Inga AARSETH: Norway > USA (Related to HORAN/WOODARD)

I am looking for family info, but have very little data to go on...here's what I know...My Gr Grandmother, Inga Aarseth came to US from Norway in early 1900's, with sister Brigitta Aarseth...Inga eventually settled in Washington state (possibly bellignham/Ferndale area) Inga married a man only known to me by last name of Horan...They had three children William, Mildred and Lillian. Lillian is my grandmother. She married a man named Woodard (possibly first name Harlan, Harley) approx 1932 (?) Mr Woodard had red hair, and had been previously married and had a daughter ( or so we believe). This brief marriage resulted in my father, James I Woodard. Mr Woodard supposedly joined military and left marriage. My father had no recollections of his father, and the stories from grandmother (Lillian) were sketchy, and known false. Can anybody add anything to my thin family history? I can find no marriage records for great grandparents or grandparents..Fathers birth certificate does not list full names. cannot find death info on Inga, or any info on Brigittas family? Did my father have any other half siblings? Any info at all is helpful...Thank you

Justin T. Horan ,
Horan, Justin T.

Justin T. Horan
passed away with grace and courage Monday, April 21, 2008. A jovial man with great drive and leadership, he provided 40 years leading chambers of commerce throughout New England to include Manchester, N.H., Newton, Mass., Lawrence/Andover, Mass., Waterbury, Conn., and spent 19 years as president and chief executive officer of the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce. In 1975, the Pittsburgh Chamber leadership made decisions to revitalize the greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce, at which time they recruited Justin T. Horan from Connecticut to reorganize their chamber. During his term, the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber provided meaningful benefits to the members such as transportation, roads and bridges, legislative activities, reducing the Pennsylvania Corporate New Income Tax, government efficiency programs in both Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh, established a regional program to rebuild the locks and dams on the navigable rivers of Pittsburgh, DYNAMO and community promotion resulting in Pittsburgh being named the first city ever as the "Most Livable City in America" while also coining the phrase, "Pittsburgh, the City of Champions." Mr. Horan's professional service led him to the chairmanship of the American Chamber of Commerce Executive Association, ACCE and a position on the board of the United States Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the boards of the former Allegheny Club and La Roche College and recently served as a member on the Executive Committee at the Masonic Village at Sewickley. A graduate of the University of New Hampshire, he served in both the Navy and Army, where he attained the rank of captain.

He leaves his loving wife of 56 years, Helen R. Horan; eight children, Catherine Peters, Carol (Charles) Nardello, Tom (Sandra), Steve (Nancy), Dan (Lisa), Mark, Virginia (Larry) Lewis and Paul (Lori); 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Although his leadership led to a successful professional career, his proudest and most cherished accomplishment was his loving family. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at H.P. BRANDT FUNERAL HOME INC., 1032 Perry Highway, Ross Township, 412-364-4444. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Teresa of Avila Church.
My Horan family was from Chicago, but my grandfather's father (John) died approx 1888 as the story goes from being kick by a horse. He was a teamster. He married Mary Ponsonby and they had two sons Jeremiah who was president of the building service union and my grandfather John Francis. They also had a sister Nell who married a Frank Roach, was born in Oct 1882 My grandfather was born 1/30/1888 and not baptized until 6/2/1888, which was odd for Chicago Catholics unless this was a time when his father was injured.. His mother later remarried a man named David McLeod... Please advise if you have come across any of these names. thanks

Looking for information regarding my g grandmother, Elizabeth Horan. She married James Smith (Son of James and Anna Smith). Elizabeth and James Smith had 3 children: Catherine Smith (my grandmother), Theresa Smith (she was put into a home for children and died at age 1 at that home), and Anna Mae Smith. Not sure if James Smith died or left the family but Elizabeth Horan Smith went on to marry a second time to George Macy. They had 3 children: George Macy, Elizabeth Macy(Dessingue-Hogan) and Charles Macy. I do not have any information on Elizabeth Horan Smith Macy but would like to know if she had any brothers or sisters. If anyone knows, please respond. Thanks.

My great grandmother was Johannah (or Hannah) Horan. She married my great grandfather Thomas O'Connor of Fahaduff, Castleisland, Co. Kerry sometime in the 1840's. My Grandfather was their son, John O'Connor. The only concrete information I have on her is that she had two other sons who went to Australia, Patrick and Terence. I also have her death certificate. She died in Fahaduff on 5 Jan 1909. I think she may have been born in Scartaglen, as there are many Horan familys there.

I'm researching my mother's Irish roots. John and Alice or Ellen HOURIHANE left Cork by 1851 with children Patrick, Mary, Ann, Rose, John, Michael and Margaret all born in Ireland between 1834 and 1848. The girls all married in Wigan and became Mary Kennedy, Ann Glennon, Rose Green and Margaret Farrimond. The youngest, Margaret was my gr gr grandmother. I've searched half of the west cork Catholic parishes and had no luck. Has anyone else come accross this family.

By 1871 they have changed the family name to HORAN which was a common name from Mayo in the Lancashire coalfields at this time.

