Of course they can, but they would be minor in comparison to family myths and books. Books are written after the fact using memories and tend to reflect the view of the writer.

A book with citations as footnotes is another matter. At least one can check the sources and decide.

My own long dead mother wrote a family history that I have unwittingly exposed as false and misleading and slanted heavily in her favor.

I know your frustration but even primary documents can have errors. You located quite a bit. I am still searching for one male based on the 1830 census and maybe another child after 1830. It has been nice sharing with you. I now know who is not in my line for that time period.

My illusive Henry Gates was married in PA about 1799. That is all I have been able to find. In your research journey keep an eye out for him.

Catherine Bolinbroke abt 1794"

Where did they marry?
What record of her can be found in Lancaster Co. PÅ?
Could she be from VA where all the older children were born?
What proof does anyone have as to her surname?

I do not dispute your info as I have already found VR to cite most of it. I do dispute using books and fam. histories as primary sources. These are leads, not facts, and have to be verified with a real citation.

According to "Rev. War Patriots of Ross Co. Ohio", his burial place is unknown and this is a memorial stone placed next to his dau. Elizabeth´s grave in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

To separate/locate the Gates Branch of my line I have had to do what I call process of elimination. I pulled up everything I could find on your line. Matched it to marriages in Ross, Ohio and eliiminated it. Next I need to do the line of Nehemiah Gates. This is what I have located with sources. Maybe you will find something new.

John (Getz) Gates b.c. 1764 Berks Co., PA or Germany m.
Catherine´s Bolinbroke surname is supposedly cited via: Family Data Collection.

Source Information:
Edmund West, comp.. Family Data Collection - Individual Records [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: The Generations Network, Inc., 2000.
Description:
The Family Data Collection - Individual Records database was created while gathering genealogical data for use in the study of human genetics and disease.

This source is clearly cited as a finding tool and a secondary source. In other words, it is a “LEAD” and not necessarily fact. It is the equivalent of using Ancestry.com World Tree as a source. Anyone using this source is just taking a shortcut around a difficult problem.

John and Catherine Gates first dau. Elizabeth was born 3 Mar 1795 in Rockingham Co. VA which would imply that they married there.
Samuel's father MIGHT be William Bennett 1739 of Accomack, VA.
The Gates line goes back to Ross, Ohio about 1805. They came to Ross from Whitely, Greene, PA.
Thanks for the help! I think I found the connection, but it was NO FUN getting there. Thanks to Find-a-Grave, I found that he was married to a Malvena Barker at one point and then married a Tritt (Elmer). I took that info and searched census records and found her as a TRITT with Walter Gates and some siblings living her at her in-laws. that was a HUGE job, but I finally got it figured out! Thanks for the help, though! :)

Matilda was of Whiteley, Greene, PA. but born in VA.

Also check the family of Catherina Magdalena Bollenbacher b. 27 Oct 1780, Berks, PA. The 1790 Berks census is on line.
That is well and good, but not relevant. King Henry and Lady Di are the least of my worries. I am interested in facts and not thoughts unless they are making a valid circumstantial point.

There is no doubt her name was Catherine but no one seems to have actually researched her.

It would seem fair for those who keep citing it as Bolinbroke etc. to provide a citation.

Duane Mills

I spent I couple of hours trying to trace this Catherine Bolinbroke. Wish I could have found an answer but I'd like to pass on some thoughts.

1. King Henry of England was from the House of Bolingbroke as was Diana Spencer. She could be something like Catherine St. John of Bolingbroke.
2. Since she was born before the American Revolution her father could have been an representative of the British.
3. The Lancaster area of PA seemed to try to stay neutral during the revolution.
4. Depending on her father being a Tory or Patriot any property could have been confiscated.

I would like to take the opportunity of this posting to pose a question to Gates researchers.

All over the internet, on Gates surname lists, and on Anc.Com, Mary Gates who m. Thomas McNeal in 1822, Ross Co. OH is quoted as having mother called Catherine Bolinbroke or some version thereof. There is never a citation or if there is, it is a book or Anc.Com World Tree or some other elusive proof.

I have citations that her name certainly was Catherine, but in extensive research in OH, VA and PA, have never seen any evidence at all that her name was Bolinbroke etc.

Catherine´s Bolinbroke surname is supposedly cited via: Family Data Collection.
Source Information: Edmund West, comp..

Another suspect source, DAR application 569675, claims descent from John Gates for Dorothy Pauline Sewards, dated 1972. This DAR file contains Ntl. Archives file S5172, correct citation is:
File S5172 can be found also on Heritage Quest. Citation, prob. for National Archives is:
M805 Roll: 351 Image: 215 File: S5172 Page: 1 of 8 (I used Heritage Quest)

I have both the application and the supporting documents. When this application is used as a source, it means that I have copies of supporting documentation that seem to verify the accurcy of the source.

One should note that this application was only for John Gates son Henry and descendants therefore there will be no confirmation for siblings of Henry Gates.

John Gates father is named as Leonard several times in court testimony, the wife of John Gates is stated as Catherine Bolinbroke with documentation for first name but not maiden name, and the Children of John and Catherine are listed but with no supporting documentation: I have various marriage records of Ross Co. and believe these children are correct, although they eventually have to be researched better.

