Hi Denis - Just received your emails. Can I come back to you re your queries in a few days. I am in the process of putting together some family history for my second cousin and am desperately trying to retain information between one census and another. Is it a senior moment or a blonde moment?? Or maybe just a two brain cell overload!!

Loraine

P/S Had just an idea because of Warmington ....

If I'm not mistaken there was a big army camp in warmington.

William married pretty late, the first time in 1841, didn't he? Well, couldn't it have been that he was a soldier stationed in Warmington, before he married? In this case he would have come out of the county, which was stationed there at that time.

Do you know if any historical army records would be able to give any hints about it?

All the best, Denis Fluen

Re: Muckley

Hi Loraine,

a second late reply and unfortunately also without any new informations. I'm sorry.

I'm an offspring of William Muckley's and Margaret Larrat's son, Francis (1756 - 1840), who married Elizabeth Fryer (1756 - 1837). Their son, Francis Muckling (1798 - 1848) married Lavina Lark (1805-1884). Both were my great-great-grandparents. Both had a son, John Mucklin (1844 - 1922), who married Elizabeth Walker (1848-1884). My great-grandfather was also known as John Markley in his later life. My gran, Mary (1881-1951), was born as Mucklin, but married my grandad, David Walker, as Markley in 1899. This was in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire.

For me it's very hard to get new informations as I'm living in Germany in the meantime. That's why I were very pleased to find your message on the board. New to me was the marriage date of William Muckley and Margaret Larrat, besides his estimated birtyear. Thanks a lot for these informations.

Was also mentioned, how old Margaret was, when she married? I don't know if it's helpful, but I've out of an other source that Margaret Larrat shall have been Of Warmington. Her father's first name shall have been Arthur. That's all I have. Do you have any more informations for me? I would really appreciate it.

Regards from Germany, Denis Fluen

Markley Family - Stillwell, Illinois

Could anyone help me locate information about my grandmother's family who lived near Stillwell, Illinois in the late 1800's? My grandmother was Lavina (Lovina) Evangeline Markley, b. 12/20/1877 near Stillwell, Illinois, d. July 1929 in Cass City, Michigan. She married my grandfather Luke Ernest Wright on 12/22/1907.

My grandmother had a brother, John Markley living in Bainville, Montana and a sister, Mrs. R. A. Hutchinson from Sutter, Illinois at the time she died in 1929. There were two other brothers and two other sisters who preceded my grandmother in death. This information came from my grandmother's obituary. Unfortunately, I know little else about her except a photograph of my grandmother as a young woman.

I am new to genealogy, so if there is anything you would like to suggest to help me get started, I would appreciate your advice about searching for information as well.

My e-mail address is (jeffery_wright@sbcglobal.net)

Thank you,
Jeffery Wright

I have found both Williams marrages and his death records but I can not find any record of his birth. I have Stilton parish record cd 1604 to 1970 and his birth is not on it, so I have also come to an end with him.
My tree line come from his son Richard 1752 - 1831 who married Elizabeth Haddon. Their daughter Margaret had a son Thomas with an unknown soldier, and it was he who changed to Markley.
Its been good to hear from another "Muckley"
Stephen Markley.

Thank you ever so much for replying to my query. William is my 5th gr. grandfather. His gr. grandson became a Markley (Henry Markley born 1831, Peterborough). I was amused when visiting Huntingdon and opening the register to see Muckley - I guessed that this was what the Markleys were. I have searched all over for the ancestors of William Muckley to no avail. He married twice, first to Alice Holding. If you have any information on his forebears I would be delighted to know. If you are interested I do have some info on the Muckleys in Stilton although I would have to dig it out.Looking forward to hearing from you. Loraine Bessant

It is my further understanding she has subsequently died, but I cannot confirm that, but the only place I know of to get one now is one of the online booksellers who specializes in old genealogy and/or out of print books, or see what turns up on a Google search.

I hope this helps you.

