Descendants of Julius Portrum/Patrum and Eva
Lauk/Look

I. Julius Bertram/Portrum/Patrum was born between 1750 and 1760 probably in Germany and died between 1840 and 1850 probably in Rockingham County, Virginia. It is by no means proven that Julius Bertram was born in Germany, but Julius Bertram's son, Andrew Bertram, stated in the 1870 census that his father was of foreign birth and it is known that the Bertram/Portrums were of German descent. Some other researchers have spelled Julius Portrum’s name as Potram or Bertram. He married Eva/Eve Laub/Lauks/Lauk/Look/Lanckron on July 9, 1792 in Augusta County, Virginia. She was a daughter of George Lauks/Lauk/Laub. She was born between 1770 and 1780 probably in Virginia and died after 1840 probably in Rockingham County, Virginia. I found Julius Bertram and Eave Lauks' marriage record in Augusta County, Virginia dated for July 9, 1792, with their names spelled as follows: Julius Bertrum and Eave Lanckron. Augusta County, Virginia is next to Rockingham County, Virginia. Also, in Augusta County, Virginia, there is a marriage record for Adam Lauks to Mary Rowler on December 15, 1795. Adam Lauks was probably a brother to Eave Lauks/Lauk/Lanckron. From the biography of Julius's grandson, Noah Portrum, it is learned that the Portrums and Mongers were of German descent, so my guess is that the person that wrote out the marriage bond did not know how to spell Julius or Eve's names correctly. Julius Bertram/Portrum was listed in the 1801 Rockingham County, Virginia Personal Property Tax List as Julious Bertrum. Julius Bertram/Portrum was listed as Jul. Batran as taking Communion on October 3, 1819 by Joh. Petrus Schm[ucker?] in Ermentraut's Lutheran and Reformed Church in Rockingham County, Virginia. Julius Bertram/Portrum was listed as Julius Potram in the 1810 and 1820 census of Rockingham County, Virginia. In the 1810 Rockingham County, Virginia census, the Julius Potram family was recorded as follows: 2 males 0-10, 2 males 10-15, 1 male over 45, 2 females 0-10, 1 female 10-15, and one female 25-45. In the 1820 Rockingham County, Virginia census, the Julius Potram family was recorded as follows: 1 male 10-16, 1 male over 45, 2 females 0-10, 1 female 10-16, and 1 female over 45. In the 1830 Rockingham County, Virginia census, the Julius Portrum family was recorded as follows: Julius Bartrum as head of household with 2 males 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 70-80, 2 females 15-20, 1 female 20-30, and 1 female 50-60. In the 1840 Rockingham County, Virginia census, the Julius Portrum family was recorded as follows: Julius Bertram as head of household with 1 male 90-100, 1 female 20-30, and 1 female 60-70. From these censuses it is inferred that Julius Portrum had 9 children-4 boys and 5 girls. So far, 7 of the 9 kids have been identified. There was probably another son named Andrew Bertram, who was found living in Rockingham County, Virginia at the time the Julius Bertram family was living there. Andrew Bertram was born about 1807, so he was probably the son that was 10-16 in the Julius Bertram household in the 1820 census as there was no other son of Julius Bertram that would have been young enough to fit this description. So, there were probably 5 boys and 5 girls. Julius Portrum and Eve Lauk had the following children:

1. Mary Elizabeth Bertram/Portrum was born on June 14, 1794 in Augusta or Rockingham County, Virginia and died on December 21, 1874 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. She was baptized as Mary Elisabeth Bertram on February 11, 1796 in Ermentraut's Lutheran and Reformed Church in Rockingham County, Virginia. Mary Elizabeth Portrum married John Beal on October 27, 1811 in Augusta County, Virginia by Minister G.H. Riemenschneider. She was married as Elizabeth Botram. He was born on October 12, 1793 in Washington, Maryland and died on March 27, 1869 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. He was a son of John Beal and Eve or Elizabeth Eberhardt. In the 1830 Hawkins County, Tennessee census, the John Beal family was recorded as follows: John Beal as head of household with 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 30-40, 2 females 10-15, and 1 female 30-40. In the 1840 Hawkins County, Tennessee census, the John Beal family was recorded as follows: John Beal, junior as head of the household with 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 40-50, 1 female 15-20, and 1 female 40-50.

