I hope this helps. Without seeing the census, I believe it's a good one for your family if first names, age, etc... match up. A lot of census records were taken by uneducated people and even educated ones would write down what they heard, and many names, first and last ones, were misspelled. I have seen countless examples. If everything else seems okay regarding location, ages, etc... is probably a good one. Just the census taker wasn't doing a good job. FYI, I am a cousin to Thomas Alva Edison the inventor, and if you are in that family and doing research, can go to my Rootsweb tree for Edison information at ( http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=bond_jens... ) amd is on Ancestry with pictures, etc...
I have been searching for family under my great grandfather's surname of Edison, however there also seems to be Hedison at some stage, are they the same? His parents are known as Hedison on one census and I have his parents as Edison in my family tree! Same first names, but slightly different surname

Help!

Edisons and Merrills?

I am a descendent of James Merrill and Huldah Edison. Huldah was the daughter of Adonijah Edison and Nancy Williams. John was raised "on Talbot street at Catfish creek" in Elgin County, Ontario and I found record of his father being named William. James & Huldah had a son named John who was born in London, Ontario. It appears that James moved to the U.S. with the Edisons (they seem to have lived in the same places), but Huldah was buried in Elgin, Ontario just a year later. John remarried and moved to Iowa, but I have found evidence that he tried to reclaim land he left behind in Ontario. My Grandmother left behind some notes where she speaks of "Ma Edison" visiting her in Iowa. I am looking for any information on connections between the two families, as well as whether there is any further information on the history of the Merrills in Canada.

Thanks!!

Brian

I'm a Black Edison living in Baltimore, MD. I don't know too much about my Edison family origins because it's shrouded in ethnic mystery and different levels of apathy to historical records. I do know that my father (Enoch Edison) is one of a few siblings born to my grandfather (Earl S. Edison) who was one of at least three brothers (Donald Edison is one of them). My grandfather was born in Pennsylvania in 1930. And that's pretty much where the trail ends for my Edison family. My fathers sister (Peggy [Edison] Campos used to send us family letters that referenced to several first and second cousins of my own that I didn't even know about. All with the Edison name. Most of them were living in FL, NJ, NY, PA, MD and VA. I'm so excited about this research everyone is doing. It would have never occurred to me that so many Edisons hail from Alabama or Kentucky. Keep it coming

Eli

It's been awhile since I've checked this board. I'm from a family of black Edison's as well. We're primarily from NJ though we're all over the place now.

Originally my great-grandfather came here from Delhi, India (settling in NY) and changed his name from Abdul Rahman to John Edison. He then married a black (possibly West Indian) woman and they had 3 sons (Anthony, Clarence & Bernard). Great-grandfather, and eventually the 3 sons came to Plainfield NJ. Some family stayed in Plainfield, NJ, some were in Piscataway, NJ.

I guess even with the name change we are still black "Edisons".
sharon.wethly@us.army.mil

Emma R., wife of A.M. Edison

I am searching for family members of Emily R., wife of A.M. Edison who is buried in the Arvonia cemetery. She was born in 1852 and died in 1881.

I am working on a book for the Osage Co., KS Historical Society that will cover the people who are buried at the Arvonia Cemetery, located near Arvonia, KS. I would like to include birth-death-burial dates, parents & siblings, cause of death and any interesting family information; such as where they came from, military history, family lore, occupations, etc. I will NOT be listing any birth dates of living individuals and any information used will be the type that is easily accessible by anyone.

I have a list of burials that is a compiled list from two different sources but it only covers up through the early 1990’s. I hope to complete this list to include all burials up until now.

If you would like to add any information to your ancestor/family member’s listing, please contact me directly at newtonmac@msn.com . Please type “Arvonia Cemetery” in the subject line so I don’t miss your email. With 800+ burials, I cannot list all the names here so I’m listing the surnames. If you have any questions, I’ll be happy to help. Keep in mind that most of the ladies are buried under their married names. If you’re not sure if your family member is buried in Arvonia, contact me and I’ll check for you.

