I am interested in the names of the children of Aaron Lick. I believe my ancestor Nancy Lick who married Augustus Ivan Burchfield may have been a daughter of Aaron Lick. My grandmother remembers her siblings as being named Charlie, Henry and Phrone (probably short for Sophronia). Grandma also remembers that the family was in some way connected with James Lick who started Lick observatory in California, although that may have just been a family legend"

Surnames: Researching surnames: BEACH, BUNT, CLEVELAND, DOANE, EDMONDS, EVE, GUYETTE, HARRIS, HARVEY, HEDGES, HUNSICKER, LICK, MISCHEAU, QUINN, TIPPETT, WOLFE
I have taken this info from the internet so cannot vouch for the accuracy: LICK, Aaron (b 1812) married Esther WHITE and had Alonzo (b 1832 in Edinboro, Erie, PA), Henry (b 1837), Sopron (b 1842), W C (b 1843). Aaron is the son of Peter LICK and Olive CLEVELAND. His sister Lucy Ann LICK HUNSIKER is my line. From the information I have, you answered my question of where in CA was James LICK supposed to be. From a copy of a local book from Cayuga, NY "Summer Hill" by Edith Howell Buckley: "(There is a tradition in the family that James LICK (1796-1876), born at Fredericksburg, PA, was a brother to George LICK. He manufactured pianos in Philadelphia, PA. Later he went to CA and accummulated a vast fortune. He left $5,000,000 to the University of CA for the erection of an observatory)." It would be wonderful if you have any other family lore to share.

Have you any information which connects George and Peter as brothers? Is it the same George who was James Lick's brother?
I think Aaron must have married twice. First to Esther White then to Lettie Darling. In the 1850 census he was married to Lettie but several of the children were too old to have been her children.
1850 census- Erie County Edinboro Aaron Lick, age 37, innkeeper, born NY; Letta, age 28, b. NY; Alonzo, age 18, b PA; Henry age 13 b. PA, Nancy age 10 born PA, Sophrona, age 8, b PA, S. C. female age 1 b PA, Lyman Vank age 26, b VT, occupation clerk, (boarder?)

I am trying to get some more info on James Lick's family. He was supposed to build a monument to his parents and grandparents and I am trying to get their names. I know nothing for sure but I have Peter and George Lick in Locke, Cayuga, NY on an 1820 US Census with John and William showing up, too. I think they are the brothers that were captured by Indians at Penn's Creek, PA. Peter has 2 males 10-16 which would be almost right for Aaron. In 1830 Aaron is listed as 20-30 with a female 20-30 and a female 0-5. In 1840 Peter and George are still there but no Aaron. The Lickville Cemetery in Summerhill, Cayuga, NY lists Peter Lick with Olive, his wife and Anna, his wife. A Moravia newspaper printed the following but I don't know the year: Summerhill in History: Being An Account of Some of the Early Settlers - As early as 1818, when to the naked eye only the blue sky and green forest were visible, George and Peter Lick came to the town from Schoharie county and possessed themselves of eighty acres of the solid, unbroken forest. They built and worked together for a time and later divided their interest...

I am intrigued by your mention of two Lick children being captured by Indians at Penn's Creek. Is there an internet source for that?
I wonder if there are any wills for Peter Lick or Aaron Lick?

I have not found any wills yet. I have not really been looking for anything on Aaron LICK, though. Here are some links on the Penn's Creek story mentioning the LICK's. I have not been able to determine if this is the NY LICK family. There is so much conflicting info that has been posted and I haven't been able to document anything, yet. 1. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~berta/ipg/nwbln.htm... 2.

I sure would appreciate an update if you find anything new.

Sharon -

A few years ago, I started researching the Burchfield family as part of my effort to research the McGill family. Nancy Burchfield, one of your ancestors, was a daughter of Patrick McGill of Saegertown. My wife is descended from Patrick's son William Perry McGill.

I had to put the research aside for a while although I will be getting back into it in the next few months. I can't remember if you were one of the people with whom I spoke (it would have been in the 2000 - 2002 or 2003 time period).

If I send to you what I have on your branch of the family would you mind taking a shot at updating/correcting some of my information. Also, how far back do you go in the information that you have?

Nancy M. (Lick) Burchfield lived in Saint Petersburg, Clarion Co., PA in 1880. She was born abt. 1840-41 according to the census. In 1850, she's listed as the daughter of Arron Lick, born abt. 1813 in NY, and lived in Edinboro, Erie Co., PA.

If they are related to James Jacobus Lick, they must fit in before James and possible after James' grandfather William. William whose will was probated in Montgomery Co., PA on 13 Apr 1819. He is said to have been 104 when he died, and that he served 5 years in the Continental Army and survived the encampment at Valley Forge 1777-1778.

Sources:
1. History of the Long family of Pennsylvania, William Gabriel Long, 1930, pp 154-164.
2. Will Book 5, Lick, WILLIAM died New Hanover, April 13, 1819. 5.133. Montgomery Co. Orphans' Court, RW File No: 4116, 6 pages.

I believe William had at last 3 sons and possibly a daughter: John of Lebanon Co., Jacob of Montgomery Co., William probably Montgomery Co. and Catharine.

Their descendants are known to have lived in Lebanon, Lancaster, Montgomery, Lehigh, Northampton and Berks Counties. There were at least 3 who relocated to California. I am a descendant of Jacob.
