I am looking for information on a Jospeh Essex living in Hardin County or Larue County KY @1833. His son Issac was married in 1833 and Joseph gave consent. I believe Joseph may have come from Virginia since I have found Census records that list Issac, Thomas, William, and James all @ 2 years apart as heads of households born in Virgina. MUSCATINE, Iowa - Edith Essex, 88, of Muscatine, died Wednesday, May 18, 2005, at her home.

The Rev. Ted Landers will officiate the services. Casket bearers are John Crook Jr., Ace Morris, Earl McGill, Rick McGill, Gerald Essex and Brian Yerington. Honorary casket bearer is Susan Morris.
Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.

Edith Essex was born on June 17, 1916, in Grandview, the daughter of John Lee and Jesse Belle Anthony McGill. She married Robert L. (Bob) Essex on March 2, 1935, in Muscatine. He preceded her in death.

She worked at H.J. Heinz and the Ceylon Plant in Muscatine.

Survivors include one son, Robert John Essex and special friend, Pam, of Tumwater, Washington; two daughters, Patricia Jean Duffield and husband, Myles, of Clovis, New Mexico, and Karen Lee Crook and husband, John, of Muscatine; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister and three brothers.

It's a wonderful clear photo of a woman with a high collared black dress wearing a pin at her neck and a locket hanging down from the collar. She is standing by a tapestry tablecloth. This may be Amelia b.1867 in IL and John M. Cox in the 1900 Census for Denver, Arapahoe County, Colorado. I would like to reunite this photo with a family member. Hello everyone! I am looking for some help on Thomas J. Essex and Catherine Bennett family. Thomas was born around 1857 and died on 18 Sep 1928 (Ohio Death Index). He married Catherine Bennett on 3 Mar 1883 (Ohio Marriages, 1803-1900). She was the daughter of William T. Bennett and Mary S. Cummings. I have seen where she died in 1948 but have not found proof of this.

They were the parents of 9 children:

Misc. Info:

1. Belva-- I have seen a researcher have her death date as 1952 but there is no source given or place given. Not sure if she married or not.
2. Verda- The same researcher has given her death date and place as 3 Jan 1971 in Fort Wayne, Allen, Indiana and buried 6 Jan 1971 in Live Oak Cemetery in Paulding County, Ohio. I have requested an obit but again not sure if she got married so not sure if lookup volunteer can find an obit.
3. Benjamin- According to census records he was married to Gertrude Eva ? (last name unknown). He was living up in Massachusetts in the 1920 census and in Pennsylvania in the 1930 census. The fellow researcher has his death date as 22 Nov 1964 but no place or source is given.
4. Reed- Married to a Jean (last name unknown).
5. John W. - Killed in the service on 11 Nov 1918. He enlisted on 22 Jul 1918.
6. Howard T…. he was living with a brother in the 1930 census. Not sure if he ever married. He enlisted in the service on 2 Oct 1918 and honorable discharge on 13 Dec 1918. He graduated high school in 1916 from Paulding High School. (Information found on Paulding County, Ohio rootsweb site)
7. Carl was married to Loullie (last name unknown and name is spelled as it was on the census record). I have requested an obit so hopefully someone can help me. Carl graduated high school in 1918 from Paulding High School. According to his draft card, Carl was a school teacher.
8. Harl D. was twin of Carl. He was married to an Iva C. (last name unknown). I have seen a death date as 9 Jul 1930 but also found on the Allen County, Indiana that his obituary date was 9 Jul 1930 so maybe that was an evening paper and he died early morning on the 9th? Need to see if I can find a volunteer to get the obit. Harl also graduated in 1918 from Paulding high school. According to his draft card, Harl was a school teacher.
9. I really known nothing about Elmer. I do know that he was 9 months old in the 1910 census. I am thinking he was born around Jul 1909. He is buried at Live Oak Cemetery in Paulding County. I am not sure why he died as a child.

I am looking for any confirmed birth dates, death dates, marriages, burials etc that anyone can help me with.

