Hello Phyllis
I am trying to find out more information on Samuel Levi the silversmith. There seems to be a South Wales connection. I am also aware that there was a Samuel M Levi Silversmith around at the same time. Do you know if these two are in fact the same person. He or they are associated with Birmingham silverware.

Regards Stuart

I wish I had info to share with you; I am primarily interested in Albert (AC) Levi and any of his children while you have info on his wife. Do you know if there were any children from their marriage? Yours, C.

Hello Joel,

thank you for writing a reply here. Now I know what you are talkking about here as this is exactly what my family did. They were Levi and were Jewish. This was my dad's mums family. She was Myrtle Ivel and we always knew the name was reversed but were never sure if she did it or if her dad or even his dad had made it that way. Myrtle was born in Brooklyn NY in about 1906 is all I know, to parents Henry(Henri) Ivel/Levi and her mum was Rose Nathan... we know that at the family)her mum or dads side) were Austrian Jews. The only ones I foind so far have been a Samuel Nathan b. Hungary 1830 and went to USA and his wife Rossa? b. 1832 in Austria... I can't verify them as Myrtle's grandparents but they may be. I know that Myrtle came to Australia in 1932 with we think her mother's brother and his wife, a relation of that closeness not sure which one though and can't find anything so far for emigration here. I have been hoping to find some relatives of hers most likely in the USA... but so far no good... but what you have said makes so much sense... maybe a few families did the same... if you are in the USA then maybe it is the same family... I would not know.

Thank you again Joel.

Adele

I finally got around to checking out your tree. Your Levias were in TX, NC, and MS when mine were in Ontario and Michigan. This doesn't mean there's no relation, but our most recent common ancestor is probably quite a bit further back (older) than that. Good luck searching.

Anything's possible. Transcription errors in Censuses and other public records are very common from one decade to the next. What kind of info do you have on the Leviases? My Levis are now in Michigan and Ontario. They got there by way of John Wesley Levi who was born around 1812 in Virgina. He emmigrated Guelph Ontario where he married Ann Guard from England. Would love to learn more about your folks. One of John and Ann's sons was Wesley who married Margaret Anderson (photo attached).

Jennifer, I think we may have a match. My John Wesley Levi was born in 1812 (I thought in Virginia) and he married Ann Guard from England born around 1815. They married and raised their family in Ontario. The differences could be chalked up the simple spelling or transcription errors. What kind of documentation have you been able to find? ronlevi@att.net

I have a copy of the will of Thomas T. Smith, who died in 1871 in Switzerland County, Indiana. In it he names his grandsons Thomas Levi and Henry Levi, as well as his daughter Nancy Pickett. Nancy originally married Henry Levi Sr. After he died, she remarried to Alfred Pickett and they had three children: John, Zachariah and Louisa.

I lost all my research for my Genealogy about a 2 years ago. I thought I had it backed up, but if I need the cd didn't work on my new computer. I had my Ged file on a different cd at least one that was only a couple months older than what the computer had on it. My husband passed in 2007 and I am just getting back to genealogy. So I really have no idea what I wanted. Unless it would of been to ask if you had information on Clarinda husband william Snyder and his family. I will keep you in mind if it comes to mind what I needed. It maybe a while because I have became addicted to this genealogy thing again so I am going to have to go cold turkey again.

Vicki

Unlike many other researchers of Isaac Levi, I do not presume that the Isaac Levi who entered into a marriage bond with Judith (Judah?) HILL is necessarily our ancestor. My research has indicated there were at least three separate males, of similar age, named Isaac Levi in and around Virginia during the late 1700's. None that I have corresponded with has yet provided any other evidence that clarifies which Isaac Levi married Judith/Judah HILL. We all know that Levi is a fairly common surname, and Isaac was a very common given name in those days.

Nonetheless, I entered their marriage information in my database, but noted it for further research.

I think you'll have good luck in your search on the Levi/Shaw connection, if you haven't already.

Do your Paynes include Chesley (about 1772 - about 1842), and Lucinda Payne who married John L. Nelson? If so we need to compare notes. I am just beginning to find info on Chesley Payne.
I think Rice Levi and his daughters Polly (Margaret) and Elizabeth from his VA marriage to Sarah Warren Davis came to Knox Boyds Creek Baptist Church community of south Knox County, TN, and northern Sevier County, TN. Rice was active in the leadership of the Boyds Creek Church as a representative in 1812, 14, 15, 16, 18, and 1819.

My ancestors from that area include the Newmans, Nelsons, Hackneys, Paynes, Johnsons, and Fingers. They can be found in the Boyds Creek Baptist and Seven Islands churchyards.

Other online postings link Rice as son to Abraham and Ann Leir Levi. With the name Abraham Levi, I would expect the family to be jewish, but Rice's role in the local Baptist church is well documented. That's all I've got. - Larry

My John Wesley Levi was born in Virginia in 1812. Haven't been able to identify his parents or siblings. He moved to Canada where he married Ann Guard (Geard)who was born in England. Their first child, Rachel Levi, was born in Ontario in 1836. John Wesley Levi was mulatto and could have been born either free or as a slave. The location and time of his birth suggests he was born into slavery, however, the fact that he has three names leads us to question that possibility. I'd be interested in any info you can share on any of Levi's in Virginia in the early 1800's regardless of thier race.

This is what I found since Dec of 2008:

Marriages in Knoxville, TN
Polly Levi and John Newman
Married September 9, 1819

Charles P. Hackney and Elizabeth Levi
Married May 18, 1819

Rice Levi and Priscilla Hackney
Married August 5, 1819

Are these people all related? Is Rice Levi Elizabeth's and Polly's father? Is Priscilla Hackney kin to Charles P. Hackney? They all live in the same area at the same time. Levi is such an odd name.

