Meaghers in Nova Scotia, Canada

Looking for descendants and connected family of Margaret Meagher, ca 1790+, who married Hugh Greene, Halifax/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada area. A beautiful story there recites the loss of two little girls (Margaret's nieces) and is known still as the "Babes in the Wood" legend. Would anyone be familiar with this family? Or know of Meagher connections in that area?

John Walton Maher - Idaho

A John W. Maher is found on the 1920 census in Salmon, Lemhi County, Idaho, and on the 1930 census in Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai County, Idaho.

I'm trying to determine if this John W. Maher was the father of Robert Walton Maher (1926-1977), who in the early 1950s married Beatrice Demello (b. 1928, Massachusetts). Bea's parents immigrated from the Azores, Portugal. Her siblings were Manuel, Arthur, and Mary.

Robert Walton Maher was a Navy man -- born 4 Jun 1926, died 3 Jan 1977 -- and worked some time at the Pentagon. He and Beatrice lived in California before divorcing in about 1959. He and his 2nd wife (Alice Schomburg, 1932-1982) lived in Fall's Church, Virginia. They are buried in St. Mary's Catholic Church cemetery in Fairfax County, Virginia.

Looks like the above-named John W. Maher was married at least twice. The first wife I found was Julia A. (born about 1893), father from Ireland, mother from Wisconsin. His next wife was Dora (born about 1903).

John's birth was c. 1891 in Ohio. If he is the father of Robert Walton Maher, I would like to find the names of John W.'s parents and siblings, as well as the maiden names of his wives and their parents' names.

In the family I'm researching, tradition tells of a grandfather Fischer (perhaps Dora's father) in Idaho who had diabetes. It's said he acted as a guide (in the mountains?) for some men who left him for dead. He apparently wasn't dead when the men abandoned him, as he crawled a couple miles from where he was left before dying. The story goes that there was a plaque erected in commemoration of the event.

Any info on ANY of these people would be much appreciated.
Bridget Maher born about 1836

Hi, my name is Kerry Hobden and I live in Queensland, Australia. I'm searching for any info on my Great Grandmother, Bridget Mary Maher. The only info I have is as follows:

Born: 1836, County Cork, Ireland
Died: 1935, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
Wife of: Frederick John Boustead
Mother of : Frederick Thomas, John Michael, William Richard

On the Electrol Roll 1913 & 1922, Bridget was stated as occupation, Home duties in Barcaldine, Qld.

The following is from Bridget's great grandson, Trevor John Crawford:

"Bridget Mary Maher, was born in County Cork, Ireland in 1863? to a fairly well off family. Her husband was Frederick Boustead and Englishman and he was a Blacksmith.

The family did not agree with her having anything to do with an Englishman so unbeknown to them she runs away to Australia to marry Frederick Boustead. Years later her family tried to find her to give her her inheritance by placeing adds in all newspapers but her Irish pride stopped her from contacting them.

My mother could not remember much about Bridget Maher, as mum was only very young when she lived with her family. Mum did remember Bridget liked telling stories about The Banshees which used to frighten her.

Frederick died of pheumonia after going out looking for cattle at night in the cold and rain during the floods. Bridget lived for some time with Trevor's grandparents then went to live with son Frederick and his wife Bessy (my grandparents, Frederick Thomas & Ethel May (nee Austin) Boustead), when she became ill she was sent down to Nazareth House at Wynnum North in Brisbane, where she died in approx. 1935 aged 75".

This is all I have and was hoping to get more info on her parents etc. It would be wonderful if someone can help me with this. Please contact me on:

hobo13157@bigpond.com

Thanks for taking the time to read this message.

