the time. They have one daugther that I know of, my great-grandmother, Julia Ryan Meskill (1st marriage) Parsons.

Sorry about the lack of info, but that's really all I have. Hopefully someone out there can give me some kind of info. Thanks in advance... Laura Parsons Ream

James, Mary, Johnson, and Sadie Connell Pittsburgh, PA ~1900

I am looking for information on James Connell b. Ireland either 1859 or 1860 d. Pittsburgh, PA July 5, 1933. He married Mary McShane around 1888.

But, I'm more specifically interested in 2 of James', but NOT Mary's children.

I found information on the 1900 census that leads me to believe that James was married to someone else in Ireland who most likely died before or during the immigration to the United States. Further, he may have had a child out of wedlock or was married to a third woman between his immigration in 1881 and his marriage to Mary in 1888.

It lists the family as James (head); Mary (wife) Thomas (son); Joseph (son); Johnson (son); and Sadie (daughter). Mary is listed as having birthed 5 children with 2 living. These would definitely be Thomas (my paternal grandfather) and Joseph. I am looking for information on Johnson b. Ireland c. December 1880 with both father and mother born in Ireland; and Sadie b. Pennsylvania c. Dec 1883 with father born in Ireland and mother born in England. His wife Mary (my great-grandmother) was born in England, BUT she did not immigrate until 1887.

I have not been able to find anything anywhere about either of these 2 mystery family members.

I believe that James was only married twice because the 1910 census has his status as "M2" which I assume means this was his second marriage.
The Clan Donald DNA Project and ways to join it

The Clan Donald DNA project is a large Y chromosome DNA project dedicated to helping men from Clan Donald male lines and their families learn more about those lines. Early in the clan's history, the line of the clan chiefs adopted the surname MacDonald. There are other male bloodlines in the clan; some of those bloodlines carry other surnames, and there are also many bloodlines using the name MacDonald or a variant that are not related to the clan chiefs through male line descent. Many men are eligible to join the Clan Donald DNA Project, including all men with surnames that are variants of the surname MacDonald. These variant surnames include McConnell and Connell, so men with these surnames may join the project, even if their line is not believed to have been part of Clan Donald.

Because the project is one of the older and more well-established DNA projects, it has grown very large, with 550 men now on the project tables. I would estimate that about 300 of those men carry MacDonald variant surnames, so Connell men have a pretty decent chance of finding genetic matches within the project. As a McConnell researcher, I have paid special attention to the McConnells within the project, and from looking at the project results tables and communicating with some of the McConnell families involved, I have come to the conclusion that slightly more than half of the McConnell men in the project have genetic matches from outside their known family tree within the project, with an additional quarter of McConnell men having matches with known cousins within the project.

Those looking for genetic cousins outside the project have the option of recruiting suspected cousins for testing. Finding out whether suspected cousins are or are not related in the male line is one of the most helpful applications of genetic genealogy, and can help genealogists better focus their paper trail research.

Because the project is so well-established, most men with MacDonald variant surnames and Y chromosome test results must be in the project, but there are also men with MacDonald variant surnames who are not in the project, but may be found in other databases. Searching those databases increases the chance of finding a match.

The rapid growth of the project and increased use of DNA testing services means that many men who don't have promising genetic matches within the databases now probably will have such matches within the next couple of years.

There are several ways to begin the process of joining the Clan Donald DNA Project. The project was set up by Clan Donald USA through Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), and if you join through the Join page at the project website, you will be tested through FTDNA and benefit from a group rate discount. This is definitely the simplest way to join the project and does have some benefits aside from the group rate. Because the sets of DNA markers tested by different testing organizations overlap, but are not identical, it is beneficial to be tested on the same sets of markers as most others in the project, because then more of your results will be comparable with the results of others in the project. It is also helpful to be in the FTDNA database, which is used to help put families with matching results in touch with each other. While some companies do allow people who aren't customers to search their database, FTDNA isn't one of them, so that is an important advantage. Another important advantage of testing with FTDNA is the availability of more thorough testing options. Some men in the project find that they have very large numbers of genetic cousins, and further testing can help them figure out which of those genetic cousins are most closely related to them. The 37 marker test at FTDNA includes some markers that are extremely useful for distinguishing closely related family lines and aren't readily available elsewhere.

