Adam / Adelaide Fiddis in NYC

Looking for the family of Adelaide Fiddis born on Nov 9, 1894 to Adam Fiddis and Elizabeth o' Reilly. Adam's birthdate may be 1847 Ireland and Elizabeth 1863, according to census had children Loretta Fiddis Reordan 1883, Seceila (Ceceila)b. 1893, Adelaide, and Frances b. 1897.
My great gr Adelaide died in 1920 when my grandmother Dorothy was only 2 and lost contact with that side of her family. any info appreciated thanks

I am looking for information on this family. I have Andrew (son of Andrew and Isabel Merchant Fiddes) Christened 17 Feb 1800, Banchory, Devenick, Kincardine, Scotland. He was married to Margaret Irvine b about 1796. I have no information on her. They were married 23 June 1825, Old Marchar, Aberdeen, Scotland. They had 7 children that I know of... Elizabeth b. 1825, James b. 1826, Alexander b. 1828, Joseph b. 1834, Margaret b. 1831, Mary b. 1832, and Robert b. 1836. They were all christened at Saint Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland.

I found them on the 1841 Scotland census and I might have them on a New York passenger list. I'm hoping someone might be researching this family too!

The father of this William Fiddes (Fiddis) was George Fiddes. William's birth is listed in the Old Parish Register as "William, son of George Fiddes and his wife Mary Thomson" He had a brother Alexander and sisters Margaret,Jane and Isabella. In the 1851 census for Aboyne George is listed as "head of house, widower, aged 55, farmer of 10 acres, 3 acres moor, born Kincardine, Aberdeenshire". George Fiddes' death certificate also lists his occupation as a retired farmer.

I am a great granddaughter of the William Fiddes who married Helen Minty. My grandmother, Helen Jemima Fiddes, collected family history information from her parents and the family Bible before she was married in 1896. She used the nickname "Tilleycairn" when writing to the women's page of a local newspaper, and spoke to us often about this place her father loved but she had never seen. My mother and I were lucky enough to visit Scotland and see the farm.

I am a great granddaughter of William Fiddes and Helen Minty. My grandmother, Helen Jemima Fiddes, compiled a
family tree back in the 1950's with information she had gathered from her parents before she left home to get married in 1896. Her data has checked out as very accurate. I am wondering if you are a descendant of Lambert Fiddes, who moved to Australia. I don't remember
more about Lambert than that, as Grandma just spoke of having lost touch with him and his descendants.

I have a photograph of Helen Minty and William Fiddes with their children that was taken before 1896. The children are all grown, with Ida May looking to be about 16.

As to what became of Theodore Minty: he spent his final years with Helen and William Fiddes. Grandma said she
"remembered him fine". She would have been about 13 when he died, and she says that she thought it was awful that "they put him in that big hole". He is buried in a small rural cemetery at Malcolm in Brant Township, Bruce County Ontario Canada. Malcolm never grew as a community, and I am not sure it would even show on a map now. I have
seen the cemetery, which is surrounded by a fence with the
name of the cemetery, but all the stones have been removed. They were probably unreadable. Theodore's youngest son, Alexander, died when he was 14 and is buried in the same cemetery.

I am looking for a Fiddis branch originally from aberdeen but im trying to sort out the recent history first.

I am robert fiddis, my dad is george, my granny is margret fiddis, her dad was george fiddis and that is where im stumped the two oldest were originally from aberdeen

i have had no luck finding an details except that the older george fiddis was in ww1 and recieved a medal which is now in a museum in Ennniskillen, Fermanagh

I have also noticed that many names are used several times for various Fiddis branches especially george robert and andrew

one answer i know is that it comes from a french phrase meaning Full Of Faith and my guess is that the Norman invasion brought it Scotland's way. i hope this helps or sparks up more convos i am an irish fiddis ad am keen for anything about the ancestory

i am Robert Fiddis living in Fermanagh. Fiddis/Fiddes has a lot of connections with aberdeen my granny (Margaret Fiddis) came to Tyrone N.Ireland from aberdeen also near to aberdeen is a small village called Fiddes named after the Fiddes branch of the family.

