You need to check the family trees on rootsweb. Type in the name as requested and when the first page comes up, go to the bottom and type in the last name of the spouse on the spouse line. There is a family tree and on the Jr. family tree there is a post-em note that will lead you to another Dawson that may be able to help you further. Have you tried checking census records to see if they are of any help in you quest for information? Good luck

I’m trying to locate information on my great grandfather Thomas Joseph Dawson Sr and my grandfather Thomas Joseph Dawson Jr. Thomas Sr was born in February 24, 1891 in New Bedford Massachusetts. He married Elsie Marie Robertson; I believe they had 6 children. He died on September 23, 1961 in Fairfax VA and he is buried at Flint Hill Cemetery. According to his tombstone he was a PFC TRPE 3 Cavalry in World War I. Thomas Jr was born on June 4, 1925 in Vienna VA, he was married to Charlice M Scott and they had 4 children 3 boys and 1 girl. His second wife was Zillah Christina Blevins, they had no children. He died on July 10, 1981 and is buried at Flint Hill Cemetery. I never met either of these men and my family cannot provide me with any information about them. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Ann Dawson died 1755, Probably Yorkshire

Sometime ago my Grandmother inherited a widows or mourning ring from her elder sister. The inscription on the ring is "Ann Dawson ob 24 feb 1755 aet 22" We understand that this means that Ann Dawson died on that date aged 22. My Grandmother was told that the ring has been passed down the female line.

We have traced back to a Sarah Dawson who was christened in Tickhill, Yorkshire in 1783, daughter of John Dawson and Elizabeth. We have found John and Elizabeth's grave stone in Tickhill parish churchyard, but we are now stuck. There does not appear to be a marriage of John and Elizabeth in Tickhill.

We are running out of time to find out for our grandmother who Ann Dawson was and how she was related to us.

Does anyone have this Ann Dawson in their tree?

Many thanks
Ruth

Hi Jack !
Sounds as if you're making some progress on your Dawsons !
I'm assuming you found a family tree that shows your Mary Margaret as the daughter of James and Lydia Ann Dawson.
I always caution the folks I correspond with to be carefull of family trees that they come across. Some are inadvertantly uploaded with errors (that's why I've never uploaded mine !).
Bottom line is - you have to prove to yourself that the information is correct.
Pleased that you had the chance to see the homeplace!!! I've had the opportunity to see where one of my grgrandfathers lived in VA & was amazed...
Afraid I've let my Ancestry subscription expire, so I'm not going to be much help (SORRY !!!).
Glad you like my440sixpack - most folks don't have a clue what it means...Can't wait for weather to warm up a bit so I can take it for a cruise !
Let me know if there's anything you think I might be able to help with.
All my best
Marlene

Hi Marlene.Long time no type. You sent me some info about my GrGrand Mother Mary Margaret Dawson. I stopped on that line of the family and just picked up on it again. Long story. I put her name in a list on Roots Webb and found her and it showed her husband to be my GrGrandfather. I went into this a bit further and it showed the Census of 1850 and listed her as the daughter of James and Lydia Ann Dawson. It also shows a sisters Rebecca Jane Dawson and Sarah Elizabeth Dawson. What strikes me with this info is I had an opportunity 2 1/2 years ago to see a small bit of my GrGrandfathers property. There was a picture of an Elizabeth Dawson and showed her to be Mary Margaret Dawsons sister. Your thoughts!! I like my440sixpac. Thanks Jack

I'm sorry I can't help. All my Dawsons going way back come from North Hertfordshire. There may be a connection but several centuries ago. One of the problems is the name. Dawson is pretty common.

Have you tried using Rootschat. If you go into the Hertfordshire bit someone may offer ideas about tracing your ancestor.

Good luck with your research

Roger Baines UK

Have you ever done a search on Bartlett Haggard on yahoo or any other search engine. One place you might want to check is on google. Check their books with the names you have. It is written by Charles Dawson. Some of the searches on Bartlett state that his wife was a daughter of Martin Dawson. I hope this will help. Have you checked the Virginia New York records that the University of Virginia has? I think that is where they are, or type in New York Virginia marriage records. It has been a while since I have searched for anything there. There arae also land records that can be searched for. I don't know if that would be of help or not.

Yes, I've checked those. That's where I saw that Nancy & Martha were supposedly Martin's daughters. However, verifiable sources for that information were nonexistant, just where someone copied someone else's GEDCOM.

Did Martin DAWSON leave a will in which he named his children, or any other documentation that would prove these girls were his children? Since the DAWSONs, HAGGARDs, ELKINs and GENTRYs intermarried so extensively, decoding the puzzle of who married who, and which children belonged with which parents is pretty much impossible without a verifiable source, so that's what I'm looking for.

Thanks!

Sorry Jean, I don't know this area well.

Really, the only thing I have is that our John named his property here in Western Australia, called 'Newbury', supposedly after his homeland in England.

As he was indentured to the Aggett family from Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, we feel that he must be from this region. We also knew that his father was named Joseph, a farmer.

We have found a record of a John Dawson b 1808 to Joseph Dawson and Cecelia Lee in Cheshunt. Although this Joseph appeared to have died in the poorhouse, there doesn't seem to be any birth record for this Joseph in Cheshunt. So am guessing that he must have been from an area close by - hence the Essex theory.

