Hi Jean,

Yes there is, but it's all jacked up. Hey Andrew I haven't seen you involved in Harnden Research in years, and it shows, you're quite far behind the learning curve. I suggest you log into the family site and get updated, before you start confusing these young and or new researchers, and more misinformation get's posted on the web.

Do not post my lines through Zadock Harnden (1779) unless you get it right!

If there are any Harnden researchers out there that want to know the proper story of their ancestry contact myself at daniel_harnden@yahoo.com or Jean Carmean.

Thanks, Dan Harnden (Compiler of The North American Harnden Lines and the "The Harnden Encyclopedia" interactive CD.)

Hi Dan,

Rather than being "all jacked up" as you say, I think my research is pretty good! I have looked at the information you've compiled in your Harnden Encyclopedia that pertains to the early Harndens in Canada (children of Samuel), and I think there are places where my data makes much more sense. Unless I'm missing something, there seems to be several problems with the way your site arranges some of the early Canadian Harndens. I’ve started with these three:

1. Your site has William Harnden, son of Samuel, as born 19 Sep 1780 in Pomfret, CT. In my view, this birth record doesn’t exist, and neither did this William. I did research years ago at the state library in Hartford, CT, and I found that only William’s daughter Sarah was born on this day – no evidence of her twin named William. A transcribed version of the Barbour Collection on RootsWeb agrees with me: (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ctwindha/records/barbour/b...) listing only Ziba, Zadock, and Sarah as children of Samuel. Further, your site has this William’s daughter, Mary, marrying her uncle Ziba. Besides being highly improbable, there is definite evidence of a mistake here: your site indicates this Mary was born 17 Oct 1817, but this is the birthdate of Ziba’s daughter-in-law, Margaret Pettibone, as derived from her tombstone, not the birthdate of Ziba’s wife.
2. Ziba Harnden, son of Samuel, was clearly in Canada from 1808 onward according to yearly census records, yet your site has his children being born in the United States well into the 1820s.
3. The Orbin Harnden whom your site lists as the son of Samuel is actually a grandson. His wife Ellen was born in 1825, making her 40 years younger than her husband and only 7 years old at the birth of her first child. Clearly this is impossible. The Orbin who was the son of Samuel married Hester according to the Sidney Twp census, and she was of an appropriate age.

I freely share all I find and post it for use by anyone, and as my website indicates, I am open to corrections and additions to my research by others. There’s no question that my research is a work in progress, but I stand by it. It’s well researched and well reasoned out, and I make changes when others disagree and can satisfactorily support their claims. The pursuit of credible research in general relies on a forum for sharing what is discovered, whether that forum is academic journals, conferences, or postings on the web; the practice of putting information “out there” in a public place for the research community to comment on is a fundamental tenet of research business. For someone to imply that I should not have posted my work due to inaccuracies fails, in my view, to consider what the research process involves. Research must be made available for it to be critiqued, and it is the common practice to do so.

I'm encouraged that our data overlap in many areas, and I’m open to any discussion about differences there may be. I regret that I’m not always as prompt in my replies as I’d like to be. That's also a work in progress!

Andrew

Good morning Andrew,

I did invite you to our private Harnden site on MyFamily to which we have many, many members from all over North America who particpate in discussion and additions/corrections. The notations you have sited, No.'s 1,2, and 3, have been discussed and researched. Please review the 75 pages of said in our News section.

<< William’s daughter, Mary, marrying her uncle Ziba. >>

Ziba (1778) did indeed marry his brother William's daughter, Mary. Ziba married 1) there having had been 13 children; Polly (Mary), Ruby, Amy, Betsey, Ziba D., Orbin, David, William, James, Electa (Elizabeth), Emily, Clinton H., Hannah. Married 2) 2 Dec 1835 Warren Co, NEW YORK, Mary (Polly) Harnden b. 17 Oct 1817 Holland, Erie, NEW YORK d. 13 Apr 1863 Pomfret, Windham, Connecticut. No children of the 2nd marriage.

Brian Gordon Harnden of Fraserville, ON and his father, the late Gordon Charles Harnden of Grafton, ON, who served as Alnwick-Haldimand Twp. Councillor for many years, where kind enough take headstone pictures in Castleton, Eddystone, Fairview, Salem and Fairview cemeteries in the Haldimand, Canada areas. These pictures are on our private site in the photo section.

Several years ago I asked you for your proof that William (1780), twin of Sarah and have yet to reeive a reply. Wiliam was my 3rd ggrandfather, for he in fact, did exist. His son, William b. 1814 NY m. Margaret H. Pettibone. William is buried in Eddystone, Margaret is buried in Fairview. Their son, Andrew J. Harnden (1838) m. Sarah Catherine Long, both b. Canada, immigrated 1876 to Michigan's Thumb and are buried in Elk Twp. cemetery along with their children. I personally took headstone pictures. They are on our private site.

