Looking for information on this Court family. John and Mary Ann Court had three children...Frederick, John and Emily. Mary Ann must of died between 1871 and 1881 and we think she was born in Mitcham, surrey. John was born about 1815 and was a bricklayer. We think the children were born in St Andrews. Frederick born about 1849, John born about 1855 and Emily born about 1858.
If anyone knows anything about this family, email me on bkbowler@bigpond.com

Thanks and have a nice day.
Kerry
Australia

Hi John,

Hope you enjoyed your holiday!

I've been doing some research on my own. The National Archives web site has provided additional information pertaining to William Court (ie. land, mortgage and estate records). This gentleman is at the right place and time of my 2nd great grandfather's (George Court) birth.

Throughout the census years (1841-1911) it states place of birth as Drayton, Warwickshire, with the exception of one year stating S-O-A.

Please feel free to contact me directly at: gfaibish@rogers.com

Regards,
Gail

One last gasp on this thread

George Andrew Court, illegitimate son of Sarah Court, baptised on 20 December 1835. The mother was Sarah Court, and this ties up with the story that the daughter of Sarah Court (the daughter of Thomas and Ann Court of Shakespeare's house) had an illegitimate offspring by one of the earliest visitors to the Birthplace when it started as a tourist trap.

Nicholas Fogg's book on Stratford says:

"Mrs. Hornby (who was the tenant of the 'Swan and Maidenhead', as the Birthplace was then known, and AnnCourt great rival in the initial stages of the tourist trade) invective must have gained pungency when her rival's daughter was impregnated by George Skinner, the chaise driver at the 'White Lion'. He absconded but, like a good Stratfordian, was induced to return by the hope of living at the Birthplace after making a decent woman of Miss Court"

No record found of George Skinner marrying Sarah Court, at least in Stratford.
I had a very quick reply from a Stratford-Court expert so I think I can complete this before I potter off.

We can find no proveable links to any family but there are a number of circumstantial links to the family of William Ashby Court and his descendants. They farmed in both Drayton and Binton. The Courts farmed on several farms including Lower Binton Farm and Barton Farm. Lower Binton Farm was auctioned off as William Court was 'under distress' (financially embarassed, skint, etc.) in 1822.

I have indications that there are or have been about 4 other people all looking at this particular nexus of Courts.
Hi John,
I'm afraid the only information I have is that George was born in Drayton and his father is William (providing this information was correct on George's marriage reg). I have made several attempts to locate them in the 1841 Census without any luck. Have even searched under variants of the surname.

There is a William and Sarah in the 1851 S-O-A census. Now if George followed the traditional naming patterns, I don't see a connection with the above family. George is listed in the 1851 Census in Harborne, Staffordshire (with his future in-laws)

Would the S-O-A baptism records be transcribed.

Gail

Hi Gail,
Have you any data (name and dates of wife, children, name of farm) as the name of William is probably one of the most popular given names in the area. I even have a record of a William known as George in the Drayton area.

John C

My 3rd great grandfather, George Court was born in the Hamlet of Drayton, just outside of S-O-A circa 1830. He lists his father as William Court, farmer on his marriage registration. William was located in the 1830 Warwickshire Directory as living in Drayton.

This is the end of my research.
If anyone has come across this family, I would welcome your input.

Thank you.
Gail

Not my family but if you can help us out with anyones name and other details of the 1930s or before then we may be able to help you out. Angel can be a man's or woman's name and although it is rare in England is more usually an Italian name. In, I believe it was, the USA 1930s census there was an Angel Court but it was a girl living down in Texas. She was born in Louisiana but the remainder of the family was from Italy. More frustrating for genealogists sometimes names used within the family were sometimes not the names that appeared on their birth certificate. On certificates: is there any chance of getting your grandpa's birth certificate? Your grandpa's parents names should appear on there and maybe where he was living at the time?

The courts in Canada and California

Together with a relative in California we are researching the branch of the family (Albert and Marian plus children)that came to Canada in 1892 nad thence to California in 1907.
From San Francisco Albert moved to Livingston Ca.and was a noted builder in that area building amongst other things the Court Theater.
Any information about this branch of my family would be welcome.
Thank you John Court.. you sent me this years ago, I saved it, and have figured it out! I am 99.99% POSITIVE this is my earlier family!

