Have come across your name through the Tweed Historical Society and would like to swap information on the Hircock family.
I am the great granddaughter of Thomas Hircock who married Ann Sophia Downs. I believe he is the uncle of the Thomas in your family line.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards
Diane

Hi Martin,
Yes I recall the entry in the census showing them living together and the connection also.

What year of birth do you have for the Elizabeth Hircock that married William Tegerdine?

I'm just trying to locate my info on Henry in relation to when and what ship he arrived in Aus on, but I'm having a filing problem, oops. I do know he only arrived two or three years before he married though and the marriage was in 1887, so he must have arrived some time after your James.

What can I help you with?

My personal email is meg@samford.net

Regards, Megan

Hi Jim,
yeah I saw that, figured they may have been giving the census taker a hard time if they were two 19 year olds. But it would be great if you can cofirm that. Henry is a bit of a mystery.
Regards, Megan

hello there, as far as I have found there are ywo spellings depending on the record taker. you have hircock and sometimes hercock .on exploration of records they usually relate to the same family. I did see a reference somewhere that there could be a hugenot connection but I have not found it yet. I am descended from the hircocks in wisbech back to abiut 1750. I am in sheffield england. what is your connection? cliff hircock

Gosh Meg, there must be a link between us!! I have had limited contact with John McLean Hircock who lives in Sydney - I think he is descended from a Thomas Hircock born in Cambridgeshire in the 1800's (I haven't been able to work out which one - I have about 10 Thomas Hircock's born in the 1800's in my tree!!) who must have come out to Australia at some stage (as did my g/g/grandfather Thomas Hircock) - perhaps they were cousins or something? I wonder if you are linked somehow to him too? John is not well and I haven't heard back from him in a while so I haven't been able to establish the exact connection yet.

My Thomas was born in 1862 in Wisbech. I am still trying to find out when he came out to Australia. He married an Aussie girl (Ann Downs) in Brisbane in 1882 at the age of 20, so I imagine it was sometime around the late 1870's.

Anyway, keep in touch. I'd love to find a link between us. Whereabouts in Brissie are you? If you prefer, email me at stevenicole@optusnet.com.au

Regards, Nicole

Hi Nicole,
yes, I had found Henry on the 1881 census too, that's where I found that he was born in Wisbech, previously I just had him being born in Cambridgeshire without that detail. Yeah, the name does seem kind of coincidental, but I don't know. I spoke to my mum and she doesn't recall Grandma talking of any relations from her side, but perhaps they lost touch - Henry died in the 1920's, so it was a long time ago. Cliff was just telling me that he had found a Henry who was 9 years old on the 1871 census (that I haven't been able to access) living with his mother and grandparents - suggests maybe illegitimate? But if this is my Henry, then Cliff says there is a definite relation as Henry's grandparents (that he was living with) are Cliff's (I think) GGGrandparents. He is looking into it further I think, which is great. And yes, I am in Australia and in Brisbane too!

Hi Meg and Cliff.

Meg, I have found reference to Henry Hircock in the 1881 Census, aged 19. His occupation was listed as stonemason and birth year 1862 in Wisbech, so it seems likely this is your Henry! He was living with a William Tegerdine (also aged 19) at Walsoken, Norfolk. Perhaps they were flatting together?

Also, I have spoken to my dad since our last correspondence and confirmed that his mothers name was Agnes LAVINA Hircock, not LAVINIA, as in your relation. Even so, it still seems very coincidental anyway doesn't it?

Regards, Nicole
PS: Do you live in Australia? I am in Brisbane

Hi Cliff, thanks for the assist, it is much appreciated. Not quite sure what you mean about first from England? Henry was the first Hircock that I know of to arrive in Australia. He came to Sydney in 1885 after completing an apprenticeship in England and then a couple of years in Europe working as a monumental mason. He was here 2 years when he married Agnes Lavinia Jessett at Bathurst, but ... I think he must have known her in England, because she came out by herself and was staying at the Methodist Parsonage in Bathurst until they married a short time after her arrival. Agnes was born in 1868 at Edgecumbe, Cornwall. The ived in the gatekeepers cottage at Edgecumbe Castle, but she must have been living in London for a while prior to her departure to Aus as there is a Bible with an inscription from the Girls Friendly Society at Wimbledon. That's probably neither here nor there, just trying to work out where Henry may have been prior to Aus. Regards, Megan

Hi Cliff, yes I recall seeing that entry in the census, and there were earlier ones too, which is where I think I made the connection to Wisbech. There really isn't a lot of info on Henry. It's odd, my Grandma never spoke very much of her parents, perhaps because they had died so very long ago. I haven't been able to find a birth for Henry despite searching through all the Hircocks born in the 5 years either side of 1862 on free bdm. But he is definitely down as being born in Cambridgeshire on the family records, so I'm assuming there's a relationship there somewhere. Appears to be a very large family. If you should come across anything, please let me know. Regards, Megan.