My Great Granddad was called Charles Fiddis who served in WW1 if anyone has any info on him it would be great

Hi. My name is Charles S. Faddis. I live in the State of Maryland in the United States. My family has been doing a great deal of research for a couple of generations trying to trace our roots back to Scotland. I will tell you what I think I know, with the caveat that our information is never quite as complete as we would like.

It appears that the first Faddis in the United States arrived in the mid 1700's from Ireland. It also appears that the Faddis's were what we call here Scots-Irish, meaning Scots who had settled in the Ulster Plantation in Northern Ireland (or nearby) in the 1600's and then moved on to the Colonies when lands became available. These folks mostly moved west as fast as they could in the US, and spread into Pennsylvania and Ohio or southwest into Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and points beyond.

Faddis is a variant of Fiddes. There are a bunch of different spellings, Faddies, Fiddes, Fiddis, etc. I have seen the name spelled different ways for the same individual even in regard to the folks here in US after their arrival. Most of them did not read or write originally and were at the mercy of whoever was the scribe when the records were made.

To the best of my knowledge, the Fiddes Family, (i think that is the original spelling) came from an area just south of Aberdeenshire in NE Scotland. There is a Fiddes Castle there (really more of a large manor house). I have seen it and been to area. There is also a small village called Temple of Fiddes. (i don't know what the origin of that name is.)

Right now we are trying to finalize our research on Faddis Family in US and taking first steps to make the jump back across the pond and try to identify exactly where in Ireland the family had been living. I would be happy to correspond with you and share any information we have. I would guess we are cousins, but maybe our branches of the family left Scotland a few hundred years apart.

Hi. My name is Elizabeth Fiddis. I am a fourth generation Fiddis living in New Zealand. I don't know a lot about my family history and am after learning more where possible. My Great Great Grandfather Thomas Fiddis, was mayor of dunedin in 1899 & continued on council until at least 1914. In 1915 his son (my great grandfather)also named Thomas Fiddis, married Maude Watson, they then had 3 sons Thomas Watson, Graham Watson & Adear Watson. I know that my ancesters imigrated from Scotland but unsure of when. I would really love to find out more if anyone has any information.

thanks very much for your message. trying to get ahold of folks in scotland as we speak. so far, no luck.

it appears that all of my family in the states are descended from a john faddis (fiddes/fiddis) who settled in pennsylvania in the mid 1700's. shortly thereafter, he married a woman named hannah trimble who was of the friend's church.

john, it appears, came from ireland. have no idea from what port he sailed. there are other branches of the family who trace back to an alexander faddis who came about the same time. john and alexander may have been brothers, but that is supposition.

family here in early days were all farmers and came without much in the way of cash. they were, it appears, part of the big scots irish migration. scots who had been settled in n. ireland in the 1600's mostly and then moved on to the colonies when they could.

i would be interested in any information that might put us on the track of identifying where in ireland john came from. simultaneously, i am going to start around aberdeen in scotland, where it appears the family originated, and see what i can find out about people who left scotland for northern ireland.

would love to hear anything you know re any of the above.

Are your Fiddis folks related to Jane Fiddis (1820-1903) m. John Magee (McGee) lived at North Gower, Ontario before moving to Eugenia, Ontario? Jane also had a brother Hugh Fiddis m. Anne Thompson and lived at North Gower and she had several sisters Francis (Franny), Margaret, Dorothy (Dolly m. James Armstrong and Mary m. James Robinson.

Jane and her siblings are children of James Fiddis (b.1790) and Dorothy (Dolly) Craig. She is related to the Craigs of Goulbourn and North Gower mentioned in the book by J. B. Craig (published in 1929).

Wendy: Do you have any more information on Alexander & Mary? I have the Parrish record for Kintore that states: Henry NICOL & Ann FIDDIS, son & daughter of William NICOL & Alexander FIDDIS,married Aug 2nd 1845. In the 1845 Census record for Kinnelar there is a reord for the above Henry & Ann. It states her birthplace as New Machar and age 28.
That is all that I can find with actual proof.