David
Markley Board Admin

Obviously, this is far past the reunion date, but I wanted to say that I am still searching for my half-brothers and sisters. I was adopted at birth, and the hospital records showed only that my birth mother's name was Markley. I was born April 1, 1953 in Oil City Pennsylvania. I was adopted by Fred and Esther Paoletto. If you have any information for me, Paul, please send me an email at lennyp_2001@yahoo.com.

I was contacted through email some time ago, but I had computer trouble and lost the person's email address. If anyone has any information it would be much appreciated as we really are not sure if my grandfather was born a Markley or a Johnson. Story is that he was adopted or lived with a family and when it was time for him to go to school they gave him the Markley name??

When Joseph Markley (Barney's son) died in Missouri in 1906, his wife Nancy had to go through the court system to obtain custady of her own children in order to be able to sale her and Joseph's farm.I guess he left it to the children only and not her, I don't have a copy of the will. I do have copies of what she had when he died and the court papers she had to get to be able to sale her land.

Rebecca Markley lived just west of New Frankfort in the 1860's. I would guess that she bought the land with money from Barney Markley, since her husband didn't have much money. Did you get the emails I sent about this property purchase? I sent them by regular email as I don't think you can send photos to this forum.
Karen

I see what you mean. She could have been a daughter-in -law too. That may also explain why the children were with Elizabeth instead of Rebbeca. I have wondered where Rebecca Markley was after Andrew died. I did see the difference in the age between the 1850 and 1860 census. I don't have any photo of Barney markley. He was my grandma's paternal grandfather. I would like to see the picture of Robert Markley.I have been working with the granson of my great grandfather, Joseph Markley's brother. I will ask him if he knows of any photo of Barney Markley.I do have a photo of Rebecca Wheat-Markley-Larimore, Barney's wife though.

The 1850 census does not give relationships - Andrew Markley is listed as head of household, but it does not tell us that any of the children are his children, grandchildren, nieces, or nephews. In fact it does not even say Rebecca is his wife, although we know from other information that she is. All we know about Elizabeth Markley in this census is that she lives in Andrew's household, says she is 24 years old, was born in Ohio and could not read or write. In fact 10 years later in 1860 she says she is 28 years old - so we don't know exactly which age to believe. The only family information my great grandmother handed down was that her father Robert Markley had 3 siblings - Mary Jane, Enous (also sometimes shown as Amos), and "Lou" or Margaret Lou. Robert's death certificate gives his father's name as Robert Markley and mother's name "unknown". His obituary just says his parents died young. So I have always believed that Mary Jane in the 1850 census was Elizabeth's daughter. I have never found any other records of Joseph or William F. in Scott county. I have wondered if they were Catherine Markley's children as she is 27 years old and we don't know if she is their daughter or daughter in law. She also isn't in the 1860 census or in any of the cemetery records that I have searched. This is why I am asking if there is any family record mentioning the relationships. Andrew and Rebecca Markley had to have many grandchildren no matter how many of those listed in 1850 were their children or grandchildren. Someone along the way may have that tidbit of information to tie the family together. Do you have any pictures of your ancestor Barney Markley? I have a wedding photo of Robert Markley and his first wife Harriet Parrish around 1874.

Thanks for the inormation about Andrew and Barney tax records. I have a 3 oct 1850 census of Scott co in. that list Elizabeth born 1826 as daughter of Barney and Rebecca markley. In the 1860 census of scott co,Elizabeth is listed still as Elizabeth Markley and sibblings Mary Jane,Robert,Amos, and Margret L Markley living with her.She married mathias Berry 17 Feb, 1863.They are listed on the 22 june 1870 census of Scott co with Mary jane Markley, Robert markley, Amos markley, and Margret L Markley.I don't think Elizabeth was Andrew's wife as she was 24 in the 1850 census and he was 46.Two of the children of Andrew and Rebecca were twins. Joseph and Mary Jane.William was 8 months old. I know this can happen as my first and second child are just 10 months apart, so if I would have had twins first(parrish the thought) then had my second pregnacy that would have been 3 children in 1 year. Also in the 1870 census where matthias Berry and Elizabeth, the children are clearly marked as Markley children.I don't know if they ever had any children of their own. Have to wonder though what happened to Mary jane's twin brother Joseph?. I have a family sheet on Andrew and Rebecca markley that lists 15 children altogether. The last one being born in 1857, Margret L.I wonder why Rebecca markley gave her children to her daughter Elizabeth anyway as Rebecca didn't die until 14 Dec 1876?I wonder where she was living at? Hmmm