His mother was Jean Hircock, father unknown. Jean's sister Ann was married twice the second time to George Lilley a farmer at Upwell. Jean and Ann were apparently born at Emneth but no record has been found.
Thomas George and Alice are my ancestors.

Thanks in advance
Jim Whittome
Victoria, BC, Canada
whittome@direct.ca
Hi Nicole,
no, I don't know anything about John, his name was just listed on the death registration as the father of Henry, no mothers name though. Just seems a bit coincidental, perhaps they were cousins? Thanks for the link, I will go investigate. Don't really know much about this side at all. My Dad has only recently passed away, but we had talked about his Mum's side and he just didn't know a lot, unlike his Dad's side. Probably because his Mum was an only child and there was no other family around - Agnes passed away before my Dad was born and Henry died when Dad was just a baby, so there is no anecdotal stuff. Anyway, thanks again and I will keep ferreting.
Regards, Megan

Hi Megan
Thanks for your message. What a coincidence with Agnes!! I don't have a Henry Hircock in my tree (so far) - but that's not to say he's not related to my Hircock's - my tree is far from complete!! They all seem to have come from Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. I do however have a few John Hircock's in my tree - do you know his DOB?

There is a great website run by a relation of mine in the USA - Descendants of Thomas Hircock (1725). The web address is: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cliffbeall/rept-hir...
Have a look - you might be able to find some link to your family there.

Please get back to me if you think there is a link between us.
Regards, Nicole

Hi Geoffrey,
Have only recently starting looking at this line of my tree and I have come to a bit of a dead end. So was wondering if you may be able to help. I have a Henry Hircock born 1862 in Cambridgeshire. Apparently (and I mean that loosely) his parents were farmers in "The Wash" and his father's name may have been John. He was a stone and monumental mason and spent a couple of years in Europe after completing his apprenticeship. He then came to Australia in 1885. He married an Agnes Lavinia Jessett in 1887 and they had one living child, Grace (my Grandma). They took her back to England in 1897/98 to show her off to the grandparents. There were photos taken in London. Do you have any knowledge of Henry?? Regards, Megan.

Hi Nicole,
I just saw your msg when I was trying to research my Hircock branch. It was kind of weird. I have an Agnes Lavinia Hircock in my tree, but her maiden name was Jessett. She was born in 1868 in England and married Henry Hircock in 1887 at Bathurst NSW. I have been having trouble finding Henry's birth, but I know he was born in 1862 somewhere in Cambridgeshire. I believe his parents were farmers in "The Wash" and his fathers name was John. I found him in some census records, living in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire when he was around 19. I just had a look on the NSW bdm and saw your Agnes. Was wondering if perhaps there may be a relationship and she might have been named after my Agnes or something??? Henry was a stonemason and monumental mason. Henry and Agnes had 3 children, but the older two died in infancy. My grandma was born in 1892 and lived to 93 years. As I say, I haven't been able to actually find Henry's birth, and I'm not positive of his fathers name, it's just been put on the death cert. but I don't know whether it was just a guess. What do you think? Regards, Megan

Dear Cliff - I have just started researching my family tree and have read your message. I think we are related!!

I am also descended from Peter Hircock & Elizabeth Culy of Wisbeach, England (my great-great-grandparents). The only info I know so far is that they had a son Thomas (1852 - 4.6.1925) who married Ann Sophia Downs in Brisbane Australia on 17.4.1882. Thomas and Ann had 8 children, one of which was Agnes Lavina Hircock, my grandmother . Agnes married John Long. Agnes and John had 5 children, one of which was Kevin, my father.

I would really love to hear from you and would appreciate sharing information with you about our family trees!
Regards
Nicole Smith

My grandmother was Lois HERCOCK, definately from this family and I have Elizabeth Horspole and a little bit more. If you are following this line, would you like to converse on this. I have just written to Keith Booth that has been mentioned who is in the same country as me. Thanks, Audrey, New Zealand

Dear Heather
Fascinated to read the story of your great grandfather, although I cannot claim to have established any direct relation to myself.

I know of many Hercocks/Hircocks descended from Henry Hercock who was born at Kingscliffe, Northamptonshire in 1774 and had 12 children with Elizabeth nee Horspole. This family seems to have dispersed to many parts of England (inc. London, Cambridgeshire Yorkshire and Leicester) and to New Zealand.

The two spellings of the name were interchangeable right up into the 1900s and I have seen members of my fathers family with both spellings in various documents.

I was born in Leicester in 1947 although I now live in Wales. I am currently researching to find a connection to the above family.

Hello Heather, thanks for your last Post. I am also a beginner at Family History research but am starting to get into it - it becomes an obsession after a while! Unfortunately my time is limited and I have not yet been able to tour the country inspecting records - although I am planning to visit the Northamptonshire county records in the next few weeks.