The Barbour Collection is not all inclusive and there are many errors in it.

Dan Harnden on the Canadian Migration

Hi Andrew,

If you just downloaded and read The Harnden Encyclopedia currently on The Harnden Family Site, you are missing something. As the one currently posted up there is a Preliminary Draft of the First Edition from a little over 2 years ago. The completed first edition was given out during our first North American Harnden Reunion in Aug. 2007, in Wilmington, Mass. Since, then we’ve had large discussions pertaining to the early Canadian Migration. For years the family has relied on ‘The Harnden Family Tree Book’ written in Canada in the 1980’s. About a year ago, we had some in depth discussions about the incongruities in it.

1. I find it arrogant and presumptuous to exclude William from the family tree. He was mentioned by our elders, and about 10 generations have been documented in regards to him. Now, I can’t say for certain that William was the twin of Sarah, but this is the way our elders have documented it. There were several Williams in the family at this same period in history, so it is possible that he is confused with one of the others. But, you will find that about 62 of the current Harnden researchers are descended from him. And, I think at least one of them would have argued his place in history if they had an issue with it. I do find it interesting though that Ziba had a documented son named William supposedly born in 1814, but it’s documented that he married a Julia. After further review of the databases, I see that this William (1780) that didn’t exist, was YOUR direct ancestor. If he didn’t exist, I guess you’re not a Harnden?

In your post you say Sarah was the daughter of William I assume you meant she was the daughter of Samuel?

Ziba married a woman named Mary born in 1782 as far as I can tell, because she was living with son Orbin according to the Census records of 1851. I’ve never held to the legend that Ziba married his Niece. I think it’s possible she lived with him to assist with the household though. As far as Pettibone’s Birth date I’ve seen 2 dates for her one is 10 Jun 1818 and the other is 17 Oct 1817. I site 3 individual sources for the dates; Jean Carmean, Glenna Reshikoff and Mary Chung.

2. What do you base the 1808 date on? The earliest records I’ve found on the Harnden family in Canada is around 1812. Through military service and land records:
Joshua Harnden served in 1812 in The First Regiment Northumberland Militia.

The next earliest records to be found on the family are from 1813. All of our family members served in The First Regiment Northumberland Militia of Canada.

Private Luther Harnden served as early as May 25, 1813.
Corporal Zaddock J. Harnden served as early as July 25, 1813.

These other family members served as early as October 8, 1813:

Harnden Eddy
Ziba Harnden
Joshua Russ

On the other side of the border during 1812/13. Orbin (1785) was serving as a Private in the 23rd Regiment (Cook's), New York Militia.

"Samuel (1751) is given credit as the patriarch of the Canadian lines."

So, by 1813 the following members of the family were in Canada.

Joshua Harnden (1771) (Samuel's brother)
Luther Harnden (1782) (Samuel's son)
Zaddock J. Harnden (1779) (Samuel's son)
Ziba Harnden (1778) (Samuel's son)
Harnden Eddy (1796) (Allen Eddy's son, his mother was a female Harnden believed to be fathered by Samuel, she was born in 1776 and died in 1807, there is no known first name for her)

The next wave of immigrants would probably have been Pliny (1793) (Samuel's Nephew through his brother John) and Orbin (1785) (Samuel's son) this happened around 1820.

Pliny (1793) settled in Clarke, Durham County, Ontario, Canada.
Orbin (1785) settled in Sidney, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada.

According to land records Zaddock J. Harnden (1779) and Ziba Harnden (1778) puchased their land in Haldimand, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada in 1826.

I think I have all of Ziba’s children born around 1814 on being born in Canada.

3. You’re confusing the Orbin Harndens you can see a large discussion on this on the family site: http://www.myfamily.com/exec?c=content&htx=view&site...

and

http://www.myfamily.com/exec?c=content&htx=view&site...

3.Yes, Orbin (1806 son of Ziba) would be the grandson of Samuel. He married Ellen McMann (1825) and their first child was born in ABT 1845. Orbin (1785 son of Samuel) married Esther (1788) and I don’t find any “proven” children for them.

If you want to track the Harnden Canadians you can’t start with Samuel you have to start with his father Jonathan.

Here are a few of the migration generations as I have them right now:

1. SGT Jonathan Harnden was born 15 May 1733 in Wilmington, Middlesex, Massachusetts. He died 30 Jul 1813 in Granville, Washington, New York and was buried in Lee-Oatman Cemetery, S. Granville, Washington, New York.