Robert J. Maher, 80,
Robert J. Maher
Bethel Park

Robert J. Maher, 80, died at home in Bethel Park Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, from complications due to congestive heart failure. He is survived by his wife, Harriet J. (Griswold) Maher; his daughter, Jane and her husband, Robert Cobbett, and their sons, Nathan and Samuel, of Bethel Park; his son, John and his wife, Marty, and their son, Jason, and daughter, Christine, and two great-grandchildren, Ben and Jacob, of Essex Junction, Vt.; and his son, Timothy and his wife, Susanne Althoff, of Somerville, Mass. He also leaves a brother, James and his wife, Lucy, and their daughter, Cathy, of Los Angeles. Robert grew up in Utica, N.Y. Seeing how hard his father labored as a mechanic and a machinist, and his mother as a homemaker on the farm, working a plow horse and canning produce,
he was determined to improve himself through education. He joined the Army in 1946 and served in the occupation forces in Japan. After the Army he attended Union College, where he met his wife, Harriet. They had a wonderful marriage for 55 years. After earning his BA in economics at Union, he got a job with Alcoa. He worked for Alcoa in Buffalo, N.Y., Springfield, Mass., and Boston before settling in Pittsburgh in 1958. In the 1970s, he earned his MBA at the University of Pittsburgh. In the early 1980s, he left Alcoa and worked for a management search company and later served as CEO of a software company. But what he loved to do most was help people. He was an active volunteer with Carnegie Mellon University, where he mentored students who served as technology consultants for nonprofits. He was a member of the Executive Service Corps of Western PA and acted as a board trustee for the Bethel Park Public Library. He also served as a mentor to his children and grandchildren, dispensing career guidance and life lessons with devotion and optimism. Wanting to raise his children in an open-minded atmosphere, he was one of the founding members, in 1965, of Sunnyhill, Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills. The church would be an important part of his life and a source of many close friendships for the rest of his years. Robert embraced new technologies, sometimes to the surprise of younger people. He was an avid computer and e-mail user, and preferred looking to the future over dwelling on the past. When he did tell stories about growing up in the Depression or life in the Army, his stories always had a moral: that tough times were always relative, or that you should never judge others based on religion or race. The memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008 at Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills. Arrangements entrusted to the LEO J. HENNEY FUNERAL HOME, Carnegie. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills, 1240 Washington Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15228, or to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Attn.: Fundraising, 1 North Linden St., Duquesne, PA 15110.

Unitarian Universalist Church ."
Jane Maher married Patrick Higgins and had a son Michael Higgins 19 March 1851 in Ireland. Michael was baptised in Liverpool 3 April 1851. Therefore Jane and Patrick left Ireland between these two dates. I do not know where to start looking for the marriage certificate in Ireland. Does anyone recognise Jane Maher aged approx 20 years in 1851, born approx 1831 in their family tree.?

I am descended from a THOMAS FRANCIS MAHER. My Thomas was married to JOHANNA DORAN. They are
my GGGrandparents. I have been searching for imformation on them for several years to no avail. Their son PATRICK was my Great Grandfather. I am told Patrick had one brother called John who migrated to Tasmania or New Zealand. When Patrick migrated to Australia he lost touch with his brother John. My Patrick Maher came from Kilkenny, Ireland. That's all I know about his Irish connection. There are no Henry's in our Maher line that I know of but we have Patrick, Francis, Thomas and George. If anyone has a connection to my Mahers I would love to hear from them. Email me anytime. Regards, Leonie.
A Maher cousin from California was in touch and has sparked my interest....

According to the book, Marty, his father and four of his brothers came over the the US. In 1873, 4 other brothers and two sisters died of Dihtheria. His mother died in 1888 in Ireland. Joseph came over to the US in 1894/95, Marty in 1896. His father, Martin Sr, came to the US in 1904 and died in 1912. Brothers Thomas, Dennis, and William also came over in 1903/04 and all but Thomas enlisted into the US Army Thomas was a policeman in the cadet barracks.. I've been able to find obits on all except Thomas being I haven't figure when he died. Also, he is not buried in the WP Cemetery.

If any family members can help me with my project, please email me...

