Hi Abner Dykes would be my great grandfather. I am looking for information on my grandfather David Crockett Dykes. Born Aug 1893. He died someitme in the 1950's late I think. He is buried in an unmarked grave in Lyburn Wva His estranged wife Lucy is buried there also in an unmarked grave. One of their sons was my father Rex Chester Dykes. My names is Lisa Dikes Abbott. I have no idea why my name is with an I instead of a Y. My Father was in the Army during the Vietnam War and I never knew him. His is buried at the National Cemetarty in Beaufort Sc. He died in 1992 at a Veterans hospital in Georgial. The church where the cemetary in WVA where my grandparents are buried burned years ago and all records were lost, the cemetary has been abandoned and only older local people even know it is there. I am looking for an aunt that I had brief contact with when my father died. Her birth name was Linda but she went by Brenda. Her married name at that time was Taulabee, not sure if that is spelled correcty. Any information you have that you can share would be greatly appreciated.

John and Harriet DYKES had 2 daughters whom they named Harriet ~ I can account for the first daughter (who married a William MILLS in 1890) but of the second Harriet I can find no record. I'm wondering if she changed her name to Hannah because in the 1891 Census there is mention of a Hannah DYKES
b. Newcastle upon Tyne 1875. Or did the enumerator transcribe the name wrongly on the 1881 Census?

Source Citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 4976; Folio: 120; Page: 6; GSU roll: 1342197.

Bolton - Dykes Orangeburg
Spencer Bolton was in Orange Orangeburg District. On Dec. 11, 1806 he sold 230 acres to Isaac Dykes. The land was adjacent to Joe Cooper and bounding on Goodland Swamp. Spencer Bolton was from Georgetown, South Carolina born on the Pee Dee River in 1735. He is found in Spartanburg, SC and also in Buncombe Co., NC.

Does anyone know of a relationship to the Isaac Dykes family? In 1870s court case Rev Bryan Dykes is called a 'cousin' of Solomon Bolton, son of Spencer Bolton. Appreciate any help. Thanks!
----
Q. State whether or not you know a preacher named Dyke? If so, where did he live, how was he related to Solomon Bolton, and what race of people did he belong to? How was he treated and recognized in this and Hamilton County?
A. I knew the preacher Dyke, have heard him preach. He lived some where about Kelly's Ferry Marion County. I do not know the relation he sustained to Solomon Bolton. I have heard he was a cousin, but don't know of my own knowledge how that is. He claimed to be of the same race of people that Solomon Bolton claimded to be - Portuguese and Spaniard perhpas, I do not remember positively.
-----

Q. Did you know Rev Bryan Dyke? What relation was he of Sol Bolton? What denomination of Christians did he belong to? How was he recognized and treated in the community where he lived and preached?
A. I knew Mr. Dyke. I think he called Solomon Bolton uncle, but it might have been a cousin. I am not certain about it. He was well respected amongst the people, preached for and associated with white people.
Q. Which was the darker Solomon Bolton or Mr. Dyke? Were they not or did they not claim to be of the same race of people?
A. Mr. Bolton, I think, was rather the darker. They claimed to be of the same race of people.
------

http://www.geocities.com/ourmelungeons/trial.html

I found the correct spelling on her daughter's marriage Certificate to John Aucote.

According the death certificate of her daughter Mildred Jewel Cook Caver, her full name was Nellie Gray Dykes. She was most likely named after a young cousin who died about 8 months before she was born.---

Cameron Herald – Thur., 21 August 1902
Death - Conflicting reports have been published concerning the death of Miss Nellie Gray, age 13, daughter of Dr. & Mrs. E. H. Gray at Rogers last week. R. F. Pool of Cameron went to Rogers the next day and from him we obtain the following statement which he secured from members of the family and is correct: It was late Tuesday afternoon when the distressing accident happened. Miss Nellie had been curling her mother’s hair and when Mrs. Gray attempted to blow out the lamp used, the flames went down, ignited the oil, causing the lamp to explode. Mrs. Gray’s clothes were set on fire and Miss Nellie in her efforts to aid her mother, caught fire and ran out into the yard, where the breeze fanned the flames, causing her to be frightfully burned. She died within a few hours, it being impossible to relieve her. She was buried in Rogers cemetery the afternoon of the next day. Mrs. Gray was painfully burned but will recover.---

James H. Dykes was the oldest son of George Washington "Glow" and Amanda (Dennis) Dykes

Mrs. E H. Gray above was Mary Elizabeth Dykes Graham Thweat Gray, sister to James H. Dykes

This Wm Dykes in LA was surety for my ancestor Thomas Wainwright in 1810 at his marriage. There are several other places where the Dykes connect with Wainwright, Singleton, Johnson families in the area. They evidently came in a large bunch, or bunches from SC in the very early 2800's. If you are still there, contact me and I will tell you what I know or suspect--although I am still trying to untangle some of these kinships. Jeanne

Appears in The Ravia Weekly News, Friday, 2 June 1911, Johnston County, Oklahoma

The preliminary trial of Dykes who was arrested last Thursday for the murder of the Indians near Tishomingo is still going on.

There were thirty six witnesses for examination and every thing is strong against Dykes, who at first confessed to the killing but afterwards laid it to two other parties. It seems from what we can gather that Dykes persuaded the Indians to accompany him and furnished whiskey to drink.
Appears in The Ravia Weekly News, Friday, 2 June 1911, Johnston County, Oklahoma

TWO INDIANS KILLED

Tishomingo, Oklahoma, May 27 - Lynn Dykes a well known cattleman has surrendered to the officers here for killing two Chickasaw Indians, Campbell Henderson and Rome Wolfe, at his ranch northwest of Tishomingo last Thursday night.

No date has yet been set for the preliminary hearing. Dykes refuses to make any statement other than admitting that he did it.

The two Indians were instantly killed. The weapon used by Dykes was a 45-calibre revolver. Near the body of Wolfe was found a 22 Winchester. The bodies of the Indians were buried yesterday an Indian cemetery near the scene of the killing.

Bob Standifer, who works at the Dykes ranch, has been arrested as an accessory to the murder and other arrests may be made.

Dykes and the two Indians are said to have been drinking. The trouble is believed to have originated over a lease which Dykes held from the two Indians on the land being used by him as a pasture. The Indians are said to have been endeavoring to have the lease to Dykes canceled, so they could lease the land to a mining company.

Dykes, who is about 38 years of age, has a good reputation here and he has many friends in this part of the county.
