Edward J Hickey - St Johns, Newfoundland

I am the grandson of Edward J Hickey, born in St John's Newfoundland in the late 1880s; died and buried in New Jersey in 1954. He had a brother David, who I believe later settled in Connecticut. As a young man,Edward worked the steam ships going from St John's down the coast to Brooklyn. He eventually settled in Newark/Jersey City. He served in the US 57th Pioneer Infantry in France during WWI. He worked as a Trolley Motorman in Newark and later as a bus driver, while living in Irvington , NJ. He was married twice, first wife died before WWI, second wife was Martha Smyth of Grannard, County Longford, Ireland. They had two chilldren, Edward and Christine as well as Genevieve, Edward's daughter from his first marriage.I'm particularly interested in any information on Edward's predecessors in Newfoundland and when they came from Ireland.
As one of sixteen living grandchildren of Edward, we would also appreciate hearing from any of his brother David's Family. My E-Mail address is posted in the heading of this message. Please respond. All the Best.

Hickey Families on Long Island - need connection

Grandmother was Marian Flanagan (maiden name Hickey) who died in 1981 at age of 108 on Long Island. As a boy I knew there were many Hickey families on Long Island that we were related too, but I have lost contact with all of them. The Hickey's came from County Westmeath, specifically the Town of Mullingar, where the extended family was involved in the cattle and butchery businesses. The Hickeys maintained the primary butcher shop in Mullingar for years and years on St. Austin's Street. The family I remember lived in Oyster Bay LI and was headed by Thomas Christopher Hickey (who was named for both an uncle (Thomas) and the uncle's son (Christopher) who were killed in the Easter Rising in 1916 @ the Dublin Post Office.

Anybody out there have a connection with these Long Island Hickey's...there were many, many families (my father had 40 Hickey first cousins), and I know there names but have no knowledge of their children....

If anyone could help verify some of these root lines for me it would be very helpful. If Edward (from Ireland) is the father of Thomas, and grandfather of jacob then I am on the right track and have reached back 5 generations and back into the homeland of Ireland.

Thanks

Bob Hickey
bob.hickey@insightbb.com

Minnie Lee was born in PA 7 Jun 1869. Her mother was Eliza, last name unknown, born in PA Apr 1851. I find them in the 1880 Lancaster, Lancaster, PA census. Her mother has remarried and is listed as Lydia DEUTSCH. Minnie is also listed as a DEUTSCH, however I do not believe that she was ever legally adopted. Sallie HICKEY is living with the family and is probably the sister of Minnie's father.

They are also in the 1900 Lancaster, Lancaster, PA census. Minnie was married to George PIPER and has two daughters that are living with their paternal grandmother in Washington DC. Minnie and Eliza are widows.

Minnie and her mother moved to Washington DC where Minnie married George GERTMAN.

Any information about Minnie's parents would be appreciated.

Hickeys in Davisburgh (Springfield) Oakland County Michigan

I am researching this line, if anyone sees any connections would like to share information.

This blurb is from the History of Oakland County, Michigan. Author: Durant, Samuel W. Publication Info: Philadelphia,: L. H. Everts & co., 1877. Page 280

The Village of Davisburgh

… In 1857 village lots were laid out by John C. Cornelius, and James H. Davis, J.C. Davis being the principle proprietor. Michael G. Hickey platted an addition in 1865; … Major M. Hickey, in May, 1866; …

… The first store of any consequence was kept by John C. Davis, who carried on an extensive business for the time. His store was in one part of his grist mill, and he finally sold the stock to M. and A. Hickey, both now deceased. The Messrs. Hickey built the first regular store building, which is now standing, and occupied as a hardware store by O.C. Thompson.

… Soon after the Rebellion of 1861-65, A.J. Hickey built the frame block on the east side of the river. In the lower story are several store-rooms, and the upper floor contains a public hall, known as “Hickey’s hall.”

…A foundry was established in 1865 by William Hickey for the manufacture of agricultural implements. Mr. Hickey is still the proprietor, and carries on the business alone, the average value of the yearly productions of the foundry about ten or twelve hundred dollars. The room in which the casting is done is small, and contains but one moulding-floor. Mr. Hickey manufactures cultivators, land-rollers, scrapers etc., and finishes them ready for use.

Myron Hickey was the first one of the family who located in Davisburg, and for a year and a half or two years after his arrival he was employed as clerk in Mr. Davis’ store at the mill. He and his brother Andrew finally purchased the entire stock of Davis, and removed it to the building they had erected for store purposes. Their father, Michael G. Hickey, originally from the town of Phelps, Ontario county, New York, and afterwards of Cuyahoga county, Ohio, removed with his family to Oakland County, Michigan, in 1839-40, and settled in Waterford township. In 1845 he removed to White Lake township, and lived there until 1862-63, when he came to Davisburgh, where his sons, Myron, Andrew and Wilson, had previously located. These sons all served in the Federal army during the Rebellion, -- Andrew in the Third Michigan Cavalry, Myron in the Fifth Michigan Cavalry, and Wilson with General Kilpatrick, in the quartermaster’s department (Army of the Potomac). Michael G. Hickey died August 17, 1878, aged sixty-four years; his wife is yet living, at the age of sixty-five.