In Lee-Oatman Cemetery, South Granville, Washington, New York, there is an unmarked grave at the side of Jonathan's grave which is thought to be his wife's grave.

As a young man, he moved to the vicinity of Hebron and Salem, Connecticut with his parents and siblings. He was a soldier in the French and Indian War.

He served with the Connecticut Militia that invaded Canada in 1755.
He was in Capt. Isreal Putnam's company in the campaign against the French around Lake George, Fort Edward, Fort Ticonderoga and at Crown Point. He was at Quebec in 1760 under command of Isreal Putnam.

He was also a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He saw active service as Sergeant of his company, on the march to West Chester following the "Lexington Alarm" and in the campaigns around New York City in 1776. In these campaigns he served as Sergeant in the 5th Company, Captain Ephraim Warren, Lieutenant David Waters, 11th Regiment, Colonel Ebinezer Williams of Pomfret, Conn. Lieutenant Colonel Isreal Putnam of Pomfret, 3rd Brigadier General Gordon Saltonstall (Succeeded by Brigadier General John Tyler) Connecticut Militia.
He was a Sergeant in one of the celebrated Connecticut Regiments that won distinction under General Benedict Arnold at the battle of Saratoga in 1777.

After having seen Northeastern New York during the campaigns, both in the French and Indian Wars and in the Revolutionary War, he moved to that locality in 1779, taking advantage of the "Land Grant" to Revolutionary Soldiers.

He was one of the seven original settlers at Granville, Washington Co, (Charlotte Co. first) New York, in 1779. He built conaucted (spelled like it is in letter.) a hotel with a large hall connected with it at Granville. (The hotel burned down in 1930).

Jonathan owned this dance hall in Granville, Washington, New York according to the Harnden/Edgecomb Manuscript.

Originally John S. Harnden, Jonathan's son supposedly died by drowning in the Niagara River according to family legend. This was suppose to have happened about 1812. However, John S. is found in Vermont until 1830. Given the fact that Jonathan died in 1813, I suggest it was probably he who died by drowning.

Jonathan married Phebe [scrapbook].

Daniel Thomas Harnden is the person that finally put a name to this woman, but I don't know what his source for this information is.

Jonathan and Phebe had the following children:

+ 2 M i CPT Samuel Harnden was born 28 Jun 1751 and died after 1820.
+ 3 M ii John S. HARNDEN was born 30 Mar 1755 and died 1812.
+ 4 F iii Harriet (Elizabeth) Harnden was born 1760 and died 11 May 1846.
+ 5 M iv William Harnden was born 1766.
+ 6 M v Joshua Harnden was born 1771 and died 6 Dec 1822.
+ 7 M vi Orpha Harnden was born 1772.
8 F vii Lovicy (Levicy) Harnden.

Lovicy married DRAPER.

2. CPT Samuel Harnden [scrapbook] (Jonathan ) was born 28 Jun 1751 in Wilmington, Middlesex, Massachusetts. He died after 1820 in Granville, Washington, New York.

Samuel resided in Granville, New York as well as Wells, Danby Corners and Warrenburg, VT.

He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War in Colonel John
Williams regiment.

The following is from:

Military minutes of the Council of Appointment of the State of New York, 1783-1821 Vol. 1 & 2

Samuel Harnden Sr. (1751)
1786 Ensign, Lieut. Col. Commandant Adam Martin’s Regiiment, Washington Co., NY
1789 Vice Captain, Colonel Adam Martin’s Regiment
1793 Captain, Light Infantry, Lieut. Colonel Commandant John Buck’s regiment

Johanna and Samuel married in Nathan Draper's home.

Samuel is given credit as the patriarch of the Canadian lines.

The following is from the Harnden family tree book written in Canada in the 1980's:

'Samuel Harnden the accredited root of our ever bearing family tree, married Johanna Draper on Feb. 15, 1776, in her home town of Killingly, Windham Co., Connecticut. Although there are no given dates, Samuel fathered two other sons, William and Orbin.

Family legend indicates that Samuel's progeny remained loyal to Britain long after the American War of Independence. Some Harndens helped protect our Canadian sovereignty during the War (1812-1814).
Already Zadock had settled in Ontario where he had died at over Ninety years of age.

A generation later, three sons of William migrated to Canada. Reportedly they came in their own barge via the Erie Canal which was completed by 1825. In time their two uncles, Orbin and Ziba, arrived to join the clan.'

It should be noted that the family actually fought each other on both sides of the War of 1812.

Samuel married Johanna DRAPER [scrapbook], daughter of Nathan DRAPER and Johanna ROBERTS (ROBARDS), on 15 Feb 1776 in Killingly, Windham, Connecticut. Johanna was born 2 Apr 1756 in Killingly, Windham, Connecticut.

