JOHN LORD and Abigail GRAY of Sullivan Co., NY

In the volume "History of Sullivan County" (New York State), by James Eldridge Quinlan, published in 1873, is the first sentence from page #531: "John and Samuel Lord came to Sullivan in May, 1803, from Weston, Fairfield county, Connecticut, and brought with them their families." From other sources I've read that John LORD's wife was Abigail GRAY, and her date of birth was 4 Oct 1762 and she died 26 Mar 1799. Does anyone know the parents of Abigail? My GRAY family also was from Weston, and I'm wondering if Abigail is my gggg aunt. Thanks for any help.
Jeff Gray

I am looking for information on Frederick LORD. He was born around 1893 in Vermont, his parents were from Massachusetts. I think he is buried in Rockwell Mills Cemetery in Dodgeville, Iowa Co., Wisconsin. I am told he has a military grave marker, but I do not have any military information. I've seen an index to the cemetery, but you have to order a CD to get all the pertinent information.

I do not know who his parents are or any of his siblings.

He married Ann HADLOCK and I know they have at least one daughter, Joann, who was born Jan 4, 1932.

I know that his wife Ann moved to Florida, I assume after he passed away. I visited her there once in 1980 with my grandmother, I was a teenager. It was near Orlando.

I'd like to find out if they had any more children as I need help in finding the missing pieces to Ann HADLOCK and her siblings.

Thanks,
Sandy

Anthony Lore/Lord or Vermont, born in Canada in 1806

For many years I fruitlessly chased information about this man. He died in Warren County, Pa. in the 1860s. His naturalization papers said that he was born in Canada in 1806. For a long time, we couldn't even place his marriage, but eventually we discovered that he married Rachel Hill in 1831 in Addison County, Vermont. In the marriage license, his name was misspelled Love, a very easy mistake to make. Based on the history of the area, and that he spoke French, we believe that he is descended from the Lord family found just over the border in Blairfindie, an area where French Acadian's settled in the mid/late 1700s, between the Vermont border and Montreal.

His middle name may have been Benjamin. His children were named 9not in birth order) Curtis Benjamin, William Henry, Maria, Tunis, A.D or Adin, Solomon Jehiel, Minerva, Franklin (Francois), Nathaniel, Mary, Marella.

If anyone has any information about Lore/Lord families in this area of Canada around the year 1800, I'd be very grateful for any assistance.

Roberta Estes
restes@comcast.net

As a hobby, I rescue old photos that have identification on them. This one isn't the usual rescue that I've done before.

The photo is of flower arrangements and a flag, over a casket, at the cemetery (that's what it looks like.) On the back is written: Edward Derning Lord, Born at deluth, Minnesota, April 22, 1894, Died at Barnum Minnesota, September 28, 1901.

I'd like to locate family to send this to. For details, contact me at: digginroots@yahoo.com

Lore/Lord Family DNA Surname Project

I'd like to invite the members of the Lord family to join the Lore/Lord family surname project.

Recent research has shown that many Lore families were initially Lord families, especially the Acadian families. The name appears to also have been L'Or as well, and sometimes La Montagna, although that may have been a military nickname.

For those who don't know how DNA testing is done, the male passes his y chromosome down to his sons, along with his surname, with no dna from the mother, allowing us to day to compare the yline dna of two males of similar surnames and determine if they share a common ancestor.

Please visit the project and join at www.familytreedna.com/public/lore

If you have questions, please ask.

Roberta Estes
restes@comcast.net

I'm trying to find more info on Joseph Lord (I'm guess born around 1825). He had at least one daughter Sarah Ann (born 1847 in Leicester, Leicesterhire). On her marriage certificate it states her father (Joseph) was a shoemaker but was deceased. The date of her marriage was Oct 15, 1868.

I did find a Sarah Ann Lord along with an Elizabeth Lord & Catharine Lord at an orphanage in St Margaret, Leicestershire in the 1861 census. This could possibly be her but I am not sure.

I do not know the name of Sarah's mother at this time. I am waiting to receive her birth certificate (hopefully it is the right one).

Lord's from Crawshawbooth, Lancashire, England HELP!

