Cunninghams in Unadilla, NY approximately 1940's,1950's

I'm looking for any help that I can get with these Cunninghams. Here's what I have.

My father-in-law provided me with his USMC discharge record that has the following information:

Last Civillian Employer: E.G. Cunningham Unadilla, New York
Occupation: Dairyman
Dates Last Civillian Employment: 1941-1951
Address: Road Delivery #2, Unadilla (Otsego), New York,

E.G. Cunningham is my father-in-law's father, but I don't know what "E.G." stands for. My father-in-law's middle name is Ephraim which is a family name. My best guess would be that the "E." is Ephraim or Ephram which is supported by an e-mail from one of my father-in-law's daughters that indicates that my father-in-law's father or grandfather (or both) may have been named Ephraim or Ephram. My father-in-law called his dad Gus so this may explain the "G."

Additionally, my father-in-law's daughter included the following information regarding the Cunningham family in her e-mail:
* Ephraim Cunningham and Emily McGrath of Banbridge of the County Down in Ireland are her great great grandparents.
* Emily McGrath's father was called Master McGrath.
* Ephraim, their son, came through Ellis Island and lists his sponsor as a McGrath.
* Her great grandmother, Sarah Jane Murphy (Ephraim's son's wife), was born in Scotland to Irish parents.
* Her "Grandma Cunningham" once told her that the surname once had a "O'" prefix, but she cannot find anything regarding this.
* She thinks that her Cunninghams are Irish and Anglicized their Irish surname.

Any help that anyone can provide is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Chris

Cunningham of Ballywildrick

I've been researching my grandmother's family, the Cunninghams, who came from Ballywildrick in County Londonderry in Northern Ireland, and who kept the farm there until my great-grandfather left for Scotland.

The problem is that I've come up with two conflicting genealogies for this particular family. Both agree until it comes to James Cunningham (b. 1800) who married Elizabeth Blair - one source says James' father was Peter Cunningham who married Margaret Anderson, quoting Parish Pew Registers at the Fist Presbyterian Church in Articlave, while the other source (which can be found at <<www.geocities.com/SoHo/Cafe/2684/htmlcunninghamtree>> and also listed on Worldconnect) says his parents were James Cunningham and Jeanette Wallace. It goes on to claim descendancy from Norwegians who sailed across to Scotland in the 1500s.

Can anyone help, with information on which one is more accurate, and could anyone link this family with the more prominent Cunningham branches, such as Glencairn?

Thank you for your help!

Fergus McGhee.

Gladys CUNNINGHAM (Mrs. Joseph) was listed in a 1985 obit as the surviving cousin of Statira M. MARTIN (b. 1908 KC, d. 1985 Honolulu). I'm uncertain but I believe the CUNNINGHAMs were related to Statira's mother, Annie May born Anniemay W. GRIFFIN 1885 in MO; she married John H. MARTIN in KC in 1905; Statira was b. in 1907. Hoping for any information about the CUNNINGHAMs.

Capt. Patrick Cunningham, Mississippi River Pilot, Obit c. 1900

(non-dated newpaper article circa 1900)

Capt. Patrick Cunningham, the biggest man on the river and well known in every river town from St. Paul to New Orleans, died at St Louis last week. He was nearly six feet tall and weighed three hundred and twenty pounds. His great weight caused him to retire from active service much against his will three years ago.
During his forty years of river life he has filled every position on a steamboat from second clerk to captain, and yet it was said of him that a word of profanity had never escaped his lips.
His conscientious scruples in regard to the use of profane language prompted him to adopt a vocabulary of his own in directing the work of his subordinates. Those who have listened to him say that his language when executed was stronger than that of the most godless mate that ever trod a lower deck, and more original than Chimmie Fadden's.
Captain Cunningham was in charge of the ill-fated "City of Quincy" when it burned, and was one of the few survivors of the accident. He had been in four explosions, but was never injured until seven years ago, when he fell from a gang plank and sustained a fracture of his left knee cap. This accident, coupled with his increasing weight, hastened his retirement.

The spelling of Margret's first and last name may be slightly off, but they immigrated from Ireland (Londonderry most likely) to USA (either NY or PA) either 1887 or 1888. One of their children, James, is my husband's grandfather. He was born in 28 April, 1885 in Stewart's Terrace, Londonderry. Is anyone else researching this family? According to the 1900 Census (they lived in Philadelphia Ward 36), John was born in 1853. Does anyone have his exact birthdate and place. Or his parents names, etc.? Thanks for any information you share. It's appreciated!

I just recently became aware of the names of my 2nd great grandparents on my mother's paternal side. Has anyone come across Hugh Cunningham, born in Killybegs, County Donegal, Ireland? He married Anne (maiden name unknown). They had at least one child, my great grandfather - Patrick Cunningham, who was also born in Killybegs. I have Patrick's U.S. Passport Application, which shows Hugh's name and I have Anne's Ellis Island immigration record (manifest that shows Patrick bringing Anne to the U.S to live with his family in Philadelphia). Any help would be appreciated.

Hi all

My ancestor Robert thought (in 1853) one of his brothers might have gone to Baltimore. Brothers I know about are John born in Dirleton, East Lothian, Scotland 1759 and James, born in Glasgow 1764. Their mother was Janet Heriot.

If this rings any bells please let me know -

Rory

Looking for information on James and Bridget(McGrath)Cunningham who came from Ireland in about 1850, with their cousin Hannah Cunningham. Hannah married John McMahon (also from Ireland) in Lewiston, Maine in about 1852. Hannah and John went to Wisconsin. Have not been able to locate where in Ireland they were all from. The information I have is from a Civil War Biography of John McMahon. Have not been able to track down James and Bridget. Help would be appreciated.

The Cunninghams were in Ky. during the Civil War, and when it ended they traveled to Mo., and settled near Garrison.
Pres's father John Cunningham looked after his mother, and sister Polly Anna. A son John remained, but oldest son Pres. left to start life in Ok. (around 1865), and he was never heard from again. Pres had a sister Mollie, who settled in Ok., marrying Wayne Devereux, and a later marriage to a man named See.
My GG-Grandfather was named Preston, after the missing "Pres" Cunningham.

If anyone has information about this family, I would appreciate hearing from you.
mechelle.wallace@yahoo.com
