My great-grandmother, Mary
Maude Eddy, was born 17 Aug 1874 in
Tennessee. Much of the information I have on her is vague and suspect because she was adopted, but the family says that
Eddy was her actual surname. She was raised probably in
Union County but possibly
Anderson County, and I believe that the family who raised her was named
Stooksbury, but I am not positive about that. She may have been born in New Market,
Jefferson County, and her mother may have been a St. John. I have not been able to do any research into this information (waiting for those
Tennessee marriage records to come online, and I live far from
Tennessee.) She had a brother named Lewis
Mallaby (with different spellings in various records.) It's not clear to me if that surname came from his adoptive family or his birth parents, but I think it was from his adoptive family. Mary married Joseph
Paris Whitton in Maynardville,
Union County, TN on 30 April 1892. They lived in
Anderson County and later
Knox County,
Tennessee. I have information on their children which I'm happy to share. I have her death certificate, but it does not have her parents' names. If anyone has her in your tree, I would be very interested to find out any information or leads about her parents. The fact of her being adopted has obviously made this a difficult line to trace, but I thought I would give it a shot. Many thanks for any help.