This Alexander or Alex Fiddes is not from my branch of the family. At that time, all members of the family either remained in Scotland, or were in Canada. There is an Alexander born in Ontario in 1866, but that is more of a coincidence than likihood of being a connection. Sorry I can't help you more.

My great great grandmother Ellen Emerson married a John Fiddis and I would appreciate any informaiton you might have on the Fiddis and Emerson families. Our notes in our ancestry files indicate that they came from Enniskillen county Fermanagh and that a great great grandfather Emerson my namesake was an active Orangeman.

I have John Fiddes in my family. The dates do not match, but I was born in San Francisco, as was my father. My Grandmother, a Fiddes, was born in Montana in 1884, but moved to San Francisco prior to her marriage in 1904. My Grandmother's uncle (her Dad's brother) was John Fiddes. Her Dad's name was George. George and John emmigrated to Quebec, Canada, in the 1820's I am told.

However, I located my Feddis family in Co. Meath living in Moynalty near Kells circa 1860

1. Maria b. 1862 m. Patrick Ward of Donegal in NJ 1885 [Patrick immigrated to the U.S. in 1881 (Castle Garden records, before Ellis Island existed), I haven't discovered when Maria immigrated to the U.S.]

2. Bridget b. 17 Feb 1865 Moynalty, Co. Meath IRE

3. Anne b. 24 July 1867 Moynalty, Co. Meath IRE

[gap of seven years]
4. Alicia b. 14 Feb 1874, Co. Meath IRE

5. Catherine 11 July 1877, Co. Meath IRE

There may have been a son who became a priest or other children born in Scotland. Many Irish went to Glasgow SCO for seasonal work.

In Loving Memory of REV. RUTH ANN FIDDES Sept. 29, 1936 - April 15, 2006 On April 15, 2006, Ruth Ann Fiddes passed away at City of Hope Medical Center in Duarte, CA. Ruth Ann was born on September 29th, 1936, in Buffalo, NY. She was the daughter of Ella Potter Seligman and Herbert Barton King. She later lived in Randolph and Jamestown, NY with her three sisters, Carol, Betty, and Beverly. She moved west to Glendora, CA and she became a LVN, later specializing in hospice care. She married her second husband, James in 1985 and together they both became ordained ministers and established a ministry, The Living Truth where they provided prayer and spiritual guidance to all those whose paths they crossed. Ruth Ann is survived by her adored children, daughter Patricia Murphy and her husband Kevin, of Banning, CA; Cynthia Mangine of Glendora, CA; Carl Mangine of Portland OR; stepdaughter Linda Lew and her husband Ted of Stockton , CA; seven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her three sisters, Carol Spaulding of Coudersport, PA, Elizabeth Brown (Edward) of Randolph, NY, and Beverly (Lawrence) Main of Orlando, FL. Graveside interment services will be held on June 9th, at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside CA, near her husband James, a veteran of World War II. George Fiddes married Isabella Bustard and they had at least three children. To my knowledge Elizabeth Fiddes was born in 1846, George in 1848, and James Rutledge Fiddes (my Great Grandfather) in 1855.

I am seeking information on Elizabeth Fiddes and Duncan Reid who were born in Scotland and married 23 May 1836, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Ottawa, Canada.

Duncan Reid was born in 14 Aug 1805, Scotland and the couple relocated from Bytown, Ontario to Kingston, Ontario by the baptism of their first daughter, Janet Reid, 1 Nov 1837. Their second child Margaret Reid was born Kingston 1 Mar 1839, next, Jane (Jessie) Reid born Kingston 1841; Elizabeth Reid born Kingston Aug 1846; and lastly, William James Reid, born Kingston 21 Apr 1849.

Duncan Reid was a widower by 1861 Census in Kingston. Suspect Elizabeth Fiddes Reid died shortly after birth of William James Reid, but seek documentation and/or information from any Fiddes family present Bytown (Ottawa) Ontario ca 1836 to confirm

Unable to find burial of Elizabeth Fiddes Reid in either place.