In the cemetery at Davisburgh the following are among the persons whose remains are there at rest: Myron G. Hickey, died August 24, 1868, aged thirty-five years; Lieutenant Andrew Hickey, died at Jackson, Tennessee, February 16, 1863, aged twenty-eight…
They had 3 children; Stephen J. b. 1854 in the US, Hannah b. 1858 in Ontario, Canada and Mary Ann b. 1860 in Ontario, Canada. I believe James Hickey had a brother, Owen who was married to Mary Regan, a sister of Ellen. James and Ellen are buried in the St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery, in Perth County, Ontario. Ellen Regan was born in County Cork, Ireland so believe the Hickey's may have been from the same area.
Would love to hear from anyone that might have a connection to this family.

More information on Iowa Deverys

I believe they are separate from the Minnesota clan. My great grandfather was John Devery, born around 1810-1820 in Ireland, probably King's County. His parents are said to be Michael Devery and Bridget Whalen. There is an Owen Devery who farmed very close to him, and recently I found a land purchase that they made on the same day, which increases my belief that Owen and John were relatives, but there is not enough age spread to be father/son, and anyway, Owen appears in an early census with an older man, James, who is probably his father, and brothers Martin and Michael. Michael was aparently married to a Mary Dailey of New Jersey. Owen was married to Ann Curran. John was married to Eliza Creehan. I am interested in finding out the relationship between John and Owen. I suspect they are cousins or uncle/nephew. Thanks for any help. mg

Maurice Hickey 1840-1902 Allegheny Co PA

I'm looking for the parents of Maurice Hickey, my 2nd great grandfather (sometimes called Morris).

He was married to Virginia Roselma Barnard and Mary Frances Young. Maurice came from Limerick, Ireland and served in the 1st US Cavalry during the Civil War.

There is another thread about Hickeys from Homestead, which is also in Allegheny. Those Hickeys are also from Limerick, so there must be some connection. Just wish I could find it!

From obituary in Pittsburgh Press, Nov 23, 1902:

Maurice J. Hickey, 63 years old, one of the best-known men in Allegheny county, died yesterday afternoon very suddenly of heart failure, at his home, 442 Rosedale avenue, Brushton. He was the first burgess of Brushton, before that borough was annexed to Pittsburg, and served five years there as justice of the peace. Although a native of Ireland, he was prominently identified with the Protestant churches of Pittsbufg, and was one of the organizers of the Hamilton Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church, of which Rev. B. B. Wolf is now pastor and who will conduct the funeral services.

Mr. Hickey was a member of the regular army for 18 years, having been prominent among the soldiers of the First United States Cavalry. When the Civil War came on he enlisted with a Pennsylvania company and served throughout the war with distinction. For the past 30 years he has been assistant manager for the Howe-Brown Co., now merged with the Crucible Steel Co., and had been a resident of Brushton for 14 years, having removed to Allegheny county from Beaver Falls many years ago.

Deceased was a member of the Roayl Arcanum, Knights of Pythias, Odd Fellows and the Major W. G. Lowry Post G. A. R. No 548. He is survived by two children by his first wife - Ed Hickey of Millvale, and Mrs. Ida Kelley of 32 Rosedale avenue, Brushton. Four children, all living, from his second marriage survive, as follows: Harry Y., Virginia R., Samuel B. and Frank C. Mrs Hickey is prostrated over the sudden death of her husband, and the intelligence of his death has been received with sorrow by his wide circle of friends. The funeral arrangements have not yet been completed , but the interment will take place at Homewood cemetery, in the family lot, next Monday afternoon.
My father is Thomas P. Hickey (born 11/6/1920). His father James Hickey died circa 1925. We have a baptism certificate showing a Thomas Hickey as a sponsor (dated 11/28/1920). Baptism performed at St. Michael's church in Jersey City, New Jersey. We would like information on this Thomas Hickey (suspect he was my father's uncle). The family lived in Hudson County New Jersey area. Believe this Thomas Hickey would have been between 35 and 50 at this time.

Hickey Descendants - Oak Lawn, IL Area

I'm looking to connect with Hickey descendants from this area who were born with the surname Hickey but were raised without a father with the Hickey name.

I am sure that this sounds like an odd query, but while tracking this family, I have recently learned that Donald S. Hickey who was divorced from his first wife Theresa, may have also fathered other children during the years 1955-1965 and possibly later. He died in 1992 in Worth, IL.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who fits this rather "unique" profile. Please respond here or off-board to my email address.

Thank you for your help.

Donna Hodach-Price

IRE to Brooklyn, NY HICKEYs

Hi all,
Here's the little bits of info I know about my HICKEY family.... Maybe someone, somewhere along the line will connect with it.

Mathew OR Thomas HICKEY was born about 1819 somewhere in Ireland.
He married (probably before 1839)
Margaret OR Ann DWYER - born about 1819 somewhere in Ireland
I only know of two children born to this couple. Each one's death ctf gives different first names for their mother and father.
1. Ann HICKEY - born 16 NOV 1839 in Ireland, died 1917 in Brooklyn, NY. She Married Timothy CLANCY and settled in Brooklyn, NY
Their children- all born Brooklyn, NY:

Mary Jane CLANCY - 1858-1921

Mathew - 1860 - 1882

Margaret 1864 - ?

Mickel 1865 -1885

Katie E 1869 - after 1892

Ellen 1871 - ?

John T 1873 - 1903

Annie 1876 - 1934

Agnes 1879 - ?
2. Ellen HICKEY born about 1841 in Ireland, died 1915 in Brooklyn. She had married and was widow of a man with the surname MURRY when she died. I don't know whether they had children or not.