2. John Bertram/Portrum/Patrum was born on July 22, 1796 in Rockingham County, Virginia. He was baptized on August 21, 1796 in Ermentraut's Lutheran and Reformed Church in Rockingham County, Virginia. He married Polly Monger on January 18, 1818 in Rockingham County, Virginia. On the marriage license John Portrum's name was misspelled as John Bertram. Polly Monger was probably a sister to Susannah Monger, wife of Henry Portrum/Patrum. There is another marriage between a Sally Monger and a George Michael in Rockingham County, Virginia. Sally Monger is another probable sister of Susannah Monger. In the 1820 Rockingham County, Virginia census, the John Portrum/Bertram family was recorded as follows: 1 male 18-26, 1 female 0-10, and 1 female 16-25.

3. John Henry Bertram/Portrum/Patrum (called Henry) was born on February 13, 1798 in Rockingham County, Virginia and died after 1847. Henry Portrum was baptized as John Henry Bertram on April 8, 1798 in Ermentraut's Lutheran and Reformed Church in Rockingham County, Virginia. He and at least his brother Samuel Portrum and sister Mary (Portrum) Beal migrated to Hawkins County, Tennessee. Henry Potrum is found in the 1820 Rockingham County, Virginia census listed as Henry Potrum with his family. Henry Portrum is found in the 1830 Hawkins County, Tennessee census as Henry Patrum and living with his family and living very close to his brother Samuel Portrum. In the 1820 Rockingham County, Virginia census, the Henry Portrum family was recorded as follows: Henry Potram as head of the household with 1 male 16-26 and 1 female 16-26. In the 1830 Hawkins County, Tennessee census the Henry Portrum family was as follows: 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 0-5, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20, and 1 female 30-40. So, it appears that in 1830, Henry Portrum had 1 son and 3 daughters in his family, but it is not clear if the youngest daughter, Julia Ann Portrum, was born yet in 1830 to be included in this census. There is no date for when this census was taken. So, Henry Portrum had 1 son and 3-4 daughters. Henry Portrum is listed with 2 other individuals in his household in the 1847 Van Buren County, Iowa census. This census only recorded the heads of the household and the number of other individuals in the household. He married Susan/Susannah Munger/Manger on April 13, 1818 in Rockingham County, Virginia. Susannah Munger/Manger marriage license lists her father's name as Henry Manger/Monger. She is believed to be a daughter of Heinrich/Henry Manger and Anna Margaret Zellar, but this is very debatable. Susannah Monger was born in Rockingham County, Virginia between 1790 and 1800.

4. John George Bertram (probably called George) was born on October 28, 1799 in Rockingham County, Virginia. He was baptized as John George Bertram on November 10, 1799 in Ermentraut's Lutheran and Reformed Church in Rockingham County, Virginia. He probably died young as there is no other trace of him anywhere.