Albert, Angles, Antrim, Atchison, Austin, Hart, Bailey, Barnett, Barr, Bebb, Behrendt, Benson, Blake, Bontz, Booth, Boring, Bosley, Botkin, Boyce, Briggs, Brower, Bugg, Campbell, Chambers, Clark, Clotfelter, Cosley, Cottrell, Cowden, Crabtree, Crippen, Davies, Davis, Decker, Dobson, Edison, Edwards, Elishan, Ellis, Evans, Felton, Ferguson, Frye, Funston, Gavin, Goodwin, Graham, Gray, Griffith, Griffiths, Hamman, Harris, Harvey, Hebbe, Henry, Herr/Haerr, Hilding, Hillis, Holmquist, Hooper, Hotchkiss, Hughes, Humphreys, Jenkins, Jennings, Jensen, Jeremy, Jernigan, Jessee, Jones, Kesler, King, Kirk, Knight, Larson, Leach, Lewis, Lloyd, Lowman, Maloney, Marker, Mays, Metzger, Miller, Mochamer, Monfort, Moore, Morgan, Morris, Moses, Near, Nesbitt, Newlee, Newman, Newton, Ormsby, Owens, Padgett, Parker, Parrey, Parry, Peterson, Pettay, Phillips, Pickens, Powell, Prentice, Price, Protheroe, Rees, Reynolds, Rich, Richards, Roberts, Robinson, Rouland, Rumph, Samuel, Sanderson, Schedel, Shepard, Shirley, Sloan, Small, Smith, Southworth, Spillman, Standiferd, Stephens, Sterrett, Still, Tankersley, Terril, Terrion, Thomas, Thompson, Trueblood, Umdenstock, Walker, Wallace, Ward, Watkins, Whaner, Whildin, White, Williams, Williamson, Wilson, Witherspoon, Woodin

Anita (Newton) McKinney
Colorado Springs, CO
Hi Leo, there is a Realtor in Vienna, Elgen Co., Ont., Canada. He has kept track of all the EDISONS and is able to tell you more about them than you may want to know. I don't recall his name, however, it''s a small town and I'm sure he is the only Realtor there. I stopped at a general store to inquier, and when he heard me say EDISON he followed me to the car and took me to his house and we talked EDISON all day.

Mathew: For a start, the best way to learn
about the Edison family if you are unfamiliar
with the background, is to go to any local
library and look up Thomas Alva Edison. There
you will find numerous books and articles
about your famous ancestor. As for my info,
it is mostly family Canadian history, and may
not be exactly what you are looking for.
Happy Hunting! Ann

Canadian Edison

Debbie: Exciting to see your posting. I
too am originally from Southwestern Ont.,
Aylmer to be exact. My source of information
is from my late father Dr. George Edward
Harrison. I have in my possesion a typed man-
uscript written in 1973 by Lyal Tait. Lyal
lived in Vienna for a time in an old farm-
house and remembers the Edison homestead.
Early in the 1940's he did the wiring of the
homestead for electricity. He states: "For a
number of years I have wanted to record
the story of the Edison family in Can. With
the help of Nora Edison Coombs, the only
surviving member of the Edisons in Vienna,
other relatives and what scattered informa-
tion is available, my wishes have been made
possible. Mr. Willis Weaver, a great-great-
grandson on John Edison, allowed me to use
several old family scrapbooks." (End of quote)
Debbie: this typed copy of the manuscript is
some 56 pages in length. Do you have it?
Would this be of interest to you. It is
definately too long to type out, but I may
be able to make a copy and send it along to
you if this is information that you seek.
My relationship to the Edisons is through
Adonia Edison, son of John Edison. He was
the uncle of Judge Rufus Freeman Harrison,
the son-in-law of Amos Williams, builder
of the Harrison House in Roseland NJ USA. I
have been doing the Harrison geneology for
about a year now and have been quite success-
ful in tracing my fathers line to the present
day. This manuscript was in my possession and
I would be happy to share it. I presently
live about 1 1/2 hours from Aylmer.

I anticipate your reply. Please feel free to
e-mail me directly. Ann
