Classification: Query
Surnames: Laurence, Lawrence
I just now read your posting.
Information I have is that two sons of the Zion P. Lawrence family came to Texas from Mississippi right after the Civil War--Moses Perry Lawrence and Lemuel Eggar Lawrence, Sr., my g-grandfather. They settled in Central Texas where Moses was a merchant in Bartlett and Holland, and Lemuel was a farmer in Giddings and the Taylor/Thrall area.
The story I have about the spelling change is that there was a rift between the brothers, but I have no proof of that. Evidently spelling was not so important then, and in many records the and the "u" are used interchangeably.
My grandfather was Lemuel E. Laurence, Jr., and my father was Walton Hardee Laurence. I'd be glad to share what information I have on the Laurence line, and would be delighted to see what you have gathered.