Tks in advance..
Sheila

Cornelius Maher was married to Catherine (Kate) Hansbury in Lawrence, MA on January 13, 1891; he was 27 years of age. His birthplace is listed as Ireland, and his parents' names are Thomas Maher and Bridget (unknown maiden name). The above information is from the city clerk's office in Lawrence, MA (marriage records).
After the birth of two sons, Richard born in 1892 and Thomas born in 1893, Cornelius left the family. His name appears in the Lowell Polk directory until 1894 but, beyond that time, I have not been able to find him.
I am hoping to find his birthplace in Ireland, date of birth, date of death, location of burial, and possibly another marriage.
I have checked the census records in Massachusetts from 1880 to 1940, and death records in Massachusetts with no success.

Richard Maher, Clonmell, Tipperary (married Anastasia Quinn)

I am loking for info on my great grandfather Richard Maher. I do not know if he had any siblings or his parents' names, but do do know that he lived in Clonmell, Tipperary, Ireland, married Anastasia Quinn, was Catholic and had ten children. Childrens names (not in order): Baby (died when young), John (?) (died when young), Francis, Judy, Peggy, Cecelia (my grandmother, only child now alive), Patrick, Nancy, Claire (sp?), Dixie. These are the names i have been given by my grandmother but a few of them may have different birth names as they often chose other names for each other (Peggy i think in particular).
Richard Maher worked in the Guiness brewery in Tipperary and Anastasia took in other people's washing. If anyone has any information on Richard's ancestry, i would love to hear from them. Email Francesca@thinkbig.co.uk

I am doing some family research and trying to discover more about my background. If anyone has any information to lead me to the next step or is seeking general info feel free to contact me. So far all i have been able to work out is that my great grandparents names were Patrick Joseph Maher (b. 1886 Taree, d. 1951 Casino) and Ethel May Sheehan (b. 1986 Lismore, d. 1959 Casino). The parents of Patrick Joseph Maher were Daniel J Maher (b.?, d.?) and Hannah M Simms (b.?, d.?) who married in Tamworth in 1887. That's as much as I have at the moment! my email is angemaher@optusnet.com.au

Regards
While at the library copying obits for someone, I managed to get a copy of the following obit. MAHER

Patrick William Maher, one of Centralville's well-known figures and a much respected resident of 68 West Third street, died Sunday at the Chelmsford street hospital after a brief illness. Born in Danvers when it was known as Tapleville, the son of the lat Patrick B. and Janes (Garrity) Maher, the family removed to Lowell where Mr. Maher and made his residence for more than 65 years. He came to Centralville before the inception of St. Michael's church. As long as his health permitted teh deceased had been a communicant of St. Michael's parish. For many years he was employed at the Lowell Machine shop. Surviving him are two sisters, the Misses Mary A. Maher and Alice R. Maher, with whom he made his home, and several cousins, all of this city. The body was removed to the McKenna funeral home, 757 Bridge street at Eleventh where friends may call after 1 o'clock today.

I am having some troubles tracing the name Mahair, but I keep coming across the Mahar name. All of the Mahairs I find go back to one man, Robert Mahair, b. Abt. 1815 in Georgia and migrated to Coffee County, Alabama. Does anyone have the name Mahair anywhere in their Mahar line? I am wondering if his name wasn't misspelled at some point, then remained Mahair for his children. Any help at all will be appreciated.

Maher in Louisiana

I have been looking for a connection from Ireland to Louisiana for a family whose children used the name Meaher, but seems to have been called Maher in 1870. The parents are Patrick and Honora, and the daughters are Catherine and Margaret. Patrick appears in the 1860 census as Pat Maher, and is hospitalized in Charity Hospital. Catherine, with name Katty Maher, marries Thomas Burns on 20 Apr 1874. Margaret A. Meaher marries James B. Keenan on 17 Jan 1881. Honora Meaher is shown in the 1890 City Directory as Patrick’s widow living at 113 ½ Bolivar. There is a Death Index entry for Honora Meaher, being born about 1831, and dying on 24 Jun 1897.
Does that fit in with anyone else’s material? Keenan’s, Meaher’s and Burns’ share a mausoleum in Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans. I am doing research for Vernon J. Gregson, Jr. in New Orleans whose mother was a Maryfrances Burns.
Thanks for anything you can do for me. Do you think that my Patrick Maher in New Orleans is connected to your research?
Joan F. Schaefer