Has anyone come across a George Lord born about 1792 born in Crawshawbooth according to censuses. He married in Haslingden on Dec 15, 1815 to Alice Sutcliffe born about 1794 also Crawshawbooth.

Does anyone know of George's siblings or parents? I have him traced from 1841 census on, but not sure where/how to find info before this time period.

Common names passed thru generations are John, Henry, Samuel, James, William, Elizabeth, Mary, Alice, Annie. I find it a bit strange that a lot of these names have been used each generation, but not George???

They may have had a child named George that I am unaware of, or other children, since George & Alice married 1815, but the earliest birthdate of children from censuses would be abt 1822.

Any help with George and Alice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Elizabeth
James Lord dies from eating rat poisoned cracker

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 27 October 1904, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

RAT BISCUIT KILLED HIM

Frisco Agent at Poteau, I. T., Thought They Were Crackers

South McAlester: A telegram from Poteau announced the death of James Lord, the Frisco agent under peculiar circumstances. A consignment of crackers were received theree on freight and the corner of the bottom of the box was broken off, spilling some of the crackers on the floor. Mr. Lord ate one of the crackers and was thrown into a spasm. He died before physicians could arrive. An investigation showed that the crackers had been prepared as rat exterminators. The pasteboard box in which the crackers had been placed had been marked on the poison, but there was no mark on the individual crackers to distinguish them from the ordinary kind.

I think I may be related to your family. I am looking for Margaret Lord b. about 1786 some sources say Virginia, but I'm not so sure. Margaret married Stephen Spruill whose family was from the Abbeville, South Carolina area. Stephen and Margaret moved to Dekalb County, Georgia around the time of their marriage. There is only one Lord in Abbeville in the 1790 census, William Lord. I think this may be Margaret's father. In the 1800 census there are only two Lords in Abbeville, William and John. I think the John here is Margaret's brother.

There is a Thomas Lord b. about 1789 in South Carolina. His sister Mary Polly b. about 1806 is married to Simeon Spruill, a relative of Stephen Spruill's. I think Thomas is connected to your line.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I'm at a dead end here.

I'm also having a hard time with Stephen's mother Elizabeth Robertson/Robinson also from the Abbeville area. Any help would be wonderful.

Many thanks, Teresa Sanders

Looking for ancestry on William H. Lord, son of William Lord. WH was born about 1847 in Connecticut, though I don't know where. If I have the right one, he was living with his father William & family in Litchfield in 1850. He left Connecticut in the late 1860s and followed the Santa Fe Trail out to Kansas, where he settled. He can be found in Osage County in 1870, and in Dodge City in 1910. We found his picture in a book of Dodge City history, pictured with other survivors of the Santa Fe Trail at the time a marker was placed on it in Kansas in 1926. My father believes WH looks like his father and so we are off on the trail to find out if and how we're related. Anyone with any information, please contact me at lord@prtel.com. Thank you.

Alice Elston & James Lord

I just came across a marriage for Alice Elston and James Lord in 1857 Haslingden, St. James. in the Lancashire BMD. I am looking for anyone that may have some information on this marriage/family.

According to family stories, one Lord brother died in Fall River and remains were sent back to England for burial. I just located a death record for James Lord whom died in Fall River, MA at age 70, married. James' residence and burial are listed as England. His mother is listed as Alice Ellstone, but I believe this may have been his wife rather than mother. Father is George Lord and mother would be Alice Sutcliffe. Possibly for some reason relatives decided to give his wife's name rather than mother on death record - both were Alice. I did have an Alice as James' wife prior through censuses, but did not have a last name.

My 3rd great grandfather, John Lord, did have a brother James born abt 1830 which would fit age wise. This is the only death record fitting brother's names listing England as residence and place of burial. So I am thinking he may have passed on while visiting family in US. Since male death records do not list spouses names, may be why someone chose to list wife's name as mother.

Trying to find out if I am headed in the right direction or just on a wild goose chase here. Any help appreciated.

Thank you,
Elizabeth
Lord family Bible Yorkshire, England

Hi, Can anyone help,

I'm trying to trace the Lord family bible which was lost to the family about 3 to 4 decades ago. When my Grandfather Percy Lord died in 1967, my Grandmother Lily Lord, I believe gave the family bible to a member of the Lord family, who was a distant relation living in Gawthorpe, West Yorkshire, England. I'm researching my family history and would appreciate it if anyone has any inforation on it's whereabouts as it may contain the names of relatives I'm not yet aware of. It may have John and Letitia Lord in, to start with.

