My ggg granfather was Hugh Coulter b. abt 1813 d.? arrived in Ontario between 1845-47. His wife's name was Mary Love I believe. His first two children were Christina b. 1838, and second child William b. 1845 both born in Ireland. The remaining children were born in Durham Co., Ontario, Canada.
My gg grandfather was John Wesley Coulter.

I'm looking for any information in regard to his (Hugh's) parents, and origin in Ireland.

Thank you in advance.

Chuck

Coulter family in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, UK in 1881

The Coulter family are listed in Chesterfield, Derbyshire in 1881 in the census as Hugh Coulter, wife Mary, children William, Jessie, Fred, Hugh, Polly, George. I have managed to trace both parents and all of the children to where they eventually died in Australia (except for Hugh, who died in the Somme, France in 1916). The only one I haven't been able to trace is William. There are a lot of William Coulter listings. I think he was born around Dec 1858 - he was listed as age 22 at the time of the Census. His birthplace was either Swinton or Kilnhurst in Yorkshire, as both places show up as the birthplace in earlier census. I believe that Mary (nee Laing) was Hugh Coulter's second wife. I think his first wife was Isabella, and he had a number of children with her, most of whom died in infancy, before dying herself. I have this based on a piece of paper that had been written out with the names of all Hugh Coulter's children by one of his grandsons. One of the children of the first marriage had a middle name of Inkerman, so that might have been a family name on either side of the family.

I don't know whether the William of this family ever made it to Australia (or New Zealand, where some of the family lived for a while). He may have died before the family left for Australia, or he may have continued to live on in the UK. Would appreciate anyone that thinkgs they might have come across this William somewhere. He was listed as a Musician in the 1881 Census, and his father was running a hotel, although he was a potter by trade. A Laura Slack was a friend of the family in 1881, she was a child then, and remained in England.

Yes - john COULTER did pass away in Washington, Mason Co, KY on July 7, 1789. I found a large commemorative marker with all the names of those who served in the Revolutionary War in the cemetary with his name on it, and the local records say he was the first white mae buried in the cemetery. But I walked the grounds and could not find any headstone or grave marker with his name on it. If you have any info on this family, please feel free to email me at jcoulter@umich.edu. Thanks! Jonathan

Shirley,
I have John Colter's story in my Coulter notebook. I don't see any relationship to my husband's ggrandfather, Andrew Coulter, but the story of John Colter is so amazing that I have saved it.
Andrew Coulter emigrated from Fermanagh, NI to the Port of Philadelphia, 1847 on the Ship Swatara and settled in Upper Merion Township, Merion County, PA
I will be happy to send you the info I have on this family if you would be interested. I have the descent from Andrew to my husband and beyond. I am working on the Fermanagh info that I have to discover who were the parents, siblings, etc. of Andrew.
Joan Schaller Yeckel
St. Louis, MO

I think the John Coulter you are speaking of died about 1790 (will have to check that) From what I recall, he is buried in Washington Cemetery in Mason Co., KY, was in the military and contracted Smallpox or some such disease. Abigail was in PA.with some of the children, but some of their children did move to Ohio. I think one was a doctor. Shirley

I have tons of old Colter genealogy. I am a direct descendant of John Colter of Lewis & Clark. I have researched for 40+ years in vain for my JC’s parentage. I have a lot on PA family, some of whom went to NC, SC and Georgia and a few to KY. I have ruled out my John from that line (Richard, etc.). I have a fellow named John in Tennessee d. @ 1806/10, no son named John but, my JC was gone to the Pacific and not around at that time. I have also gone through the James and John Coulter of Augusta County, and there is a possibility in John & Abigail line but not from their son Joseph. (I have ruled Joseph out as his son John lived until @ 1840 and no children.

Now you all have me interested in the Delaware line of Coulters. I have also read about Hugh and Macijah as shippers of tobacco. I think Hugh died and had an estate in Glasgow.

Got any ideas? I will be glad to share.

Does anyone have a Bartlett Coalter and his wife Maria Coalter that lived in Gasconade, Missouri in 1850 in their family tree? I'm thinking maybe "Coalter" is really "Coulter."

I found a Bartlett and Maria Coalter living in the above name location. They shared a home with Henry (1820), Ruth (Harlan) and Mary (daughter) Lucas.

I'm wondering if Maria Coalter is Maria Lucas - a name mentioned on a baptismal record. If so, she is somehow related to the Lucas family I am researching.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Emma Riley Sutton

They settled in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County PA and in 1856 moved to St. Clair County, IL then to St. Louis County, MO in 1860's.
James Coulter, Melancthon, Ontario-news article December 14, 1905

Orangeville Banner
Thursday, December 14, 1905

A property sold; a higherpriced property bought; a ruing of the latter bargain; an unsuccessful attempt to withdraw from the deal; a brooding over the matter to the point of insanity. This seems the only explanation available for the motives that actuated the principal in the awful crime committed at Shrigley at noon Thursday of last week.

The principal was Melancthon farmer James Coulter, about 56 years of age. His victims were his wife Mary, about 45, his daughter Ida, aged 14 or 15 and his son Willie, aged 11 or 12.

Coulter had a load of oats ready to take to Melancthon Station. He had told his neighbours he was going to market his oats, had hitched up his team and was seen to drive down the lane as far as his house, stop, and then turn the wagon around again and drive back to the barn.

George Kitching and Leonard Ostrander, who were loading wood at the opposite side of the road from the Coulter farm, saw smoke issuing from an upstairs window as though the place was on fire. Hurrying to the house to give the alarm of fire, and making their way in at the kitchen door, their surprise and horror at the sight that met their gaze can easily be imagined. Stretched out on the floor were three members pf the family — the husband, wife and daughter — the man and woman quite dead and the daughter at practically her last gasp, unconscious.

Upstairs, clothing and a feather tick on a bed were discovered to be on fire and the blaze was quickly extinguished. Further investigation led to the discovery of the boy in the barn, alive but unconscious, and he died the same evening without regaining consciousness.

Having bludgeoned his wife and children with an axe, the husband had taken his own life with his 32-calibre revolver.

An inquest in Shelburne Friday led to the coroner’s jury concluding: “We believe the said James Coulter was temporarily insane when he committed the several deeds of violence mentioned.”
Thank you so much for the information. I will contact Janis, hopefully she can help me. I have not been able to find any information on my great grandmother Lucinda(Coulter) Frost,(wife of Isaiah Frost Jr.) other than Jesse Coulter living next to them in Fayette Co. PA. in the 1850 census. According to the census Jesse would have been born in 1784. Janet

I am Jack Coulter and as far as I know the first Coulter to appear in South Jersey was William from a family in Lewes Deleware. William was born in 1787 and died in 1854. Right now that is all I know but a cousin has done a lot of research and is about to publish her work. She may be able to help you. Her name is Janis Barry and her address is 27 Chestnut Drive, Woodstown, NJ 08098