5. Samuel Bertram/Portrum was born on July, 1 1801 in Rockingham County, Virginia and died on August 13, 1874 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. He was baptized as Samuel Bertram on August 9, 1801 in Ermentraut's Lutheran and Reformed Church in Rockingham County, Virginia. Samuel Portrum married 1) Anna/Amy (?). Anna/Amy was born about 1801 in Virginia. Samuel Portrum married 2) Lucy Ann Long on November 5, 1866 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. Lucy Ann Long was born about 1819 in Virginia. In the 1830 Hawkins County, Tennessee census, the Samuel Portrum family was recorded as follows; Samuel Potram with 2 males 0-5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 0-5, 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 20-30. In the 1840 Hawkins County, Tennessee census, the Samuel Portrum family was recorded as follows: 3 males 0-5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 0-5, 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 30-40. In the 1850 Hawkins County, Tennessee census, the Samuel Portrum was recorded as follows: Samuel Potrum 49 born in Virginia with $550 of property a farmer, Amy Potrum 48 born in Virginia, Henry Potrum 16 born in Tennessee a farm laborer, George Potrum 14 born in Tennessee, Linda Potrum 12 born in Tennessee, Samuel Potrum 10 born in Tennessee, Thomas Potrum 8 born in Tennessee, and Nelson Potrum 6 born in Tennessee. In the 1860 Hawkins County, Tennessee census, the Samuel Portrum family was recorded as follows: Samuel Portram 58 born in Virginia with $3,088 of real estate and $1,900 of personal estate, Anna Portram 59 born in Virginia, George Portram 24 born in Tennessee a farm laborer. In the 1870 Hawkins County, Tennessee census, the Samuel Portrum family was recorded as follows: Samuel Portrum 69 born in Virginia with $750 real estate and $400 personal estate a farmer, Lucy Portrum 51 born in South Carolina, and Thomas W. Portrum 30 born in Tennessee. Samuel and Anna/Amy Portrum had the following children: 1) Henry Portrum was born about 1834 in Hawkins County, Tennessee, who served initially as a corporal and was discharged as a private in Company D of the 12th Battalion (Day's) Tennessee Cavalry in the Confederacy in the Civil War; 2) George W. Portrum was born about 1836 in Hawkins County, Tennessee and he married Elizabeth M. Miller on August 27, 1869 in Hawkins County, Tennessee; 3) Lucinda C. Portrum was born about 1838 in Hawkins County, Tennessee; 4) Samuel Portrum was born about 1839 in Hawkins County, Tennessee and married Mary Elizabeth Hord on May 19, 1869 in Hawkins County, Tennessee, and she was born on March 2, 1836 in Hawkins County, Tennessee and Samuel Portrum served initially as a sergeant and was discharged as a Lieutenant in the 60th Tennessee Mtd. Infantry in the Confederacy in the Civil War; 5) Thomas W. Portrum was born on November 15, 1837 in Hawkins County, Tennessee and died on September 25, 1892 in Hawkins County, Tennessee and he married Susan Isabella Kirkpatrick on June 18, 1872 in Hawkins County, Tennessee, whom was born on June 21, 1847 and died on January 10, 1909, and Thomas Portrum served in the Civil War for the Union Army in Company D of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry; and 6) Nelson Portrum was born about 1844 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. It is interesting to note that two brothers fought for the South and one fought for the North in the Civil War-this gives true meaning to the popular phrase “brother versus brother” in regards to the Civil War.

6. Dianah Bertram/Portrum/Potram was born in Rockingham County, Virginia and died in April of 1832. She married Michael Armentrout on September 25, 1828 in Rockingham County, Virginia. He was born on September 30, 1807 in Rockingham County, Virginia. Dianah Portrum and Michael Armentrout had a child, but both Dianah and the child died shortly after its birth. After Dianah's death, Michael Armentrout married Mary A. Dentamore. She was born on June 20, 1814 in Rockingham County, Virginia. Michael Armentrout moved to Butler County, Ohio in 1836 and then moved to Van Buren County, Iowa in 1840. Michael Armentrout has a biography that was published in a Van Buren County, Iowa history book. In the 1850 Van Buren County, Iowa census, the Michael Armentrout household was recorded as follows: Michael Armontrout 45 born in Virginia with property valued at $1,000 a farmer, Polly Armontrout 35 born in Virginia, Henry Armontrout 17 born in Virginia, George Armontrout 14 born in Virginia, Diana Armontrout 12 born in Virginia, David Armontrout 10 born in Virginia, Amanda Armontrout 8 born in Virginia, Lydia Armontrout 3 born in Tennessee, Thomas Armontrout 1/12 born in Tennessee, Ann Dugan 40 born Ireland, Harman Dugan 5 born in England, and Elizabeth Dugan 2 born in Iowa.

7. Betsy Bertram/Portrum/Potrum was born in Rockingham County, Virginia. She married James Roark. He was born about 1806 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. He was a son of John Roark and Peggy Blair.