Email received Sept. 9, 1998 from Barbara Spain, BLBSJOS@aol.com

Joyce: I received your e-mail about the Drapers, specifically, your Gideon,
and his parents, Nathan and Joanna Robards. Yes, Nathan and Joanna are my
ancestors, too. My descent is through their daughter, Joanna, who married
Samuel Harnden.
I find it interesting that you used the spelling "Robards." I have seen that
used a couple times, but I have usually seen it spelled "Roberts." Do you
have reason to believe the name was actually "Robards?" Probably most
research we would do would list the two spellings as one family; but one never
knows for sure.
You say that you have a Nathan and a Nathan Jr. in the 1790 Census for
Washington Co., NY and you wonder if this is the Nathan who married Joanna. I
am almost certain that it is. I, too, have seen that Census, and almost all
the Drapers were in NY at that time, as was Samuel Harnden, who my Joanna
married. You probably noticed, as I did, that in 1790, James, Nathan, and
Nathan, Jr., were all living in a row, with Nathaniel a few houses away and
Samuel Harnden a few houses away from the Drapers. Jonathan Harnden was
there, too. I'm not sure how Jonathan was related to my Samuel.
Another interesting piece of information is that Nathaniel Draper, son of
Nathan and Joanna, married a Hannah Roberts in 1779. She was probably related to Joanna in some way, besides the fact that Hannah was Joanna's daughter-in-law.
You ask if I can shed any light on death dates for Nathan and Joanna.
Unfortunately, I cannot. I do know that they were married on 18 January, 1748
in Killingly, CT. But their death dates and places are unknown to me.
You say your Gideon died in Union Co., Ohio. Was he buried there as well? I have recorded that Gideon, Nathan, Jr., and Ruben, all served in the Dutchess County, NY, Militia, and that their brother John served in the Albany County,
Ny, Militia. Perhaps that is something you can add to your records.
I was glad to hear from you, and I hope we can stay in touch by e-mail.
Barbara Spain

Samuel and Johanna had the following children:

+ 9 F i Harnden was born 1776 and died 1807.
+ 10 M ii Ziba Harnden was born 9 Feb 1778 and died 7 Dec 1835.
+ 11 M iii Zadock J. HARNDEN was born 22 May 1779 and died 17 Dec 1871.
+ 12 F iv Sarah Harnden was born 19 Sep 1780 and died 21 May 1849.
+ 13 M v William Harnden was born 19 Sep 1780.
+ 14 M vi Luther Harnden was born 17 Nov 1782 and died 24 May 1876.
15 M vii Orbin (Urban) Robert Harnden was born 1785 in New York.

There used to be a Reuben (Erben) Harnden born 1786 in New York listed as the son of Samuel. We believe this is the same person.

Some people have listed an alternative name for this man as Harvey. I don't know where that comes from. Robert does make some sense, but Harvey doesn't really work.

Orbin was in the War of 1812:

He served as a Pvt. in the 23 Regiment (Cook's), New York Militia

Orbin married Esther. Esther was born 1788.

+ 16 M viii Simon Harnden was born 20 Apr 1788 and died 21 Jul 1826.
+ 17 M ix Samuel Harnden Jr. was born 20 Apr 1790 and died 30 Nov 1873.

3. John S. HARNDEN (Jonathan ) was born 30 Mar 1755 in Windham, Connecticut. He died 1812.

It should be noted that there are records of a Barichiah, John, Jonathan and Samuel residing in Granville, Charlotte County, VT in 1781 according to the VT Early Census Index. They are all on page 34 of that Census. John may prove to be the father of some of the lines in VT and New Hampshire.

John married (1) Elizabeth. Elizabeth was born 1776 in Massachusetts.

They had the following children:

+ 18 M i Hosea Barrachiah Harnden was born 12 Feb 1782 and died 24 Jan 1854.
+ 19 M ii Pliny Harnden was born 1793 and died 1872.
+ 20 M iii Benjamin Harnden was born 1796.
+ 21 M iv Samuel Harnden was born about 1800.
+ 22 M v James Harnden was born 1802 and died 1870.
+ 23 M vi Eli Harnden was born 1808.

John also married (2) Isabella CRON. Isabella was born 1780 in Annan, Dumfrieshire, Scotland. She died 1813 in Ontario, Canada.

