connie, i'm a laurence from dallas, tx. if we are related, then a change was made from "w" to "u." i don't have the full story, but it seems somewhere between the migration between north carolina and tx, most likely in arkansas, the change was made. my ggg grandfather was daniel laurence in texas, but had spelled it with a "w" until he left arkansas. there must've been a falling out! please contact me if you have any further questions or anything to add

Hello,
I hope this gets to you since it has been quite a while since your query. I am interested in knowing more about your Orson Harrison Laurence. My 3rd great grandfather is Sylvester Matthew Lawrence b. 1799 in NC. Two of his sons were named Harrison and Hartwell, names found in your Laurence line. I have thought that Sylvester Matthew was related to your Orson Harrison Laurence and the Hartwell Laurence in Greene County GA. I also have thought there is some relationship between Sylvester Matthew and Joab Lawrence of Morgan County AL. I have just recently read that Joab Lawrence was born 1775 in Union County SC. At the time that was over the border from Rutherford County NC. I have been going thru the court records of Rutherford County and have recently found a Joab Lawrence in 1782. I am wondering if this could be a relative of Joab of Alabama and of Orson, Hartwell, and Sylvester.

Sylvester Matthew Lawrence lived and died in Attala County MS. I believe he was in GA (wife was born there) prior to MS.

Thank you,

Melody

I just now read your posting.

Information I have is that two sons of the Zion P. Lawrence family came to Texas from Mississippi right after the Civil War--Moses Perry Lawrence and Lemuel Eggar Lawrence, Sr., my g-grandfather. They settled in Central Texas where Moses was a merchant in Bartlett and Holland, and Lemuel was a farmer in Giddings and the Taylor/Thrall area.

The story I have about the spelling change is that there was a rift between the brothers, but I have no proof of that. Evidently spelling was not so important then, and in many records the and the "u" are used interchangeably.

My grandfather was Lemuel E. Laurence, Jr., and my father was Walton Hardee Laurence. I'd be glad to share what information I have on the Laurence line, and would be delighted to see what you have gathered.

Bunny Oliver

Hi this is Carol Laurence wife of Clay Laurence, your nephew. I have been trying to get information on your family tree. Do you have any information on his sister Samantha? When Buddy, Clay's father passed, Clay found a letter written to your mother, Thelma from a Samantha Laurence and we have yet to contact her. Any information that you can provide would be much appreciated.
Bunny,

Last evening the lady I told you about, the granddaughter of Fred Holmes Laurence called me again. During our conversation we discussed the parents of L.E.Laurence I, who I show are Moses and Sarah. She seems to think the male is Zion Laurence. Do you have any information about these people?

She had been to the Lawrence family cemetery outside Taylor Texas. She said it is worth a visit. Have you been there?

Let me know when you get a chance. You can E-mail me directly at S0705M@heb.com.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Phil

Boliver801
We are indeed cousins. If we ever met it was when we were very young. I remember uncle Walton but not his family. This is so strange. The other day I got a phone call from a woman I've never met. She said her great grandfather was Fred Holmes Laurence. He was a brother of Lemuel
Laurence II. She was doing some geanlogy study and my name came up. I have not thought about my family tree in some time. She started me thinking. I went to google and your message came up.
I'm not a great fan of internet security. If you would like to talk to me my work number is 325-690-5023. My work fax is 325-690-5015. Let me hear from you and we'll talk without being on the web.
Thank you for your reply.
Phil Laurence

Phillip--

You and I may be first cousins. My father was Walton H. Laurence and my mother was Gladys, and I'm wondering if your parents were L. E. and Thelma. If so, I am about six months younger than Buddy, and the woman who took care of the two of us when we were babies nicknamed me "Bunny" because of his nickname.

My parents divorced when I was two, and I had very little contact with the Laurences after that, although I do remember seeing Buddy a couple of times when I was a child on visits to Corpus Christi.

I have quite a bit of information on the Laurence Lemuel Eggar Laurence, Sr., family. If you are interested, I'd be happy to share it. I'd also welcome information you may have that I don't.

Bunny Laurence Oliver

U.S. Army Sgt. Harry J. Laurence of Cleveland, Ohio - Korean MIA Identified

IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 240-08
March 26, 2008
Soldier Missing in Action From The Korean War is Identified

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced today that the remains of a U.S. serviceman, missing in action from the Korean War, have been identified and will be returned to his family for burial with full military honors.

He is U.S. Army Sgt. Harry J. Laurence of Cleveland, Ohio. He will be buried April 9 in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C.

Representatives from the Army met with Laurence's next-of-kin to explain the recovery and identification process, and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the secretary of the Army.

Laurence was a member of L Company, 31st Infantry Regiment, then making up the 31st Regimental Combat Team (RCT), 7th Infantry Division. The team was engaged against the Chinese People's Volunteer Forces near the Chosin Reservoir, North Korea, from Nov. 27-Dec. 11, 1950. The unit was forced to retreat to the south due to intense enemy fire. Laurence was among many soldiers reported missing in action.

In 2001, joint U.S. and Democratic People's Republic of Korea teams, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), conducted two excavations of a mass grave near the Chosin Reservoir. The site correlates closely with defensive positions held by the 31st RCT at the time of the Chinese attacks. The teams recovered remains believed to be those of 11 U.S. servicemen. Analysis of the remains subsequently led to the identifications of three individuals, including Laurence.

Among other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC also used dental comparisons in Laurence's identification.

For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO Web site at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo or call (703) 699-1169.

http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=1...

Re: DNA testing at FamilyTreeDNA

You write that ". . .If you match results with another participant, you may be lucky to find that person has a paper trail further back than you have. . ."

I have found that recent family conections are unlikely, but distant ones may be more likely. For example, most persons directly related to my DNA seem to be more likely connected in the far distant past. That makes it difficult, and mostly impossible, to learn the point of connection. However, more distantly related persons, do occur in a general way. I have found this to be particularily true in cases of royal lineages (on both maternal and paternal sides) back to 200 AD. But, the connection is still more evident in the ethnicities of those persons, and it is not always recognizable by any particular surname. And, going 40000-80000 years into the past points of beginnings in west central Africa. In that case, learning of any particular name is impossible. But, it does point out the difficulties of find a specific connection through DNA to anyone. I guess the emphasis must be placed on the phrase, "may be lucky". That is still alright, since it is a facinating journey in any case.

Getting your DNA tested with FamilyTreeDNA will have your results compared to over 80,000 other project participant's results. If you match results with another participant, you may be lucky to find that person has a paper trail further back than you have. They may have had access to a family bible that no one else knew existed. Of course, I would suspect that if a DNA match occurs, it will happen with another person in your surname group, unless there has been an adoption along the way. Not everyone posts their tree on-line, but they may join a DNA project. There are others that have posted their trees with errors they are unaware of, then hooked up with another "relative" who posted their tree, then found out through DNA testing that they were not related, and that they had those errors in their tree. You may have an ancestor who came to the US from England, but he never reported from where in England. A fellow DNA project member you match might have an ancestor who did report from where in England that he came from.

This is a great way to possibly continue your tree when you have hit a brickwall in your paper trail, but exactly how?