My name is Garyowen Patrick Mahar Jr. I am a college student at Oregon State University. I have been trying to search my family history. I know very little at this point. My father is Garyowen P. Mahar Sr., his was Clayton E. Mahar. My great great grandfather was a doctor during the American Civil War. I know we came from Roscre in County Tipperary. Thats about all I know, except for a copy of our coat of arms I found in a little shop in Canada. If you can tell me anything about my (or our) family, or if you could tell me a few good places to look, I would be extremely greatful. I was enspired too search when I was on an airplane a few years ago. I was in the army then, and the elderly woman sitting next to me recognized my name from my nametag. She didn't remember where from, except that it was when she was in Ireland. A few weeks later, the same thing happened with a Sgt. at Ft. Lee in Virjinia.

My e-mail address is garyowen@juno.com.

Thank you.
Garyowen Mahar

My family grew up in Casino/Coraki in New South Wales, Australia. My Fathers name is Allan James Maher, my grandfathers name was Michael Joseph Maher. I believe that my great grandparents names were Patrick Joseph Maher (b.
Any information on the Maher family around this area would be great. Thanks in advance...
I am looking for relatives of Julia Maher (my great great grandmother) who I believe was born in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary in 1832. She married John Drake in 1849 in Waterford Cathedral, Co. Waterford. She died in the London area in 1899. Her father was John Maher, a carpenter, but I have no details of her mother or any siblings. I do know that at the christening of her own daughter - another Julia - a Catherine Maher attended but I am not sure whether this was a sister or her mother perhaps? Anyone who has similar details in the family ancestry, please contact me: bambergini53@aol.com. Thanks

I have found a reference to Joseph Maher, living in Ballinakill (Ballynikil) in 1850 (which was in the parish of Rathdowney, which later became either Roscrea or Urlingford). I believe he may be related to Matthew Maher, who lived in Naugatuck, CT (ca. 1815-1891) and to Patrick Maher (ca. 1810-15 - 1885), same town in CT, same cemetary. Matthew's gravestone sites the Irish county.
Other nearby parishes in Ireland at that time could include Aghaboe (between Dublin and Roscrea, contains Burros-in-Ossary), Borris (also called Maryborough or Portlaoise). There are other possibilities too.
Patrick arrived in the U.S. before 1850, but there would likely be family still there then, siblings and their descendants.
Names that occur in future generations between the two men (possible brothers) include James, Josephine, John, Mary, Margaret, Annie, Eliza, Edward, others...
There is also a connection to surname Martin, possibly Patrick's sister's husband, (or his wife's sister's husband - nee Butler) and several children from that family.
Does this sound like a possible match to someone?
-Janet

Dear Mr. Wilson: Like so many others that visit your teffific page on the Maher clan, I am trying to trace my great-grandparents in Ireland. If you could post this on your page I would greatly appreciate it, as it may connect to someone else's search. Thank you for your help.

John C. Maher, born November 18, 1838/died Nov. 18. 1904, and
Catherine Butler Maher, born March 15, 1854/died Sept. 3, 1905. They are buried in Platte Center, Nebraska USA, where John and Catherine began farming in 1871. Family lore indicates that they were both born in Roscrea, Co. Tipperary and married in the United States in 1869-1871, in Lowell, Mass, USA. We cannot confirm a specific marriage date. As best we can tell, John and Catherine had 7 children: Francis
Thomas Maher, born May 20, 1876 (died Nov. 22, 1887), Thomas M. Maher (my grandfather) born August 8, 1888, John Maher, James Maher, William Maher, Daniel Maher and Agnes Maher, all born in the United States. Thanks for any help.
