Foleys of County Clare

I'm searching for leads to ancestors of my great-grandmother Margaret Mary Foley, born in Eribull (location of family farm or even name of family farm), County Clare, Ireland, in 1862. She emigrated to Jersey City, New Jersey, where she died in 1949. She married James Davey at St. Patrick's in Jersey City and was buried in Holy Name Cemetery in Jersey City. Margaret Mary Foley is the only link I have to County Clare. I mainly want to know if I have any relatives still in County Clare or Ireland in general. Please email me any info you have about anything I have posted in this message, particularly-or I should say if only- about Eribull, the only lead I have to a very specific spot in County Clare. My father and grandmother always said that the family farm was located where Shannon Airport is located now. Please reply.

Hi everybody,
I have traced my great grandfather Michael Foley. He was born in Waterford around 1837 and he was a labourer. His family moved to Scotland sometime after maybe due to the potato famine? He eventually married Sarah Mcgonigle form county Tyrone. They had 3 children, Jane 1865, Andrew 1867 and Michael, (my grandfather). 1873

I have dicovered that there were 330 Foley families living in Waterford 1847-1864 (Grifiths evaluation) so, I have hit a brick wall. If anyone has any possible knowledge of my family I should be grateful to hear from you.

Many thanks.

Jim Foley

She had a sister Celia. MF grew up in Roxbury, then an Irish-American neighborhood, and graduated from Girls' High School in Boston. To finance voice lessons, MF worked in a union hat factory until a family matter called her to California and ended her aspirations as a singer. While in California she taught swimming and gymnastics at resorts. After MF returned to Boston she put her voice to work for the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association, which employed her from 1906 to 1915 as a speaker and manager of organization work. She was also active in the Margaret Brent Suffrage Guild, a Massachusetts Catholic organization, and was its state chairman of organization in 1919.
Foley and other young Massachusetts suffragists, inspired by the militant tactics used by English suffragettes, undertook open-air speaking tours in 1909.

I'm trying to find out a bit more about my nan. She was born around 1920 in Ireland and left with a man called James Casey. They married in Liverpool and then lived in Cricklewood, North West London. They had 7 children 2 boys and five girls with one being my mum Mary Casey. Unfortunately my nan was killed on the railway around 1967 and my Gran dad never spoke of her. We were told she had no family in Ireland but believe she may have had a sister. My mum doesn't know much about her mum and we would both love to find out more. All help would be greatly received.

Foley's of Fulham UK

Trying to make a connection between a Patrick Foley and Alice Louise Tunnell. Alice born in Fulham around 1904. Her son took on the name of James Patrick Foley (his stepfather listed as Patrick Foley) for his purposes of moving to Australia in 1959. I have seen written (but can't confirm) that Patrick died in 1949 from TB. Any help on making this connection would be grateful.

John and Margaret Foley - Dalton City, IL

John and Margaret Foley, both born in Ireland, are my gggrandparents. John and Margaret had at least 10 children...including my ggrandmother Ellen Foley. According to the information that I have gathered, along with her brothers, James, Patrick and Francis Henneberry, Margaret and John Foley and their family moved to Moultrie County, Illinois in 1875.

In the 1880 Moultrie County census, Margaret, age 56, and her husband John (William in the census data), were living on a farm next to her brother James Henneberry in Dora Township with their children:

William age 38, James age 28, John age 18, Jane age 23, Margaret age 20, Frank age 16, Ellen age 14, and Elizabeth age 12.

There were three other Foley families and two Jeffries families living in Dora township in 1880.

Daughter Margaret (Maggie) married Thomas O'Brien in Will County on Oct. 17, 1881, Lic # 8734. Thomas was the younger brother of John O'Brien. They moved to Dalton City. Margaret died in 1939 and is buried in Mt Olivet Cemetery in Wilmington, IL. They had no children. (Note: John Henneberry, the brother of Margaret Henneberry, married into the O'Brien family in Wilmington, IL.)