Another way to join the project is to start with the Genographic Project associated with the National Geographic Society. The purpose of this project is to study early human migrations. The testing is done through FTDNA, and the number of markers tested is relatively small; only 12 markers are tested. This means that the test results won't be specific enough to confidently identify closely related cousins, but if interesting matches are found, it's possible to order further testing to get a better idea of the closeness of the relationship. The fee paid is equal or very nearly equal to the price for testing directly through FTDNA, but includes a donation to the Genographic Project, helping to fund testing of individuals from all over the world whose ethnic groups would otherwise not be well represented in the Genographic Project. Members of the project can learn more about the migratory history of their line on the project website; I've also heard something about a video for Genographic Project members, but I'm not clear as to whether that is currently available to new members. If you are initially tested through this project and decide later to upgrade your results, you will end up paying more than you would have paid by ordering a more detailed test through FTDNA, assuming that the price structure at FTDNA when you upgrade is the same as it is now. An option for men who are interested in more detailed testing and the Genographic Project is to test through FTDNA for more than 12 markers. Once results come back, it is possible to join the Genographic Project for just $15.

Because Clan Donald USA has its own website for the project, project webmaster Doug McDonald has been able to customize the project website to display results for men tested at different labs. Most of the other testing organizations usa a single lab, Sorenson Genomics. Sorenson Genomics does all of the testing for the nonprofit Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation and has done most of the testing for DNA Heritage, Relative Genetics, and DNA Ancestry (Ancestry.com). The different organizations count the markers differently, but the “37” marker tests performed for SMGF participants, the 43 marker tests performed by DNA Heritage and Relative Genetics, and the “46” marker tests performed by DNA Ancestry are essentially the same, and they're all roughly equivalent to the 37 marker tests at FTDNA in their power to resolve different branches within a family tree. Men tested at these and other organizations are welcome to join the project.

By joining the project, these men would be helping themselves and other project members. One of the most obvious benefits would be having their results posted on the project results tables, making it easy for these men and their matches to find each other. By creating an entry for their test results in the database called Ysearch at www.ysearch.org and notifying one of the project administrators of their Ysearch ID code, they can get a link to their Ysearch entry placed on the project tables, enabling matches who find them on the tables to easily navigate to their Ysearch entry and contact them through Ysearch. Use of Ysearch is recommended for all men with Y test results, but it is especially important for men who have tested outside FTDNA. A very large number of men with McDonald variant surnames has been tested at FTDNA through the Clan Donald project and some others have been tested elsewhere, and they may not all know about the databases for men tested at other organizations. Most will at least be aware of the existence of Ysearch and will know about the project tables. There are some differences in how different organizations report test results, and this can cause some confusion for people entering their data on Ysearch, but I have been through this process myself and am willing and able to answer questions and to help anyone in need of assistance. See notes at the bottom of this message for more on this subject.

Another lesser-known benefit of joining the project is having one's results posted to something called a relationship tree, or cladogram. The project is very fortunate to have Doug, a professor of chemistry at the University of Illinois, as a co-administrator. His research interests and skills overlap with genetic genealogy, and the relationship trees that he has been able to develop are very interesting and helpful. These trees are constructed based on the assumption that a minimal number of mutations has occurred among the lines of the men in the project, and show the most likely relationships between them based on recent data. In most cases, they should give a better idea of the relatedness of the men on the tables than one on one comparisons alone. Doug has developed trees for men with results for FTDNA's sets of 25, 37, and 67 markers. Because the set of markers used by Sorenson Genomics includes all of the markers in the 25 marker set used by FTDNA, men with results for all of the Sorenson markers who join the project will be able to see where they fall on the 25 marker tree for their haplogroup, if there is one. The vast majority of men testing will be in one of the haplogroups (I1a, I1c, R1a, and R1b) for which Doug has developed trees and would be placed on one of them.

To join the Clan Donald DNA Project with test results from outside FTDNA, you will need to contact one of the project administrators. They will need your permission, your test results, and contact information. How test results are shared with the administrators will vary depending on who did your tests and their format for reporting them. Please try to create a Ysearch ID for yourself before contacting them so that they can include that ID on the tables when they first post your results instead of having to come back later. If you are uncertain about the values for any markers, you can leave those markers out, and remember that you can contact me for assistance.

You can find contact information for the project administrators at the bottom of the following page on the Clan Donald DNA project website: http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/DNAjoin.htm.