I think that this is Alfred's (Shorty) earlier family. They appear to have had money, at least while the Father in law was alive, as they had a house servant.

57 Prospect Row, Redditch 1851
Age Born about Birth Place Occupation
John Court 29 1823 Redditch Fish hook maker
Jane Court 24 1828 Bromsgrove Fish hook bender
John William Court 7 1844 Redditch Scholar
Anna Maria Court 5 1846 Redditch Scholar
Emma Court 2 1849
Ellen Court 1 Mo 1851
Joseph Manley Butcher & Father in Law
Also had a house servant

53 Ipsley Street, Redditch 1861

Age Born about Birth Place Occupation
John Court 38 1823 Redditch Fish hook maker
Jane Court 33 1828 Bromsgrove Fish hook bender
Emma Court 12 1849 Redditch Fish hook bender
Ellen Court 10 1851 Redditch Scholar
Selina Court 7 1854 Redditch Scholar
Harriet Court 9 Mo 1860 Redditch

Living at 137 George Street, Redditch 1871

Age Born about Birth Place Occupation
John Court 48 1823 Redditch Fish hook maker
Jane Court 43 1828 Bromsgrove Fish hook bender
Selina Court 17 1854 Redditch Needle Maker?
Alfred Court 8 1863 Redditch Scholar*****
Frank Court 6 1865 Redditch Scholar
William Court 1 1870 Redditch

MY GG Grandfather is Alfred*****, born 1863. He married an Emma (still do not have info on her yet), and had a son named William (This is MY G GF, JOHN WILLIAM I have mentioned in previous posts) I do not know (yet) if Alfred & Emma had other children (want to find them!) but I know John William was called Willie, and he married a Winifred Gallagher.

1910 Federal US Census, Brooklyn NY:

Alfred Court, age 48 (GG GF)
Emma Court, age 48 (GG GM)
William Court, age 22 (G GF)
Winifred Court, age 19 (G GM)
William Court, age 1 1/2 (Gt Uncle)

The above mentioned Little William is my Grandfathers oldest Brother =)

If anyone finds any of these matches, please message me!

Valerie Court

Whoops, sorry Valerie I just nodded off there for a couple of seconds. Too much time at the National Archives, British Library, etc..
I assume you are refering to the family who spanned three censuses. I have no more on them at the moment but I will email the Courts that I have with a Redditch connection.
At a guess he is the same John Court as the one in this family:
John Court 45
Hannah Court aged 50
Joseph Court 20
John Court 15
Mary Court 15
Henry Court 10
Harriett Court 9
Living in Ipsley Street, Redditch in the 1841 census. John and family lived in Ipsley Street in a later census and there is still an Ipsley Street in Redditch.
I have noticed that there is a Joseph Court born c1820 in Redditch on GenesReunited. Let me know if you do not have a GenesReunited account.
Hi John (and John) - great names by the way :-)

Just a little correction to John's post (unless its a typo and should read 10 miles). Kings Norton is nowhere near 100 miles from Warwick. Until 1912 Kings Norton (as a district) was massive and stretched from North Worcestershire to the centre of Birmingham. Even at it farthest point (the middle of Birmingham) it is only 34 miles away from Warwick - more likely 20 miles from what is now Kings Norton to the middle or Warwick - there are probably places in the warwick district even closer than that.
Minor point - thought it worth mentioning just in case the distance was putting you off pursuing records.
PS. I live in between them in Redditch

John Court (another one)

I have two contacts with a direct interest with John Markham & Gilderoy Court and one with a slightly more peripheral interest.

If you know of Andrea's current email address please get in touch with me.

-----Original Message-----
From: Andrea Court < acourt@eng.uct.ac.za
To: INDIA-L@rootsweb.com < INDIA-L@rootsweb.com
Date: 17 November 1999 14:08
Subject: Court and Money anyone?

Hi, my name is Andrea Court, I am trying to find records/information on my ancestors who were in India, I have the following information, can anyone help or does anyone have any suggestions as to where I could find further information please?

