I am also descended from Mansfield Crowe via his son, Benjamin F. Crowe. Checking the 1860 census for Washington Co., Ky, it is noted that Mary E. Crow(e) is listed with Mary A. Crow, who was head of the household. Per "Names in Genealogy: Their Origin & Meaning. . ." by Dr. Penelope Christensen, Nancy was often a nickname for someone named Anne. Mary Ann may well have been called "Nancy". Hope to hear from you.

I am looking for Charles Crowe as well. We were told he was from Ireland/Scotland and that he married a Sally Terpenning. There is a story that he was cutting down a tree and it fell on him killing him. When pregnant Sally saw his body she went into labor, delivered her baby and then died two days later. We are at a dead end with the Crowe name and could use any help we can get. I did an inquire through Ireland since that was the assumed location of his birth. This is the letter I got back. Anything sound familiar?

Casey,
Thank you for your valued enquiry,

We have identified the Crowe family, including Charles, on census returns from Summit NY for the years 1820, 1830, 1840 and finally 1850 just after the death of Charles. Furthermore, we have discovered a death record for Charles which also features his wife's demise just a few days after Charles's sudden death. This record provides a cause of death for Charles and his wife, and crucially confirms that Charles was born in Ireland. Another interesting aspect of this record is Charles' age at death which indicates that he was born a little before 1804, contrary to published reports by other researchers.

By using a revised DOB for Charles, I was also able to detect a reference to an emigration sailing from the north of Ireland dating from the 1820's. Unfortunately, I cannot locate any definitive records for Charles' baptism in Ireland.

We can offer you copies of any of the four census returns from Summit NY in return for a research fee of €10 (euros) per document, and the death record is available for €20. If you purchased the full set of these records for €60, then we would also send you the reference to research the possible arrival of Charles in the USA in the 1820's, which you can then investigate further by contacting the relevant US archives office.

I look forward to your instructions.
Regards,
Gerard
www.irishancestryresearch
Nollaig Shona Duit

Dear Jason,
Thank you for your quick response. I am very respectful of your reluctance. My journey into family history research began in 2002 with my father's line, Logsdon. I feel satisfied that I have adequately documented our lineage.

I most enjoy the old fashioned research of sifting through archives. Some internet genealogy information I'm skeptical about. I like evidence (land grants, census, wills, etc.) However, since I will not be able to visit Virginia for awhile to research Crowe, I've resorted to the internet.

The Crowe information you posted is the most indepth I've seen for my line. It includes counties and dates. These clues can lead to possible discovery of other information when I can personally go to those counties. My intent with any information you may kindly share is only for family information to be shared with my siblings. Our mother died two years ago and I am doing this in her honor. I am compiling our family tree and including history of the area and times where our family migrated.

My direct email is balburns@bellsouth.net.

Frankly, I'm envious you have such a wonderful treasure of family history!

I look forward to your response.

Kindest Regards,
Bonny Logsdon Burns

I recieved the information directly from my Great Uncle who is a direct decendant in the line and had the original papers that had been handed down since they were made. I would be willing to share information with you if I knew for exactly what purpose you were doing this research. I must tell you I am reluctant as I felt entrusted with the record at teh time and was able to copy down what I could even though I was not one of his direct sons.

Jason C.
Obituary of Miss Lucy Crowe (May 18, 1885 - June 26, 1908)

Transcription of original newspaper obit found in family papers of James E. Crowe's grandaughter, Mary Florence Wall. Sarah Lucy Crowe's death record said she died of a fever.

transcribed by Bonny Logsdon Burns.