8. Andrew Bertram was born about 1807 in Rockingham County, Virginia and died between 1870 and 1880 probably in Rockingham County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth (?) probably in Rockingham County, Virginia. She was born about 1806 in Virginia and died after 1870 probably in Rockingham County, Virginia. In the 1840 Rockingham County, Virginia census, the Andrew Bertram family was recorded as follows: 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 2 females 0-5, and 1 female 30-40. The Andrew Bertram family was recorded in the 1850 Rockingham County, Virginia census as follows: Andrew Bertram 42 born in Virginia with estate valued at $1,000 a farmer, Elizabeth Bertram 44 born in Virginia, Peachy Bertram 15 (a male) born in Virginia a laborer, Julia Bertram 13 born in Virginia, Lydia Bertram 11 born in Virginia, Amanda Bertram 9 born in Virginia, Samuel Bertram 7 born in Virginia, Rebecca Bertram 5 born in Virginia, and Henrietta Bertram 2 born in Virginia. In the 1860 Rockingham County, Virginia census, the Andrew Bertram family was recorded as follows: Andrew Bertram 53 born in Virginia with real estate valued at $1,680 and personal estate valued at $1,465 a farmer, Elizabeth Bertram 44 born in Virginia, Amanda Bertram 19 born in Virginia, Samuel Bertram 17 born in Virginia, Rebecca Bertram 14 born in Virginia, and Henrietta Bertram 12 born in Virginia. In the 1870 Rockingham County, Virginia census, the Andrew Bertram family was recorded as follows: Andrew Bertram 63 born in Virginia with father of foreign birth a farmer with real estate valued at $1,000 and personal estate valued at $175, Elizabeth Bertram 64 born in Virginia, Elizabeth Bertram 24 born in Saxony (?), and Henrietta Bertram 22 born in Virginia.

**There is a Johannes Bertman that was listed as a young confirmand on June 28, 1816 in Ermentraut's Lutheran and Reformed Church in Rockingham County, Virginia. Perhaps this is another son of Julius Bertram/Portrum or maybe this is Julius Bertram/Portrum's son John Bertram/Portrum.

II. John Henry Bertram/Portrum/Patrum (called Henry) was born on February 13, 1798 in Rockingham County, Virginia and died after 1847. Henry Portrum was baptized as John Henry Bertram on April 8, 1798 in Ermentraut's Lutheran and Reformed Chruch in Rockingham County, Virginia. He and his family and at least his brother Samuel Portrum and his sister Mary Portrum migrated to Hawkins County, Tennessee. In the 1820 Rockingham County, Virginia census, the Henry Portrum family was recorded as follows: Henry Potram as head of the household with 1 male 16-26 and 1 female 16-26. Henry Portrum is found in the 1830 Hawkins County, Tennessee census as Henry Patrum and living with his family and living very close to his brother Samuel Portrum. In the 1830 Hawkins County, Tennessee census the Henry Portrum family is as follows: 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 1 female 0-5, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20, and 1 female 30-40. So, it appears that in 1830, Henry Portrum had 1 son and 3 daughters in his family, but it is not clear if the youngest daughter, Julia Ann Portrum, was born yet in 1830 to be included in this census. There is no date for when this census was taken. So, Henry Portrum seems to have had 1 son and probably 4 daughters. In the 1840 Hawkins County, Tennessee census, the Henry Portrum family is recorded as follows: 1 male 10-15, male 40-50, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 15-20, and 1 female 40-50. Henry Portrum is listed with 2 other individuals in his household in the 1847 Van Buren County, Iowa census. This census only recorded the heads of the household and the number of other individuals in the household. Henry Portrum/Patrum married Susan/Susannah Munger/Manger on April 13, 1818 in Rockingham County, Virginia. Henry Portrum/Patrum and Susannah Munger/Manger had the following children:

1. Elizabeth Orlena (or vice versa) Portrum (she was called Orlena) was born either October 18, 19 or 20, 1819 (I have seen all three dates for her birth) in Rockingham County, Virginia and died on October 6, 1899 in Iowa. She married 1) John Flora about 1845 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. John Flora was born about 1820 in Tennessee, probably in Hawkins County, Tennessee. John Flora was a brother to Joseph Flora (husband of Rebecca Portrum) and a son of Daniel Flora, Jr. and Charlotte Pilant. The John Flora family was recorded in the 1850 Van Buren County, Iowa census in Linn Creek as follows: John Flora 30 born in Tennessee with estate valued at $400 a farmer, Orleanna Flora 30 born in Virginia, John Flora 5 born in Iowa, Jacob Flora 2 born in Iowa, and Charles Tipton 13 born in Ohio. Elizabeth Orlena Portrum married 2) William Davis about 1859 in Davis County, Iowa. He was born about 1810 in Mufflin, Pike County, Ohio and died on August 10, 1863 in Decatur County, Iowa. Her name might have been spelled Helena rather than Orlena. In the 1860 Decatur County, Iowa census, the William Davis family was recorded in Burrell as follows: William Davis 50 born in Ohio with $8,500 real estate and $1,300 personal estate a miller, Orleanne Davis 39 born in Virginia with $4,200 of real estate, James Davis 17 born in Iowa a farmer, Charlotte Davis 11 born in Iowa, Viola Davis 5 born in Iowa, Alice Davis 6/12 born in Iowa, John C. Flora 15 born in Iowa, Jacob Flora 12 born in Iowa, Nancy Flora 5 born in Iowa, and Christopher Crops 28 born in Ohio. By the time of the 1870 Decatur County, Iowa census in Burrell, William Davis was living with his 15 year old daughter Viola Davis and with the Thompson family. In the 1870 census, William Davis was not living with his wife Mrs. Rebecca (Portrum) Flora Portrum and was not living with her children from either of her marriages.

