Hello Susan,
Aye, don't we ALL have a John Donovan in there somewhere! It sounds as if this John Donovan might have been born after Irish civil registration started in 1864. To have a son in 1894, he would be 30--there is a chance!
So after you find the Naturalization papers and the marriage papers, perhaps you will have enough infformation to get your man back to his Irish Townland--fims of Irish births are indexed and on film at LDS Family History Center. But you need more clues, like a birthdate--as there are many John Donovans born in Ireland. Some of them are mine!
