Hi!

Thanks again for the info! The one I am looking at is the William, born by Herman's second wife.

As for my 3rd gr grandfather James Husband, he can be found in the 1880, Afton, Union County, Iowa census. The problem in locating him is that all the indexes show the name as Harbana. That is just an incorrect transcription.

When you find that family, you will find James's wife Mary, plus his son Andrew and Andrew's wife Phebe. In that census, James shows his parents born in VA.

So I don't how this is going to come out. Someday, I'll get the records I need. I suspect they'll come out of Ohio.

Robert Schneider

I will do the best I can with the information I have regarding the 8 children of Herman (Harmon) Husband and their respective mothers.
Wife #1 ~ Elsie Mary Cox ~ Married 1733
Children ~ John b. 1749
Mary b. 1755

Wife #2 ~ Mary Pugh ~ Married 1762
Children ~ William 1762
Herman Jr. 1764

Wife #3 ~ Amy "Emey" Allen ~ Married 1765
Children ~ Emy 1769
David 1770
Isaac Tuscape 1771
Phoebe 1776

I believe you have all the marriages correct.
To try to hopefully clarify your James and Williams I will try to clarify it. James Husband b.1694 Cecil, MD d. 1767 married Alice Parr.
James had a brother William b.1697 who was married to Mary Kinkey..... these brothers had a father William b, 1650 who was married to Mary Bowen. Now the above brother William b. 1697 and Mary Kinkey had Herman (Harmon) Husband. I still don't know which James was on the 1880 census unless it was James Wiley Husband b.1871 and is one of the Husband's that I have been looking for...he is Harmon Jr's. grandson.

I'll second your attitude about these boards. I'm always hoping an old post might pay off.

I've heard of the Gary Nash book. I even saw him on C-Span, but haven't read the book. I believe he uses Herman as a representative anti-Federalist.

By the way, the Kars book had many interesting items. Not the least of which is that the Husbands in NC were in close contact with families whose names also show up in OH. Names such as Moffitt and Henderson aong others.

On to my suspicions. I have a suspicion that James Husband, born bef. 1775, had a father named William. The only reason I believe this is that the first son of James was named William. First son given the grandfather's first name.

Could it be another one of those children? It could have been John. Checking the early records of Ohio, I do find a John Husband. He was never in Muskingum to the best of my knowledge. I also can't get records establishing his age.

Something mitigating against John being in my direct line is that this Husband family has a habit of naming boys after ancestors. There is no John Husband in my line. We have 1st James, 2nd William-James-Andrew, 3rd Andrew James-Francis (named after a father in law), 4th Ida May-James Andrew.

Could James himself have been a son of Herman? I guess so, but I can't find any records establishing that he had a son named James. That's why I'm tempted to place a generation between James and Herman.

Thanks again! I hope this continues to be profitable.

Robert Schneider
Better late than never, what is great about these message boards is that we can come upon good information from previous years, and still reply and hopefully those involved will also reply.

I bought the previously mentioned book last summer (2007).

Do you know which children were his by which wife?

I have a copy of "The Allen Family, Descendants of John and Amy Cox Allen With Allied Lines" by Lester M. Allen. In it he quotes a couple of articles in the "Laurel Messenger," which is apparently a genealogical and historical magazine, about Herman (or Harmon) Husband. Mr. Allen lists these children as belonging to Herman & Amy Allen Husband:

1. David Husband, b 1770, d 1840, md Elizabeth Kimmel
2. Amy (or Emy) Husband (no dates) md Evans Bennett
3. Isaac Toscape Husband, b 4m-25-1771 in Hagerstown MD md Ann King
4. Phoebe Husband b 10m-23-1776 in Hagerstown MD md Peter Kimmel

According to the Allen book, 8 children are listed in his will. The author did not know who was the mother of these children.

Mary Husband
Herman Husband Jr
John Husband
William Husband

The author of the Allen book does not attempt to trace these children any further.