Many thanks
David M Oldroyd.

I am tracing my Mother's ancestors. Her father was one of a very large family, his name was Edward Lord and was born in Settle yorkshire in 1878. His Father's name was Thomas Lord born c 1837 and married Mary Jane Hartley who was born c 1839 in either Settle or Preston Lancashire. Both places of birth are recorded in two different census years.
I cannot find any record of Thomas' birth or marriage at the moment and cannot get enough information to apply for either certificate. If anyone else is researching this family i would love to hear from them.

William Lord- from Crawshawbooth, Lancashire which one?

Have traced my 3rd g grandfather, John Lord, born 1822 in Crawshawbooth, Lancashire back thru all census to 1841 England, where he was living with parents George and Alice (Sutcliffe). One of his brothers is listed as William Lord, born abt 1837 and I have found 2 William Lord's born in Crawshawbooth that could fit.

I am trying to determine which one would be the correct William, or maybe neither. The 1861 census for John Lord lists occ as cotton manufacturer and there is a William and Louis on the census living next door with occ listed as Joiner & Builder.

1871 Higher Booth-Crawshawbooth
William 34 Cotton Spinner
Fanny I 27 wife

1881
William Lord 44 Spinner Manufacturer
Fanny I 34
Richard 9
William 8
Mary Campbell 20 Servant

1891 Lower Booths Rawtenstall Rossendale
William 54 Commericial Traveler
Fanny J 47
Richard D 19
Sarah F E 9

1901 Rawtenstall (Formerly Higher Booths)
William 64
Fanny J 57
William 28
Sarah F E 19

The other possible William follows:

1861 Higher Booth Crawshawbooth
William 23 Joiner & Builder
Louisa 21
This is the census that shows living next door to John Lord

1871 Higher Booth Crawshawbooth
William 33 Joiner
Louisa 31
Martha 9
Emily 4
Hannah 2
(This census, living next door to a James and Selina Lord. James could fit for another brother)

1881 Heap Heywood
William 43 Joiner
L:ouisa 41
Martha A 19
Emily 14
Hannah 12
Betsy 6

1891 Heap Heywood
William 53 Confectioner
Louisa 51
Emily 24
Hannah 22
Betsy 16

1901 Christchurch-listed under Catholic Chapel
William Lord 63 (Can't make out occ)
Louisa 61
Betsy 26

I don't know which of these William would be the brother of my 3rd g grandfather, if either.

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information on these families so I can either eliminate or confirm if correct family.

Elizabeth

William LORD of Slimbridge, England

I am researching the family William LORD of Slimbridge, England. William was christened 19 Jun 1808 in Slimbridge. William was the son of James LORD and Susannah DANGERFIELD of Slimbridge. William was a Butcher as was his father. William first married Elizabeth DAVIES, 26 Dec 1837 in the Parish Church of St Michael in Gloucester. Elizabeth was the widow of Joseph DAVIS of Slimbridge, who died in 1835.

William and Elizabeth had the following children;

William, born about 1841

In the 1841 census of Aston, Warwickshire, England, William is living there with Elizabeth and her children from her marriage to Joseph DAVIS. Also, their son William was 3 months old at the time of the census.

The children of Elizabeth from her first marriage are as follows;

Henry, born about 1817
Daniel Hale, christened 29 Feb 1820
George, christened 21 Jan 1823
Joseph, christened 4 Jan 1824
Catherine Ann Hale, christened 31 Jul 1825
Elizabeth Mary, christened 15 Jul 1827
Caroline Hannah, christened 22 Apr 1830
Louisa Ann, christened 4 Feb 1832
Edith Ann, christened 9 Mar 1834

In the 1851 census, William and Elizabeth are back in Slimbridge. In the 1861 census, Elizabeth has passed away and William has remarried. William married Martha NEWMAN about 1858.

William and Martha had the following children;

George, born about 1860

I would like to hear from anyone researching these families.

James Davis