Letter from Stella E. Asling Riis to Florence Huff Haggerty, 4 October, 1946: Mary [Galbraith] received a grant of lot No. I in the 3rd. Con. of Blenheim as the daughter of James CRON, a United Empire Loyalist.
James Cron's younger daughter Isabella, married John Harnden. Mr. Harnden was a widower and had a son Plyn who was about twelve years of age at the time of his father's second marriage. Isabella told her stepson about their home in Scotland, and to Plyn we are indebted for the facts regarding the Crons - we who are descended from Isabella Cron; for my grandmother Mary, who was daughter of Isabella CRON and her husband John Harnden, married John Morrow, and he is the ancestor you are wanting to know about. So I will tell you first about the Crons. Their home was Greenfield-Kirkpatrick-Fleming, two miles from Annan in the south of Scotland, not far from Gretna Green, famous for run-away marriages. Isabella CRON like her sister Mary received a grant of two hundred acres, as the daughter of James CRON, in Markham, and that is where Grandma Morrow was born in the year 1813 [probably 1812]. When she was two weeks old her mother, [Isabella] CRON Harnden, was holding her little daughter on her lap when news came that her husband had been drowned while carrying dispatches across the Niagara River. She fainted, fell forward into the fireplace [and] was burned to death. So little Mary was left an orphan at two weeks. She had a brother John who was a little older than she.

John and Isabella had the following children:

+ 24 F vii Mary Ann Harnden was born 1812 and died 13 Feb 1886.

4. Harriet (Elizabeth) Harnden (Jonathan ) was born 1760 in Connecticut. She died 11 May 1846 in Haldimand, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada.

Harriet married Nathan (Nathaniel) BRADLEY, son of George BRADLEY and Susannah PIERCE, about 1777 in New York. Nathan was born Jul 1754 in Abington, Plymouth, MA. He died 1833 in Haldimand, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada.

The Mass. birth records for Nathan list his birth date as July 33, 1754, so it's anyone's guess what the correct day is in July of that year.

Almost all of the Bradley lines written here come through the kindness of Linda Ueland. She sent me a very nice workbook on the Bradley family, and I transcribed a lot of it.

Additional Notes on Nathan's family are from Rosemary Channel via Linda:

Eddystone Church records: "Nathan and Elizabeth Bradley in the early part of the last one ___ being early in the present century moved from the states around the head of Lake Ontario, with his family in a wagon and driving his flock following the lake shore around ___ woods. And was three weeks on his journey. He settled a few miles north of his church (Eddystone) with is wife and family. They joined the church in 1802 (United) in February, age 46 and became a member. Tradition has it that Nathan and Elizabeth Bradley came from Illinois with first born William. They were burned out by Indians and they crossed the river carrying their young son in their arms as they waded across. They probably settled for a time in Niagra Co., NY.

Nathan and Harriet had the following children:

+ 25 M i William Harnden BRADLEY was born 16 May 1778 and died 7 Dec 1861.
26 F ii Cynthia BRADLEY was born about 1780 in New York.

+ 27 M iii Lemuel H. BRADLEY was born 1782 and died 6 Jun 1865.
+ 28 M iv Oliver N. BRADLEY was born about 1784.
+ 29 F v Susanna BRADLEY was born about 1786.
+ 30 F vi Hannah (Henna) BRADLEY was born 1790.
+ 31 F vii Mary (Polly) BRADLEY was born 4 Jun 1791 and died 9 Apr 1862.
+ 32 M viii Hamilton (Jonathan) BRADLEY was born 1795.
33 M ix Nathan BRADLEY was born 1800 in Haldimand, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada.

Highland Cemetery, Highland Township, Oakland County, Michigan:

A. W. Eddy, served in the War of 1812 [Durant's Oakland County History gives the establishment of Highland Cemetery in 1849 and the first burial being that of Harden Eddy.] This Harden Eddy was the son of Allen W. EDDY, b. Mar. 23, 1793 in Rutland Co, VT; d. July 28, 1878 in Milford MI. His mother was Clorinda Castle...see p. 294 The Eddy Family in America. Harden was b. June 17, 1831 and died Oct. 4, 1849.

Harnden married Nancy Purdy, daughter of Benjamin Sr Purdy and UNKNOWN, on 9 Apr 1815 in Eddystone, Ontario, CAN. Nancy was born 1 Jun 1797 in New York. She died 6 Sep 1878 in Eddystone Cemetery, Eddystone, Ontario, CAN.

