I'm away from home for a couple of days. I have some information with me on this computer but not much. I have more at home. What I have is that Daniel Allen Monroe was born probably in CT. I believe that his father died in the Rev. War at Valley Forge. Clarissa Gates was born 11 April 1780 in Groton, New London, Ct. to John Gates and Sarah Meach. Daniel and Clarissa had Andrew, Abigail(Lick), Charles, Sally, Elizabeth (Nostrandt) and John. I'll get back to you in a couple of days with more information along with my sources. Clarissa married 2nd to a Jacob or James Thompson. I have the census info on them at home, too.

This is a year and a half after your query, now 10/26/09, I'm a g-g-g-grandson of Abigail Monroe Lick and am trying to trace her family. All I have is father Daniel Monroe, mother Clarissa Gates. I'd like to get the rest of the names of her siblings and where Dan'l and Clarissa originated. Info I have says Dan'l born in Preble in 1769. I doubt it. I feel he came from CT or Mass. but no evidence.
I have the picture you want, the original but can't email it.
Bill Maloney

Donald Edward Lick, Sr.born in Lawrence Park, Pa.,

Erie, county, pa,
Donald Edward Lick, Sr.
Donald Edward Lick, Sr., left this life on June 3, 2009, in Santa Ana, Calif., after a valiant fight with cancer. He was born in Lawrence Park, Pa., on February 14, 1927, and grew up in Erie, Pa., as one of six children. At the height of World War II, the day after graduating from high school, he fulfilled his duty to his country by enlisting in the Navy and spent the last year of the war fighting in the pacific theater. After returning home, he married the love of his life, Gwen Rhapps. Together they had three daughters and one son. After moving to California in 1963, the family added the daughter of their heart. While still in Erie, Mr. Lick was one of the first television announcers on WICU television. Although he supported his family as a systems engineer, music was his passion. Don served as the director of the Mount Calvary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. In California, he continued serving God through his music as the director of the choir at St. Barbara’s Catholic Church for the next 15 years. Don also appeared in many musical productions, including the Music Man and South Pacific. He was a dedicated member of many different Barbershop organizations having served as director of the Sweet Adelines Garden Grove Chapter and men’s Pasadena and Orange Chapters. During the latter part of his life, he entertained countless residents of local nursing homes and hospitals. He gave his children the gift of a home filled with music and taught them how to break into four part harmony at a moment’s notice. No birthday was ever complete without Papa’s own unique rendition of “Happy Birthday” on the piano. Don is survived by Gwen, his wife of 61 years, his daughter, Melody Johnson, of Fort Worth, Texas; daughter, Cristie Smith, (Harold); daughter, Lisa De Los Reyes, (Glenn); son, Donald Edward Lick, Jr., (Carol), daughter, Felicie Leech, of Santa Rosa, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be private with a celebration of life on a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers,

Published in the Erie Times-News on 6/7/2009,

Does anyone know who the "N.W. Lick" referred to in the following quote is?

----

The Sons of the American Revolution, California Chapter, participated in the ceremonies of unveiling the "James Lick Historical Bronze Statues" November 29, in honor of the memory of the Philanthropist whose gifts founded the great Lick telescope on Mt. Hamilton.

Mr. N.W. Lick was the grandson of William Lick--for five years a Continental soldier of the Pennsylvania Line. In commemoration of his father's war service, he erected near Fredericsburg, in his native State, a heroic monument, the main figure of which is a statue representing the private soldier of the American Revolution.

Source: The American Historical Register, Sept. 1894--Feb, 1895, Charles H.
Nancy M. (Lick) Burchfield lived in Saint Petersburg, Clarion Co., PA in 1880. She was born abt. 1840-41 according to the census. In 1850, she's listed as the daughter of Arron Lick, born abt. 1813 in NY, and lived in Edinboro, Erie Co., PA.

If they are related to James Jacobus Lick, they must fit in before James and possible after James' grandfather William. William whose will was probated in Montgomery Co., PA on 13 Apr 1819. He is said to have been 104 when he died, and that he served 5 years in the Continental Army and survived the encampment at Valley Forge 1777-1778.

Sources:
1. Orphans' Court, RW File No: 4116, 6 pages.

I believe William had at last 3 sons and possibly a daughter: John of Lebanon Co., Jacob of Montgomery Co., William probably Montgomery Co. and Catharine.