Kirsten Saxe, McConnell researcher

Creating a Ysearch entry with results from outside FTDNA can be tricky for 2 reasons. Different testing organizations report results for the same man in different ways. For some markers, the numerical values reported will be different, and it's necessary to add or subtract a fixed amount to convert results from one organization to the format used by another. The names used for some markers may also be somewhat different. For instance, the marker FTDNA calls GATAH4 is called GATA H4.1 in the SMGF database, and this is also one of the markers that usually needs to be converted from the format of one lab to the format of another.
The search page for the SMGF Y chromosome database is very handy for converting results from one lab into the format of another lab. If the lab where you were tested is listed as an option under lab standards on the search page, choose that lab and enter results for as many of your markers as you can find on the search page. When you are done, go back and change the lab standard to FTDNA. Then your results will be converted to FTDNA's format. Then most of the results are ready to enter into Ysearch, but leave out DYS 452 and DYS 463 because there has been some confusion about the Ysearch standards for those markers.
The orders for display of SMGF results using the FTDNA lab standard and for entry into Ysearch are similar, but the ysearch entry form contains many additional markers that one must skip over when entering SMGF results. This is not extremely difficult, but requires some care.
If you are unsure of what value to enter for a particular marker when you first create your ysearch entry, just leave it blank. Then you will at least be able to tell the project administrators your Ysearch ID when you contact them. This should allow them to include your Ysearch ID on the project tables when they first enter your data, making their job just a little bit easier.

I'm looking for information on Patrick and Mary Connell born 1836 and 1840, respectively, in Ireland. It's possible that Mary's maiden name was Sullivan but I'm not 100% sure. They had a son Michael born in Ireland in 1866 and according to the information I have must have come to America, specifically Connecticut, shortly there after because their next child Nellie was born in 1867 in CT. Their daughter Mary (1870-1930, CT) was my grandfather's grandmother.

The Connell family lived in South Milford, North Riding, and Heslington (nr York). I am looking for more information into the origins of the family as my grandmother had always maintained we had several Irish ancestors - Leary (found), Doyle (not found) and Connell. Sarah Connell b. c. 1822 in heslington, was my grandmother's grandmother - she married a Richard Vary from Huntington, nr York, but her family was definately from Yorkshire, at least back into the 18th century. However, according to the Oxford dictionary of names, Connell is an Irish name, so I feel it is still possible that it was originally Irish. Does anyone have any further knowledge of the Connell family before Mark Connell (Sarah's grandfather)?

Hi,
My name is Ros and I am extremely new to Genalogy and lists. I am a Connell by marriage not by birth.
In the 70's my SIL went to Ireland and started this family tree. Therefore not sure of the accuracy.
It commences with Abraham of Castle Lyons - died 1774 - m Anne Pratt 1759 and brother Jerimiah d 1811 - Amelia Lilton - 1759. I have the line for Jerimiah (hubbies side) but nothing for Abraham.
Abraham had 8 kids, I am led to believe, the were:
John, James, William, Mary, Robert, Abraham, Jerimiah and Catherine.
Any assistance would be fantastic.

ROS
am trying to trace my mother's maternal line and would love to hear from anyone who has knowledge of Catherine (or Kate) Connell. She was probably born around 1860 in Australia but her parents, I think , were Irish. Some of her siblings were Mariah(or Myriah), Bridget and William. There may have been others. Her mother was Ellen MacNamara, who died in childbirth, having her 6th child. The husband later remarried, so I was told.
The family lived in Victoria, possibly up near Ballarat. Catherine Connell married Robert James Couper some time in the latter part of the 1800's and had many children, a number of whom died when young. Some of the children were Robert William Couper, Ella Couper, Marion Couper, Victor Couper, Vera Couper, George Couper, Doris Couper and my own grandmother, Gracia Mary Couper, who later married John Leon La Walla.
Please contact me if you think you have any link at all to the family.

John Kennedy b. 1830 with sponsors John Conners and Margaret Walsh; probably married Mary Connell of Kilclooney; I believe he was the John Kennedy who was 64
at the time of the 1901 census. He was living with his wife Mary, who was 60, his son James who was 33, and his daughter Mary Ann who was 23.

John and Mary, besides being the parents of James and Mary Ann, also had Bridget born in 1870 and JOhn born in 1872.

At the time of the 1911 census, Mary was 74, still in the same house as her son James, who had married Katie (probably Hanley). They had a son John. Katie would have been born in Cullinagh, Kildorrery,in 1878 to John Hanley and Hanora Dwyer of Cullenagh.James and Katie were married in 1909 with witnesses Patrick McDonald of Ballyshonack and Lizzie Hanley of Ballynoulty, Kildorrery.

James and Katie had John c1909, Mary c1911 (who probably married John Keane), and Patrick.

Is anyone else researching this family?
I am looking for more information regarding my husband's grandmother. Her maiden name was Mary Elizabeth Connell, born in Pennsylvania approx. 1865, died in New York (Long Island) approx. 1945-1946. She married Charles Cumiskey approx. 1887. Her parents were both from Ireland (?County Cork)...possibly a Patrick and Margaret Connell. She possibly had a sister Anne. I found these names in the 1870 census and they might be the correct family but I wouldn't bet my life on it!! Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have stalled out on the Connells at Mary Elizabeth.

Ann Cumiskey
