A private memorial service for Dale A. Kern, 92, of Granville, Ohio formerly of Berea, Ohio will be at the McPeek-Hoekstra Funeral Home, 133 S. Prospect St., Granville.
Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville with military honors provided by Licking County Veterans Alliance. Mr. Kern was most recently a resident at SharonBrooke in Newark, Ohio.

Mr. Kern, a retired principal of Middlebrook Elementary School in Berea, died Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at Licking Memorial Hospital in Newark, Ohio.

He was born in Slatington, PA on January 11, 1917 to the late Dr. H.B. (Harry) and Elizabeth (Hopkins) Kern.

During WWII, Dale served in the U.S. Navy. He was a 1941 graduate of Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and received his Masters Degree in Education from Cleveland Case-Western Reserve.
Mr. Kern was also a member of the American Legion Post 398 in Granville. Dale will always be remembered by his family as a loving, feeling father.

Surviving are his sons and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Kathryn Kern of Granville, Ohio; and Gregory Kern of Olmsted Falls, Ohio; daughter, Kristina Schra of Clearwater, Fla; stepchildren and their spouses, Kathie Heller of Pasadena, California, Terry and Laury Irwin of Marietta, Ohio; Patricia and Rudy Biehl of Marietta, Evelyn and Donald Bryant of Oberlin, Ohio; and Dana and Karen Irwin of Westerville, Ohio; and 15 grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Marcielle C. "Marcie" Kern who died September 28, 2000; and two brothers.

i found this in the history of outagamie county:

FRANK KERN, who owns and operates an excellent farm of 120 acres, located in Greenville township, is one of Outagamie county's successful agriculturists who have made their own way in the world, achieving success through the medium of their own efforts. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, May 5, 1856, Mr. Kern is a son of Andrew and Eva (Phillips) Kern, natives of Germany, where the father was born in 1818 and the mother one year later. They came to Milwaukee in 1843, Mr. Kern working in the city for some years and then locating on a small farm eight miles into the country, but after some years removed to Appleton and subsequently purchased forty acres of land in Center township, on which he resided until his death, in 1902. His wife had passed away there in 1889. They had a family of eleven children, of whom Frank was the ninth in order of birth, and of these seven are now living, as follows: Julia, wife of Charles Becker, a retired farmer of Black Creek; Theresa, the wife of Peter Schmidt, a farmer of Seymour township; Lena, the wife of Charles Karlofer, residing near Seymour; Agnes, the wife of John Stricker, proprietor of bottling works near Seymour; John, a farmer of Mackville, Center township; Andrew, residing at Hilbert a farmer; and Frank. Frank Kern received his education in the schools of Mackville, and until he was twenty-seven years of age he resided with his parents. He then went to Appleton, where for six years he was engaged in work for others, and at the end of that time purchased a farm in Grand Chute township northeast of Appleton, which was his home for thirteen years. Selling this property, Mr. Kern purchased his present farm of 120 acres, where he has since carried on general farming, and has occasionally followed the trade of mason, which he learned in his youth. He has been very successful in his operations, and is proud of the fact that his only assistant during the years of his hard labor has been. his wife. His property is well-cultivated, his buildings bear the appearance of being well looked after, and everything about the land points to the practical, thrifty agriculturist. Mr. Kern is a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Appleton, .and one of his most cherished and highly-prized possessions is a prayer book belonging formerly to his father, which has been in the family since the time of its purchase, in 1705. He is independent in politics, and has never aspired to public office, neither has he been a member of any fraternal association, his whole time and interest being taken up by his farming operations.

On November 17, 1885, Mr. Kern was married to Miss Anna Schmidte, who was born at Apple Creek, Grand Chute township, Outagamie county, Wisconsin, February 23, 1864, a daughter of Emrich and Elizabeth (Flick) Schmidte, the former born June 18, 1829, in Prussia, Germany, and the latter August 15, 1834, in Baden. Mrs. Schmidte came to the United States when sixteen years of age, and resided in Milwaukee until marriage. Mr. Schmidte was about twenty-four years of age when he came to the United States, and he worked in New York for a time, then coming to Milwaukee and securing work as a farm hand on the West property. Coming later to Outagamie county, he located on Apple Creek, where he cleared a property and later exchanged this for a farm near the town, but in his declining years gave up business activities and went to live with his daughter, Mrs. Kern, at whose home he died in 1899, his wife having passed away June 7, 1892. They had a family of seven children, of whom three survive: Katherine, the wife of Andrew Kern, a brother of Frank; Anna, wife of Frank Kern; and John M., residing in Appleton, where he is engaged in contracting. Mr. and Mrs. Kern had five children, namely: George, born December 18, 1886, is single and resides at home; Joseph E., born December 28, 1889, also resides at home and assists his father; Rosie Katherine, born January 11, 1892, married May 9, 1911, Ray Spreeman, a native of Cecil, Shawano county, and they are now living with Mr. and Mrs. Kern; Mary Elizabeth, born April 12, 1895, who died February 19, 1909; and. Henry, born October 22, 1900, who resides at home and is a. student in the public schools.

