Peter Downey and Catherine Allen Downey, New Orleans, LA

I am looking for information on Peter Downey and his wife, Catherine Allen, who lived in New Orleans, LA around 1850. Their son, Michael Downey, named them as his parents on his New Orleans marriage certificate dated 1877. Peter, who was born in Ireland, arrived in New Orleans from Liverpool on 8 Dec 1848 aboard the ship Archelaus. He was 22. On the 1850 Census Catherine Allen, age 18, reported that she was born in Ireland. This is all the information that I have on these two; I cannot seem to discover anything further about them. If anyone can help, I would be very appreciative.

Hi I am trying to find any info on a family that I found in the 1850 District 34, Madison County, Alabama census.

S B Downey 40
Mary Downey 18
Martha Downey 15
Rachael Downey 12

All are female. The only thing I do know is that Mary Downy Married Fred Ferguson McElyea on 21 Jul 1855 and had 3 children: Elanor, Melissa & William Joseph. She must have passed between 1858-1860 as Fred remarried in 1860.

I would very much appreciate any tidbit no matter how small.

Thank you
Looking for information or the descendants of Kathleen Downey.

Kathleen’s parents were Patrick (John) Downey b 14th January 1872 in the Parish of St Johns, Limerick, Ireland. Patrick’s wife was Bridget Norton born about 1872 in Ireland. They married in 1895 in Massachusetts; USA They lived in Boston City, Suffolk, Massachusetts. The children born in Massachusetts were – Catherine 1895, William 1898, Martin 1901 & Mary 1906. Patrick & Bridget show on the 1900 & 1910 census results. Also on both census returns is Winifred Norton, Bridget’s mother.

The next records we have of Patrick are when he joined the Military in 1914. Patrick’s records show that his dependants were Winifred Norton his mother-in-law and Kathleen (this may be another child or Catherine 1895. Patrick has spelt it Kathleen in his Army application) his daughter he states here that he is a widow. The residential address is given as 36 PENNYWELL, LIMERICK. I do not know what happened to Bridget and the other children born in Massachusetts.

Patrick’s 1914 WW1 pension record shows that he was serving in the CORK RGA REGIMENT NO 614. The 4th May 1916 to 12 May 1918 Patrick served in Malta. Here his dependants in 1918 changed to Ellen Constance Cherrett and daughter Phyllis. On the 31st May 1918 Patrick was sent to India and came back 3rd June 1919.

On the 21st September 1919 Patrick married Ellen Cherrett (Nell) and the residential address was then, Poole Hill, Bournemouth, Hampshire, England. Patrick was medically discharged from the army 29th November 1919 and died in 1928 in Southampton.

After Patrick died Ellen married again, Eli Joe Ernest Toms in 1929 and had three more children. None of Patrick’s first children were brought up with the Toms family yet they would have been very small at the time (Phyllis 12, Mary 9, Alys Dorothy 6 and John 4 four years old) so who brought up these children?

The only person I can not account for is Kathleen. They all grew up knowing each other and were in contact with each other through adulthood. They also visited Ellen from time to time.

Sincerely
Tess Cawley
tesscawley@telkomsa.net
Cape Town
South Africa

Hi, would the cemetery you are looking for be St Molaise, it is a very old cemetery but there are some slightly more recent burials there too. It was officially church of Ireland but people of all faiths were buried there. It is a few miles North west of Enniskillen on the B81 at Monea. I am a Downey from the Fermanagh Downeys too so I hope you find what you are looking for. My family farmed at Ballagh which is near Lisnaskea, I believe there are still Downeys there.
Regards Cas

Hello,

I am traveling to Ireland in September 2009 with my father (whose grandfather was Cairncross Carson Downey who wrote the Downey-Hawksby book referenced on the message board). I was wondering if anyone could tell me where Monea Chapel Churchyard is actually located? (Where James Downey was buried.) I know it is in county Fermanagh, but I'm assuming the chapel may no longer have the same name as I cannot find its specific location. Any help is much appreciated. We just want to see as many landmarks that we can on our trip. If you have any other suggestions of Downey family must-see sites, that would also be great. Thank you in advance!

Downey DNA

Hello,

I am seeking to encourage members of the various Downey/Downie families to get their DNA profiles completed (in particular the male YDNA markers and haplotree). I have to say that I do not support, receive commissions or suggest any one DNA supplier. My reasoning behind the request is that there appears to be a number of different Downie family trees that do not appear to intersect (as far as the records go back) and believe that things could be made easier if you could eliminate the 'false' positives.

I recently had my DNA done with Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) https://www.familytreedna.com/ and am happy with their services (again please shop around and find the best deal for you). What is important is that regardless of which DNA company you choose, that this information is uploaded to a public site such as YSEARCH http://www.ysearch.org (a free public service).

While this path of investigation (DNA) will never replace a good document trail, it does provide some avenues of reserach where perhaps grouping some of the Downey/Downie families together that may assist in the process. What I can say is that the test has revealed some very interesting information regarding my genetic background.

Regards,

Damian Downie

I'm looking for information on the Downey/Downing families from Ireland. Gggfather, Timothy Downey immigrated from Ireland about 1847. Was married to Bridget Sullivan/O'Sullivan in Ireland. They had several children, one of them was my ggmother, Mary Agnes. She married my ggfather, Maurice Downing. His father and mother, my gggparents, were Maurice/Morris Downing and Ellen Higgins. Both immigrated from Ireland. My problem is that I have very little information as to where in Ireland both families came from. I do know that Timothy and Bridget had relatives in Glenbeigh, County Kerry. All families, in the US resided in Stamford and Bridgeport, Connecticut. I know that Timothy got killed by a train in Bridgeport in 1899.

Judy Downing

The Downeys definitely lived in Ashley Co Arkansas. There is a plaque honoring the first setlers in the area and the Downeys are listed. I will try this weekend to gather info which is stored, and get back to you next week. My understanding is that when John Cook Downey was in the civil war he was a POW in Penn (I think). When released he stopped to visit family in Bessemer Al. I recall my mom telling about the local phone book having an entire column of Downeys back in the 70s.

He was also in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Do you have anything past Peter Downey ?
I saw just now that in 2004 you were researching Downeys in New Orleans. I wondered if you might know anything about Andrew Downey, born circa 1840 in Ireland, married to Catherine Hutchinson. They are in New Orleans in the 1860 and 1880 censuses. In 1880 my husband's grandmother, Julia Broderick (shown on the census record as "Brodrenk") is listed as a cousin of the head of house. I am trying to learn more about this Downey family. Julia married Thomas Joseph Hutchinson, also born Ireland -- looking for connections between Thomas and Catherine.
