How do Leathers(southern germans) get to be Baptists??

I am researching John Wyatt Leathers, State Senator from Kenton Co Ky.

I am curious how germans from Schwaigern Germany got to be Baptists. Most of the Germans from the south were Catholic or Lutheran.
I speculate that the building where they worshipped still stands. I am working on that hunch.

I also want to find out how they got their 992 acre tract of land that became Fort Mitchell Ky. Was it payment for military service?
Thanks,
dik

Leathers Family Reunion Tugaloo Tribune 09-04-1917

The Tugaloo Tribune is a newspaper of Oconee Co., South Carolina. I am connected through William H. & Catherine Vissage Leathers(not mentioned in article). This is the article as written:

***Reunion Of The Leathers Family***

**Was Held At South Union Last Wednesday---Large Crowd And Good Time**

It Was Our Pleasure To Attend The Fourth Annual Reunion Of The Descendents Of The Late Asa Leathers At South Union Baptist Church Last Wednesday, August 29. These Annual Gatherings Are Always Looked Forward To With Happy Anticipation As It Brings Together Many Of The Connection Who Only See Each Other Once A Year. Wednesday The Weather Was Ideal And Nothing Occurred To Mar The Pleasure Of Any One.
Mr. W. M. Lemons, The Big Hearted President, Was On Hand And Invited All Into The Church At 11:30 For Religious Services, Of Which He Presided Over. Prayer Was Offered By The Rev. W. W. Leathers, Of Anderson, In Which He Fervently Returned Thanks To Almighty God For His Goodness During The Past Year.
A Number Of Old Time Songs, Such As “Trusting In Jesus”, “Happy Day”, And “Jesus Lover Of My Soul” Were Sung With The Spirit. Miss Amanda Reeder Presided At The Organ.
Minutes Of The Last Meeting Were Read By Mrs. Patt Isbel, The Secretary, And Reports On Births, Marriages, Deaths, Etc., Were Heard From The Various Committees. Mrs. Isbel Is A Daughter Of The Late Ezra Cromer And Granddaughter Of The Late Asa Leathers.
The Principle Feature Of The Morning Exercises Was An Address By Rev. W. W. Leathers. Mr. Leathers Chose For His Subject, “Education”, And He Was Listened To With Rapt Attention. He Considered This One Of The Most Neglected Things Of The Day. He Made It Very Clear That The Man Or Woman Without Education Was Handicapped And Found It So Much Harder To Combat The Problems Of Life. He Said The Boy Not Educated Was Shut Out Of The Better Things Of Life.
Mr. Gibson Dismissed The Morning Services With Prayer.
At One O’clock All Assembled Around The Long Tables In The Shade Of The Trees And After The Invocation By Rev. Leathers The Feast Of Good Things Were Enjoyed. Talk About War And Hard Times And Scarcity Of Food, But There Was No Evidence Of Such Things Among The Good Families Who Prepared The Dinner For The Leathers Reunion. The Ladies Had The Fried Chicken, Ham, Custards, Pies, Cakes, Preserves, Salads, Etc., Piled High And Close Together, Besides The Coffee, Grapes, And Other Articles Of Food. There Was Enough Taken Away For Supper. There Were So Many Clever Waiters, Too. It Was Impossible To Get Your Hand Empty Before Someone Was Around With A Tempting Dish.
After Dinner The Members Reassembled In The Church For A Brief Business Meeting At 2:30. Mrs. James H. Brown Was Organist And Rev. Leathers Lead A Number Of Songs, Which Were Greatly Enjoyed By All.
Mr. W. M. Lemmons Was Reelected President, Mr. John A. Leathers, Of Spartanburg, Vice President, And Mrs. Isbel, The Secretary. The Next Meeting Will Be Held The Last Wednesday In August, 1918. Mrs. Margaret Leathers, Mrs. Reedie Gibson, And Mrs. M. Gibson Were Elected Program Committee. Committees Were Named To Report On Obituaries, Marriages, And Births. Mr. Lemons Was Very Thoughtful In Suggesting A Committee To Report On Those Intending To Marry. Mr. Lemons Requested Cooperation On The Part Of Every Family. “God Be With You Till We Meet Again” Was The Closing Hymn And It Was Very Touchingly Rendered.
Out In The Grove All Were Invited Again And This Time It Was A Feast Of Some Of Those Great Big, Delicious Watson And Kleckly Sweet Watermelons. It Was One Time A Crowd Of Children Got All They Could Eat And They Were Much Enjoyed.
The Original Settler Of The Leathers Family Was Nimrod Leathers, Who Came From Virginia And Settled In South Carolina In The Seventeenth Century. His Body Was Buried On The John S. Dickson Farm Tugaloo River. He Had A Son Named Benjamin, Who Is Remembered By Many Of The Readers Of This Paper, As He Died Some Years Ago And His Body Buried In South Union Cemetery. The Wife Of Asa Leathers Was A Miss Isbel. Unto Them Eleven Sons And Daughters Were Born. Those Living Are Mrs. J. W. Mason, Of Westminster, Mrs. R. H. Sorrels, Of Oakway, And Mrs. Caroline Shirley, Of Habersham, GA, Rev. W. W. Leathers, Of Anderson, Mr. Thomas Leathers, Of Oconee. Four Sons, Andrew, Harrison, Robert, And David, And Two Daughters, Mrs. Andrew Bearden And Mrs. Ezra Cromer Are Dead. Of These Sons And Daughters, There Are Many Children, Grand And Great Grandchildren Living Of This And Adjoining Counties.