I have a Great Great Grandmother named Madgeline Kern, born march 31, 1860 in Milwaukee County and died July 4, 1947 in Seymour Wi (outagamie county) sounds like it is in that family. I have that she married Charles Kailhofer in 1860 and they stayed in seymour.

John Kern III, was the father of Edward Meyer Kern(the artist and topographer for whom Kern County and the Kern river in California are named. Edward was the youngest of John's nine children. Anna, one of Edward's sisters, was my husband's gggrandmother. John was the custom-house tax collector for the Port of Philadelphia.

My great grandfather was Frank Kern of Richmond Va and one of his sons was Grover Cleveland Kern (born 1884). Frank Kern was married to a Martha Melton. I don't know names of Grover Cleveland's siblings---only that they lived in Richmond.

Two brothers of my ggg grandfather, David Kern, moved to Luzerne County. They were George Kern and Henry Kern. George did not have any children But Henry had 5 sons & 2 daughters.
David Kern also had a brother Leonard who lived in Northampton Co., PA.
Have done quite a lot of research on the Kern family.

My Kern family came to America in 1754. The line that went to Iowa went around 1830's or earlier. They went to the Ottumwa and Keokuk area if I remember correctly. I have not read that history for some time so my dates may be off as far as Iowa is concerned.

Does anyone have an Emil KERN b. 1862 in Germany, in their database? He married a Nona Marie IMMEN, b. 1870 in Germany also. Various spellings on her last name.

I am decendant of Michael's second wife Barbara WEEDMAN RIFFLE KERN/KERNS. I have a little information about them when they were in Fayette County, PA. I also am looking for info on a Kern family. William Kern married Elizabeth Mickeal. They had 8 children while living in Indiana and then moved to Bremer Co., Iowa where the last 6 children were born. William died in Bremer Co., Iowa 2/14/1887 and Elizabeth died 12/22/1904 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their children were born from 1840 to 1866. you can contact me at petersone20@yahoo.com

I am possibly part of you family but in my listing of Nadrew Kern and Lena Grosser; i have Mr. Kern birth year listed as 1836 with him being married ti Lena Grosser as July 29, 1873 and passing away January 25, 1921.

Both being, I believe, in British Hallows Cemetery in Posotia. WI

I have Kerns in Potosi, WI.- 1870.
Andrew Kern, b. 1838, in Baden, Germany mar. twice, 1st to Elizabeth Stuckler, 2nd to Lena Grosser. Andrew and Lena were my gg grparents. Their children were: Louisa (my g grmother) Minnie, Benjamin, Andrew Jr., and Fred.
In Andrew Sr.'s obit, it says he was the last living of 9 siblings and he was the eldest. On the 1870 Potosi, Grant Co., WI, census, is listed George Adam Kern, 58, wife, Barbery, 51, Henry, 25, William 23, George 20, Christiana 18, James 14 and Frank 6 and also, Andrew Kern, 27, Elizabeth 19, and Elizabeth, 1. Andrew and Elizabeth also had Ludwig Kern, who was living in Kansas in 1921 when his father died. I believe my Andrew is another sibling of the George Adam Kern family. I have a John Kern who mar. Sybilla Kilby. Their son, Elvy Vernon Kern, died in 1953. I have a funeral card for Elvy Vernon Kern that was among the papers belonging to my gr grmother, Louisa Kern Edmonds. Elvy was a brother to Sadie Kern who married Henry Belscamper. I have quite a bit of info on these families, but haven't proven the relationship of my Andrew to George Adam Kern. If the photo you have is of the same John Kern whom married Sybilla Kilby, I have a cousin who may be able to identify him.

John W Kern line was from Jacob Kern b 7-4-1779 Frederick Co., VA youngest of 5 boys d 1843 Shelby Co., Indiana of Adam Kern. The other were Nicholas 1768, Adam Jr.1773, Henry 1775 d 1828 and twin Samuel 1775 d 1857 both d in Shenandoah Co., VA