Trying to locate a copy of a manuscript or pages of "Essex Genealogy" by George A. Essex. Was done in 1900 with certification notarized 1909 in Rogers Co. OK. Library of Congress doesn't have any record, may not have been published nationally.

Family included in this manuscript is Dr. Thomas Essex from London, Eng. came to US in 1775, Married to Margaret Parks b. 1/21/1752. They had 3 children: Phillip, Christina/Christiana, and Charity.
1)Capt. Phillip Essex born in W. VA 8/1775 d. 1866. mar. Hannah Essex. Had 11 children. Also lived in KY, and Hancock Co. OH. Was in War of 1812.
2) Christina/Christiana Essex married John G. Hull son of Samuel Hull b. 1735 MD and Martha Glover.
3) Charity Essex

Would like to find more info on the dau. Charity Essex to confirm or disprove my line. If you have a copy of the Essex Gen. could you please do a lookup for me?

There is a Lucy Essex, b. abt. 1846 in Louisiana in the 1900 Galveston, Texas census.

I've been researching the 1900 Galveston Hurricane and this census was taken about three months before the Hurricane hit. Hopefully this information will be of help to others who are also researching the victims and survivors of this Hurricane.

Hi-I am looking for information on my grandfather, Simon Essex. The trick is that he was born Simon Reynolds and was adopted as an older child by an Essex family and later took their name and kept it. He was born August 17, 1906, in Jellico, Tennessee. I also know that he was the youngest of 13 children but what I am unsure about it if they also took the Essex name as well. If this sounds familiar to anyone, I would love to know. I am most interested in finding out information concerning Thomas WILLIAMS and Mary TEWELL, George Richard WILLIAMS and Katie ESSEX, as well as Roy Thomas WILLIAMS.

I have come across information concerning a Thomas WILLIAMS living in Loogootee, IN that enlisted on August 14, 1862 and served in the Civil War as a Musician until he mustered out at Salisbury, NC on 6-22-1865. I don't know if this is MY Thomas and would like to find out if he is.

Howdy! I'm looking for any info on my great-great-great-great grandfather Josiah Essex, who was born in the District of Columbia in 1803. According to the 1880 census, his father was born in England, and his mother was born in Maryland. Josiah and Ruth had several children in DC: Harrison, Josiah, Laura, Emma, Taylor, and John T., who was my great-great-grandfather. John T. and Margaret Bain of Scotland had my great-great grandfather William T., who was raised in DC by his Scottish grandparents (Margaret died in child-birth). William T. was raised Catholic, as have the succeeding generations. Any other offspring of this DC branch?!

I am looking for the parents of Earl ESSEX born 4 Apr 1794 in New York State, and died 27 Jul 1850 in Pike township, Fulton county, Ohio.

His wife, Betsey, was born 3 Oct 1797 in New York and died 11 Oct 1850 Pike, Fulton, Ohio.

Earl with wife and 6 children appears on the 1840 census in Westford, Otsego, New York. The 1850 census found the family in Pike, Fulton, Ohio.

Earl and Betsey's children were John B., James W., Selina Jane, George Washington and Lyman H.

This is an attempt to help a lady find her brother- any answers can be sent to me, directly or though this board

William (Billy) Ronald Essex born in 1932- left his home
( after an argument ) in Pomona, CA Jan or Feb 1953. he was last seen in April 1953 in Arkansas going back to CA.

A search of the SSDI does not reveal anything. he is now 70 yearrs old and his older sister is desperately searching for any clue.

We would greatly appreciate any one searching their local phone books, city directories, asking questions even if it isn't your family of Essex {surname}

we believe that he obtained a second SS number, the first one last was used at employment in 1954- so we know he did go back to CA- nothing after that...