Charles and Elizabeth have a son named Rice Levi Hackney. Rice Levi lives near Charles and Elizabeth.

Look at the Census for Knox County, TN. Charles is there in 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1870. Rice Levi is in Knox Tn in 1830 living next door to Benjamin R. Hackney. Is Benjamin a father or brother to Charles P?

Something to think about

If you want to stay in contact or have any ideas, use my e-mail dav mar gilbert at bellsouth . net
Margaret

We need to talk. I am working back from Henry and Thomas. The connection between these families is very strong even today. Tomorrow I am visiting one of the oldest direct descendents of the Thomas line for some research and catching up. Well, actually my husband is also a direct descendent.

Rice Levi 1764, Elizabeth Levi Hackney around 1804, and Polly Levi Newman

Looking for info on Rice Levi b.May 18, 1764 VA, d.Feb 1847 TN. Apparently Rice Levi married in VA and then moved to TN without a wife.

Once in TN Levi married Priscilla Hackney Aug 5 1819 in Knoxville. Also in Knoxville, TN Polly Levi married John Newman Sept 9, 1819 and Elizabeth Levi married Charles P. Hackney May 18, 1819 in Knoxville, TN. Are Polly and Elizabeth Rice Levi's daughters that were born in VA and moved with him to Knoxville, TN? I can find no documents to support that.

Charles P. Hackney and Elizabeth Levi had a son named Rice Levi Hackney b. April 18, 1838, d. Aug 1, 1911 while in Knoxville, TN.

It's interesting that Rice Levi married a Priscilla Hackney and Elizabeth Levi married Charles P. Hackney and then named a son Rice Levi Hackney. Were Priscilla and Charles related? Were Rice and Elizabeth related?

Charles P. Hackney and Elizabeth Levi are my 3rd great grandparents, but I haven't been able to find out anything about either sets of parents.

Anyone have info or ideas? It's a mystery.

SAMUEL LEVI

Hello,

I am trying to find out about SAMUEL LEVI, my GGGGG'grandfather. He is reputed to have come from Frankfurt am Main, with his brother Moses c 1750. They settled in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Great Britain. Samuel married MARY BLEAR 08 Apr 1765 at St Mary's, Pembroke, Wales

Samuel was a silversmith in Haverfordwest. I have a problem however, in that there seems to be two SAMUEL LEVI in Haverfordwest at the same time, or was they one and the same.

One Samuel was a jeweller and Banker. It is very confusing and I wondered if there is anyone researching the name Kevi who might be able to help with this?

Thanks
Phyllis
in New Zealand

Can anyone please help with this query? On the 1871 census there are the household members, including a servant with the same surname as the head of family. Could this be a sister living in the household in return for household duties, etc. If this is the case, it seems rather a disrespectful title for a family member. personally, I think she must be the sister of the head of family.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated. I have searched for her separately and will continue to do so, but so far, she just crops up in the same family.
Gilly

Re: William Levi, the Hessian soldier

My website gives John Levi a birthdate of 1798 based on a familysearch record. However, in the Burying Grounds of Sharon Connecticut, a John Levi is listed who dies in 1841 at the age of 52 which would make his birth 1789 abt, before Abigail Tryon Lamb, John's alleged mother, could have married William Levi, his father, as Lamb died in 1792. It also lists an Eliza Levi, wife of John W. Levi, who died in 1850 at age 35. This is not the name of the wife of our John Levi. I think William Levi may have had children by a former wife that he brought to his marriage with Abigail. I think this because in census records there is a William A. Levi, b. abt 1780, and a William Levi that appears to be much younger. Both are closely associated with other Levi children we know more about. At this point there is much room for further discovery. I once hired a genealogist to find records of William Levi in Sharon, CT. I got one Revolutionary War record but that was all. It's on my website at dianneandpaul.net

Edward A. Schreiber, born 1858 ? in France, musician, Lived Meridian, MS, where he married Carolina KOHNER in 1881 (her second husband) & died 1898 (prob. in MS), buried Meridian Temple Beth Israel cemetery with infant children Louis, Gussie, ? Hugo. Son William Henry Schreiber (b. 1882, prob. Meridian, MS) became vaudevillian, married Caroline "Carrie" NETTER in Meridian, later raised my mother (a LATTANNER, Carrie's neice) during the 1920s-30s). Other son Frederick (b. 1885) was his partner, ended up in OK. Carrie NETTER had siblings Abe, Daniel Gerson, and Esther Lucile (my grandmother), all probably born in or near Mobile, AL 1881-1891 (Dan and Fanny were married there in 1880) but Daniel and Carrie, at least, later moved to Meridian, MS. Their parents were Gerson NETTER (probably b. 1850 Alsace Lorraine) and Fanny LEVI/LEVY (b. 1859 NY or France). Info on any of these families would be much appreciated, and I'm happy to share.
Henri Levi(Ivel) and Rose Nathan

Hi, I am looking for information on Henri(Henry) and his wife Rose Nathan(MN)... my Grandmother Myrtle Marie was born in Brooklyn(1906) and came to Australia with her uncle(a Judge Levi), she changed her name to Ivel, as well as her fathers surname(from Levi to Ivel)... no idea why. I think Henri and Rose would have been born about 1870-1885... they are supposed to have been of Austrian Jewish origins, not sure if it was their generation or the one before? The only Rose and Henri I can find have been on a census(1901?) in England under the name of Nathan(probably not them then)... not sure if there were other children, and I have checked the Ellis Island records but have found nothing on any of them... maybe they didn't want to be found back then, but it is proving extremely frustrating with such a brick wall now. If anyone has any info or ideas on this please let me know.

Adele
