This is a mix-up and I'm hoping that someone can straighten this out for me. I have an Ann Dredge ROSS, b 24 Nov 1812, married to a Charles JARVIS. Ann is the daughter of John ROSS and Elizabeth Upchurch DREDGE. Elizabeth is the daughter of a Thomas DREDGE and Ann (I would imagine UPCHURCH). Does anyone have any information on these names i.e. Dredge/Upchurch? Thank you. Marlene

Hi we are part of a Dredge family that emigrated from South Arica in 1986 to settle in Sydney, Australia. We have since moved to Noosa on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland.
Our family originally migrated from the British Isles in 1820 to settle in South Africa. We have since found traces of the Dredge family just outside of Bath in Frome in England.
If there are any Dredge family links out there relative to this brief information please let me know.
Neville Dredge
re Love Dredge... This is such an unusual name and appears in my " Kinship Report" of the Wheeler family.it seems that Love was my 3rd cousin x1 removed. My grandmother was Elizabeth Ann Wheeler daughter of Charles and Jane Wheeler of Longbridge Deverill...I am afraid that is all I know... I will search the Ancestry Registry and let you know if I discover anything more. I live in Dorset about 40 miles from Longbridge Deverill.
Best wishes in your search, I hope to hear from you.
Hi Alison, hope you still have a look at this now and then. I am Darren Rae Dredge from Palmerston north New Zealand and I am tracing my direct line back which is James Dredge, B.1840 (Wincanton, Somerset) lived in Alderbury, Wiltshire, Carpenter-(g8g8 grandfather). He came to NZ on the Atrato in 1874 with Wife Caroline, b.1848, and boys Darcy Egbert (my Gr8 Grandfather)age 4 and Gerald aged 1 at that time. Funny thing is James father b. 1816 Evercreech, Somerset was a Carpenter as was the next 5 generations including me! Hope we have a common link! Regards please be in touch.

Hi there, My name is Darren Rae Dredge from Palmerston North, New Zealand and I am researching my direct line which gets back as far as 6 generations to date. My Gr8 gr8 Grandfather James Dredge b.1840, Wincanton,Somerset, came to New Zealand with his wife Caroline Gertrude and Sons Darcy Egbert and Gerald on the 1874 eventful voyage on the 'Atrato' converted padel steamer. I have also found James father was James b.1816, Evercreech married in 1837 to Amelia also b.1816, and had another son (& possibly other kids), William in 1838. Wonder if we have a link? There are lots of Dredges in Somerset/Wiltshire area at that time. Good Luck!

Hi, i do not have a lot of information specifically on Edith Dredge, but i have a lot about the family.

Well as i said she had 3 brothers, Fred B. 1903, Harry B. 1910 and Arthur B. 1919. I also believe Edith was born in also born in 1919, i think that Arthur and Edith were twins as their birth dates were within 1 day of each other but i cannot find the exact dates at the moment. Their parents were Elizabeth Dredge B.1881 and Alfred Dredge B.1877. On July 18th 1921 the whole family went to Ellis island from Liverpool, they stayed in America until 1927 in Philadelphia. Whilst they were over there Elizabeth Dredge died, and is buried in a cemetery in Philadelphia.
The oldest child, Fred Dredge then stayed in America and married twice. I believe the rest of the children then came back to England to live.
There is an Ellis island website with all of their records on from when they went across - http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/

I hope this has helped you.

Do you have any information on any other Dredges ?
Thanks.

I'm researching a George Dredge (b abt 1813, Frome, Somerset) who married an Elizabeth Armstrong (b abt 1814, Oxford). George, a coach painter/builder, seems to have lived in Cheltenham from around 1840 until his death (probably some time in the 1860s).
George and Elizabeth seem to have had 6 children between 1840 and 1853 and I am descended from one of them, Eliza, b 2 August 1841.
I'd be grateful for any information about these Dredges.

Francis
Sydney, Australia

Dredge origins

My Dredges came from Wiltshire, England, but I'm interested in the distribution of the Dredge Surname, and where it might have originated.

The 1881 census recorded Wiltshire as the most populous county for Dredges with 154 of that name recorded there. Somerset had 127 Dredges, Middlesex 118, Surrey 76, Hampshire 39, Gloucestershire 32, Worcestershire 31, York WR 22, Warwick 18, Berkshire and Isle of Wight 17, Derbyshire 16, Devonshire 14, Monmouthshire 13 and Dorset and Yorkshire NR 12. All other counties had less than 10.

Of the possible variant spellings, there were 12 Dridges in Sussex and 6 in Hampshire, while for the name Drodge, 12 were in Hampshire and 5 in Lancashire. The name Drudge was clustered in the Isle of Wight, with 70 Drudges there, 26 in Hampshire and 10 each in Middlesex and Surrey.

The surname Drage has a different derivation (and its own surname forum). It was most common in Northamptonshire in 1881 (482 persons), with 170 in Middlesex and 138 in Hertfordshire.

Are there any other early Dredge families out there?

Belinda in Australia
Hi I have found a Sarah Dredge c 18.9.1825 in Frome Somerset father William mother Sarah. This is on the IGI. If you want to look for the church records you will have to go to Taunton in Somerset. But make an appointment first. (theres a shortage of space) You will be able to look at the 1841 - 1891 census for Somerset in London in the Record Centre, Middleton Street, (I think thats how its spelt) where you can order all birth marriages and death certificates for the UK after 1837). If Sarah was marriaged over here you should be able to get her marriage certificate there as all records are from 1837, before that you will have to go to the churches if you know them. Good Luck Irene

Richard & Mary (dau of Giles MILLER; he d before 1752) had son William, alive (not adult?) in 1752. I have a copy of the Will of Henry GOUGH, weaver of Newbury, dated 10/10/1752, in which he leaves paltry sums to 3 siblings (his wife Mary nee LAWRENCE had d by then, and I can find no children for them), and the bulk of his estate to William DREDGE, for his maintenance, apprenticeship & education. I'm wondering if the DREDGEs might have been related to the GOUGHs (or LAWRENCEs)? Anyone have any info please on DREDGEs in Newbury mid-1700s?
Thanks.