He could have married and had a family- no one knows-

4 Essex Brothers

Hi there. I have just recently begun to research my family history and I have gotten stuck on the Essexes. My dad tells me that the family story he has always heard is that 4 Essex brothers came from England and settled in Missouri. After that, they spread out throughout the country. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?
I have our Essex line through the 1870 birth (in Missouri?) of Jesse Paul Essex, but that is as far back as I can get. I know his father was named Jesse Peter, but I have not found any records on Jesse Peter or his family. Any help that you all can give (and/or advice for a novice!) would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to trace back the family tree. Frances G. was my ggm on my mother's side. She was married to John Q. Daugherty and had four children...Jo June, Elaine, Doris Nell, and John Q. Jr. I haven't found anything on this particular family (yet) before the 1930 census, which shows them as living in Tulsa, OK.

My 2nd great grandmother Anna Essex married Riley German in Franklin Co. OH on July 28, 1825. 1860 and 1870 Census records for Clarke Co. IA indicates she was born in OH between 1804 and 1808. She died after 1870 in IA. In the late 1820’s or early 1830’s she and Riley moved from OH to Peoria Co. IL. In the mid 1840’s they then moved to Iowa. Any information regarding her parents, brothers or sisters would be greatly appreciated. Any thought as to leads to pursue?

I have concluded she is not the daughter Nathan Essex and Elizabeth Hardesty nor Thomas Essex and Elizabeth Bowen Brown.

Possibly born in Davisville area. Once owned a farm somewhere in Exeter area in or around the 1950-s. Handed down to a distant cousin from what I have been told. Also had a brother Clarence who had seven daughters. Maybe Coventry area..

Graveside services for John Riley Essex, 64, Jacksonville, will be at 5 p.m. Sunday in Jarratt Cemetery with the Rev. Randle Ford officiating, under direction of Thompson Funeral Home of Jacksonville.

Mr. Essex died Saturday at his home.

He was born in Iowa, had lived in Jacksonville 20 years, was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Baptist church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3984.

Mrs. Exira Essex, the wife of Joseph Essex of Bloomington township passed away at her home about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon as the result of a protracted illness. Mrs. Essex underwent an operation in December and her condition had been considered serious since that time.

Mrs. Essex was born in Rock Island county, Illinois, and was 64 years of age on March 12. She was a resident of Muscatine county for 15 years or more and was well and favorably know to many residents. She was a member of the Muscatine branch of the Fraternal Bankers Reserve.

The deceased is survived by her husband and four children, Fred Essex of Tender, Neb., Mrs. Gertrude Malone, Mrs. Adda Bridges and James Essex of Bloomington township.

The funeral is announced to be held from Spangler's Chapel at 10 o'clock at 10 o'clock Saturday morning, interment to take place at the Essex cemetery in Illinois, which is about five miles from this city.
Notes, she died April 15, 1915.
On her m/cer in Muscatine IA said she was the daughter of Mary J. Asa and David Hood.
I firmly believe that Mary's name was Nancy Jane Asa.

I have a copy of her m/record and it had her name spelt Exeina B. Hood and Joseph Essex.

Robert L. "Bob" Essex, 82, of 800 Wicher St. died Tuesday evening, Dec. 8, 1992 at Bethesda Care Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home, the Rev. Robert Ahlstrom chaplain at Lutheran Homes will officiate, Pallbearers will be Rick Duffield, Steven Duffield, Bradley Duffield, Gregory Duffield, Gerald Essex and Bobby Delveau. Honorary pallbearers will be John Crook Jr., Leo Yerington, Jack Delveau, Rick McGill, Earl McGill and Chuck McGill. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer society.

Mr. Essex was born Nov. 8, 1910 in Muscatine, a son of Lee and Pearl Harker Essex. He married Edith McGill on March 2, 1935 in Muscatine.

Survivors include his wife Edith a son Robert John Essex of Olympia Washington, two daughters Patricia Jean Duffield of Clovis NM, and Karen Lee Crook of Muscatine, 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister Viola TeStrake and 2 brothers Edward and Hilbert.

He was a former member of the Moose Lodge, where he was a member of the award winning debate team.