Obituary of Miss Lucy Crowe

By the death of Miss Lucy Crow a wide circle of admiring friends were greatly shocked and her family thrown into the greatest of sorrows.
Her brief though eventful life came to an end at 4:15 a.m., June 26, 1908. She was born May 18, 1885, being at the time of her death a little over 20 years of age. She was the youngest child of Mr. & Mrs. G.W. Crowe of Claypool, Warren county, Kentucky…….(illegible sentence…) Three sisters, Mrs. J.R. Thomas of Nebraska, Mrs. J. E. Howell of Alabama and Miss Georgia, who resides with the parents. Two brothers, Mr. Lloyd and Mr. J.E. Crowe of Warren county. The funeral service was conducted at Rocky Baptist church by Rev. Walter Maybald of Scottsville, Kentucky, and the body laid to rest in the cemetery of the above church. The scripture lesson was Job the 14th chapter and Psalm 15:13.
Miss Lucy died just as she was entering the threshold of greater promise and achievement. Earlier prospects were maturing into greater prospects and an uncommonly bright future seemed to be unfolding before her. The greatest hope of her future was based upon the beauty and nobility of her character.
Unmeasured prospects were folded within the loveliness of her nature together with her aptness as a student and teacher. Her life was an expression and verification of these inner possessions. Her countenance was beautiful, radiant, inspired cheerfulness and hope and upheld the purity of the heart. She bore in her eye and upon her brow an expression of childlike innocence and sincerity. Courage and modesty, strength and humility, cheerfulness and dignity were happily balanced and blended in her nature and portrayed in her life. An unassuming winning uplifting influence radiated from her life like light from its center. Her beautiful spirit nature was so thinly veiled and her wealth of character endowments and energy of expression so pronounced that none who met her could fail to be impressed by them.
She had an exceedingly rare faculty for making and holding friends. She won, she held, and that by the silent influence of a guileless heart and an irreproachable life. The charm of her personality, the brilliancy of her intellect, the loveliness of her nature, the sincerity of her demeanor took hold on you and held you her admiring and abiding friend. She was unconsciously impressive. The dignity and it might be said the stateliness of her figure together with the beauty of her countenance made her attractive and impressive. You did not forget her. You admiringly remembered her and spoke of her intelligence, the loveliness of her young womanhood and prophesied of her bright and glorious future. Thus you were her friend at sight. In fact, to see her was to admire her, to know her was to love her, to know her better was to love her more, and those who knew her best and longest admired and loved her most.
As a teacher, Miss Lucy had an unexcelled record. She seems to have given perfect satisfaction wherever she taught. She had created for herself a demand and her services were earnestly sought. She entered the Western Kentucky State Normal at Bowling Green last January as a student. The faculty seeing her rare adaptation to the work of a teacher sought and secured her services. Here was was greatly appreciated. To the love and esteem of those who recited to her, her room was called the “Crow’s Nest,” a name given by her to the parental residence. Here she did her last work as a teacher on June 5, taking her bed within a few days.
Her success as a student and teacher may be attributed largely to the two thoughts suggested by the following notes found among her apapers after her death:
“Remember: Interest is always the mainspring of attention. To put your whole self into your work. If it is anything but dishwashing.”
Her efforts at self improvement through self-government and unselfishness to others are seen in her following resolutions:
“Resolved: To control my temper. To govern my tongue. To look on the sunny side of life. To be cheerful and make others cheerful. To be thoughtful and kind to others. To work with greater vim than ever. To be of some use in the world. To improve myself in every way. To keep my chin up and not be discouraged if I should once err from my resolution.”
(illegible sentence)….work as a teacher and her conception of the relation of the school room in the National life as seen in the following notes:
“Whatever you would have appear in the life of the Nation you must put into the school. Common schools are held accountable for the majority of the weaknesses and shortcomings of the National life.”
Whether these notes were original or not the selections show the impressions they made on her mind and the trend of her efforts in her schoolroom.
Miss Lucy had never united with any church. She made a profession of religion early in life and feeling she had not lived up to her religious duty she renewed her profession in her sixteenth year. Thereafter she remained more active in devotional exercises. However, being very highly conscientious and having what many might call an abnormal conception of Christian duty and failing to measure up to her ideals in some instances she wavered at times in her profession. Yet there was no interruption of private devotion and she was a regular attendant at public worship. Many of her closest friends regarded her as a exemplary and beautiful Christian. Whatever there may be of hesitancy and doubt in her mind gave way during her sickness. As the veil of flesh between her and her Savior grew thinner her faith grew stronger and she not only died in peace of mind, but very happy. The last demonstration of her future prospects will not be forgotten by those who were present.
The end came in greatest ease. There was not the twitching of a muscle and the breathing was easy and unclogged. It was repose in death.
Miss Lucy died in virgin purity – in the flower age of her young womanhood; not a shadow anywhere mars the beauty of her life or the splendor of her reputation; she leaes and honorable and enviable reputation as a standard example to her friends and as a lasting comfort to her loved ones; a life though brief, yet intense, active and full of effort rewarded by worthy attainments she leaves the world unacquainted with its deeper sorrows or weightier troubles only as she endeavored to share them through sympathy with others; lovely, lovable, Sarah Lucy Crowe, farewell.
One of the last descendants still resides on the family homestead in Mount Savage. They have preserved it as a museum which they call Evergreen which I have visted many times. In the past two years they have created a Hertiage center there. They have a website http://www.evergreenheritagecenter.org where there is some family info posted. I have numerous photos of him that I would like to share if I can connect to someone in the right family. I do not know where he was born.

i assume that john is blanche's father i would prefer if you did not let them know that i told you that they were alive as i dont have any contact with them as of this minute.
Did John know my father colin healy as i am thinking about contacting him and it would be good to have some prior knowldge e.g. what he was like?

I wish him luck in his contact with them, might be good to know how he gets on as it might mean they are more open to contact generally.
Jess
Jess; thank you for the information...I still know where John is. His mentor here, died recently. His daughter, I believe, did not respond to his second letter. I know he would have loved to have had a photo of her or something more. But....that is life.
Again, my thanks
Betty

CROW/MAD(D)OX MARRIAGE C. 1876 GEORGIA

I am looking for a c. 1876 Georgia marriage record for a John Maddox(vr.sp.) to a Mary N. Crow(?) b.c. 1847-1848 in Clarke County, Georgia. Another researcher answered my Crow/Maddox query on genforum asking about a Mrs. John Maddox who lived in Commerce, Georgia, in 1913 according to the funeral home information of her brother, Stephen Crow(e), when he died in Augusta, Georgia. They were children of James Crow and Frances Mary Ann Allen who married in Clarke County, Georgia,in 1846. I am looking for descendants and the parents of this James Crow. Another researcher on the Jackson County, Georgia, genforum board found a John and Mary N. Maddox in Newton County, Georgia, in 1900 and in Jackson County, Georgia, in 1920 living on the pauper farm both in their early 70's. I am not finding them in 1910 on Heritage Quest. No children indicated and married 24 years in 1900. This James Crow family was in Clarke County, Georgia, in 1850 and 1860 and in Greene County in 1870 and 1880. The family worked in the mills instead of farming. Except of Stephen Crow in Augusta, Georgia, and Amanda Crow who married P. C. Toole #1 in Oconee County, Georgia, in 1876, the marriage of another son in Clarke County in 1890 and some scrambled Clarke County census, the rest of the family seems to have disappeared after 1880. Any assistance appreciated.
Vivian Cates, Alto, Texas 1-936-858-3801