Ellen Foley who married Phillip Jacob VOLLMER in 1892, my
ggrandparents, had eight children, including a set of twin boys. Both Ellen and Phillip died in Macon CO. IL and are buried in St. Isadore Cemetery in Moultrie CO. IL.

If anyone is related to this Foley family, please get back to me.

Kay
I know that there is a cemetary in WV I believe in Logan named: Foley Cemetary, my father said that he has been to it but it is in a very remote place you must have a 4 wheel drive or ORV to reach it. Richard's 2nd wife's name is Naomi, not certain what his first wife's names was, she passed away either before he went to WWII or while he was gone. Trying to find a connection. If you havea ny information please contact me. Thanks!

Margaret Stack (Foley)

Hello Foley's. I recently found out that I have a Foley in my lineage and I have a couple of questions. On the off-chance that anyone has a Margaret Foley in their tree, here is what I know:

Margaret Foley born in Ireland - anywhere between 1780 and 1800. Sorry I don't know more than that. I also do not know where she was born and I am wondering if there is a common, generic place the Foley's may have been in the late 1700's?

She was married twice. First to a Bulmer, second to a Thomas Stack (b approx 1783-87). From our oral family history, "Margaret has three grown up sons from a previous marriage (family name - Bulmer) in Ireland" when she married Thomas Stack. She then had two children with Thomas; named James and Mary.

The whole lot of them left Ireland for Brazil around 1820, then came to Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada from Brazil sometime around 1825. The Bulmer sons left for the U.S. shortly after, never to be heard from again. Margaret Foley died at sea on her way here; approximate date was 1825-1827.

Thanks for any and all help

Sean Stack

FOLEYS FROM NR.KILLORGLIN, CO. KERRY

Hello,
My maternal grandmother's name was Kathleen Foley and she was the eldest of thirteen children. Her siblings included Norrie, Tim, Bridget, Helen, Derek and Paddy, as well as six others who died as children, whose names I do not know Out of the ones that survived into adulthood, my grandmother Kathleen died on Good Friday 1986, when I was five months old. Derek died in the early 1990s, Norrie died in 2003 and the rest are still alive.
Those surviving siblings do not like to talk about their childhood as it was a difficult one of extreme poverty, so my information is limited. What I do know is that the family lived in a small, two room cottage on the mountains about a mile outside Killorglin and were evicted when my grandmother was about nine years old. They were too poor to pay the rent and support the growing numbers of children, and lived in the open on the mountainside for about seven months. As they were so well thought of in the local community, their friends and neighbours raised what money they could to get the family back into their home. However, three of the youngest children (two boys and a girl) died on the mountainside, two from unknown illnesses and one from falling down a cliff.
I have school register details for my grandmother and three aunts and uncles from the local primary school, who were kind enough to show my mother and I the records when we visited the area two years ago. On the same visit we were also introduced to a man who knew my great grandparents and younger aunts and uncles when he was growing up in the forties and fifties, he told us all about their legendary boxing day parties!

Unfortunately I do not know any more such as my great-grandparent's names, etc, but if anyone has any info they think might be relevant or helpful I would be very grateful.

My great-grandmother, Ellen Foley married William Scanlon and lived in Sligo. She was born, I’m told, either 1863 or 1867; she died in 1909. Her husband, Willie Scanlon remarried after her death, to Katherine Flanagan but they had no offspring.

Ellen Foley Scanlon’s children were:

1) Tom (who married an Annie);

2) John Scanlon who was a former solicitor general of Ireland who died in 1982; he married a Chris, possibly from England;

3) Terry (possibly either Honoria Therese as she liked to call herself, or Norah Teresa which is suspected as being her real name), and who is my grandmother; and was born June 15, 1905, and married John/Sean Gallagher in 1927 and settled in Dublin; and

4) Florence (Florrie) who married Christopher O’Malley and emigrated to NY.