There are 243 Hercocks/Hircocks listed for England on the Mormons website www.familysearch.org. Of these a large proportion relate to Laxton and Kingscliffe in Northamptonshire between about 1740 and 1850. These are small villages about 5 miles apart so the area must have been thick with Hercocks at the time. As far as I can find out through local contacts and Electoral records, there is now only one Hercock remaining in Kingscliffe.

Henry and Elizabeth (Horspole also seems to have been a common name in the area at the time) and their many children are listed on www.familysearch.org although it is a little tricky piecing the records together - hence my proposed trip to Northampton.

The family has been thoroughly researched, however, by Keith Booth of Hamilton New Zealand. Keith has traced the Hercock line in that country back to Charles William, son of Henry and Elizabeth, who was born at Kingscliffe in 1811 and emigrated to New Zealand in 1856 after living in London for a few years.

My records are a bit of a mess at the moment but I'll happily share them with you when they have been tidied up.

I don't know anything of the Huguenot story, although I am aware that the name is French in origin. the earliest Hercocks listed on the Mormons site are in London in the 1630s which is about the right date, so this may well be true.

Do you have any more details of your Great Pop's ancestry? I may be able to research a little further back.

Geoff

I have a plethora of Hircocks in my family tree. My Great Pop, Ernest James "Jerry" Hircoe was born a Hircock in Enfield, London England in 1896. He told me the family originally came from France. They fled because of Huguenot persecution in the 1600s. They lived in Northamptonshire for awhile. Eventually (not sure when), my Great Pop's line wound up in Enfield. My Great Pop's father was Charles Hircock. He married a lass named Fanny Eastwick. They had at least 6 children: Ernest, Edward, Horace, Herbert, Gladys, and Florence.

Ernest married May James, daughter of a wealthy Bristol man. They had two daughters: Kathleen May (my grandmother) and Betty. They moved to America in the late 1920s. Due to harassment by unsavoury sorts, they changed the name from Hircock to Hircoe. My Great Pop was the most wonderful & fascinating man! He survived WWI after having two fingers blown off. He also survived a 50 year smoking habit and an appendectomy in the 1950s. He lived to be a month shy of 104! Pretty impressive. I have since received info that this durability might come from the Eastwick line.

About his siblings: Edward married Nell Ashford. I have no further info on them. Horace may have married a lass named Ann. No further info. Herbert married Ethel and had at least 3 children: Clifford, Trevor, and Audrey. They spell the surname Hercock. Audrey married Ted Upshall. Gladys married Jack Bush and had two children: Jack and Mary. Florence married someone with the surname Bridger & had a daughter Doreen. Doreen married Ron Wainwright and had a son named Philip.

I guess that's all I'll divulge for now. I'd love to hear from anyone who knows and/ or is related to anyone mentioned herein! Thank you for reading! :)

Greetings John, I received your message via the Rootsweb message board on 13 th July and went to Parramatta the next day to search the NSW Births, Marriages and Death Indexes where I found a wealth of information.
I will contact you via your email address rather than the message board.
Regards Wayne McBride

Greetings to Geoff from Leicester, final (?) resting place of Richard III (my other lifelong obssession)! Please forgive me if I write exactly the way I feel which is very excited! It's too wonderful to hear from someone who knows something about Hercocks/ Hircocks from Northamptonshire! I'm pleased that you enjoyed my little Great Pop bio. He deserves a whole book but I'm not equipped for the job!

I would be very glad & grateful if you'd share the info you have on Henry Hercock & Elizabeth Horspole and their descendants. Where did you get this incredible (to me) info? Do you know if they were Huguenot? My Great Pop's father is the furthest back into the Hircock line that I have managed to go. I'm not a good researcher. I just keep hoping someone with the magic connecting pieces will turn up. Perhaps you're that person? :)

The name Hircock always seemed very English to me so I was ready to take my Great Pop's Huguenot story with a grain of salt until I read that Hercock is a form of Hebert, a Huguenot surname. How Hebert translates to Hercock is beyond me but I'll trust the scholars for now. :) Are there any Huguenot stories attached to your family? I don't think I would have learned anything about them if it weren't for Great Pop. I look forward to your reply in the greatest anticipation!

Hi,

I too am researching the Hercock name, my mum is one. So far my Hercocks all come from the Bethnal Green area of London. The earliest one is Jesse who married a Mary Ann (not sure when). They had a son Henry William born 1857. I believe my great uncle traced it back a lot further, but since his death we are not sure what happened to the files!

Hi John , Thank you your email. You may be related to my wife whose grandfather was a Frederick Hircock. I think that I may be able to help. I'm also from Sydney and I have researched the NSW Births Marriages & Deaths Indexes for you with some interesring results. I'll try to contact you via your email address rather than on this public meeting board.
Kindest regards for now, Wayne McBride
