Re: Where did FORTUNE surname originate?

Hello all.
If its of any use - I am from Wexford - the home of the Fortunes. Not sure if any of you know this but many people, mostly older people, still pronounce Fortune as Forkan. This is particularly in North Wexford - the old Gaelic stronghold. You also get names like Kinsella pronounced Kinch-sch-illa.

I grew up being called Mick Forkan by neighbours. Needless to say the pronunciation of a name in Ireland can be the closet thing to the real name as over time spellings change etc. This might also make some sense as I heard recently that the name is derived from a Cairn/Kearn from Forth. A Cairn off the top of my head was a hired hand and obviously Forth is a barony on the south east tip of wexford. Don't quote me on that though.

Hope this is of help.

By the way you get the various pronunciations of old Norman names too - the most common one would be Lambert which is known as Lamport etc etc

I've never heard about the connection to Matoaka, but if true, I would think it would be on her mother's side. I've traced the Fortune side back to Ireland in the late 1500s, but can't find a lot on my GGGrandmother (Surrender's mother). I do know a direct descendent of John Rolfe and Matoaka, so I'll ask him.

"According to families stories,my father's great grandmother was born around 1852 on Roanoke Island into the Weapomeoc Indian nation. Her American name was Anna, but her father preferred to call by her Indian name White Cloud.White Cloud married John Fortune, a Cherokee whose family migrated to Virginia from North Carolina. John and White Cloud left Roanoke Island and came to Washington D.C., where John became a bricklayer. I know little else about their life except that they lived on V Street in the Shaw District. They fourteen children, most of whom died young. Early death claimed White Cloud as well, and he (Fortune) married again and had four children.

Re: Where did FORTUNE surname originate?

I've never been happy with the stories pedalled out by the various genealogy quick buck merchants. Not enough research and greedy for profit in my experience. Certainly none of them seem to have searched Irish history & literature. If you only look at French and English history its easy to come to the conclusion that the Fortune name originated in France and possibly separatly in Scotland. My research goes a little deeper and predates the earliest recorded instances of the name, as is pedalled by any genealogy organisation I've been in contact with.

There have been a number of recordings of the name Fortchern and Ferceirtne in Irish history. Notably Saint Fortchern of Trim, sixth century bishop of Trim, Ireland.also known as Forkernus. The son of a pagan chieftain, he was converted to Christianity by Saint Loman of Trim.

Another Forchern is often confused with the above saint (If it is the same man he had a long life), was a smith, known as Saint Patricks bell maker.

The Annals of Ireland by the Four Masters lists Forchern & Ferceirtne as irish bards in the first century.

Another source which I can't find at the moment says that a man known as Forchern wrote the rules of Irish grammer around the time of Christ.
Therefore I recon the Fortune name originated in Ireland, travelled to Europe, very likely carried by mercenaries, and was then reintroduced to Ireland in its anglisized form during norman times.

I am also descended from Jacob Fortune. On the 1870 Ohio Census he is listed as Jacob Calvin Fortune. His father is John Fortune, son of Jacob and Phebia (Phebe) Fortune. John was born in 1804 in PA. Jacob Calvin was born in 1829 in Ohio. I have seen Jacob Calvin's wife listed as Christina or Catharine Holmes. She was born in 1835 in Ohio. On the 1870 census Jacob and Christina had five children. Adam was born in 1858, John was born in 1862, Honey (Nancy) was born in 1864, Charlotte was born in 1867, and Sarah Elizabeth was born 26 May 1869. They were all born in Ohio. My great, great grandmother is Sarah Elizabeth Fortune and she married Marion Harvey Strome on 11 Dec 1888. She died 10 Jan 1926 in Indiana. Which one of Jacob Calvin's children are you descended from? If I am able to find more information would you like me to send it to you?

Re: Need info ~FORTUNE's Cove~ in Nelson Co., VA in 1804

Fortune's Cove still exits in Nelson County, but is no longer owned by the family. The property was owned by James Lilburn Fortune and Hattie Seay Fortune. They raised their five sons; James, Clen, Thomas, Edward, Warren, and their two daughters Mary Lee Harvey and Addie Philips. The Fortune Family still thrives in Nelson County with descendants living in the Rockfish, Lovingston, and Arrington communities.

The family property was willed to the five sons and excluded the daughters as was common place during the time of the writing. James, the oldest, did not have any boys to pass the property on to, so he sold the property with the other boys in protest circa 1984.

The property has been sold again since this time with the property getting a major overhaul to include the three homes that were still standing after the flood in '69. The last owner converted much of the property to a trust and now exists as a nature preserve with several miles of nature trails that wind into the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

There are several Thomas Fortune's in the area. Thomas was the son of James Lilburn, who also had a son names Thomas. Thomas Fortune Ryan (not related) was a multi-millionaire that owned thousands of acres on a prestigious estate in Oak Ridge not far from Fortune's Cove. Folk lure has it that Thomas Ryan Fortune gave the Fortune's Cove property to James Lilburn Fortune as he did other properties in the Nelson County area. This could be supported in that Thomas Fortune Ryan maintained a gambling cabin atop the highest mountain in Fortune's Cove. There were two roads leading to the cabin, one from the Fortune Family farm and the other from the Davis Creek area. Thomas Fortune Ryan made his millions after leaving the area as a boy and moving to New York. There are several books on Amazon that were written about his life that is worth a read if you are interested. The one I am thinking of was something like, "The Great Accumulators."

Hope this helps.

Father appears to be Thomas and mother, Jane. Siblings Elizabeth M Fortune and Cornelins Fortune.

Mary Murray Fortune married Alexander Marshall Simpson on the 16th June 1883 and their address was 13 Bedford St, Edinburgh. They had 5 children under the Simpson surname.
