Hello John, does your research confirm that Nancy Gover who married Jacob Cooley, Jr. was a daughter of John Gover and Elizabeth Duvall? Nancy is my 4th gg-mother. Some sources I have reviewed show only a Mary Gover as their daughter.

Regards,
Kim Cooley Gorrell

Hi there

Can you give us any information about Irene Gover? Do you have an approximate date of birth for her/place of birth. The names of her parents etc.?

Was she Irene Hitchon and married Gover or was she Gover marrying Hitchon?

As much info as you can give will enable someone to look up records for you.

Sue Thompson, Liverpool

Hi Steve, thanks for the latest reply. Unfortunately, it doesnt look as if there is an obvious link between our two families. My g g g grandfather, William Gover was, according to the census returns, born in Kent. He was married there, lived and died there too (1842). He was a baker!
Oh well, 'back to the drawing board'. Thanks again, Lesley

Hi: Lesley
the Govers have come from the french (Huguenot) they then settle in Swanage and in Somerset, My side settle in Swanage round the 1500. my first entry is of Hewstis, Daughter of John Gover born in 1563 the govers then moved to Corfe Castle round the 1700 and also lived in Wareham Working in the Clay Pits then in 1836 they moved again to Southampton then my G/ G/ Grandfather Joseph Gover moved to Portsmouth in 1882/3 and was a Shipwright, . I was born in Portsmouth in 1938 and lived there to 2006 . I now live in Cambridge. so I don`t think my side is related to your Gover but who knows there may be a connection some where.
Hi Steve
Thanks for the info. Im inclined to go with James & Ann (I think Ann Burden) the entry showing a bap ........9/5/1792 no first name. As Charles first born was called James b. 1817 which could be his fathers name. I have only found 3 children of James & Ann the 1792 blank, 1794 Elizabeth, 1797 Maria.
I know 1792 is Charles birth as I have seen the grave stone at Nursling which says he was 51.
The story is that Charles walked up from the West!! Then to confuse the issue his first born James was married to a Plymouth girl Mary Ann Oates. It is a very big jigsaw. Which gets worse as like you say there is Joseph & Elizabeth - another blank born 22/1/1792 and I cant find any other children for them. Also Charles last born was called Joseph!
Regards Maureen

Dear Gover Family,
Following a recent turnout I came across a rare local book that I borrowed from my local library many, many years ago. I believe it was privately published by the local coal firm that was, the SIBLEYs at Toothill. I attach a couple of pics/info which may be of interest to you. (Acknowledgements: Sibley, Nursling, Southampton, UK)

NOT SURE IF THIS IS OF ANY INTEREST: .. or through the fields at the bottom of Maybush Road, going past the farm and into Mr. Gover's field, then coming out in Green Lane.
WEBLINK: http://homes.chass.utoronto.ca/~wulfric/varia/early-memories...

Thanks for that, makes interesting reading. I know the Frank b. 1889 married to Emily had siblings of Lloyd-Georgina-Mary-Douglas-Reginald-Gwendoline.....I dont know anymore than that on the Canadian side. Franks dad was Frank Charles b.1869 married to May Jane.(Nursling) Frank's brother george b.1861 married to Olive Tanner is the line Im taking. Both Frank & George parents.......Joseph b.1836 married to Charlotte Light are buried in St. Boniface Church along with his parents Charles married to Amelia Marsh.
I have heard a story that Charles b. 1790 ish came from the West, walked into Nursling and stayed.
So any of you Corfe Castle, Swanage, Wareham Govers help me out! Ive found 2 entries in Corfe Castle in 1792 - but with no first name - parents being Joseph & Elizabeth and the other James & Ann. Charles by 1841 Census is in Nursling married to Amelia and died by the 1851 census. Thanks Mo