***Use Nancy's parental relationship with caution. A number of researchers are still trying to prove Nancy's parents.***

The IGI lists a Nancy Purdy born 1797 in Westchester, NY daughter of Roger and Ann Purdy. Another IGI listing shows a Nancy Purdy born c. 1798 who married a "Harding" Eddy. The book, "Eddy Family in America" shows Harnden's wife as Nancy Purdy, but no parents of Nancy are mentioned. Roger and Ann Purdy as the parents is doubtful as this family was in Westchester after 1815. We know that a number of Purdy's from Westchester, NY went to Canada after the American Revolution. Nancy was born in 1797, the census notes she was born in the US. Harnden and his family went to Canada sometime between 1803 and 1815. A sister of Harnden's, Dorcas, married a Benjamin Purdy, possibly a brother to Nancy. This Benjamin may be descended from Francis Purdy through Joseph5, Obadiah and Phoebe Underhill4, Joseph3, Joseph2, Francis1. This Benjamin Purdy and his wife, Dorcas Eddy, shown in the 1871 census living with a Hiram and Nancy Brisbin (both born in 1830) - Nancy is probably their daughter. Was she named after Benjamin's sister Nancy? More recent information places Benjamin, b. 1792 as born in Vermont.

A Joshua Purdy is listed as an early settler of Haldimand Twp. being granted land along with Bays Eddy. A "Jos." and Caleb Purdy are early grantees in Hamilton Twp. In the list of Residents in 1797 are listed Joseph Purdy Lot 3 1st concession; Gilbert Purdy Lot 4 1st concession; Gilbert Purdy Lot 4 2nd concession; Joseph Purdy, Jr. Lot 28 2nd concession [Taken from the Report of the Department of Public Records and Archives of Ontario 1930 and Report of the Department of Public Records and Archives of Ontario 1931. Taken from the original reports of Asa Danforth and Aaron Greeley June 17, 1797 and Sept 1, 1797.]

A Nancy P. Eddy is listed in Middlesex County, Massachusetts Probate Index, 1871-1909 (Part A-K):
Eddy Nancy P. Providence R.I. 1879 Administration 3307

Judd Bacon believes that Nancy McLaren is the d. of Peter McLaren and Mercy?. A Peter McLaren b. c. 1750 married Mercy Buell (b. October 15, 1753 in Marlborough, Hartford Co, CT) and had at least one daughter, Mercy McLaren. Is Nancy McLaren another daughter? Mercy Buell's 2nd husband was Samuel Wright. They married in Montreal, Ontario, Canada on March 07, 1784. Mercy Buell had a brother William who was supposedly the founder of Brockville (Elizabethtown). (See: History of Leeds and Grenville Chapter XLIV page 181.) Brockville is located just across the St. Lawrence from Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence Co, NY where children of Mercy BUELL McLAREN and her second husband, Samuel WRIGHT are found. Hello fellow Harnden researchers:

James Harnden, son of Ziba Harnden, was living with his wife Olive Dewey up in Haldimand, Ontario, where they had several children.

In the 1861 Census, James and Olive were not included in the Haldimand Census, but Emma Richards and her new husband, Robert Boucher, were in a house and were taking care of James and Olive Harnden's six children, aged 14 down to 1. This must have been quite an undertaking for Emma, because she was only 15 years old herself!

Emma Richards Boucher's mother was Emily Harnden, James Harnden's sister. Ziba was their father.

Anyway in 1861, James and Olive were away somewhere. By the 1871 Haldimand Census, James Harnden is listed as "deaf and dumb."

My question is, do any of you know what happened to James to make the census taker list him this way? Was he away in 1861 because of some accident he suffered? Is that what caused him to be deaf and dumb, or did he have a stroke or something similar?

If any of you know the answer to this question, I'd greatly appreciate hearing from you. Actually, it would be nice to hear from any of you, anyway.

The information on Clinton's lines come from Alice Enfield.

Clinton married Mary Elizabeth RAYMOND. Mary was born 13 Feb 1824 in Warren Co., N.Y.. She died 23 Jun 1896.

From Alice Enfield:

(Research):An unknown as yet researcher has identified Mary as Mary Elizabeth Harden and gives a birth and death date and states that Mary was Clinton's cousin. I am incorporating this information into my program and will check further into it. Thus far I have found no definite proof for her death and birth dates or ancestry only what I have found on the censuses and a marriage license. The 1880 census, if correct, would place her year of birth as either 1820 or 1821 for she is 59 and Clinton would of been born either 1816 or 1817 as he is 63.

The following about Samuel is from Ken Harnden:

In 1816 he was constable in the Town of Mentz, Cayuga Co., NY

In March 1837 was constable of the Town of Mentz, Cayuga Co., NY and served as president in 1839, 1842 and 1843.
From History of Cayuga County, New York by Elliot G Storke.

From Geraldine Oakley's book:
"Charlotte Peacock Mahagan remembers that she was taught that Samuel's father was also named Samuel. He was the son of Samuel Harnden of Johnsburg in present day Warren Co., NY, but which
was in Washington Co., NY until 1810 when Warren Co., NY was formed.