My notes in (xxx)
Elizabeth b. 13/ Mar 1795 (d. 18 Sep. 1868)	unmarried
John (bef. 1800) Mary Bechum
Henry 1797 (d. 19 May 1869) Margaret Day
Mary 6 May 1801 (d. 14 Aug. 1872)Thomas McNeal 1822
Amilia (abt. 1803) Andrew Trumbaugh
Catherine (abt. 1805) Abraham Lucas
Samuel (abt. 1807) Lavina Wacham 1833 (Wackman?)
Jacob (abt. 1809 VA) Eliza Jane Morris (Day!)

I am unsure how the applicant knew about the wife´s surname or all the children as the documentation is only partially complete. The children will be hard to sort out because I personally believe John Gates came to Ross Co. in the fall of 1809 with his father and siblings and the repeating names before and after 1850 make research difficult.

John Gates wife seems to be missing as far back as 1820 and prob. earlier. The DAR appl. lists her Catherine BOLINBROKE b: 1768 in PA, but with no verifiable sources. I am sure she is Catherine, but need confirmation of her maiden name and am also unsure when and where she died.

Depending on death date, if she died in Ross Co. OH after he migrated there in the fall of 1809, she is poss. buried near husband in Mount Carmel Cem.

One researcher says that she and John m. in 1793, presumabably in Lancaster Co. It is possible her name was Bollenbach or a similiar german name that was anglicized, just as Götz morphed into Getz and then Gates.

As the last child was b. 1809 VA when she was abt. 41, it is logical to think she died there soon after or would have had another child in Ross Co. OH.

My simple question is: Does anyone have a credible citation for Catherine Gates surname?

Duane Mills
Stavanger, Norway
MARY JANE GATES/GAETZ birth&parents info

I couldn't find my older post so I am reposting this inquiry. I am looking for place of birth and parents exact names for a MARY JANE GAETZ/GATES born abt 26 MARCH 1860-1862 (most likely 1861). I have gathered much information on her but nothing substantial BEFORE 1885. All the information I have obtained leads to these two conclusions: 1) parents lived in Nova Scotia around 1860's then moved to Maine later. 2) she was born somewhere in Nova Scotia to a John or David Gates and (Elizabeth Clark?). Census has shown parents to either both have come from Maine, or one from England and the other from Canada. As you can see the information I have is sketchy. If anyone has a Mary Jane Gaetz/Gates in there line of Gaetz/Gates that might fit in this discription, if anyone has come across any information concerning her whereabouts before 1885, or if someone is willing to try to look up possibilities of Mary's birth information in Nova Scotia's Archives I'd greatly appreciate it.
(Note: She later moved and stayed in Massachusetts where she married in 1885 and died in 1925. I have ALL the information on her after 1885, but can not find anything concrete before then.)

ISO Walter Gates (b. abt. 1904) s/o Ralph Gates....

I am researching an elusive line for a friend of mine who only knows that her grandfather, Walter Gates (), was born around 1904 and that his father was a Ralph. Walter married a Fern Hazel Kinzie (b. 1922), but apparently this was not his first marriage and I have no information on any other marriages.

Now, I did see on another website that there was a Ralph Gates that was married to a Hallie Malvena "Vena" Barker before she had married an Elmer Tritt. Ironically enough, my friend told me that her grandmother's mother (Fern's mom) was a Hallie Tritt. However, the death of the first listed Hallie Malvena was in 1952 (per her headstone) and the death of Fern's mother was in the 80s (1980s).

But this is just way to coincidental...especially being in the same area (Nebraska). I don't know if Ralph was ever in Nebraska, though.....that might make my search easier.

Any info/help would be GREATLY GREATTTTTLLLLYYYYY appreciated!!

retrowfmk at yahoo dot com

Gates/Legg of Keokee Lee Virginia

Looking for the descendants of James J. Gates (b. 1861) and Elizabeth J. Legg (b. 1867) of Lee Co. Virginia. I have the children as follows:

James K Gates (1888-1956)

Lennie G Gates (1889-1927)

John B Gates (1891-1915)

William Clarence Gates (1893-1952)

Malinda C. Gates (1895-)

Winfield Scott Gates (1897-1959)

Myrtle V. Gates (1900-)

Ethel C. Gates (1903-1999)

Theodore Gates (1905-1975)

Olen G. Gates (1907-1958)

George D. Gates (1908-2000)

Bascomb R. Gates (1912)

I've come across some confusion. Someone is putting it out there that James, Elizabeth and their children come from Henry, Missouri. James J. Gates has his birth place as NC. And the Legg side all comes from Keokee, Lee VA. (my family)

I'd like to know who married and had children. And if I have any children wrong. I'm using census records and some sketchy family history.
Thanks!

Gates Family Tree-John Jackson Steward

I found a picture of my g.grandfather Johnny Jackson Steward "Pappy" born 1877 and my g.grandmother Sarah Savanna Jones Steward "Granny" on a search, found in 'The Gates Family Tree". It shocked me because I have this same photo. My grandfather was Walker Jackson Steward, pne of their sons. I was at "Pappy"'s funeral in a small country church in Maury County,TN est. 1961. Would you please give me any information that you have on him? I don't know his parents names.

Thank you, I found the book online, posted by the New York Public Library, and was able to save the picture to my files. The specific address where the pages can be found is: http://www.archive.org/stream/downersofamerica00down#page/n2...
Do you have access to a scanner? Could you scan the picture in the book? I am a descendant of Lydia. Her daughter was my g-g-grandmother.
Barb
dbjmlew@swbell.net