Hi - I am on this site as a guest/temporarily. Just wanted to say hi. I am not a Gover myself, but my late Uncle by marriage was. He and my Aunt (widow) were married some 56 years! Frank died in his late 80s Sat 24 March 2007. His nephew (my cousin age 39) died the following day. Strangely, my cousin's wife is also a relative of the Govers via her Nan? I was once told that a lot of people in the area would be related to the Govers (but I don't know any). Frank had almost died during the war following an raid on a Hampshire town which I believe was hit by bombs. Shortly after the event Frank who was badly injured was shipped off to the morgue, or about to be. As luck would have it, at some point a nurse spotted a slight movement, and he was given medical attention and he went on to live a long life! He did however have to use walking stick(s) maybe as he got older. He was a reasonably tall man, well built and strong (kept up with us on his sticks for some distance in his late 70s! Not bad going). My Uncle and several of his siblings were born in Canada. I always knew him as Frank, but he was born Reginald in Regina, Canada. A brother? was born in Saskatchewan. Frank came to the UK at a young age after his father was killed/died and stayed on a family farm in Nursling, Southampton. I vaguely remember him mentioning him playing at the Nursling Golf course. Many years ago I obtained a local history booklet from the Sibley family, Toot Hill (they had been long established as coal merchants in the Nursling area). In that book was a b+w picture of Frank's brother Lloyd on a round with his horse and cart. It is interesting to know family history - I never knew of Frank's family came from Dorset. Thank you for posting. mary.smith008@sky.com
ps Did you also know that there is a "Gover Road" off Test Road at Redbridge named after the family.

There are documents which show the Govers as Marblers of CorFe.
I was shown a document which has all the marbles names on and dates.
I can send link if you want or you can do Google search.
There were links to the East India trading company via marriage too i believe.
My husbands mum was a descendant from Lewis Gover as mentioned in peoples entries above this post and she was born in Wareham 5 miles from Corfe so the family hadn't gone far.
I know of several Govers still in Wareham.
A road was named after them in town to. Mother in laws father was also Lewis Gover although born 1898 in Wareham, my own husband was also born in Swanage where they lived around 1500-1700 also.
Peter Gover was mentioned in church records way back as a church warden.

Hi Melanie,

I noticed several posts on "Govers of Corfe Castle, Dorset" and thought I would seek any information that might help me in my Gover research. I have basically reached a blank wall seeking Gover information from England. My GGGG Grandfather was William Gover born in England March 6, 1788 and married Anna Drake born in England abt. 1794. I know they married in Philadelphia in 1818. William had a brother George and a sister Mary Ann Elizabeth. She married a James/John Asburner in England. William's father was also William (wife unknown). There was some Gover property "about 120 miles from London" (according to a 1828 letter) that William was to claim as he was the rightful heir. William the senior's will was Proved in London July 15, 1797. I have bits and pieces of information, but research has not proved benefical.

If you have any information that might help, I would appreciate it.

Thanks, Brent Gover

Hello

Thank you very much for the email.

Glad that we have a match. Interesting to hear that there is French ancestry in the family! I would love to research further into that.

The information I have for the Govers is as follows: it is a bit of mixture between my own work and help from fellow online Gover memembers. Dates are baptisms.

John Gover 1678 married Elizabeth Corban 1688 they had children Lewis, William, Richard and Elizabeth. Lewis 1719 married Joyce Bartlett 1721. Joyces parents John Bartland 1695 Joyce Farewell 1695 their children John, William, William, Ann. Lewis and Joyce had children William Gover 1741, John Gover 1740, Joseph Gover 1743, Priscilla Gover 1745, Lewis Gover 1748, Samuel Gover 1752 and two other children 1754 and 1756 no names. William Gover then married Mary Marsh 1742. Children George Gover 1781, Joseph Gover 1766, Lewis Gover 1768, Priscilla Gover 1771, Betty Gover 1774, Elizabeth Gover 1776, William Gover 1779, Mary Gover 1785. George Gover married Elizabeth Hobbs 1784, they had children George Gover 1811, John Gover 1808, Hannah Gover 1811, Sarah Gover 1814. George Gover married Ellen Crocker 1815 children James Gover 1842, Mary Gover 1849, Ellen Gover 1839, George Gover 1839, John Gover 1838.

James Gover is my direct ancestor. James lived in Tyneham and Corfe Castle. He married Sarah Stickland 1845. They had two children Emma 1871 and Louisa 1870. After James died Sarah moved to be with her children Emma and Louisa who had previously moved to the Rhondda Valleys with their husbands where their husbands worked in the coal mines.

I still live around the same area in Wales, around half an hour away.

Does the information you have match up to mine? Any further information you have would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to contact me directly my email address is melaniejenkins@hotmail.co.uk.

Hope to hear from you soon.
Mary Jane Gover was my Great Grand Aunt.
I may be able to help with some information.
If you would like to ask any question I will see what I can do. Also Les Gover was also related to her. Her father was my 2nd Great Grand Father. She did marry a Henry Weight and they had three daughters and four boys. I haven't gone further down her line but I could if you would like me to.

Cheers Ken Gover