Have found quite a few Dawsons from around the Great Bardon? (great something) area in Essex.

Things must have been pretty tough for our John in England, having immigrated without family. We have found a record about Mrs Aggett, suggesting she was a real tyrant employer. I would love to connect too, but it is just so hard.

My email addresss: mferraro@iinet.net.au

Kind regards
Kerryn

Hello Kerryn we have Edward Dawsons convict record he was convicted in 1835 of stealing sacks and bran it was his 2rd offence.Previously for damage andorchard robbing. It stated he was single. His passage was on the Henry Porcher 15 Nov 1836. So far I have been unable to find the court record as it was in Essex Colchester. Do you have any clues about this area. The only clue is Thomas Blyth a brother in law stated on death cert. I have found a bit on this man but the info is loose. Hope we can connect links
Regards Jean

I am looking for the parents of Martha A. DAWSON, b. 11 May 1764 in Albermarle County, Virginia, and Nancy DAWSON b. 1769 in Albermarle County. These sisters are supposedly the daughters of Rev. Martin DAWSON, but I've yet to see any DAWSON info (for any of the Martins) that list these girls.

Martha married Bartlett HAGGARD on 10 November 1785 in Albermarle County, and Nancy married David C. HAGGARD 6 November 1790. Bartlett and David were twins, and sons of Nathaniel HAGGARD and Elizabeth GENTRY of Albermarle and Hanover counties in Virginia.

rootsweb.com is totally free. It is a sister site to ancestry.com. You will get a lot of William Dawson's the first time you type it in. Go to the bottom of the first page and go to the spouse line. You can type in either the first name or the last name of the spouse. With an unusual last time you have a better chance of matches. When you get to the first posting, you can click on the fathers names to get to the next family page. I didn't click on the mothers names. If you are new to researching genealogy please e-mail me at karosel33@yahoo.com and I will be able to give you some more information on sites to check, etc.

Hi not sure about a connection our Edward was a convict transported from Essex Colchester area to VDL. He was an argricultural labourer. His crime was stealing food.He may have had a sister called Ann. We found a brother in law called Thomas Blyth on Edward death cert. It is hard to track the history back to England as we do not have any clues.ANy way he turned out pretty good paid his debts and raised a family and we are all pretty nice!!

Joseph and Cecelia (nee Lee) Dawson - Hertfordshire and Essex

We have records of a John Dawson born 1808, Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, England to a Joseph Dawson and Cecelia Lee. Marriage records indicate that Joseph and Cecelia married Cheshunt 1805.

Records also indicate that Joseph died in the poorhouse 1816, but there are no further records of further children, neither death nor second marriage records for Cecelia. It is not known what became of son John. It is also not known where father Joseph and mother Cecelia were born.

My great great grandfather John Dawson was born around the same time as the above John and was indentured to a Du Bois Aggett and family from Cheshunt and brought to Western Australia 1830. We are having difficulty proving if these same records belong to our John. It is possible that our John may have come from Essex, as he named his farming property in Australia 'Newbury', and there is a Newbury located in neighbouring Essex.

If anyone has further information on this family I would love to hear from them.

Kerryn

This is a long shot. I have been searching for the origins and family of my great great grandfather John Dawson b c1808, son of Joseph Dawson. John was indentured as a farm servant to a Du Bois Aggett and family and was brought to Australia 1830 as a young man (without family) in board the Egyptian. The Aggett family was from Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, England.

There is a record of a John Dawson, born 1808 to a Joseph Dawson and Cecelia Lee in Cheshunt. This same Joseph appeared to have died in the poorhouse 1816, there are no further records of any more children or Cecelia's death. We are not even sure if this record belongs to our family. There is another interesting record from Much Hadham, Hert of another family of similar names.

Would love to hear from you if you think we could have a connection.

Kerryn

I'm searching for my grandfathers family he was living in Washington, D.C. in as early as 1932 when my father was born. He came to D.C. to get a job with the liquor control board, but it fell through. He originally I believe was from either Mullica Hill, NJ where his family owned a dairy farm. (or) they managed a hotel in Atlantic City, NJ. His only sister was in Virginia working for a family. He did drive a car for a Virginia family for a short time too, until he found a job with The Home Mutual Life Insurance Company. My grandmother was his second wife, Harriet Burke.

Re: Info on Wm Henry Harrison Dawson 1840

Wm Henry Harrison Dawson was my gggrandfather also. He was a riverboat capt on the Mississippi, where he met Sarah Boynt, in New Orleans. He fought in the Civil War in a Virginia Regiment, where he was raised. He became a preacher in Jackson, Ohio. They had several children, one of whom was my great grandfather.
My ggrandfather was married with daughters in Jackson/Oak Hill, then moved to the Roseville, Ohio area. He was re-married and had 6 kids with his 2nd wife, last name Payne. My grandfather was one of those 6, named William Dawson, from Roseville (near Cannelville). He would have been your grandmother's brother or half-brother, depending.
I would like to piece together the names on the family tree.

Hi! My name is Haley Dawson Beach. I am a daughter of Donovan Howard Dawson, son of Minnie E. Dawson. I have been doing some family gengeology and found this old request and thought I would respond. My grandmother, Minnie, died in the late 1970's and my father, Donovan, died in 1984. I hope this is somewhat helpful. You can contact me via e-mail for more information if you would like.
-Haley
