Hello June,
If your ESSEX ancestors were from England, I would be very happy to hear about them.
Ours were from Market Harborough and before that Canterbury.
I would be happy to tell more to anybody with an interest in them.
Kind regards,
Linda

You have done well.
I have William Levi ESSEX born in Canterbury 5th Oct 1815.
His father was Levi and his father William. I have no dates or information for these two.
Good luck with your research.

Hi Linda

William Levi Essex b 1815 is in my tree - I believe he is my gg grandfather. From info I have, his daughter Elizabeth born 1850 married Charles Harris b 1855. Their daughter Esther Lucy Harris b 1896 married Samuel Fellowes (my grandparents) Another link is Selina Abigail Harris (Charles' sister) who married Joseph Essex (son of Wm Levi) in 1869. I am happy to share info. Regards Lynda

Linda and Lynda,

I have also been trying to trace my Essex family tree in England and just wondered whether you had any more information on William Essex who married Elizabeth Clay?

My initial research has centred around trying to find all the descendants of a Thomas Essex born in 1715/6 probably in the Colchester, Essex area. The family slowly moved to London and Birmingham, although I still have family in Essex. I've so far identified around 380 descendants including myself.

Thomas Essex (b 1715/6) had a number of children, one of which was William Essex born on 12 June 1743. He married a Hester Raynor on 10 November 1765 and they had a son called William. Unfortunately I have so far failed to find any more information on this William and what happenned to him. Could it be your William Essex? I fear not though.

I have been attempting to find Thomas's parents but no luck so far. This might then enable me to link up with other Essex families in England.

Any help/thoughts appreciated. Thanks

Chris Essex

Sorry it has taken so long to reply. I replied immediately to the list instead of the message board.
I have Sophia ESSEX born 25th Sept 1858 at Harborough, Leics
her parents were: William Levi ESSEX born 15th Oct 1815 at Canterbury, Kent.Died 4th Dec 1876 at Great Bowden, Leics
Esther SEAL born 6th May 1820 at Little Bowden, Northants. They were married at the Parochial Chapel, Market Harborough, Leicester, on March 8th 1840.Both made their mark in register.Witnesses Luke Fellows and Ann Richardson.

I think that the parents of William Levi ESSEX were:Levi born c.1778 at Coventry, Warwicks. and unknown Elizabeth. I think that Elizabeth died and Levi then married Ann WESTBROOK.

I think that the parents of Levi were: William ESSEX and Elisabeth CLAY. They were married 11th July 1774 at Wolvey, Warwicks.

I had not come across your Elizabeth born 1850, until now.
I have ; Edward 1852; James 1854;George 1856;Sophia born 1858; Ann born 1860. Of course as William and Esther were married in 1840 it is reasonable to think that they had some children before Edward. I need to look for the family in the 1841 census and onwards.

Does this fit in with your tree?

Kind regards,
Linda

Linda,

Thanks for replying, but I'm afraid based on the information you have provided I can't see a link at this stage with my Essex family. There are a lot of Essex family members around Coventry, but I haven't yet found a link.

Chris

Thanks for your tree details.

They do fit in with my tree! The Essex family are mainly on my dad’s mother’s side (Harris). The witness Luke Fellows at the marriage of William Levi & Esther Seal is my gg grandfather on my dad’s father’s side!

I have 11 children to date for William Essex and Esther Seal:
Maria Ann born about 1840. Christened 20 September 1842 Mkt Harborough aged 2 (PRs)
James about 1844. Christened 18 Aug 1844 MH (PRs)
William Essex born abt 1845; christened January 16, 1845 MH (PRs) (on 1901 census his birth place was Canterbury) – married Fanny Draper in 1875. Died 1910
Joseph born 1847; Christened September 17, 1848 MH (PRs) – married Selina Abigail Harris (my great aunt) in 1869. Died 1925
Elizabeth born 1850; christened Mary Elizabeth 14 Jul 1850 MH. Birth registered at GRO as Elizabeth and "Mary" was not used again apart from on her marriage to Charles Harris in 1873 (my g grandparents). Their dau Esther Lucy married Samuel Fellowes. Elizabeth died 1905
Edward 1852; christened June 20, 1852 MH (PRs) – married Ellen Ellam 1860
James 1854; christened August 6, 1854 MH (PRs) (not with family on 1861 census) Possibly died Apr - Jun Q MH 1849 or Oct - Dec Q MH 1850
George 1856; christened July 20, 1856 MH (igi) possibly died Jul – Sep Q 1857
Sophia born 1858; christened November 14, 1858 MH (PRs)
Ann born 1860; christened December 9, 1860 MH (igi)
George 1874; christened February 14, 1864 MH (PRs)

Levi and Ann Westbrook were both widowed when they married on 29 June 1820 (PRs)
Levi and Ann’s children:
Samuel abt 1820 married Hannah (known as Ann) Perkins 1841 MH (PRs) (her sister Harriet married my gg grandfather Luke Fellowes!)
Ann 1824; christened 29 Feb 1824 MH (PRs)

Thanks very much for the info on the possible parents of Levi – I had nothing earlier than him. Coventry and Wolvey are quite close to where I live so I will be looking into it soon!

Regards
Lynda

I seem to fit into the family tree my gggrandfather was William Essex born 1845 who married Fanny Draper.

I also have Sophia Essex 1858 marrying a Henry Turner and Ann 1860 marrying a John William Bentley Neal.
George 1864 seems a sad tale he married a Frances Jane Tearle lived in India and had 3 children both he and Frances died in 1897 and the children were sent home to England, the 1901 census has the eldest two living with Edward 1852 and the youngest with Joseph 1847.

Levi born Coventry 1778/9 is interesting, in 1804 he joined Royal Horse Artillery as a driver he served in the RHA until 1816 when army numbers were reduced following the final defeat of Napoleon. His discharge papers note he served at Waterloo and was credited with an extra two years army service for this. He was granted a pension of 5 pence per day which in 1830 was increased to one shilling. This may indicate that he was wounded nevertheless he lived to a good age. The description in the discharge papers is 5ft 5 3/4 inches brown hair, grey eyes sallow complexion.

Further details are on the PICK family tree

Regards Rita