Their descendants are known to have lived in Lebanon, Lancaster, Montgomery, Lehigh, Northampton and Berks Counties. There were at least 3 who relocated to California. I am a descendant of Jacob.

Jack Lauman
I am hoping to visit Cayuga Co. this month and the cemetery where John and Abigail's mother is buried. She was Clarissa Gates Monroe and married for a second time to a Thompson.

In the meantime, all my LIcks started out in PA and moved to Summerhill, NY. Sylvester Carpenter, Charles' father, moved to Illinois. I don't have a date for that.
Re: George Lick's Grandson

I Would love a copy of the photo. I have a brick wall that I don't think I will ever get over or around. The only link I have to my Lick line is through my Great-Grandmother's brother. His name was either Edwin or Edward T. Lick, and is noted as both including E.T. Lick on four decades of the Federal Census. His birthplace is always listed as Illinois.

The first place I can locate him is Oklahoma in 1900 with his wife Ida May and Their first three children. His approximate birthdate is 1866-67 and for the next three decades he is in Electra, Witchita, Texas and is a Jeweler.

Edward/Edwin/E.T. is the Brother of my G-Grandmother Known as "Janey" LICK Cooper. We knew her given name as Sarah Jane Lick and she was a bonds child after the death of her parents. She was born February 22, 1870. I don't know what happened to Edward/Edwin after the death of their parents, but I cannot find either Sarah Jane or Edwin anywhere in their youth. I find "Janey" already married to Orval Cooper, listed as Auval Cooper on the 1900 Federal Census and they are in Oklahoma. This is the only place I can find her.

I have coincidentally found an Edwin and Sarah Lick living with a Hannah Lick in the 1870 census but they are approximately 13 and 15 years old and as many years older than my Edwin and Sarah. I had considered that they might have been the parents of my Sarah and Edwin but have decided they were not because Sarah shows up ten years later at the age of 25 as a widow with a daughter Cora, and Edwin has disappeared. Hannah is still alive ten years later and I find her with her older sons Nathaniel and Lewis in Boise, Idaho. Though they share some of the same family names as my Lick family, I do not believe they are the right people.

I am interested in any Illinois LICK connection because of the four decades of the census with my Edwin/Edward LICK where he consistantly states his birthplace is Illinois.

Thank You!
Diann Brooks

Sharon -

A few years ago, I started researching the Burchfield family as part of my effort to research the McGill family. Nancy Burchfield, one of your ancestors, was a daughter of Patrick McGill of Saegertown. My wife is descended from Patrick's son William Perry McGill.

I had to put the research aside for a while although I will be getting back into it in the next few months. I can't remember if you were one of the people with whom I spoke (it would have been in the 2000 - 2002 or 2003 time period).

If I send to you what I have on your branch of the family would you mind taking a shot at updating/correcting some of my information. Also, how far back do you go in the information that you have?

- Neal

Harvey's sister Viola was my grandmother. I have a reasonably complete family tree. Henry & Hannah had 10 children. Two of their sons, George & Percy, Percy's wife & son Teresa (D'Inverno), & Vincent, and Shirley Schwenk (Viola's daughter from her marriage to Harold Z. Schwenk) died in a house fire on January 5, 1949.

1930 Census Notes:
On April 9, 1930, Harvey was an inmate at the Montgomery Co.
Re: Licks in New York

The 1884 History of Erie County lists a John Lick as an early settler (about 1797).

My GG Grandmother was Nancy Lick Greenfield. She is shown in the 1850 Census, Washington Twp, Erie Co., PA with the age of 59. She married Sherman Greenfield and an 1830 Census shows Sherman with a young family living in Locke, Cayuga Co., NY. As Locke and Summerhill are close together, I am wondering if there is a connection with George and Peter. George had a daughter, Nancy(she married a Vosburg) so Nancy is a family name.

My husband's GGG Grandfather Wm D. Lawrence was married to Mariah Lick. She is buried in the Lickville Cemetery. We have a newspaper clipping of a Lawrence reunion(1913) in which it notes that Orson Lawence Jr. tells the history of William Lick born 1737, died 1831. His father and mother were killed by Indians and he was taken captive. At age 14 he was exchanged. He ran away back to the Indians and was again exchanged two years later. This was about the time of King Geroge's war. He remembered seeing his mother's scalp hanging on a pole. When he was civilized he used to hunt the Indians like wild beasts.