In the Jennings Twp, Scott Co.,IN tax record books - for the year 1856 - #377 in the list is Andrew Markley, who is not marked for poll and owns no land, only personal property. The next in the list - #378 is Barney Markley who does have Poll marked for 1, but has no land only personal property. I did not write down the amount of tax in my notes. In 1857 there is NO tax assessed to Andrew Markley, but his delinquent tax for 1856 and earlier was paid by Bernard Markley. I have a question though, do you have any family records that actually indicate that Elizabeth Markley is Barney Markley's sister? I always thought that Mary Jane (b. 1849) was Elizabeth's daughter along with some of the younger children. It seemed a stretch to think that Rebecca Markley could have had 3 children under the age of 1 in the year 1850 when she was 46 yr. old. In fact I wondered if Elizabeth could have been Barney/Benjamin's wife or somehow married into the family. One thing to remember is that none of this family was marked in the census as being able to read or write. I have a document I will scan to send you where Barny Markley signed with an X indicating he could not even sign his name. Karen

I did some research in the Scott County, IN genealogy research center. They have all the old property tax books. Andrew Markley didn't pay his annual tax for many years, and then Barney/Benj. shows up in one tax book and all the back tax is paid off. I need to go back and look for my notes on this. I have never found a death record or tombstone for Andrew, but Rebecca is buried with one of her daughter's in a nearby county. Send me your email and I'll check my file for more information.
Karen Carter
karens.carter@verizon.net

Hi Karen, Thanks for answering my posting. I have thought Barnett markley's parents were Andrew and Rebecca markley, but I couldn't prove it for sure. I only have a 1860 census of scott co ,Indiana. There is no Barnett Markley on it , but there is a Benjamin M Markley.I have always thought this was my Great-Great grandpa Barnett, but wasn't for sure. Where did you find the information about Barnett paying his father's back taxes?

His parents are Andrew and Rebecca Markley of Scott County Indiana. I have seen his name spelled Barney, Barny, Barnet, and so on. He was back in Scott County, IN apparently to settle his father' back tax debts after his father's death.

I am descended from Abraham & Phoebe Ferrell Markley. Their daughter Marie Markley Johnson was my 3rd great grandmother. I am looking for any information you have on them. I have Phoebe's obituary from the Beloit Daily News and a photo of Abraham's headstone in Oakwood Cemetery in Beloit, Wisconsin. I have obituaries for some of their children like Marie, John Wesley, Dolph, George Washington & Benjamin Franklin.

Do you have a date of Frances? If I am not mistaken Joseph Markley had daughter Frances that died in 1849 Fulton Co., Illinois in 1849. It appears that Joesph Markley Jr. also had a daughter Frances. At least that is what I am understanding from Joesph Jr.'s will.

Simon MARKLEY- WHITT, connection??

My great, great grandfather Marcus Aurelius Patrick WHITT, b. 1809, Tazewell, Co. VA, named his first born son Simon MARKLEY WHITT. I've been trying to trace Marcus' ancestry and thought the MARKLEY name might be a clue. The name does not seem to connect to Marcus' wife (KENDRICK), nor to either of her parents, so I'm wondering if son Simon's middle name might be the maiden name of Marcus' mother or grandmother, maybe first name is a clue as well. Not much to go on, maybe this MARKLEY was from Virginia, or possibly even Maryland. Marcus was also supposed to have been very tall, and to have descended from someone who was once indentured. Does anyone have any MARKLEY ancestors that might be related??? Or does anyone know of a Simon MARKLEY probably born in the 1700's? Thanks for any and all help.