He worked at Grain Processing Corporation for 27 years before retiring. He then worked for Krieger
Motors for 11 years.

He enjoyed fishing, traveling and his grandchildren.

Monday after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Sweetland Methodist church. The Rev. Leland Enke assisted by the Rev. Walter Sieck, Sigourney will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

The body will be taken from the George M. Wittich funeral home to the church at noon on Thursday.

The daughter of Roy and Carrie Meyers Cochran, Mrs. Essex was born Jan. 20, 1914, in Lake township. She resided in the area all of her life.

Dec. 12, 1931 she was married at Morrison Illinois to Ralph L. Essex. She was a member of the Sweetland Methodist church and a charter member of the Women's Society for Christian Service.

Surviving are her husband, one son Melvin of Atbdrnett, two daughters Mrs. Beverly Miller of
Davenport and Mrs. Albert Watson of Cedar Rapids, two brothers Loran and Robert Cochran of Muscatine, four sisters Mrs. Syphrit, Mrs. Arthur LaRue, Mrs. Louis Gray and Mrs. Hubert Mathes all of Muscatine and 11 grandchildren. Her parents, two brothers and one sister are dead.

Ralph L. Essex 57, route 1, Wilton, collapsed while driving his car in
Bettendorf, Monday and was pronounced dead at St. Like's hospital at
12:40 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the
Sweetland Methodist Church. The Revs. Leland Enke and Walter Sieck will
officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

Friends may call at the George M. Wittich funeral home until Thursday morning, when the
body will be removed to the Sweetland church.

Mr. Essex was driving south on 14th street in Bettendorf and was attempting a turn into Grant
street when he collapsed. The car stopped after crossing a vacant lot
and striking a garage at 1116 14th street.

The son of James E. and Sarah A. Armstrong Essex, he was born Jan. 13, 1908 in Muscatine. He
was a farmer, a member of the Farm Bureau and was treasurer of the Sweetland church for a number of years.

He was Married Dec. 12, 1931 at Morrison Illinois to Dorthy L. Cochran. His wife father one brother and
one sister are dead. Surviving are a son Melvin R. Essex of Coggon Iowa, two daughters Mrs. Larry (Beverly) Hoeck of Davenport, and Mrs. Albert (Marilyn) Watson of Cedar Rapids, one brother Clyde E. Essex of Atalissa, two sisters Mrs. Frank E. Anson Sr. of Muscatine, and Mrs. P. Lucille Gilmore of Muscatine, and his mother Mrs. Sarah Essex of Muscatine and 11 grandchildren.

R. Leonard officiating.

Born March 25, 1902 in Colona, she was the daughter of Alex and Pluma Flood. She married Harold Essex in 1920 in Muscatine.

Surviving are three daughters Mrs. Vivian Bloomer and Mrs. Betty Smith both of Muscatine, and Mrs. Hazel Jaynes of Glenarm Illinois, six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her husband, parents and five sisters.

Visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in
Memorial Park cemetery.

Harold V. Essex 68, 301 1/2 E. Second Street died this morning at 5:15
at the Hershey Convalescent home after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held at the George Wittich Funeral Home. Rev. J. Paul
Scevens will officiate and burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.
Visitation will start Tuesday noon.

Born April 5, 1901 at Muscatine, he was the son of Timothy and Grace Baker Essex and was a life resident of Muscatine.

Mr. Essex was a member of the Moose Lodge and formerly
operated the Blue Eagle tavern. He was divorced.

Survivors include three daughters Mrs. Archie (Vivian) Bloomer, Mrs. Howard (Betty) Smith
of Muscatine, Mrs. Robert (Hazel) Jaynes of Glenarm Illinois, and one
sister Mrs. Hazel Stebbins of Davenport. Also six grandchildren and two
great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

The daughter of William and Margaret Arnold she was born Aug. 31, 1915 in Atalissa.

Her marriage to Clyde Essex took place on July 23, 1933. She had worked at Spurgeons in Muscatine for many years.

