My father's father was Peter Dignan and his mother was Bridget Gill. Both were born in Ireland and both came to
the USA during the American Civil War. They lived in
Chicago, Illinois. Not sure what they did for a living.
My father was born in 1893 in Chicago. From what I
understand he lived, work, and died in Chicago, Il.
He and my mother split in the mid to late 1940's. And
he died in 1952 in Chicago. And is buried there with
his father, mother and 4 sibs. Most if not all of my close
Dignan relatives are died, or so I think. My mother insured
I did not have contact or knowledge of my father or his
family.
I have more knowledge about my mother's family. Its
my father's family I am short of almost of any knowledge.
Hopefully some one who is a Dignan or related to a Dignan
knows of William Patrick Dignan who was my father or of
his family.
Hope this is enough importance to get started. Anyone can
reply or ask questions.

I have no information on Patrick before he arrived in Boston on June 4, 1882 on the ship "Kansas". Ellen Gibbons arrived in Boston from Ireland on the ship "Aleppo" on May 23, 1880. Let me know if this sounds right. Regards, Bridget
Good Morning and thank you for your reply. I can only figure that the Dignan family was in Vermont by 1835. Jane's parents were born in Ireland, but I have found no solid traces of other family members. I believe there may be some connections to Ogdensburg NY in some way based on other information I have, but it's only a theory.

What time frame are your Degnan's?

Thank you for your reply. I have not been able to locate my Denning connections in County Meath as of yet, prior to their immigration to Rutland, Vermont. If Mary has any connections to a Bryan Denning or any spelling of his name, it would be good to get in contact. If she has relatively easy access to any Denning Family information that would not be an inconvenience, it would also be good.

Sara

I cannot find anything on Amanda's(wife of James Hayes Dignan) parents. In a obituary posted in the Frederick News Post she was referred to as Amanda Lee Kaylor, but on the census she has down Mamie Marie Kaylor (B: abt 1876, D: 1947 in Garrett County, MD).

Have you looked for these ancestors on the censuses yet?
They are not related to me, but I previously noted William Dignum, in 1901 Battersea, with his parents Edward and Caroline and sibs: Bettie 1891, George 1897, Robert 1899. Edward is a scaffolder, b abt 1865 Greenwich.
There is an 1871 Battersea census with an Edward of the correct age living at home with his family.
Father William Dignum, blacksmith, wife Eliza. Children William b 1862, Eliza 1863, Edward 1865, Harriet 1867
Sorry I do not have the exact census references as I used not to be so careful in noting down my sources.
I do not have any Woodley marriages in my family tree of my immediate Dignum forebears.
I cannot rule out that Bill/William Dignum is more distantly related, because I have not tracked all the more distant descendants of early cousins.

If you want to take it further I think you will need to find the relevant marriage certificate.

The majority of Dignums in 19th century were in Liverpool/Manchester, according to registered births. There are only a few families in London.
Regards, Helen

Hi Thomas.

My father seems to remember a Woodley marrying a Dignam / Dignum / Digman around 1920's +++ ? Possibly a Bill (William)

He is unsure on the spelling. You can understand this was a long time ago, before my father was born.

Do you have anything like that in your tree?

Kind Regards

Clive Woodley
(Alice Springs, Australia)
Hi Karin:

I did a little sleuthing, but to no avail. I looked for information under Kimball, and found a Benjamin Kimball
living in Iowa in 1880 married to Julia. The youngest child was Grace, age 4. Benj. was born in New Jersey
and Julia, New York. Grace had 3 other siblings, older
than her. I found nothing on Jack, however, Jack is a nickname for John or James. Of course you knew that.
Jack undoubtedly worked, as my ggrandfather John Deignan, for the Rock Island Railway. I checked with the
Railroad, and they said they kept no records on employees in those years. It looks as though your Dignan's are as elusive as mine. Of course, the spelling of the name "Deignan, Dignan" was often slaughtered by the enumerators of census'.

I got the information that I'm sending from Family Search.com. They have a great website, one which I use
exclusively as well as Ancestry and Rootsweb.

I so hope you find something. Please keep in touch and
let me know.

Dianne

Thanks Christine for your response to my query. Yes, I've run thru the entire gambit, but to no avail. There are many, but none related. This is a rather "backward" approach to reaching relatives of my ggrandfather, John W. Deignan, Edward Dignon had children that were named after John W, his wife and children, and I felt it was not a coincidence, but there had to be a tie. I've been doing research, trying to find him for 30 years now, trying to follow any lead that I can, but because of name variations, it's been so difficult.

Thanks again so much for your suggestion.

Christine: Thanks again for your e-mail. I am currently searching the entire Maine census for 1860 looking for my ggranfather John Wellington Deignan, as the 1880 census, in which the enumerator slaughtered his name, showed it as "Dakin" born in Maine. It's been a job, but feel it may be worth the while. His military disability papers show him as born in Ireland. John W's father was, according to the census born in France and his mother in Ireland. I understand that the Irish in order to keep their Catholic faith had to leave Ireland in the 1840's and move to Brittany France. Will keep an eye out for your grandfather too. Thanks much!!!!

In June 2000, my grandmother, Mary Lyons Hutchinson passed away and my sister had to split alot of things amoung my siblings and cousins. One of them is a picture of John C. Dignan. It's a black and white photo with grey and white frame around it. He wrote it down "Sincerely John" and on the back it says John C. Dignan.

My grandmother is from Connecticut. I am wondering if Mary Hutchinson sounds familiar to you?

If so, please let know. Thanks.

Christine