The James Husband in the 1880 census was born 18 Aug, 1808. This date is taken from a headstone. His birth was in Virginia, current day West Virginia. I do not know the exact location. He died 16 Aug, 1884, in Afton, Union County, Iowa.

Just for the record, his brother William was born 1803, in Virginia, current day West Virginia. He died in Washington, Licking County, OH on 19 Aug, 1886.

The father of these two brothers, James, was born before 1775, going by the Muskingum, OH 1820 census. On my family page, I have a definite death date, but this actually applies to a James Husband who was in Berkeley County, WVA. At one time, I thought he was in my line, but now I doubt it.

I will definitely search for the book.

Robert Schneider

Hi!

Thanks for your reply! I wasn't aware of the book you mention. I will be sure to get it and read it.

In the last year, I found my 4th gr grandfather Husband in Muskingum County, OH census of 1820. His name was James. So I now have documented James, James, Andrew James, and Ida May (my gr grandmother, mother of my grandfather Edgar Schneider).

The question for me is, was Herman the father of James or grandfather? Right now, I'm leaning toward grandfather. I also suspect that I descend from his second wife. My 3rd gr grandfather James Husband had a brother named William. In 1880, living in Licking County, OH, he listed his father as having been born in MD and mother born in NJ. In 1880, James living in Union County, IA, listed his father as born in VA and mother born in VA. I'm inclined to trust William's census entry because the records indicate that James was in poor health by this time.

I'm still looking in Muskingum and Licking Counties in OH looking for documents. I also have found the Husband name in other counties in OH and KY from very early in the 19th century. Military land bounties are also a possibility.

If I learn more, I will continue to post!

Robert Schneider

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/c/h/Robert-L-Sc...

Hi. Herman Husband is my 4th Great Grandfather and he has descendants who lived in Chester, Illinois...in fact my grandfather was born in Chester, Illinois and he would be Herman's 2nd great grandson. When I went to the Husband family reunion in 2006 I actually saw the house where my grandfather was born in and met lots of my Husband family. They are in Chester, Illinois not Chester, PA. Harman Husband died in Pennsylvania and he had a son named John but he was born in about 1749 in Alamance, Randolph Co., North Carolina but that is the extent of that John line as I have no more information on him ...Please let me know if I can be of any other help.
Molly Carson

Re: New Book on Whiskey Rebellion and Herman Husband

I just found this Herman Husband conversation and I wanted to let you know that Herman Husband is my 4th Great Grandfather. Yes, I am aware of the book "Breaking Loose Together ~ The Redulator Rebellion in Pre-Revolutionary North Carolina" by Marjoleine Kars which was very informative but I also enjoyed "The Wind in the Forest" by Inglis Fletcher. He was definitely quite the man with such a colorful background. Well, had to send this 'hello' and if I can be of assistance to you about something in his life, I will try to help, and yes Amy "Emey" Allen was Herman's 3rd wife married on Oct 15, 1765, Elsie "Mary" Cox was #1 married in 1745 and Mary Pugh was #2 married on July 17, 1762. Have a great day and sorry I just only now found this conversation.
Molly Carson

I have never thought of looking at the messages despite subscribing to Ancestry for many years. My 4 x and 3 x great grandfathers were both William Husband b Liverton in 1754 and 1788. Are they on the family tree you mention. If so I'd be delighted to see the tree. My email address is pauline.ebbs@ebbsassociates.com.

Regards

Pauline

improved Husband & Husbands family tree

So far I haven't been systematic in spelling of the surname, so y'all may have to search under both Husband and Husbands.
---------------------------
It's better to go directly to the above URL for website, or via worldconnect family trees portal at www.rootsweb.com
or search at http://wc.rootsweb.com
BY THOSE PORTALS, y'all can look at the source notes, or can look at more recent generations than are provided by the early global descendancy, for person on the family tree by just clicking on a name.
ALSO via those portals, the latest updates and corrections are incorporated into the family tree.
----------------------------------------
BUT, as a less preferred alternative, in case the above options aren't possible, here's what my descendancy currently says:
1.