Moines, Wendell of Bettendorf and William of Muscatine, two daughters
Mrs. Darlene Adams of Muscatine, and Mrs. Ronald (Deanna) Templeman of
Arvada Colorado. 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, two
brothers George Arnold of Evansville Wisconsin, and Virgil Arnold of
Muscatine, and one sister Mrs. Gretchen Smith of Solon.

In the UK Census of 1881, a listing appears that lists a George Essex as the husband of Mary Ann Yates who was the older sister of my grandfather James Yates. They resided in Bloxwich, Walsall, England. George and Mary Ann had at least one son, Benjamin who had at least one son Bernard who still lives in Walsall, a daughter Winifred also from Walsall. She is survived by her husband F. M. Brewer; five children, Rufus F., Archie J., Donald L.,
Walter A., and William A. Brewer, all of Muscatine county; three brothers E. T. and William Essex, both of Rock Island county, O. S. Terry of Muscatine.

The body is at the George Wittich Funeral Home, 210 Cedar street, and will remain there for funeral services to be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Ira Hawley, pastor of United Brethren church. Burial will be in the Essex cemetery in Illinois.

This was around 1881 onwards (not sure for how long yet).

My GGrandfather was Horatio James Garrad and they live in both places as did other parts of the family of butchers

Also interested in the Thorogood connection. They all seem to have originated from Stebbings in Essex.

Death Summons Mrs. Hendricks, 79, of Nichols.
Nichols- Mrs. Clarence Hendricks 79, a resident here for the past 50
years, died late Saturday night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Anna
McIntyre at Cedar Valley.
Mrs. Hendricks whose maiden name was Elizabeth Essex, was born Oct.
30, 1858 in Rock Island county, ILL. On Jan. 20, 1875 she married
Clarence Hendricks in Rock Island county, ILL, and the couple moved here
soon afterward. She was a member of the Christian church here.
Surviving are four children, Mrs. Anna McIntyre of Cedar Valley,
Leonard H. Hendricks of West Liberty, Mrs. Jennie Druse of Birmingham,
IA, and Ray Hendricks Of Tucson, Arizona.
The body is at the Kirchner Funeral home here where it will remain
until time for the funeral services on Tuesday. The Rev. Mina Hargis
will be in charge of services, and burial will be at the Nichols
cemetery.

Mrs. C. Hendricks Rites Observed
Nichols-Funeral Services for Mrs. Clarence Hendricks were held Tuesday at 2 p. m. at the Christian church, with the Rev. Mina Hargis in charge.

Edna Kirchner, Marie Borgstadt and Ora Nichols sang "Jesus Saviour Pilot Me," and Anna Rosenfield sang "sometime We'll Understand." The four women sang, "In the Garden."

Pallbearers were Will Schmitt, Bert Metcalf, Ben Nichols, Frank Hummel, Earl Trautman and Ray Swickard. Flower girls were Mary Adams, Emma Kirchner, Ada Morris and Dora Nichols.

Burial was in the Nichols cemetery.

Those attending from out-of-town were Mrs. James Troxel and Joseph Essex, sister and brother of Mrs. Hendricks, from Muscatine, Ray Hendricks of Tucson, Ariz., and the Rev. Mr. Druse of Birmingham, Iowa.

George Essex

Funeral services for George William Essex who died Monday were conducted
at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Meyers Funeral Home by the Rev. Ira Hawley,
pastor of the United Brethren church. Burial was in the Essex cemetery
in Illinois.

Mr. Essex was born in Rock Island County Illinois April
22, 1949 the eldest child of James and Elizabeth Essex. He married
Susan Troxel in 1867 and a son and a daughter were born to them.
Timothy who died about a year ago and the daughter who died many years
ago. Mrs. Essex also preceded him in death.

Mr. Essex was a painter and paper hanger by trade and during the past 10 years had
manufactured three violins by hand. He made his home at
322 1/2 East Second street for more than 20 years. About four years ago
his health failed and he went to make his home with his nephew J. W.
Lewis. About a year ago he went to the county home and resided there
until his death.