Another person interested in the Lick family recently sent me a picture of Abigail Monroe Lick with family Calista, Teresa, Melissa, Velorus, Saphonia, Emmeline, Clarendon, Nancy, and Paulina. If you are interested, I am sure between her and I, we could get a copy to you.

Any info you might have to help would be greatly appreciated.

Dianne

I am looking for Lick (Lueck) family members who came to America from Prussia in about 1860. My father was James Lick (not the California Lick) and my grandfather was Franz August Lick (originally spelled with a umlaut). There were supposedly 3 brothers who came from Prussia but I don't know much about them. I do know that my grandfather was supposedly born in Senne, Prussia in 1846 and married Susan Angeline McCarty in 1878 in Baxter County, Arkansas. They had 4 children - Henrietta Elizabeth (Bessie). Frederick Wilhelm, Carl August and James Ivey. They moved to Colorado in 1891. Any help would be appreciated.

Lick Family in MS/Indiana

I'm looking for info on the family of my grandfather, John Dower Lick. After 1870, the family was in Sunflower/Humphreys Co.,MS
Prior to 1870 the family appears on census records in the community of Rodney in Jefferson County, Mississippi. Some of the early names are Nicholas Lick (war of 1812 veteran)and Harham Lick. The family name sometimes appears as Leek. Also, I have an obituary published in the 1840's for a "Mrs. Nancy Lick", who lived at Rodney. This obituary states that Mrs. Lick had returned to Indiana, which is why I'm curious about the Indiana connection.

I have not found any wills yet. I have not really been looking for anything on Aaron LICK, though. Here are some links on the Penn's Creek story mentioning the LICK's. I have not been able to determine if this is the NY LICK family. There is so much conflicting info that has been posted and I haven't been able to document anything, yet. 1. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~berta/ipg/nwbln.htm... 2.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~berta/ombk/ch1.html 3. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/pa/union/history/lynn/l... 4.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~berta/pdf/omb1.pdf

I sure would appreciate an update if you find anything new.

I am intrigued by your mention of two Lick children being captured by Indians at Penn's Creek. Is there an internet source for that?
I wonder if there are any wills for Peter Lick or Aaron Lick?
I am trying to get some more info on James Lick's family. He was supposed to build a monument to his parents and grandparents and I am trying to get their names. I know nothing for sure but I have Peter and George Lick in Locke, Cayuga, NY on an 1820 US Census with John and William showing up, too. I think they are the brothers that were captured by Indians at Penn's Creek, PA. Peter has 2 males 10-16 which would be almost right for Aaron. In 1830 Aaron is listed as 20-30 with a female 20-30 and a female 0-5. In 1840 Peter and George are still there but no Aaron. The Lickville Cemetery in Summerhill, Cayuga, NY lists Peter Lick with Olive, his wife and Anna, his wife. A Moravia newspaper printed the following but I don't know the year: Summerhill in History: Being An Account of Some of the Early Settlers - As early as 1818, when to the naked eye only the blue sky and green forest were visible, George and Peter Lick came to the town from Schoharie county and possessed themselves of eighty acres of the solid, unbroken forest. They built and worked together for a time and later divided their interest...

Hello John - Nice to meet you!

Mary Jean Orne-Williams is 82 years old and her brother Kenneth is 80 years old. Mary Jean lives in Oregon with her husband Don and Kenneth lives in Arizona with his wife Betty. Don and Mary Jean Williams has 2 children and I don't know about Kenneth and Betty Orne. I talked to both Mary Jean and Kenneth in the summer of last year. I'll be writting Mary Jean this week and sent off some pictures to her and Don. Kenneth wasn't very interested in genealogy or pictures. I will be visiting Don and Mary Jean this coming June and hopefully visit Kenneth this year also. Do you have any pictures of your grandmother with her brothers (Florence, Harold and Stanley)?

Take Care, Roger

Hello John -

If you could scan in the picture of Florence, Harold and Stanley that would be great. I have a DSL line so the picture file can be big, maybe 600 DPI. I will scan in all of the pictures that Mary Jean has and share them with you if you want them. Dates on your information for the people that have passed away would be nice.

Thanks, Roger