He operated the Lock Store on the original Erie Canal in Port Byron at one time, and had a livery business there. The store was operated only while the canal ran through the village of Port Byron, not after the canal bed was moved north of the village. The NY census of 1855 says he had lived in Port Byron for 43 years, so he would have arrived there about 1812. He was usually described as a harness maker and shoe maker, probably taught the trade by his father who was a shoemaker and harness maker, and a trade which Samuel Jr taught to his sons.

Two account books from his businesses remain. One is from the store
and the other reflects his business as a shoemaker. These are held in
1999 by Geraldine Oakley."

Samuel married (1) Asenath HIGLEY, daughter of Seth HIGLEY and Lucy HOLCOMBE, on 1814 in Cayuga, New York. Asenath was born 15 Mar 1791 in Ballston, Saratoga, New York. She died Bet. 1821 - 1830.

Notes for Asenath from Ken Harnden:

Geraldine Oakley's book:

"Her parents were Seth Higley and Lucy Holcombe, daughter of Lord and Lady Holcombe of England and their children were Samuel, Seba, Enos, Prilla, Desire, Asenath and Minerva. Seth Higley was born 29 Oct 1746, married in 1768, enlisted in War of the Revolution in 1776 in the 18th regiment under Lt. Job Case. He settled in Port Byron, NY in 1779 and died there in 1829. Information about Asenath and her parents, their children and Samuel and Asenath's children was
obtained from a typed sheet found in family papers that had been owned by Marjorie Peacock Lockwood and had originated with Hazel Lane Harnden. In 1999 that paper is owned by Geraldine Lockwood Oakley."

Samuel and Asenath had the following children:

97 F i Lucy Ann Harnden was born about 1815. She died before 1880.

99 M iii Simon Harnden was born 3 Oct 1818 in Cayuga, New York. He died 14 Oct 1901 in Allegan Twp. Allegan, Michigan and was buried in Hudson Corners Cemetery, Allegan Co., MI.

Notes for SIMON Harnden from Ken Harnden:

Some researchers state that Simon had a daughter Laura Cecilia, but there have been no facts found to support this.

"Simon Harnden, a farmer on section 7, Allegan Township, Allegan
County, is the possessor of forty acres of good land. He came to Michigan in 1852, and stopped for a short time in Ionia County; he lived in Hillsdale County two years and then came to this county, living in Pine Plains for awhile and, in 1866, came to this township and purchased his present farm. He was born in Cayuga County, NY, 3 October 1818. Samuel and Asenath (Highley) Harnden, natives of New York, were the parents of our subject. The father was a boot and shoemaker and lived and died in New York. He was a Democrat in politics, held the office of Postmaster, and was, in religion, a member of the Univeralist Church. He was the parent of five children. Enos and our subject are now living.

Simon Harnden received his education in his native county and
learned the trade of a shoemaker which he followed for a number of years in the East and also since coming to Michigan. He was Trustee of the village of Port Byron, in his native county. He was married, in 1841, to Maretta Harrington, the daughter of Ebenezer and Emily (Mentor) Harrington, natives of Massachusetts. Mr. Harrington was a carriagemaker, and later in life removed to Cayuga County, NY, where he followed his trade until death. His good wife bore him five children: Almira (Mrs. Harnden) and Calista (Mrs. Storey) are now living. He was a Whig in politics.

Our subject and his wife are the happy parents of eight children,
all living, whose record is as follows: Almira, now Mrs. George
Whitney, is the mother of two children, Laura and Glenn; Romain married Mary Peet and is the father of two sons, Lester and Clarence; Lucy married Robert McQueen and they have eight children, John, Willie, Alice, James, Grover, Nellie, Martin and Charles; Sophia, Mrs. Howard Powers, has become the mother of two daughters, Belle and Minn; Lester married Carrie Rich, and two children have been born to them, Rich, and Elma; Alice, Mrs. Bliss, has two children, Roy and Rhoda; Charles is in the grocery business at Battle Creek, his brother-in-law, Mr. Bliss being his partner, under the firm name of Bliss & Harnden; Emily, Mrs. August Swedberg, is the mother of one child, Alice. Mr. Swedberg is an editor at Battle Creek. Mr Harnden, of whom we write, has a fine home with all modern conveniences and does a general farming business on his place,
in which he is quite successful. He belongs to the Democratic party."

Portrait and Biographical Record of Kalamazoo, Allegan and Van Buren
Counties, Michigan, 1892.

Almira Harrington, sister of Marietta, also married a Harnden. Who?

Simon was a trustee of the Village of Port Byron, NY in May 1844.

"Simon and Mrs Marietta Harnden were admitted by profession to
Congregational Church in 1861."

