Hi Megan,
My ggrandfather was Richard Eddy born 1871, he was a Gold Miner from St Just Cornwall, unfortunately I don't have proof that he was in SA..except family gossip....his father was also a Richard Eddy. He married a Cornish lady in 1898 and they had a son Richard Eddy b 1899. He does not appear on our UK census in 1901, he must have come home in 1902 as his wife got pregnant again, but he is deceased by March 1902 when his daughter Doris was born. I don't have access to SA records to find out if he died in SA though.
I do know of another family where many sons worked in SA, the parents were Richard Eddy and Sarah Trembath.
The brothers were: Richard (died 1902 Trewellard, St Just), William T , Thomas and James, and I believe they worked in a place called Germanstone, does that name fit with your family?. When their mother Sarah died in 1907, both James and Thomas were still in SA.
I believed this family to be mine at first, but it looks like Richard was single from his Will, where he left everything to his mum and siblings, no wife or children mentioned.
If this rings any bells I will try and put you in contact with a descendant of this family.
