Laurence spelling -u/w?

Surnames: Laurence, Lawrence
I'm a Laurence from Tx. was told at a family reunion in the 80's that we started out spelling Laurence with a W instead of U can anyone tell if this true or not? If so what is the true story behind the W and U.
