I saw your post at and am also trying to find out more about the Fiddes family. Here's about half of what I have, I cut it off at my great-grandfather's birth since a lot of people past him are still around (he's Melvin Fiddes). I hope this helps, because I think one of the Alexanders is yours. Let me know. My grandmother is a Fiddes and her cousin made a trip to Scotland in 1978, gathering a lot of wonderful information. The Fiddeses are an ancient Aberdeen family of Pictish origin (bef. the year 1100). We have 4 Fiddes tartan designs, 2 clan (source: MacKinlay Book of 18thC Setts), 1 family (source: Wilson's of Bannockburn 1800), 1 artifact (source: Kelvingrove Museum). Examples of all can be found at www.tartans.scotland.net. They can also make the fabric, but it is expensive. The colors of the tartans are a red, blue, and green plaid.

There is a Fiddes Castle in Aberdeen, Scotland, a 16th century L-shaped with tower houses, featuring a main block and one wing. Unknown how much is still standing.

Cullykhan Bay is a popular sandy bay to the west of Pennan. On a promontory above the bay lie the remains of the Bronze Age Fort Fiddes which has been described as the earliest industrial site in Europe. Archaeologists have found beads which suggest that the fort traded with continental Europe as far back as 700 B.C. From Fort Fiddes one has spectacular views over the sheer cliff face of Lion Head and the deep cliff side gash of Hell's Lum which leads to a sea tunnel drilled through solid rock. Cullykhan Bay is signposted off the B9031 and there is a car park with footpaths to the beach and the fort. There is also a rougher path, requiring care, to Hell's Lum.