JOHN HORAN, HOURIHANE

I've just spent three days in Dublin searching for a 'needle in a haystack' for Margaret, daughter of John and Ellise or Ellen Hourihane born somewhere in Cork c. 1847. Her family moved to Wigan, Lancashire by 1851 where she is the youngest daughter with siblings Patrick, Mary, Anne, Rose, Michael & John. By 1871 they were all known as HORAN.

The nearest I found was Margaret daughter of Curly HOURICAN & Ellen Tobin of Gorladoo 25th May 1846 in Durras RC records. I also found a Margaret d.o. John HOARIHAN & Norri HAURHAN 2nd January 1848 of Rossmore in the same parish record.

Does anyone know if Curly could be a nickname for John or Norrie for Ellen?

The saddest record I found was in Castlehaven & Myross where the priest has written in August 1847 'a dreadful year of famine', and in November 1847 'all are dying of starvation'. There were very few births that year. This put my own fruitless search in perspective.
The 1901 census in Mountrath Co Laois, Ireland shows John Horan (cousin, born in America) living with Martin and Annie (Lawlor)Costigan.

The census indicates Annie Lawlor was also born in America. There may be a connection with Annie Lawlor in the United States.

In 1845 in Mountrath, John Costigan married Mary Horan. This may be a connection to John Horan.
I am compiling a database of Horans and Egars in County Kerry, Ireland and Horans in Manchester, New Hampshire because I think that it is the only way I will be able to definitively find my ancestors. I would be very grateful for any documented information out there about either name particularly in relation to those places. I will be more than happy to share what I compile with any interested party (once it is done). The names that I am extremely interested in are Margaret Horan, William Horan, Patrick Horan, Jeremiah Horan, Timothy Horan, and Alice or Alicia Egar.

Thanks,

Leah Prescott

Clarence P. Grogan, Rome NY Police

I have a copy of a photograph and these newspaper articles, that were in my Great Grandmother's possession. Her name was Margaret Carrigan Sullivan Nevieus, ans her parents were James Carrigan and Susan Horan. Her first cousin was Clarence P. Grogan. I hope this info comes in handy for someone - I would love to hear from you as I have a bit more info about this side of the family.

Clarence P. Grogan

The Rome Police Station will not be the same without Sgt. Clarence P. Grogan, who died unexpectedly Monday at the age of 69. A member of the police force since 1921, he had been in charge of the desk – the communications, booking and complaint center – for more than 30 years.

This is a position from which one sees all aspects of life. Sgt. Grogan maintained his sense of humor, his appreciation of the outdoor life that he loved and his devotion to his assigned duties.

He was a good man who will be missed in our police department and community.

Sgt. Clarence P. Grogan January 14, 1888 – 1957.

On March 4th, 1957, The Rome Police Department, lost from its ranks, a devoted and beloved member.

The passing of Sergeant Clarence P. Grogan is indeed a great loss to the police department, and to the entire community. A devoted servant for thirty-six years, Sergeant Grogan had proven himself a valuable Police Officer and a Gentleman, and in the performance of his duty he was unswerven, honest, with a character above reproach.

Long known for his ardent love of the field and stream, Sergeant Grogan was popular among those in the sporting circles. As a police officer, he was loved and respected by those of us that had the honor of working with him.

The Philip S. McDonald Police Benevolent Association mourns the passing of this respected member, and extends its sympathies and condolences to those whom he has left behind.

Horan's of County Mayo

Trying to find info on a Catherine Horan who married Thomas Molloy. They had three daughters Catherine, Helen and Unknown. Then they had my grandfather John in 1908. According to his birth certificate the family were from Ballybane, Nr Ballindine, and the birth was registered in the District of Claremorris. The birth was registered by John's grandmother Catherine Horan from Lenamore. I understand that John was a "late in life" addition to the family. He and his sisters were orphaned by about 1919. The three daughters went off to America with local families whilst John remained in Mayo until he moved to London as a young adult.
Can anyone help?
Many thanks Jacqui

I am looking or information on John (Edward?) Horan who was married to Sara Donohue (sp?). They had 3 sons in the 1850's- Daniel, Andrew and Matthew. Sara ended up in Denver with her son Andrew after living in Parsons Kansas around 1884. The family spent some time in Indiana around 1860. Would love to know if John had a sibling! He apparently died in the Andersonville Prison but my rearch doesn't find a John that fits. I'm guessing that John was born around 1833 and was definitely from Ireland. Any insight would be great!

Mary

I have info from census and tombstone writing only. Stone of Hanora says husband (Patrick) died in Tipperary. I have not found any record in Irish passenger lists books. Hanora and children (listed above) appear at different censuses. So I assume they rode free to Can. not all together. Any leads appreciated.
McDonoughs were long time friends, perhaps in Tipperary, too.

Joseph Horan

I am searching for information on my great-grandfather, Joseph Horan. What little information I have is that he immigrated from Ireland in the mid to late 1800's, with two brothers, Patrick and Thomas. There may have been another brother, William, but of that I'm not sure. The story I have is that Joseph lost touch with his family when he married a non-Catholic. He had at least one son, Arthur, and I believe a daughter, Stella. Arthur was born in Nebraska.