101 F v Sarah Harnden was born 1814 in New York. She died 3 Mar 1874.

Sarah may have married a second time to Charles H. Griggs.

There is a Sarah Harnden in Springbrook Cemetery in Cayuga Co., N.Y.
(1875-1949) wife of Griggs (1865-1951)

Notes for SARAH Harnden from Ken Harnden:

Could this be Sally Ann listed by Susette Newberry?
If so, she died 3 Mar 1874.

Geraldine Oakley's book:

"In some records she is called Sally Ann
Harnden. She was alive at the time of her grandfather, Seth Higley's death in Sept 1830."

Sarah married Joel P. MILLINER. Joel was born 1812 in Cortland Co., New York. He died 1886 in Adams Basin, Monroe, New York.

Samuel also married (2) Desiree after 1821.

Notes for Desiree from Ken Harnden:

Geraldine Oakley's book:

"According to family tradition, she was an older sister of Asenath Higley, who was Samuel's first wife. This is doubtful, since Desire Higley seems to have been married to another person at that time. They did not have any children."

Samuel also married (3) Laura Cecilia Harnden, daughter of Joshua Harnden and Lefa (Lesa) PIDGE, on 9 May 1837 in Granville, Washington, New York. Laura was born 22 May 1805 in Granville, Washington, New York. She died 27 Mar 1892 in Port Byron, Mentz, Cayuga, New York and was buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Port Byron, Cayuga Co., NY.

Notes for Laura from Ken Harnden:

Laura was born a Harnden, and married her first cousin. This was
always mentioned in conversations about Laura and Samuel by their
descendants.

She was called Laurie or Lorie.

Geraldine Oakley's book:

"Family history is that Laura packed up her
worldly goods in a wooden chest and left home in Granville, went south to the Albany area, and took a packet boat on the Erie Canal west to Port Byron. The chest that she used is now held by Geraldine Oakley. Eventually, she married Samuel, and stayed in Port Byron for the remainder of her life. According to census she must have arrived in Port Byron about 1837. She had 3 sons that did not live before her son Jonathan was born. Franklin was born 5 June 1838 and died 6 Oct 1839. An infant was born 9 Mar 1840 and died in Sept of that year. A third infant was born 27 Aug 1841 and died on 18 Sep 1841. These births are reflected in the 1865 census report.

Samuel and Laura had the following children:

Jonathan married Martha Delphene YOUNG on 5 Feb 1877 in Cuyahoga, New York. Martha was born 21 Mar 1853 in Auburn, Cayuga, New York. She died 12 Sep 1910 in Port Byron, Mentz, Cayuga, New York and was buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Port Byron, Cayuga Co., NY.

18. Hosea Barrachiah Harnden "Kia" (John S. , Jonathan ) was born 12 Feb 1782 in Granville, Washington, New York. He died 24 Jan 1854 in Sandusky TWP, Crawford County, Ohio.

Hosea is another one of those who's name gets all mixed up and has several variations. He has been listed as Hosea, Barrachiah and Kiah, just to name a few. I think his name was probably something like Hezekiah. In later years I think he got tired of people messing up his name and settled on Hosea.

Military minutes of the Council of Appointment of the State of New York, 1783-1821 Vol. 1 & 2.

Hosea (Kiah) Barrachiah Harnden (1782)
1809-1812 Paymaster, 2nd Battalion, 4th Regiment of Artillery, Washington Co., NY

From Jean Carmean:

I ran across this information in my online travels>

OHIO STATEWIDE FILES - Know your Ohio: Norwich --Part 3-- Norwich Settlement--

During the summer of 1817, Hosea Harnden began life on lot thirty-seven, section two, later owned by John S. Hester...

NORWICH TOWNSHIP Early Beginnings http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohhuron/townorwich.html

...The first school house was built in the spring of 1819 on the east bank of Slate run. This cabin was quite primitive, built of logs, and covered with elm bark. It measured twelve by sixteen feet in size. It had neither floor, windows or desks. A row of split oak benches served for seating, and the unchinked spaces between the logs served as windows. Miss Aurilla Lindsey taught the first term of school in the summer of 1819. Her pupils were: Phoebe Chapman; Mrs. Martha Cook (the new bride); her two sisters, Eleanor and Betsey Fletcher; Sabin Kellogg; Louisa Ellis; Mansfield and Brazilda Cook; and Hosea and Drazilla Harnden. The school was supported by subscription, and proved so expensive that no attempt was made to build another until 1824.

Kia married Mary HARRINGTON. Mary was born 1786 in Massachusetts. She was buried in Wales Corner Cemetery, Clyde, Ohio.

They had the following children:

103 M i Hosea Harnden was born 1804 in