2. Rebecca Portrum was born on July 17, 1821 in Rockingham County, Virginia and died on July 17, 1893 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. She married Rev. Joseph Flora on March 6, 1841 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. He was born on May 22, 1816 in Hawkins County, Tennessee and he died on January 23, 1897 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. He was a son of Daniel Flora, Jr. and Charlotte Pilant. Joseph Flora and Rebecca Portrum are buried in Flora Cemetery in Hawkins County, Tennessee. Joseph was a Baptist minister. Also, Joseph Flora served as a minister and Captain of the 63rd Tennessee Infantry for the Confederacy. In the 1840 Hawkins County, Tennessee census, the Joseph Flora family was recorded as follows: 1 male 5-10, 2 males 10-15, 3 males 20-30, 1 male 40-50, 1 female 5-10, and 1 female 40-50. In the 1850 Hawkins County, Tennessee census, the Joseph Flora family was recorded as follows: Joseph Flora 34 born in Tennessee with $1,000 of property a farmer, Rebecca Flora 28 born in Tennessee, James Flora 9 born in Tennessee, William Flora 7 born in Tennessee, Noah Flora 5 born in Tennessee, and Woodson Flora 2 born in Tennessee. In the 1860 Hawkins County, Tennessee census, the Joseph Flora family was recorded as follows: Joseph Flora 44 born in Tennessee with $2,000 real estate and $1,000 personal estate a Baptist minister, Rebecca Flora 39 born in Tennessee, James H. Flora 18 born in Tennessee, William Flora 16 born in Tennessee, Noah Flora 14 born in Tennessee, Woodson Flora 12 born in Tennessee, Joseph Flora 11 born in Tennessee, Thomas Flora 6 born in Tennessee, and Mary J. Flora 2 born in Tennessee. In the 1870 Hawkins County, Tennessee census, the Joseph Flora family was recorded as follows: Joseph Flora 54 born in Tennessee with $3,000 real estate and $800 personal estate a farmer, Rebecca Flora 48 born in Virginia, Noah Flora 24 born in Tennessee and was working on the farm, Woodson Flora 21 born in Tennessee and was working on the farm, Joseph Flora 17 born in Tennessee and was working on the farm, Thomas Flora 15 born in Tennessee and was working on the farm, Mary Jane Flora 12 born in Tennessee, David Flora 5 born in Tennessee, and Jacob Flora 1 born in Tennessee. In the 1880 Hawkins County, Tennessee census, the Joseph Flora family was recorded as follows: Joseph Flora 64 born in Tennessee with father born in Pennsylvania and mother born in North Carolina (?) a minister, Rebecca Flora 58 born in Virginia with both parents born in Virginia, Thomas L. Flora 24 born in Tennessee with father born in Tennessee and mother born in Virginia and works on farm, Mary J. Flora 22 born in Tennessee with father born in Tennessee and mother born in Virginia, David B. Flora 15 born in Tennessee with father born in Tennessee and mother born in Virginia and works of farm, and Jacob C. Flora 11 born in Tennessee with father born in Tennessee and mother born in Virginia and works on farm.

