In May 2008, I gathered Donovan surname information from the National Library in Dublin and from four cemeteries in and around the town of Skibbereen in southwest County Cork. All the Donovan information I obtained pertains only to this southwest area of Ireland.
If you are interested in reviewing this information, please contact me at barbwalsh49@gmail.com

Donovan Family Bantry Co Cork to Massachusetts & Pennsylvania

I am currently researching my Donovan ancestors who all left Bantry, Co. Cork for America and Australia in the late 19th Century. My great great grandfather was Jeremiah Donovan who married Johanna McCarthy in Bantry circa 1855. They had (according to family history) 15 children who all left except for the youngest, my great grandmother, Kate O'Donovan born in 1871 and who remained in Bantry. Except for the eldest Florence Donovan (d. 1930) who went to Herberton, Queensland, Australia we don't know what became of the others and have only sketchy early history of what happened to them. A brief outline of the names we have are -

Daniel Donovan (b.1860, d.Jan 1938) became a coal miner, who I believe went to Minooka, Scranton, PA and died in 1938. If I have the correct Daniel Donovan he married an Ellen Sullivan and his daughter Ann married a James Nallin.

Mary Donovan (d. 1892) who had married a James Downey. She had three children Johanna, Robert and Elizabeth. Johanna Downey is on the 1901 Irish Census as she was obviously sent to Ireland after her mother died but she returns to America in 1907. Robbie Downey went to Wales. It would seem that Mary died the same year Elizabeth was born (1892)and in the 1900 US census I find an Elizabeth Donovan who emigrated in 1892 already a widow (married name O'Brien) with an eight year old adoped daughter named Elizabeth. I'm assuming Elizabeth Donovan went to America to help look after the children when her sister died. She also had a son named Dennis Francis O'Brien. A photo of him was found in Bantry of him when he was 26 living in Stone Street, Walpole, Massachusetts.

Michael Donovan who died in 1918 in Boston. A mass card was sent to Bantry.

A Peter Donovan of Boston, Massachusetts in mentioned in a family letter. The letter states he was alive in 1930 and that he was a journalist.

Other family names that could be connected are Jeremiah, James and John.

This I have put together with census records, family information, etc. I have yet to obtain birth, death certificates. Would love to hear from anyone who thinks this sounds familiar.

Breda

Anthony (O') Donovan b. 1789/1790 Tipperary

I am attempting to research for my family in the US. Great Great Great Grandfather Anthony Donovan (1789/90), married to Margaret Finn (O'Donovan - according to daughter Elizabeth's baptismal record of 1836 in Golden, Tipperary) emigrated to New York in 1845, later settling in the Bloody Fourth Ward of Madison, WI. Likely son of the "Popish Inhabitant" Patrick O'Donovan of Dunstrileage noted in the 1766 census (we think he's Anthony's father because his first son is named Patrick, which seems to be a conventional naming technique.)

Any information (or information leading to information) on Patrick O'Donovan, Anthony Donovan, Margaret Finn, Patrick O'Brien would be most appreciated. We seem to only know of our family from the point of departure and would love some help. I've tried to find Dunstrileage on maps all over Ireland but am finding nothing , even of a similar spelling. It is certain that this part of the Donovan family does not hail from Cork, rather Tipperary.

Thanks,
Melia Donovan

HELP with Burns, Taylor, Donovan!!

I am searching for any information about my Irish ancestors, who lived in Chicago. My great-great-grandmother was Ella Johanna De Witt (nee. Burns). I am searching for information about her parents, and their parents.

What I know follows:
father - Malicha Burns, b.1859, Chicago
paternal grandfather - Daniel Burns, b.?, Ireland
paternal grandmother - Johanna Donovan, b.?, Ireland
mother - Johannah Taylor, b.1866, Illinois
maternal grandfather - David Taylor, b.1825, Ireland
maternal grandmother - Bridget nee?, b.1830, Ireland

I have Malicha's death certificate, which lists his parents names and that they were born in Ireland, but nothing else. Also, I haven't been able to find Malicha in any census before 1900.
I got the names of Johannah Taylor's parents from census records, but I don't know anything else beyond that.

I would appreciate any help that anyone can provide. I hope to hear from someone soon. If you have any questions, please let me know. Thanks.

-Matthew De Witt
Kenosha, Wis.
ccwalker_uwp@yahoo.com

He shows on the 1810 Federal Census in Virginia with wife and 6 children. The family moves to Bourbon, Kentucky by 1812. Can't trace him back to Ireland. Is this the brick wall?

Patrick Donovan of Cork Co. & New Brunswick

Patrick Donovan (born 1810) emigrated from Cork Co, Ireland, sometime around 1840. His wife was Julia (maiden name Corcoran or Coughlin, born 1817) Their children in NB were Mary, Ann, and John Joseph (who was born 1845 in St. John, NB.) The family left NB probably around 1850, moved several times in New England and settled down in Lanark, Wis., by 1855. By this time, the couple had six other children: Patrick, Daniel, Julia, Ella, James, and Llewelyn. In 1968, John J. Donovan distinguished himself as an Army Scout at the Battle of Beecher Island, Colorado. Does anyone see a family connection? I'm very interested in learning more. Thanks so much, Gill Donovan

My great grandmother, Margaret (Maggie) Bohan was born in Ireland c 1850 and died in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1924. She was the daughter of Cornelius Bohan and Ellen Sheehan. She married Patrick J. Donovan in New York City on 18 June 1876.

