We just recently found out some new info on my family, and it turns out that I am also related to some Fortunes. All I know is that my GG Grand mother is a Surrender Lee Fortune, who married a Charles Elan Snellings. That is all that I know about them. If any one can help please email. Surrender Lee Fortune Snellings was my great great aunt. Her brother John W. Fortune was my great grandfather. Their father was William Macklin Fortune and their mother was Margaret Bowen Fortune. They had ten children. Surrender was the youngest, born on the day Gen Lee surrendered at Appomattox, hence the name. I've got quite a bit on the family, especially John's line. I look forward to hearing from you and sharing information. I was at Surrender's grave today. Hopefully the pictures of her grave stone turn out.

I've never heard about the connection to Matoaka, but if true, I would think it would be on her mother's side. I've traced the Fortune side back to Ireland in the late 1500s, but can't find a lot on my GGGrandmother (Surrender's mother). I do know a direct descendent of John Rolfe and Matoaka, so I'll ask him.