My Great Grandfather was born in Meerut in India on 10 November 1856, (2nd child of 10 or 11 children - Eliza, John Markham, Alfred Fredrick, Oakley Hampton, William Money, Kate, Norman, Ashley, Chambers and Stanley). Their father, a John Court was in the army/war office in India and their mother was a Catherine Money b. around 1838 (I think in India), daughter of a David Money (who I would like info on, I believe he must have been with the war office or in the army). Catherine Money and John Court were married on 23 May 1853 in Jullundur, India.

I have little or no information on either of their parents and would very much like to find out what I can. David Money must have been in India, presumably in the army, as Catherine was only 15 when she married and it is highly unlikely she would have been their on her own.

Can anyone help me???

Thanks

From: "Kevin Asplin" < Kevin.Asplin@tesco.net
Subject: Re: Court and Money anyone?
Date: Wed, 17 Nov 1999 17:21:43 -0000

Andrea,

Yes, I think I can. I have listed a John Court, 1/60th Rifles, Colour Sergeant No. 2019. The 1/60th were in Jullunder in 1855 and Meerut in 1857 when the Indian Mutiny erupted so that fits your dates loosely as well. His medals are catalogued as being in the collection held by the South African War Museum. It is also noted that ". . . his three sons served, two receiving the Cape of Good Hope General Service Medal, one of whom received the Q.S.A. and K.S.A., 1914 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal. The third son got a Q.S.A. / K.S.A., plus a M.C. and WWI medals.

On the Cape of Good Hope Roll I find a Sergeant-Major J.M. Court of the Cape Mounted Rifles gaining a medal with clasp Bastutoland; and a Corporal O.H. Court of the Cape Mounted Rifles getting the medal with clasp Bechuanaland.

I strongly suspect these are some of your Courts. Hope this is of some help.

Irv Mortenson

From: Andrea Court < acourt@eng.uct.ac.za
Subject: Mutiny in India: Court and Money
Date: Thu, 18 Nov 1999 10:07:47 +0200

Hi Irv and Kevin and all who responded,

Wow, I cannot believe that you have all that information and yes, I believe my grandmother (youngest daughter of John Markham Court, CMR's) gave a number of medals to the war museum. Medals which were her brothers' Giuldroy Frederick Court who was in the Natal Police for over 20 years (we have the miniatures of his medals, the others are in the War Museum in Durban) also, her brother Jack Court was in the CMR's and I believe all her brothers were in the army. Also, her uncles', Oakely Hampton Court and Alfred Frederick Court (amongst many). John Markham Court (my great grandfather had a brother William Money Court who was in the army, I don't particularly know where though he died quite young, about 33). We still have my great grandfathers medals (John Markham Court), although the ribbons are in poor repair.

I am however interested to see that my great great grandfather John Court may have had a brother in the army in India by the name of William Court. It is likely that it was his brother, as one of John Courts sons was also named William, born around 1866 I seem to recall seeing this somewhere.

Just a titbit of information, which I have a copy of a newspaper report on, my great grandfather John Markham Court was also awarded a VC for the Battle of Drybosch, but he refused it, owing to the fact that some of fellow soldiers who were with him in that particular skirmish were not also awarded one. This medal was then taken "for the good of the battalion" by a Hans Garret Moore, who did not actually belong to the same battalion at all. John Markham Court was born shortly before the mutiny in India, and his older sister, Eliza, although very young at the time, told of recalling being out with their Aya (spelling?) when some soldiers came running up to them and told the Aya to get back to the house, which saved their lives, she also recalls her mother trying to assist a dying soldier at the gate of their residence, this being the day the mutiny broke out.

I will try to see what I can find on the William Court which Kevin talks of, as it is this distance in history, which is vague in our records. Both maternally and paternally from my grandmothers direct lineage.

