Joana,Hannah,Anna -in various census, born ca 1812 Canada - was in Warren county, Il. by 1850 and 1860 as Mrs. Alexander McDonald with Dianna,George,Jeheil all born Canada. Allen R. and Alexander born Illinois by 1853.Must have been married in Canada about 1836.Near them is an Orbin Harnden and family, including Jeremiah and Leander Harnden who later also live near them in Decatur county, Ks. Jeheil McDonald married in ILL Sarah Ward. In 1870 they are all in Union county, Iowa .In 1880 and 1885 they are in Decatur county, KS. Are these Harnden related?
Joanna Harnden McDonald probably died after 1900 in Pottawattamie county, Iowa age about 89-90,but I find no proof. In census she says her parents were born in New York. Who were her parents ? Thank you

Joanna Harnden's parents were Zadock J. Harnden b. 22 May 1779 Pomfret, Connecticut d. 17 Dec 1871 and Aby Millington b. 17 Mar 1783 Stafford, Connecticut, both died Canada and are buried Salem Cemetery, Lot 21, Cramahe Twp, Northumberland Co. Ontario.

Their children were Samuel, Sarah, Abby, David, Joanna, Chestina, Zadock J. Jr., Elizabeth, Sephronia, Betsy, Harriet and Mariah.

Joanna's sister, Sephronia b. 1818 Seymour, Ontario, married her 1st cousin, Orbin J. Harnden b. 4 Jan 1808 Johnsburg, New York d. 2 aug 1893 Saunders, Nebraska.

Sephronia (1818) and Orbin (1808) children were: Leander Wesley, Edward, Emma M. Benjamin J., Jeremiah, Lucy Ann, Sarah Elizabeth and Zadock Albert.

This branch of the family migrated through Illinois, Wisconsin settling in Nebraska, Wyoming and Iowa.

Sephronia (1818) and Orbin (1808) Harnden were my 1st cousin 4 times removed.

Hi, Jean, thanks for answering my post. I am not related to Joanna ,I am helping a friend who descends from Alexander and Joanna Harnden McDonald thru their son Jeheil and his son Hiram McDonald, who both died here in the Des Moines, Iowa area.I have been looking for Harndens in New York or Mass.which is where her parents were listed as coming from in 1880 and 1900 census.Just goes to show it depends on who answered the question,I guess.Zadock Harnden had surfaced a couple of times but born in Ct.so passed it.

Jean, I descend from Clinton H. Harnden, b.c. 1820, NY. Wife: Mary Raymond, b.c. 1825, NY. Children are: Jane b.c. 1840 Canada, Elizabeth b.c. 1842 Canada, Zedoc b. 1845 IL, Nathan Erbin b. 1848 IL, Mary E. b.1855 IL, Isaac Porter b.c. 1860 IA, Jerome W. b.c. 1861 IA, Julia Edith b. 1865 IA. I just found Clinton and family on the 1850 census in Warren County, IL. I can't yet locate him on the 1860 or 1870, but his son Zedoc (from whom I descend) appears on the 1870 in Wapello County IA. On the 1880 Clinton is in Cloud County, Kansas, but is on the 1895 Iowa State Census in Appanoose County. By 1900 Clinton, widowed, is living with son Zedoc in Monroe County, IA.
I've assumed for a some time that there is a connection between our Harndens. Do you know the names of the parents (all born in NY) of Clinton or Mary?

I know you addressed your mail to Jean but I live in Iowa andalso am searching Harnden for a friend. I see J.W. Harnden born 1862 and died 14 August 1906 in Monroe county,Iowa is buried in Oak View cemetery, Monroe county. Also a James Clinton Harnden is buried in Monroe county - different cemetery - born 1867, died 20 November 1933 (Seceder cemetery, Monroe county).
Google the Monroe county Genealogical Society- they are an active group and an obituary for one or both of these men may be of help

J. W. Harnden was Jerome W. Harnden b. 11 Jan 1862 Mahaska Co., Iowa d. 14 Aug 1906 Monroe Co., Iowa, married Claryndia (Clarinda) L. West b. Nov 1865 Mahaska Co., Iowa d. 1944, buried 2 Jan 1944 Oakview Cemetery, Monroe Co., Iowa with Jerome.

It is believed that Clinton H. Harnden (1821 NY) who married Mary Elizabeth Raymond, was the son of Ziba Harnden (1778 CT) and unknown wife, but not proven. Please email me off this list and I'll send you an invitation to access our private Harnden site. Alice Enfield is a member and has been working on this line. Clinton falls off the radar around the 1860 & 1870s.

Clinton Harnden, b May 1820, was not a son of Ziba Harnden, but rather a child of Orbin (b. c1787) and his wife Esther (b c1789). Orbin and Esther had at least 8 children, including Clinton H Harnden and his brother Orbin J Harnden Jr, b 4 Jan 1818. This latter Orbin, b 1818, has been placed as the son of Zadock or Ziba by a number of researchers, but it seems that people have confused the three Orbins: the son of Samuel Harnden was Orbin b 1787, whose son was Orbin J. b 1818. The Orbin b 1806 was the son of Ziba.
According to my research, Orbin Sr remained in New York State near his parents after his brothers Ziba, Zadock, Joshua, Luther, and Pliny moved to Canada, for he is listed adjacent to his father, Samuel Harnden, in the 1820 census for Johnsburg, NY. Orbin is listed in Johnsburg again in 1830, but shortly thereafter he temporarily moved with his family to Canada, appearing in the Haldimand census for the first time in 1833. The 1833 date is also approximated by his son Orbin Jr., who reported in the 1842 census that he had been in Canada for 8 years. Orbin Jr and his brother Clinton lived with their uncle Zadock in the early 1840s in Haldimand Twp before both moved to the western US. Orbin Sr returned to Johnsburg by 1840, but he had moved back to Canada by the 1851 census and was living in Sidney Twp with his wife and was, in typical Harnden fashion, operating a sawmill. Based on the census and assessment data for the Orbins of Johnsburg 1820/1830 and Haldimand 1833, I have no doubt that they are the same individual.