Patrick was born in Ireland c 1850 and died in NYC or New Jersey in 1906. He was the son of Patrick Donovan and Catherine Donevan. I do not know if Catherine's maiden name was Donevan, or if it was a variation of her married name.

Patrick and Margaret are both buried in Old Calvary Cemetery in NYC.

They had at least 6 children - I have names and dates for my grandmother, Annie Dononvan (1877-1961 - Married to William Davison); Patrick (1879); Michael (1881-1938); Timothy (1887-1911).

I have no other knowledge of where in Ireland these Bohan, Sheehan, and Donovan lines originated or when they immigrated to the US.

Maggi Davison
I just found the name(s) of my ggg- grandparents, Jeremiah and Ellen (Cormick) Donovan, parents of Ellen who married Daniel Cronin in Manhattan, NY 12 Oct 1871. Daughter Ellen was born in Bandon abt 1849. I have no idea when Jeremiah or Ellen Cormick were born but I know they were Catholic.

I believe daughter Ellen immigrated to NY between 1861 and 1870. I don't know if she was with her parents or not. I believe she had a brother or Uncle named Patrick. She also had a cousin or sister named Honora Driscoll. Daniel immigrated to NY in 1861 and was also born in Bandon abt 1843- 1848.

Anyone else researching these Donovans?

Hi All

I'm looking for some help in researching David Donovan born in Georges street, Cork city in 1898. I have quite a lot of information taken from his memoirs that he started to write but unfortunately never finished. He got as far as 1914 when he became a trooper in the North Irish Horse by lying about his age.

What I would like is to be able to verify at least some of the information listed below, as every lead I have followed so far has come up as a dead end.

Father - Joseph Donovan work for the Cork Examiner
Mother - Mary Donovan nee Henley
Both died around 1908 or 1909
Lived at the following addresses in cork
Georges street
Watercourse Road
Lower Granmire Road

After his parents death was sent to board at Wilton College, later renamed St. Joseph's College

If anyone has information or could point me right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advanced
I am trying to trace my John Donovan, married to Julia Coleman approximately 1820's. Only child I know of is Catherine who married Timothy Dilworth and had a child in Ballyvaloon, which I believe is northwest of Mallow. She had 9 children in all, 4 of whom came to the US in the 188os. Any information on either of these families would be appreciated.
Cheryl

Hannora Donovan Haly Historical Obit 1828 -1892 Ireland to Illinois

“Hannora Donovan was born in Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland, about 64 years ago. She left her home on the Emerald Isle forty-five years ago to join her brother William, who was connected with Dr. Osgood in the Calagogue medicine works in Norwich, Conn.

In 1856, she was united in marriage to William Haly in Norwich. In the spring of '57 they came to Decatur, then only a dreary looking waste. Accustomed to the East and its civilization, the West, with its mud and roughness, was very uninviting to Mrs. Haly. In 1858 she with her husband came to Cerro Gordo, there being at that time only a few scattered houses here and there and prairie for miles around. Since then Cerro Gordo has been her home. In 1883 her husband was called to the other life. Three children were born to them, one of whom died in infancy, Ella is the wife of W. J. Simons and resides four miles in the country. Hannora stayed with her mother, and is a well known teacher in the Cerro Gordo schools.
……………………

On Saturday, July 23, she departed this life and on Sunday the funeral services were held in St. Patrick's church in Decatur…..after which she was laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery west of the city.”

July 30, 1892
The Daily Review
Decatur, Illinois

I am not related. This was found while researching my own line. Please send an email if you would like a copy of the complete article.

Bartholomew Donovan (b. 1840 in Ireland) was my Gr Gr Grandfather. He had a brother James (b. 1835 Ireland) and probably one named George also born in Ireland. I know that he was in VA in the middle 1850's - 60's and then moved to E. NE. (Bart married Ella Rachel Dugan in 1863 in Richmond, VA) At one time one or all of the brothers were in the St. Louis, MO area. If you think or know you are related to these men and would like to exchange information, I would appreciate hearing from you. If you don't recognize these names, I have a lot more names of relations connected to this and other family lines many of which have connections to E. NE. Thank you.

Trying to trace my gg-grandmother's roots. Catherine "Kate" Donovan was born circa 1854 in Maine, and her parents were born in Ireland. Best match so far is that her parents were Michael & Mary Donovan, who were residing in Portland, ME, in the 1850 & 1860 census. Their children were Mary, Ellen, Daniel, Catherine, Hannah, Julia, Margaret, and John. The family moved to California after 1860 and resided in San Francisco. My gg-grandmother is found in the 1880 census, married to Stephen Pullen and residing in Contra Costa County, CA.

If anyone has connections to this family, please contact me to help me discover my Donovan family ancestry
