I am looking for any information on Frederick Mangles, who was a merchant and shipowner with an office on New Broad Street, London around 1840. Can anyone help.

My great grandfather was butler to a Frederick Mangles who in the 1861 census was 67 years old and described as a merchant of the City of London and living at Pendell Court, Bletchingley, Surrey. Any help?

I think it is the same guy. Do you have any more information on him? I can recommend the book "James Stirling: Admiral and Founding Governor of Western Australia" by Pamela Statham-Drew, which has much information about the Mangles family. My interest is that Mangles owned a ship named the "Success" that I have been researching for some time. You can learn more about my research at www.shipsuccess.com

Kind regards,
Richard

Hi Richard,

At present I have a little info on Mangles, he/his brother was in partnership with John Fulham Turner, one of the Turner family that I am researching. Magnus Johnson who was Master of the convict ship Guildford, married the daughter of John Fulham Turner. I shall as soon as possible, be searching for Frederick Mangles and his associated family wills. I have come across your website on Success by googling. I shall try to get to the London Metropolitan Archives sometime this year to look at Mangles & Turners business in Wapping.

Regards,

Ann Sadler

Hi Richard,

Is there anything in aprticular that you wish to know about Frederick Mangles and family?
Some of the family were in the Guildford area ( one of the sjips owned by the Mangles family was the Guildford) and I shall try to get a trip to Woking to Surrey History Centre in fairly soon, in March I should think. It is possible that there is some information there.

Regards,

Ann

Ann,
Thank you so much. Things that I would be looking for would be anything with respect to Frederick, but in particular:
-Any writings/correspondence from the period 1842-4, especially any reference to the 'Success';
-Any info respecting his business operations in Western Australia;
-Anything that would provide a clue as to who the figurehead on the 'Success' represents. (This was added to the ship with Mangles purchased it in 1842.)
-Info on the existence of a portrait of Frederick or his wife. (See previous item - it may be possible to compare her portrait to pictures of the figurehead to see if it is her.)

Otherwise, any new info on Frederick would be useful. Good luck with all your efforts.

Kind regards,
Richard