Well, you have John in the 1891 UK Census. Have you tried looking in www.ellisisland.org site for his arrival into the US? Are they in the 1900, 1910, etc. US Census'. Is John in the SSDI by any chance?
My Minto/Minty families come from Forgue, Fyvie and King Edward Parishes, possibly others also, and from Inverkeithny, Banffshire. I believe William Fiddes or Fiddis came from Aboyne in Aberdeenshire.
Let me know how you go with these suggestions.

I do not know where they left from for Canada. It could have been from Glasgow, Scotland, Liverpool, England or Southampton, England, or somewhere else entirely.
Agnes Fiddes traveled by boat and train to get to Chicago, Illinois, USA. I do not know how the other family members got down to the US.

William Fiddes was the only one of his family to come to Canada. The rest of his family stayed in Scotland. He grew up on a farm called Tillycarin, in the sight of the River Dee. Helen Minty came over from Scotland with her family. William and Helen met in Canada, were married in 1857 at Ermosa (near Guelph, Ontario, Canada) and homesteaded on lot 19, cancession 12, Brant Township, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada.

William had a brother Alexander that was born in 1823. He married Evis. He died in 1866.

George Fiddes and Mary Thompson were William and Alexander's parents.

Thanks for help, but all info I have is John Fiddes married in London in 1886 so that does not give any other info bar his fathers name. Alexander Fiddes and his occupation. Its just a block wall. What part of Aberdeenshire are yours from, maybe if I look in a directory it may give an address of a doctor. Just a thought.

Helen's husband William Fiddis, emigrated from Aberdeenshire, Scotland to Canada. Their future generations moved all over Canada and down over the United States.
However, you do not say where his father Alexander lived, or who his mother was?
Was the son married in Scotland or elsewhere? Scottish Certificates are really marvellous, they give lots of information.

Many Thanks for your help, what you wrote was all the info that I have. On his marriage cert said that his father was called Alexander Fiddes, Doctor of Medicine. So thats as far back as I have gone. Any more clues would be a help.

Hi there!. I hope I can be of some help, I have done a search on www.ancestry.com and also Free BMD. You do not say where or when Alexander FIDDES was born, nor who he was married to?

You do not say which UK Census you found them in? I looked up the 1891 Census, and found John, Sarah and Gladys, living at 25 Desart? St.,Bromley, St. Leonards, London. John Fiddes, Head, Mar, 29, Marine Baker, New York, USA. Sarah Fiddes, Wife, Mar, 26, -, Poplar, London. Gladys Fiddes, Dau, S, 2, -, Poplar, London.
I found a Death for a John Gregory Fiddes, age 37, in June Qtr. 1899, West Ham,Essex, Greater London,Vol: 4a,Page: 65.
Marriage of John Gregory Fiddes, Mar Qtr. 1886, Poplar, Vol: 1c, Page: 853, to Sarah Jane Johnson.
Birth of Gladys Eugenia Fiddes, Mar Qtr. 1889, Poplar, London, Vol: 1c, Page: 694.
Marriage of Gladys Eugenia Fiddes, Dec Qtr. 1907, West Ham,Essex, Greataer London, Vol: 4a, Page: 567, to either Joseph Ingleson or Edward Arthur Hey.
Possible birth of Sarah Jane Johnson, Marylebone, Vol: 1a, Page: 413, Sep Qtr. 1864.

Looking for any links to Fiddes family Im stuck. All info I have is John Gregory Fiddes born approx 1862 census London census says born in USA. Married in London to Sarah Jane Johnson. His father was called Alexander Fiddes a doctor of medicine. Is this a son of William Fiddis and Helen Minty, everything seems to come back to Scotland. Any help appreciated. Many Thanks

Hi Heather,

I've been researching various Minty branches in order to overcome a hurdle or two in my own one and had wondered where Theodore Minty got to after his wife Margaret died in 1853. Could you please fill me in on what happened to Helen's siblings (James, Ann, William and Alexander) and of course, Theodore himself.