Thanks for all the help.
Andrea

I have confirmed that the parents of Elizabeth (May/Mai) Court/Kurth were Jean/John May/Mai and Margarita Relles. Margarita died before Jean/John immigrated America, with his three daughters, settling in Ballville Township, Sandusky County, Ohio. Elizabeth's sister Mary married August Malkmus and had a large family in Sandusky County and her sister Anna married John Weyler who was born in England and they removed to California. All three May/Mai daughters were born in Weiswampach, Clervaux, Luxembourg. The widower Jean/John May/Mai married a second time after moving to Ohio to Mary (?) between 1850 and 1860.

I have carried out searches for Franz Kurtz and variations using soundex and there are quite a few. One of the more interesting ones was a Franz Kurtz born in Darmmstad with a son Frank and daughter Augusta (there were a number of other siblings).

The Cherokee for Evening Star may assist you in your search but there again she may have opted for an European name.

That's about all I can think of at the moment except for posting on the Kurtz message board.

BOL & repost on this board should you require more assistance or have an update.

As you probably already know the only Frank A Court in the USA census listing was born in New York about 1876 but the other information gives us the possibility that he was something like Franz Augustas Kurt or Kurtz.

The Cherokee connection might help although I found no Cherokee Courts in the Indian census listings even using the soundex search. This may mean that Evening Star was not part of the Indian nation when she wed. As I understand the Cherokee nation its stronghold area is on the east coast, Carolina, but they did move into Texas as farmers.

I will keep a look out for any clues or likely candidates

All I have is a handwritten paper from my cousin dated 1990. It lists:
Frank August COURTS married to Evening Star. She is said to be 100% Cherokee. Frank is said to be German and his name may have been originally spelled with a "k" and "z". Their daughter is Maude Merle COURTS. I have been to her grave and know her birth date (1 OCT 1877) and death date (2 NOV 1960) to be correct.

In my research:
I have seen her name spelled Maud, Maude, COURT and COURTS. Maude maried John Richard S. LAMB (which is my maiden name and main interest)in TX 23 JUL 1894. Census records show Evening Star and Maude born in TX. Frank is listed as born in Texas and Georgia.

Thanks for any help finding Frank!
Christy

No Frank Augustus Court in my line. Could you let us have the daughter and the wife's name so that it can be cross checked.

No real way of finding all the spellings and variations of Court. UK variations are: Court, Courte, Courts, Cort, Cawt, Cawte, MacCourt, McCourt. My favourite reference to the name is in a Court Roll where the official notes that the woman pronounces her name as Court but spells it Cowerd.

In the remainder of the Europe I have seen: Van Court, Von Court, La Court, Le Court, De La Court, Corti, Corte, Du Court, Kort, Kurt, Kurtz, etc.. So you could try a soundex search for Court but it really is a matter of lateral thinking. Also try sounding the name out using different accents. If you know some of the older more rural accents you will find out how Cowerd could be pronounced Cooert to get something approximating Court.

Also there have been a few programs on the BBC radio of USA immigration Officers americanising European names with "interesting" results. I get post addressed to mr. Cart, Coast, Caught, etc..

You also have a problem with Frank. Was he a Frank or a Francis and I have seen census returns where the spelling Francis or Frances seemed to have no bearing on the sex of the person.

As a brief aside the slave owning John Court from down Texas way, if not from Texas, was originally a dutch Van Court who fought against those nice Redcoats. Probably got a bit upset about being kicked out of New Amsterdam but he did get some land grants for his services against Sir John Courte and his son who were from the Montgomery County, Maryland area.

I am researching the ancestors of Matilda Mary (Court) Fleck. Matilda was a daughter of John and Elizabeth (May/Mae) Court. I have found where Elizabeth May, was a native of Weiswampach, Luxembourg and came with her parents from Germany in her girlhood days. I believe that Elizabeth's parents were John and Mary May of Ballville Township, Sandusky, Ohio. It would appear that the John May's immigrated between 1840 and 1850 census since I did not find John in the 1840 census. However, I did not see an Ann May in the Ballville 1850 census?

I found where John May's estate was probated but I have not had a chance to see the documents.

Sandusky County Probate Record

Last Name: MAY
First Name: JOHN
Prefix/Suffix:
Other Source Title: PROBATE CASE
Other Source Data: 1634
Year of Death: 1869

There is a good chance that the probate will list all of his children. I would be interested learning more about this family.