3. Noah M. Portrum was born in 1825 in Hawkins County, Tennessee and died in Labette County, Kansas. He married Catherine Lasley on July 10, 1851 in Davis County, Iowa. She was born in Fairfield County, Ohio. She was a daughter of Peter Eugene Lasley and Catherine Heidlebaugh and a sister to Andrew Jackson Lasley (husband of Julia Ann Portrum). Noah Portrum was recorded in the 1852 Davis County, Iowa census with one other individual in his household. This census only recorded the heads of the household and the number of other individuals in the household. He was a grocer in Labette County, Kansas and a blacksmith for thirty-five years before that. In the 1850 Davis County, Iowa census, Noah Portrum was recorded in Salt Creek with his sister and her husband as follows: Andrew Laslie 22 born in Ohio a farmer and married within the year, Julian Laslie 19 born in Tennessee married within the year, and Noah Portrum 25 born in Tennessee a blacksmith. In the 1860 Van Buren County, Iowa census, the Noah Portrum family was recorded in Village as follows: Noah Portrum 34 born in Tennessee with $125 of real estate and $200 of personal estate a blacksmith, Catherine Portrum 28 born in Ohio, Clara M. Portrum 4 born in Iowa, Wm. E. Portrum 1 born in Iowa, Polly Lasley 21 born in Ohio, and John R. Turner 34 born in Ohio a cooper. Polly Lasley was a sister to Catherine Lasley and Andrew Jackson Lasley. In the 1880 Labette County, Kansas census, the Noah Portrum family was recorded in Parsons as follows: Noah M. Portrum 55 born in Tennessee with both parents born in Virginia a blacksmith, Catherine Portrum 47 born in Ohio with both parents born in Pennsylvania and was weaving as an occupation, William Portrum 21 born in Iowa with father born in Tennessee with mother born in Ohio a teamster, Sarah Portrum 18 born in Iowa with father born in Tennessee and mother born in Ohio works out (?), Elizabeth Portrum 16 born in Iowa with father born in Tennessee and mother born in Ohio, Frances Portrum 13 born in Iowa with father born in Tennessee and mother born in Ohio, Deborah Portrum 10 born in Kansas with father born in Tennessee and mother born in Ohio, Olive Portrum 8 born in Kansas with father born in Tennessee and mother born in Ohio, and Charles P. Portrum 3 born in Kansas with father born in Tennessee and mother born in Ohio.

4. Betsy Jane Portrum was born between 1826 and 1829 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. If Henry Portrum had four daughters, she is likely the other unaccounted for daughter. She married John Barnhart on March 21, 1847 in Van Buren County, Iowa. It is not proven that she is a daughter of Henry Portrum, but it seems very probable.

5. Julia Ann Portrum was born on November 21, 1830 in Hawkins County, Tennessee and died on November 24, 1914 in Lamoni, Decatur County, Iowa. She married Andrew Jackson Lasley on December 13, 1849 in Lick Creek Township, Van Buren County, Iowa. He was born on December 12, 1827 in Rush Creek Township, Fairfield County, Ohio and died on December 13, 1910 in Lamoni, Decatur County, Iowa. Andrew Lasley and Julia Portrum are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Lamoni, Decatur County, Iowa. Andrew Lasley was a member of the Reorganized Church of the Later Day Saints and his obituary says that so were four of his children. Andrew Lasley was a son of Peter Lasley and Catherine Heidlebaugh/Heidelbaugh.

**There is a Marietta Portrum, age 30, that was living with her son Minerva, age 1, in the household of Andrew E. Laslie/Lasley (an uncle to Andrew Jackson Lasley-husband of Julia Ann Portrum) with his family in the 1850 census of Davis County, Iowa. Then there is a Margaret Portrum that is recorded in the 1852 Davis County, Iowa census as a head of household with one other individual living with her. This census only recorded the heads of the household and the number of other individuals in the household. I believe that Marietta Portrum and Margaret Portrum is the same person and the person was misnamed. Marietta/Margaret Portrum must have married a Portrum man. Her husband was probably John Portrum that married a Margaret Miller, but how John Portrum fits into the family is not clear. These people are undoubtedly related to this family, but how is unknown.

III. Andrew Lasley was the son of Peter Lasley and Catherine Heidlebaugh/Heidelbaugh. Andrew J. Lasley came with his parents to Davis County, Iowa in 1841 from Ohio. In the 1850 Davis County, Iowa census, the Andrew Lasley family was recorded in Salt Creek as follows: Andrew Laslie 22 born in Ohio a farmer and married within the year, Julian Laslie 19 born in Tennessee married within the year, and Noah Portrum 25 born in Tennessee a blacksmith. In the 1860 Van Buren County, Iowa census, the Andrew J. Lasley was recorded in Village as follows: A.
