The 1884 History of
Erie County lists a John
Lick as an early settler (about 1797).
My GG Grandmother was Nancy
Lick Greenfield. She is shown in the 1850 Census,
Washington Twp,
Erie Co., PA with the age of 59. She married
Sherman Greenfield and an 1830 Census shows
Sherman with a young family living in
Locke,
Cayuga Co., NY. As
Locke and
Summerhill are close together, I am wondering if there is a connection with George and Peter. George had a daughter, Nancy(she married a
Vosburg) so Nancy is a family name.
My husband's GGG Grandfather Wm D. Lawrence was married to Mariah
Lick. She is buried in the Lickville Cemetery. We have a newspaper clipping of a Lawrence reunion(1913) in which it notes that Orson
Lawence Jr. tells the history of William
Lick born 1737, died 1831. His father and mother were killed by Indians and he was taken captive. At age 14 he was exchanged. He ran away back to the Indians and was again exchanged two years later. This was about the time of King Geroge's war. He remembered seeing his mother's scalp hanging on a pole. When he was civilized he used to hunt the Indians like wild beasts.
Another person interested in the
Lick family recently sent me a picture of
Abigail Monroe Lick with family Calista, Teresa, Melissa, Velorus, Saphonia, Emmeline,
Clarendon, Nancy, and Paulina. If you are interested, I am sure between her and I, we could get a copy to you.
Any info you might have to help would be greatly appreciated.