Published The Tugaloo Tribune 09-04-1917

19th Century Georgia Leathers family

Samuel Leathers, son of Johann Paulus Leatherer of Germany and Culpeper Co. VA and his wife Margaret Clore, was a Revolutionary War veteran. Samuel drew land in the "land lottery" while living in Hall Co. Georgia. He moved to live on his land in Carroll Co. Georgia where he died after 1832 when he drew again in the Gold Lottery. I am seeking to prove by will, deed, letter, etc. that my ancestor Joel Daniel Leathers, who married Mary McElreath in Hall Co. Georgia in 1824 and was living in the Republic of Texas when he died in Nov. 1849, was indeed his son.

Children of Daniel LEATHERS and wife, Magdalena "Molly" Kesler

I have found several websites which list Daniel as one of Frederick Leathers III sons and that he married Molly Kistler, had 5 children who were listed as minors in the papers of Frederick -- Mary, Susan, Barbara, Frederick, and Samuel. I believe "Molly Kistler" was Magdalena Kesler, daughter of Mathias and Eva Kesler who settled in Fairfield County, Ohio. What happened to this little family after Daniel's death about 1825? It sounds like Magdalena died in Allen County, Ohio (where her older brother, Peter, lived), buried in Hartshorn Cemetery. Still have not found anything about her 5 children with Daniel though. Any leads? Thanks!

Leathers and Shields family info I forgot

I am sorry I forgot to include that this marriage took place in Kentucky and under both names it said they were from "Glendora" The bottom simply says that they were married according to the Ordinance of God and the laws of the state of Kentucky at Lexington. Whether this means they were married in Lexington or in Glendora I am not sure. It also does not say What Baptist Church. Just R. K. Kelly and under that Pastor Baptist Church. The witnesses were:
Alfred Grimes and Katie Herring signed under the Pastor.

Thank You in Advance for any help.
Florence E Bessemer

Leathers and Shields Family Certificate of Marriage found

I recently found an old marriage certificate that is from 1909 and the couple were
Silas A Leathers and Annie E Shields They were married in a Baptist Church and it says under their names that both were from Glendora? The pastor was R K Kelly (Richard I think I found out) and there were also 2 witnesses who signed. It is very ornate and large ..probably 16 x 20 nice! It was behind an old picture I bought. I live in Fl and would like to give it to the ancestors if I were able to find them. I have done a little searching but know very little about researching these things. I did find something that makes me think that Silas Leathers died in 1914 and was part of the USC C 116 if this is any help. If anyone can help or have any info on either family? Please let me know so I may get this certificate to its rightful ancestors to frame. It is quite beautiful.

Thanks
Flo Bessemer
Port St Lucie, Fl
772 878 2704

I have seen my fathers family tree in my mothers family bible and the last name that was listed for my fathers side was a David H. Leathers. I searched out that name and found some information in the 1880 U.S. Federal Census. He was approximately 1 year old at the time of the census. The head of household was listed as Thomas H. Leathers. There was also a Mary Leathers age 28 Listed relation: Wife the head of household listed as Thomas H. Leathers. There were two more children listed with Thomas as head of household: William F. aprroximate age 5 and Sarah L. approximate age 8 . They are listed as living in District 8, Hickman County, Tennessee.
I did more research and found that Thomas' parents were Fielding D. and Louiza/ Louisa C. Leathers; and also that Fielding's parents were Greenbury Dixon and Nancy Leathers. Unfortunately that was all of the information that I was able to find. If anyone has any more information I would greatly appreciate your help.
Thanks.

Nancy Arbuckle, wife of Charles Leathers

Anyone else researching this problem? Charles Leathers m. Nancy Arbuckle, 18 Oct 1798 Franklin Co, KY. Permission was given by "Samuel Arbuckle, gardien." Samuel was married to Barsheba Peyton, but I'm beginning to think they weren't her parents, because after a visit to Anderson County, KY, last summer, I've think I've accounted for all of Samuel Barsheba's children. Maybe he was her uncle? Might her father have been Thomas Arbuckle? (Which would be handy, since I believe Thomas also married a Peyton...) Samuel Barsheba also gave permission to Vicey Arbuckle to marry John Buntain, 15 Jun 1803, and for Ann Arbuckle to marry William Lawrence (founder of Lawrenceburg, seat of Anderson Co.), 31 Jul 1810. I descend through Charles Nancy's son, Sanford Leathers (see my other post).

Mr. Leathers name was possibly Rolleigh (Ralligh, Rollo, R.H.M. or Ralleigh). R. LEATHERS was married to Margaret Rachael LIPPS 28 Nov 1952 in Carroll Co., AR. I am the ggdaughter of Lodusky P.