Surviving are one brother Joseph Essex and two sisters
Mrs. James Troxel of Muscatine and Mrs. Clarence Hendrex of Nichols.
Three grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive.

Mrs. Susan Esex 81 years old, died at the home of her son, 1410 Nebraska
street last evening at 8 o'clock. She had been ill for about three
months, death being due to heart trouble and senility. She had been a
resident of South Muscatine for about a year, coming here with her son
from Illinois City.

The body will be taken to her former home tomorrow
morning, where the funeral will take place in the afternoon. It was her
last request that she be buried in her own plot in Illinois City.

Mrs. Esex was born in Indiana in 1830. Her husband died from wounds received
in the civil war while fighting with a union regiment.

She leaves an only child to survive her; John Crabtree at whose home she succumbed. A
brother Charles Crabtree, resides in Illinois City and a sister Mrs.
Ellen Simmons of Andalusia Illinois.

Clyde Essex

West Liberty- Clyde Essex 79, West Liberty died Suddenly Tuesday morning after being admitted to Muscatine General Hospital following a heart attack.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Snider Funeral
Home. The Rev. Frank Greenwood will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday afternoon and evening.

The son of James E. and Edna Armstrong Essex he was born April 8, 1906 in Muscatine County.

He married Margaret Arnold on July 23, 1933. She
died in 1983. Mr. Essex had worked as an auto mechanic most of his life and had recently owned and operated Essex Greenhouse in West Liberty.

Survivors include three sons, Duane of Des Moines, Wendell of Bettendorf, and William of Muscatine, two daughters Mrs. Darlene Adams of Muscatine and Mrs. Deanna Templeman of Arvada Colorado, 15 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Mrs. W. S. Elliott a long time resident of Muscatine, died at 11:40 o'clock Friday night, following an extended illness at her home 610 Oak street, Cancer of the stomach caused her death. She was 69 years old.

Mrs. Elliott, formerly Miss Mathilda Frances Davidson, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, July 6, 1852..In 1870 she married Wiley Essex, to whom seven children were born, five of whom survive. In 1896 she married Silas Terry, who died twenty-two years ago. She married W. S. Elliott in 1903, whose death occurred three years ago.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Sarah Brewer of Muscatine and five sons, Elige, James and Leon Essex of this city, William Essex of Davenport and Oliver Terry of Muscatine.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the home. The Rev. George Blagg will officiate. Burial will be made in Greenwood cemetery.

The deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Sarah Brewer of Muscatine; five sons, Elige, James and Leon Essex of this city, William Essex of Davenport, and Oliver Terry of Muscatine, and one brother, George B. Davidson of Muscatine Island.

I am looking for the parents of William F. Essex born about 1840 in Boone Co., Indiana. - on census records its shows him at 40 years of age in 1880. He married Marie E \\ I don't know last name and they had three children that I know of Cora(abt 1873), Della(abt 1875) and their is a Perry also listed under a different name of Essex; which he later assumed.

I am assuming that he may be part of the Jesse Essex, Sr, family who migrated to that area about 1832(Hamilton/Boone Co.)

Their are a few possibilities:
Jesse Essex, Sr.
John Essex(Jesse's son)
William Essex(Jesse's son)

I can't seem to find his parents on the 1850 census records in the state of Indiana.

William was living in Boone Co., Eagle twp in 1880 and apparently the William I mentioned above was living nearby.

I am currently researching the Jesse Essex Sr. Line.

Also looking for descendants of James Essex, born 11/19/1848 in Chesterton, Cambridge, England. Father Phillip, born c 1810 and Mother Rebecca born 8/16/1809. Both born in Cambridgeshire, England. James and his Mother moved to Canada in 1872 and James subsequently moved to Detroit, Michigan area at probably the same time as Richard noted above.

It states he was a farm hand and boardedwith a William Card in North Kingstown.