Ellen Foley’s siblings include:

--Theresa Foley who married Michael Conway and emigrated to USA (4 children-Alice, James, Eleanor and Margaret)

--Kate Foley, who married a Hannon and also emigrated to USA (5 children I believe—Norah, George and three whose names I do not have)

--Margaret (Peg) Foley who married a man whose first name was Milton and also emigrated to USA and had at least one child, a son named Charles who was born around 1920

--Norah (or Nora; nicknamed Gyp) who married either an Edward Boylan or Edward Dillon and emigrated to USA, and had a daughter Mary who married a Cosgrove

--Tom, who also had a son, Tom who I believe may currently live in Sligo

--Mark who stayed on the family farm in Drumcondra, called “Oatfield,” and married someone nicknamed Baby Kelly and had a son Tom

--Michael who married Isobel Dowd and emigrated to USA

--John (who I’m told ran a store in Ballintogher)

--Mathilda (Tilly)

--Charles (named after his father), who married a Catherine (Kate) McSharry and I’m told had 6 children, Ann who emigrated to Washington, DC, Kathleen (Kate), Charles, Jim who emigrated to NY (Jim and Charles might be twins), Jack and Stephen, who emigrated to Sydney, Australia.

--James

--youngest child is unidentified

Their parents were Charles and Ann Foley (Ann’s maiden name may also have been Foley).

Unfortunately, I have no dates beyond the very few I’ve given here. If you have any information or feel you have a familial connection in any way, I would love to hear from you. Thank you. (Sorry if this isn't spaced well. Clemens, MI

Her mother's name: Ona Deliminkaitus (Ona = Anna)
Her dad was Anthony Januskewicz, however sometimes he spelled it Yanuskewicz.

Helen was married to Ted Moreau, who was born on May 1, 1901 in Hibbing Minnesota, died on November 13, 1965. They are are buried in Holy Sepulcher, section 17, lot 358, graves 3 & 4 I'm not sure when they were married, but it may of been around 1939 in Detroit, MI. They lived in Detroit, MI. Helen later moved. Ted and Helen had 2 children.

Helen's family went by the name of Foley, however, their real name was Yuneschevicz (spelling unsure) Sometimes it started with a J, sometimes with a Y. I am pretty sure there are other errors in the spelling as well. I don't know if the name was ever legally changed for Helen's parents or any of her siblings . I am including this tidbit of info on the last name in case it needs to be footnoted. so that future family researchers will not wind up with a mystery or dead end.

Helen had several siblings, and I believe she was the youngest.
The names I know:
Peter who also had a daughter named Helen and a son named Tony
Joseph who was in WWII and later owned a party store in Royal Oak, MI
John who married Emma and have a daugther. They live in Missippi
Ferdie who has a daughter Ann and Verconia and a son named Kevin(Veronia and Kevin have both passed away)

Some other info I have is:
the family is oringally from Lithuania and family stories have it that time was spent in England before coming to the US. We believe they entered through Ellis Island around 1895

Any one have any info on this Foley line?????
I should mention that Helen and Ted are my Grandparents.

Thank you!!
He later moved to Seattle with is parents and (I presume) died there. Trying to locate his death information and any family he may have had. He was quite close to my grandfather and great-grandmother Norberg while living in Seattle, my grandfather having worked for him as a painter for many years, and would like to know more about him and his family.

Searching for info on the following:

Peter Joseph Foley, born on June 30, 1893, he was son of James Foley and Rose Tobin, from Little Barasway, Newfoundland.

He was my Grandfather's brother....

Peter enlisted for WW1 from Sydney Nova Scotia, on June 19, 1917. On his attestation paper the incorrect DOB is listed. It says July 8, 1894, but also shows age of 23 years 11 months. According to his age, his birth should be 1893, which is what we have...

He may have lived in Grand Falls,NL, around 1916, and worked at the mill there. Possibly moved to live in the province of Quebec, possibly in Trois Rivieres (Three Rivers). Whether this was before or after the war is unknown...

Also, some information has lead us to believe he may have been a priest...

Can anyone out there help????

Linda Barnes (nee Foley)
